Dr. Buckingham Co-Authors New Fat Grafting and Facelift Surgery Article

Edward D. Buckingham’s newly published article “Incorporating Fat Grafting with Facelift Surgery, When, How, and Where” recently appeared on Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America, a series based on medical, scientific, and technical research in regards to the latest techniques in surgical techniques. Dr. Buckingham is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch of Galveston. He is double board-certified by The American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Buckingham is the author of numerous articles published in medical journals and has delivered presentations on the subjects of otolaryngology and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. In his recent article, Dr. Buckingham discusses facial aging and the loss of volume in bone, skin, and soft tissue.

He writes that “Historically, aging of the face is simplistically thought to occur because of persistent gravitational effects on the face resulting in ptotic tissue, and therefore, rejuvenation of the face requires surgical lifting of those tissues. Although certainly there are a multitude of facial surgical procedures to accomplish these goals, the complete picture of facial aging is more complicated, and surgical lifting alone fails to address completely the goal of reversing facial aging.”

Age-related characteristics of facial aging that are easily recognizable as the decades pass include skin changes. Wrinkles, age spots, and spider veins, as well as subtle shadows, are early features of facial aging brought on by changes in volume that occur as a result of skeletal remodeling as well as in the soft tissues.

Dr. Buckingham states that one of the most common surface-shadowing locations is right below the eye. The shadowing is generally referred to as tear trough deformity or orbital groove. Some individuals also suffer from under eye fat deposits, causing the eyes to appear puffy.

Facial fat grafting is a procedure in which fat is removed from one part of the body and moved to the face. The result is a fresher and more youthful appearance. “Just as skincare and laser resurfacing can contribute to the overall improvement in facial aging, so does volume replacement assist in correcting the subtle shadows that contribute to the recognition and appearance of the face in later decades.” Replacing facial volume can play an important role in facial rejuvenation and can be successfully added to traditional procedures involving elevation of sagging or drooping features.

Buckingham Center is a medical center providing both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.
