WHAT
COVID-19 is healthcare’s ultimate challenge – testing the industry’s capacity like never before to maintain accurate records, effectively communicate with patients and provide quality care. The panelists will explore the operational and technological weaknesses exposed by the virus and potential solutions for building technological roadmaps for the coming 24 months.
Amid virus spread and industry consolidation, enterprise content management is front and center when it comes to the efficiency and performance of the U.S. healthcare system. The pressures on the industry emanate from a collision of three forces: growing demand for quality care both virtually and in-person; a surge in patient and care-provider data; and unprecedented need for effective data management at a time when no single information standard is in place (to support COVID-19 tracing, accurate diagnoses, and proper treatment regimens).
As a result, a problem that has vexed the healthcare industry for some 10 years – the need for new IT systems to support fully digital processes – is being exacerbated. A fragmented healthcare system is creating reams of unstructured data in the form of e-mails, phone calls, handwritten notes, audio recordings, Word documents, faxes, analog data, et al. The healthcare system’s inability to handle timely reporting of test results to support virus tracing is a microcosm of the broader issue facing the industry: fragmented data in non-conforming formats that, in turn, create information bottlenecks and force costly workarounds.
Though unstructured data complies with health privacy standards, it doesn’t conform to digital data formats. It’s also more susceptible to error. Traditional software and data analytics programs have difficulty reading unstructured data and organizing in ways easily understood by hospitals and other care providers.
