Community Hero Action Group, a Montgomery County, Pennsylvania nonprofit organization that empowers and inspires African Americans through education and resources that decrease health and wealth disparities, is the recipient of a $450,000 federal grant. Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (PA-04) led efforts to secure the vote that resulted in the United States House of Representatives Appropriations Committee’s passage of a funding package beneficial to Community Hero Action Group’s mission. The organization is one of 15 community organizations in Berks and Montgomery Counties that are funding recipients. President Biden approved and signed the funding package on December 20, 2022.
Says Congresswoman Dean: “Community Hero Action Group is an important resource that addresses the needs of African American communities in our region, and I was delighted to secure funding to expand their health services — including mental health, trauma-informed care, telehealth, and community health worker initiatives.” She continues: “Their Pennsylvania Urban Health Project will help provide equitable care, reduce financial barriers for minority medical professionals, and bring awareness to health issues that disproportionately impact African Americans. I look forward to working with them to grow their resources, education, and advocacy so that more people get the care they need.”
The organization’s founding executive director, Nicole Keels-McGruder, adds: “African Americans are marred by trauma and violence more often than the broader community. These funds will significantly transform our programming and increase the scope and depth of the culturally competent mental health services we can provide to the community.” For further information, contact Nicole at nicole@communityheropa.org, or visit the website at https://communityheropa.org.
