ChenMed, a leading provider of primary care focused on Medicare-eligible seniors, holds its second annual Serving and Giving Week, giving its 3,000 team members four hours of paid time off to volunteer in their communities. Between 1 and 5 p.m. one day this week, ChenMed team members will donate 12,000 paid volunteer hours valued at more than half a million dollars to collect food, help residents with laundry, make care packages and spruce up communities, among other activities.
“As a privately-held company that’s led by physicians, we care deeply about the communities where we are helping seniors thrive,” said Christopher Chen, M.D., CEO of ChenMed. “For this initiative, every one of our team members is focused on building relationships and giving back. We look forward to making a difference by doing valuable volunteer work for some outstanding community service organizations.”
For example, ChenMed senior medical centers are partnering with the “Lighter Loads” initiative in conjunction with LaundryCares Foundation to offer free laundry services to residents in underserved communities using nearby laundromats. ChenMed volunteers will be assisting with guests’ laundry needs. Some centers are setting up book donation areas where team members can bring books that will go to families in the communities they serve, promoting childhood literacy. In order to maintain a safe environment during Covid-19, families will be able to read the books to their children in their cars while they wait for their laundry to be done.
The LighterLoads events are taking place in Cleveland, Miami, New Orleans, Orlando, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, Richmond and Tidewater, Va. Nov. 11 between 1 and 5 p.m., weather permitting.
“We’re excited to offer free laundry services to help others fulfill the basic need of having clean clothes,” said Dan Naumann, executive vice president, LaundryCares Foundation. “It’s an honor to partner with ChenMed to further this initiative while also bringing childhood literacy resources to families in underserved communities.”
In Miami, a partnership with Feeding South Florida will host a drive-by collection of non-perishable items at ChenMed company headquarters in Miami Gardens, Fla. The donations will help create 60,000 healthy meals for families in need.
“We are grateful for ChenMed’s support during this time of increased need. This holiday season will be particularly hard for families. Donations help put food on the table for over 1 million people struggling to make ends meet,” says Feeding South Florida’s Executive Vice President, Sari Vatske.
Additional Serving and Giving Week volunteer activities are taking place in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Columbus, Jacksonville, Louisville, Memphis and St. Louis. Last year ChenMed team members volunteered with more than 40 community partners, including Habitat for Humanity, YMCA, Feeding South Florida, 4Kids, Miami Rescue Mission and Hope South Florida, amongst others. ChenMed doctors and care teams do community service work year-round.
During the coronavirus pandemic, through a series of 130 telephone town hall events sponsored as a community service, more than 100 Chen, Dedicated and JenCare Senior Medical Center doctors have educated more than 500,000 at-risk seniors about coronavirus risks; and proven ways to prevent infections and hospitalizations. These hour-long educational forums started in April, and in October started spotlighting a peer-reviewed journal paper showing how 400 seniors benefitting from high-touch primary care focused on prevention had 40% lower mortality from coronavirus.
