Day for Tomorrow, a parallel to Earth Day or “People Day” will launch September 22 with events at the Mall in Washington, DC around the country and the world. People with disabilities, the elderly, and on the frontline are disproportionately impacted during disasters and are ignored with respect to climate change. Day for Tomorrow focuses on climate justice and taking action now in community. People are encouraged to join the gathering in DC or meet their neighbors on this day in order to know those next door who have disabilities or are elderly so they can assist them in a disaster. Individuals are encouraged to learn about the climate emergency and take action by not driving, eating vegetarian or turning off the lights for some or all of the day. Communities can hold educational events or other activities in order to promote climate justice.

Day for Tomorrow is necessary because people with disabilities are actively impacted now by climate change. Persons with spinal cord disorders cannot control their body temperature and are forced to stay indoors during extreme heat or cold. During disasters, persons with disabilities and the elderly are most vulnerable, being unable to go to shelters with wheelchairs or personal care assistants. Inadequate accommodations are also available for persons with head injuries and autism who cannot tolerate large open areas with many people.

Marcalee and Craig Alexander left their jobs as a rehabilitation physician and psychologist to launch Day for Tomorrow. Thus far, since June, they have walked from Canada to Atlantic city, evaluating roads for sidewalks, searching for persons with visible disabilities and visiting cities to have some parts underwater by 2060. “We have only seen 11 people in wheelchairs on the road. Sidewalks are only there in towns and in front of commercial establishments. We need to change this as the US moves forward in to conquer the climate emergency. More walking will help American’s physical and mental health”.

The Alexander’s overall goal is to bring attention to the issues of persons with disabilities pertaining to climate change and extreme weather. They have spoken at medical schools and facilitated community events such as a climate justice walk in New York. Their next stops are Atlantic City, Brigantine, Ventor City, Margate City and Ocean City, all deemed to be partly underwater by 2060 by the Wall Street Journal. Next, they are walking to Philadelphia where there will be a walk/roll from Sidney Kimmel Medical College to Love Park on September 8th.

“The earth will always be here, albeit uninhabitable. During this sixth mass extinction, we need to be concerned about people, especially those with disabilities, the elderly and others on the front line. Every person needs to take action as individuals and in community to be prepared for disasters such as hurricanes or floods. The climate emergency is a human justice issue that we need to address now.”

“The face of the climate change in the US must change from Polar Bears and people from other countries to include people in our communities of all ages, colors and abilities. The climate crisis is here and your grandmothers and neighbors. If you do not have a disability now, you are likely to have one in 20-30 years when the impact of climate change is worse. Frank Boudreau’s latest work, Everyday Leader: Priceless Leadership Principles That Connect to Everyday Life for the Everyday Leader, shares different pieces of advice for leaders in all fields and levels of experience. From company managers and politicians to educators and parents, being a leader is an aspiration that comes with opportunities to learn and improve oneself alongside the people being led. The author tells us that being an effective leader requires the ability to properly connect with people, to have empathy towards others as everyone is different and has varying needs, the courage to take that first step, and the willingness to set an example for the followers.

“It takes effort, work, and sacrifice to grow as a leader. If you want maximum results from your leadership, you have to put forth maximum effort as a leader,” Frank Boudreau emphasizes that, like all endeavors, leading others is not something that comes easily or immediately. “That doesn’t mean you do all of your team’s work yourself, but it does mean that you will have to do all the things a great leader has to do. Ultimately you will get what you pay for. You will reap what you sow. If you want to be your best, you have to give your best.”

The author also advises that a way to improve one’s leadership skills is through learning how to serve others, particularly those a person leads. As followers, they will look up to their leader for guidance in different situations and value the leader’s opinion depending on how much they trust and respect their leader. If one commits to being a servant-leader, it will inspire their followers to serve others as well. When that happens, a leader and their team will be capable of even greater feats, and this will bring their group even closer together.

Leaders, no matter how experienced, also need a good counsel—someone who will bless them with words that they need to hear so they can make the right decision in a given situation. “I’ve heard some say, ‘I seek counsel in the Lord and that’s all the counsel I need,’ but I think it is important to know that the Lord often provides that counsel through people He places in our lives,” the author tells us that, although the Lord can guide us through miracles, He typically guides us through the people He brings into our lives. “Walking through this life alone with no counsel is a dangerous and lonely thing…. And if you are a believer in the Lord, ask Him to help you recognize the ones He has placed in your life for directing you where you need to go.”

Brian Grant Foundation Launches Team Grant Online Exercise Community for Parkinson’s


The Brian Grant Foundation (BGF) has launched Team Grant, an easy-to-use online tool that allows people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) to set fitness goals, track their exercise activities, earn badges for working out, and connect with others in the PD community.

At team-grant.briangrant.org, Team Grant members can create a profile where they can set fitness goals, track their exercise activity and monitor their progress. Each time a Team Grant member logs an activity on their profile, they are one step closer to earning a fun fitness badge. Users can also integrate their Team Grant fitness activity with a Fitbit wearable device.

Members of Team Grant will receive the latest information about managing Parkinson’s symptoms through diet and exercise, including fitness and nutrition tips, interviews with experts, profiles of people in the Parkinson’s community, and more. They’ll also get updates from BGF founder Brian Grant, a former National Basketball Association player who was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s in 2008.

Bloodstream infections (BSI) leading to sepsis are among the top 10 causes of mortality in the US. However, patients may not receive the most targeted therapy in time because traditional microbiological methods for pathogen detection require days to complete. Rapid molecular detection of these pathogens has shown improvement in patient outcomes, but not all molecular panels have a broad-based coverage of pathogens causing BSI.

Rapid molecular testing for positive blood cultures was introduced to better serve the patient population with potentially life-threatening BSI. The goal was to ensure that patients received the best care, as soon as possible. Delivering faster results can assist in antimicrobial stewardship utilization of the right drug, with the right dose, at the right time. Now that broader panels are available for use, implementation of a new set of rapid molecular panels for detection of more organisms causing BSI can further drive additional positive outcomes in this very important population of patients.

Universal Life Church Sues North Carolina Clerk to Protect Online Ordination

The suit alleges that this official has unconstitutionally utilized her position to block ordained ministers of ULCM from exercising their religious right to legally solemnize a wedding ceremony.

On August 26, 2019, the Universal Life Church Ministries (ULCM) filed a lawsuit against the Register of Deeds for Cleveland County, North Carolina. The suit alleges that this official has unconstitutionally utilized her position to block ordained ministers of ULCM from exercising their religious right to legally solemnize a wedding ceremony.

The Church claims to have ordained more than 20 million ministers, and wedding announcements across the country frequently indicate that the ceremony was performed by a minister of the ULCM. The Universal Life Church Ministries has long been a vocal advocate for marriage equality, and in many locations its ministers are the only option for those couples seeking a religious wedding ceremony in their area that comports with their values.

The Universal Life Church Ministries has thousands of active ministers and members across the State of North Carolina, and has vowed to work tirelessly to secure and restore the Constitutional and Spiritual rights of these individuals. This suit (Case No. 1:19-cv-00249), which is before the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina – Asheville Division, asks the Court for a judgment declaring that the refusal to recognize the validity of marriages performed by ULCM ministers is unconstitutional in addition to a permanent injunction preventing any actions that would deter or prevent any ULCM minister from officiating over a legal wedding ceremony.

At its founding, the ULCM committed itself to ensuring that all those who feel so-called could become ordained as ministers to marry, bury, and otherwise minister to any who may feel drawn to their personal message – often based on the faith traditions of yesteryear as society continues to integrate and evolve. As attendance in the pews at more traditional churches across the country continues to decline, ULCM has stated that its membership rolls continue to grow exponentially – even declaring themselves “the future of faith.”

The beliefs of the Universal Life Church Ministries derive from its overarching mantra: “We are all Children of the Same Universe.” ULCM states that its members and ministers abide only by two guiding tenets: 1. Do that which is right, and 2. All may freely practice their faith as they see fit, so long as in the course of doing so they don’t infringe on the freedom of any other to do the same.

The Church has previously pledged that it intends to vigorously defend the religious freedoms – guaranteed by the Constitution – of its ministers and members around the country in a national effort marshaled by the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine. The Universal Life Church Ministries continues to urge any ULCM members or ministers who have encountered a government official behaving in a manner that appears intolerant of their faith to contact the Church.

State of Florida invests in transformative technology toward improving childhood mental health

Let’s Talk Interactive, Inc., a leading provider of customizable telehealth solutions, alongside the Department of Children & Family Services (DCF) and the State of Florida’s First Lady Casey DeSantis’ Hope for Healing initiative, unveiled 63 Telehealth Kiosks and 63 Telehealth iPads Portals in six counties last week. Every public school in the Florida Panhandle will be equipped with a portal in time to start the 2019-2020 academic year. The customized Telehealth Kiosks and Telemedicine Software Portals will enable more than 35,000 school-aged children to access much-needed care for those affected by life stressors, primarily the trauma and devastation caused by Hurricane Michael in late 2018.

The Telehealth Portals will be available to students within Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Franklin, Jackson, and Liberty Counties via insurance, Medicaid and Medicare and grants available through Big Bend Community Based Care (BBCBC). Throughout the school year, providers in the hurricane-affected area will be able to offer counseling services through the Let’s Talk Interactive online platform. Students within these six Florida counties can now access psychiatric care through the Telehealth Portals during the school day. The parent or legal guardian can be part of the innovative video sessions through the HIPPA-compliant platform from work or home to maximize the time they are able to devote to their children’s wellness.

Hurricane Michael was the third most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in the contiguous United States and the first storm of its magnitude to do so in the Northeast Gulf Coast. After making landfall near Mexico Beach on the Florida Panhandle on October 10, 2018, the Category 4 storm caused massive destruction. The region is still devastated nearly one year later and those impacted are some of the youngest in the state.

“More than 15 million school-aged children suffer from psychiatric illness across the United States,” said Arthur Cooksey, Founder, Let’s Talk Interactive, Inc. “First Lady DeSantis and the State of Florida are spearheading a cutting edge initiative to tackle one of the nation’s leading crises – mental illness. Little Steps Sponsors 2019 OLPHun Run 5k Benefiting Families in Need

Giving back to the community is extremely important to the Little Steps team, and the profits from this event go toward a very worthy cause.

Little Steps Pediatric Therapy has announced it will sponsor the 2019 OLPHun Run 5k in Glenview, Illinois on Sunday, October 6. The annual walk/run through the Swainwood neighborhood raises money for Sister Paulanne’s Needy Family Fund, which is operated by the Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Parish and supports families in Glenview and the Chicagoland area.

The 5k will begin at 8 a.m. at Glenview’s Jackman Park. Runners will precede walkers, and those will strollers will start after the runners and walkers. Anyone arriving after 8:10 a.m. might be asked to move to the sidewalks when the roads are reopened to traffic. Runners will be electronically timed, while walkers will not.

Little Steps also sponsored the OLPHun Run 5k in 2017 and 2018. For the second year in a row, the pediatric therapy provider will also be the sole sponsor for kids’ t-shirts for the event.
