Mind-Eye Institute’s Z-Bell Test℠ Changes the Life of Boy with ADHD

Having a child’s eye-ear connection tested in an optometrist’s office? “Crazy,” thought Allison Suhowatsky, mother of Scott Harvey, a 10-year-old who had been diagnosed with ADHD. However, “crazy” proved to be “magical” for Scott.

Scott began sleeping through the night, something he had done only a handful of times before, when he started wearing a pair of filters prescribed by Deborah Zelinsky O.D., founder and research director of the Mind-Eye Institute, based in Northbrook, Ill, following that “crazy eye-ear test.”

“One expects to get eyeglasses for 20/20 eyesight, but these were magical,” said Allison. “Scott wore them for less than a minute twice a day, but now he was getting the all-night rest he needed to relax his body and help him better process his day.”

Added Dr. Zelinsky, “The filter Scott was prescribed blocks most frequencies of light and allows only one frequency to activate retinal pathways other than eyesight. The filters do not need to be worn for a long period of time to have a lingering effect.”

Just as importantly, Allison noted that Scott was beginning to overcome some of his learning and concentration struggles at school, and “his irritability decreased.” Allison first took Scott to the Mind-Eye Institute on the recommendation of her son’s physical therapist. During that initial appointment, Dr. Zelinsky had Scott “watching items on a screen to check his eye tracking, reading from a book and looking at various images. Then, she wanted to evaluate his visualization of auditory space.

Using her patented Z-Bell Test℠, Dr. Zelinsky asked Scott to close his eyes and then reach out and touch a small bell that she was ringing near him. He couldn’t. “Scott is flailing his arms trying to find the bell, and I am wondering, ‘What is going on here? What’s the problem?’” stated Allison.

“His eyes and ears are not connecting; let’s change that,” Allison recalls Dr. Zelinsky telling her. The appropriate eyeglass prescription for Scott was determined by putting different lenses, prisms and tints over his closed eyes until he could readily touch the bell. Since that first appointment, Scott has received updated eyeglasses with prisms, which he wears most of the day.

The prisms bend the light in ways that optimize the relationship between central and peripheral receptors in Scott’s retinas, while improving the connection with his eyes and ears. They act like training wheels on a bicycle — used for a short time until the patient can do the skill themselves without help.

The right mix of filters, lenses and/or prisms can read just a patient’s visual balance and eye-ear connection by altering the way light disperses across the retina, explains Dr. Zelinsky. “The retina is a piece of brain tissue. That’s why changes in lighting levels on the eye will affect how the brain interprets and reacts to information about the environment and can impact a person’s spatial awareness, movement and selective attention to sound.”

Unlike standard eyeglasses that mainly correct central eyesight, eyeglass prescriptions developed through the Z-Bell Test℠ are therapeutic, addressing peripheral eyesight and bringing patients like Scott relief for a range of symptoms caused by eye-ear imbalances, brain injuries and other neurological issues, including learning problems such as ADHD.

National Disaster Preparedness Month: Be Prepared

This Psychological Homework Could Change Your Life

Studies suggest that when therapists assign homework to their clients, outcomes improve an average of 30 percent. Dr. Shapiro explains, “Most therapists today use evidence-based therapies rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. These therapies focus on specific psychological skills that people can learn, like tolerating intrusive thoughts, developing a social support network, and controlling their impulses. It only makes sense that if a person is learning a new skill, he or she needs to practice this skill in real-life situations. That’s what our homework is designed to do. Each tool on our site can be downloaded and printed by a therapist and then given to a client to work on their problems between sessions.”

The company has also recently released new software that will allow therapists to “write” a book of techniques for a client in less than an hour, based on the problems that trouble clients most. The book acts a “blueprint” for therapy, as well as a permanent record of a client’s progress. Shapiro developed the Psychotherapy and Counseling Workbook Creator after researching the techniques and variables that are associated with successful therapy outcomes. We now believe that practicing specific psychological skills can help re-wire the brain, creating new neural pathways that can permanently change the behaviors and symptom patterns of clients.”

Step By Step Guide by TherapyAppointment to Help Mental Health Professionals Transition From HICN to MBI for Insurance Claim Filing


Healthcare organizations continue to ramp up efforts to enhance online security by reducing vulnerabilities associated with use of SSNs. In the spirit of strengthening security around patient data, CMS will be issue Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) on patient’s new Medicare cards. The shift to MBI is going to have tremendous impact on minimizing identity theft, that use of SSNs exposed beneficiaries to.

All healthcare providers, including physicians, therapists, counselors, and other mental health professionals who bill Medicare for insurance will be impacted by this. The transition period will end December 31, 2019 and MBIs must be used starting January 1, 2020. Until then, however, providers can continue to use their issued ID number or the MBI.

Prepare. Prepare. Prepare

Your systems and business processes should be ready to accept new MBI. All of the business transactions involving billing, claims and beneficiary eligibility statuses, or any other interactions with Medicare makes it mandatory to be able to accept MBIs by end of this year. Have your staff coordinate activities around this:

Step 1. Communicate with existing clients

a. For existing clients, it would be best to send out communication to update their MBIs in the system.

b. CMS has also launched a wide-scale communication to educate Medicare beneficiaries about this. Medicare and You Handbook has additional information on this.

c. Use the mailing schedule to anticipate when they will have a new card with the MBI to give you.

d. Beneficiaries can also log in to https://www.mymedicare.gov/ obtain information on their MBI

Step 2. During Client Intake:

a. Ask your client if they have been issued a new Medicare card yet?

b. Ask client for their new MBI on their new card

c. Help clients verify their address on file. If it does not match address on eligibility response, they won’t get a new card. In that case, they should contact Social Security Administration (SSA) to update their information.

Step 3. Update Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA):

a. Update Medicare beneficiary numbers in your systems, so you can receive the new MBIs automatically

b. MBI will also be returned on every ERA with claims submitted with a valid HCIN number

4. Final verdict on MBI : Will Your Claims be Rejected?

Per CMS’s MBI Information Bulletin dated July 23rd, 2019:

“Protect your patients’ identities by using the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) now. Starting January 1, 2020, you must use the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). We will reject claims you submit with the Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN), with a few exceptions, and reject all eligibility transactions”.

Transitioning to MBIs will change how business is done in many ways. Providers should prep in advance avoid any shortfalls during this process.

Throughout her career, she has managed large-scale technology implementations and projects with cross-functional teams, created and executed business, marketing and product strategies that drove double-digit top and bottom-line growth, and built values-oriented team cultures that fostered creativity and yielded high productivity. Henderson has a B.S. in computer science, and has received the SBA Emerging Leadership award, the Rising Star Award by The Executive Committee – Milwaukee and has been named a Woman of Influence by Milwaukee Business Journal.

Henderson is responsible for driving performance of Penta’s value delivery strategies and tactics, including software development, implementation, accounting and human resources.

WeInfuse and Precision Healthcare improving infusion care in Tennessee, Arkansas

WeInfuse has been tremendously helpful with providing solutions to several growth pain points for us.

WeInfuse, the leading end-to-end infusion center software provider, has teamed up with Precision Healthcare. Precision will use WeInfuse as its primary infusion center workflow and documentation platform to enable greater operational efficiency and financial accuracy in its existing and expanding footprint across Tennessee and Arkansas.

Currently, Precision provides over 2,000 infusion treatments per month to patients in their nine ambulatory infusion centers across two states. Through their new partnership with WeInfuse, Precision expects to see that number increase in the coming months.
