Northramp Announces the Launch of GovernSpot, its Online Platform for distributed and remote board, committee, and working group Management

GovernSpot Logo

With GovernSpot, we’re making it easier for our board members to engage with us and focus on what matters.”

Northramp announces the launch of its new SaaS platform, GovernSpot, focused on improving group governance activities and administration. GovernSpot enables organizations to manage groups and associated members, meetings, group topics, voting, announcements, and more.

Organizations with multiple distributed, remote, or teleworking board, committee, or working group members often use a variety of inefficient mechanisms for coordination, ranging from email and spreadsheets to simple SharePoint® sites. This approach is traditionally administratively burdensome, inhibits group participation, and often lacks any real tools beyond file management and comment threads.

With GovernSpot, all group information is centralized in a single place, enabling group members to more easily engage at any time, not just during meetings. Each group member also possesses a customized dashboard that aggregates all upcoming meetings, actions items, and activities across all groups they’re part of. With remote and telework activities accelerating, GovernSpot supports implementing group member engagement as an ongoing process, not an event.

Additionally, with group administration streamlined, organizations are free to leverage more and different groups to address narrower issues and opportunities with little to no extra effort. As Chris Knox, Executive Director at the Childress Klein YMCA in Charlotte, NC stated, “with GovernSpot, we’re making it easier for our board members to engage with us and focus on what matters.”

“We really saw a big gap in the market,” states Patrick Chapman, Managing Director at Northramp, adding, “at the lower end a lot of products are focused on things like event calendars and taking money from members – at the higher end, per user pricing really makes wider use prohibitive for organizations.” To address this, GovernSpot uses a tiered pricing model starting with a forever free account for one group and 15 members. Each tier allows for more groups with a much larger member count than other platforms with similar features. “Other services can charge as much as $450 a month for what we provide on our free tier.”

GovernSpot is now available at https://www.governspot.com.

Home Instead Predicts Strong Future for In-Home Care

Home Instead Senior Care, the leading global provider of in-home care for older adults, is witnessing an explosive demand for home care services as more and more baby boomers are looking to live at home as they age.

A study issued by the Home Care Association of America and the Global Coalition on Aging reports that nine out of 10 Americans ages 65 and older want to stay in their homes for as long as possible.

The fast-growing wave of older Americans is expected to outnumber children by 2034, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • In 2030, when all baby boomers will be at least 65, older Americans will make up 21% of the population, an increase from the 15% today.
  • By 2060, nearly one in four Americans will be 65 years or older, the number of seniors over 85 will triple, and the country will have a half-million centenarians.

In the face of this growing population of older adults, forecasts are that there will soon be fewer trained personnel available to care for this expanding senior population. Studies by Mercer, a global healthcare consulting firm, indicate that by 2025, U.S. healthcare providers will face a collective shortage of nearly 500,000 home health aides, 100,000 nursing assistants, and 30,000 nurse practitioners.

“As more and more people live into their 70s, 80s and 90s, we need to create care models that meet the needs of the growing senior population said Jeff Huber, CEO of Home Instead, Inc. “By helping older adults age safely at home, we can promote a more healthy, engaged and active lifestyle while also reducing the burden on health systems amid rising patient volume and smaller staff.”

As demand for in-home senior care continues to rise, Home Instead Senior Care is expanding its network to bring personalized support services closer to communities with growing senior populations. In fact, 15 new Home Instead franchises opened within the last 12 months, and there are currently franchise opportunities available across the U.S. and Canada, including markets such as Las Vegas, Nevada; Irvine, California; Houston, Texas; and the Greater Toronto Area.

“Through our 25 years of experience serving seniors around the world, we know they overwhelmingly want to remain independent in their own homes and appreciate the high-quality services Home Instead CAREGivers℠ provide to make that possible,” added Huber.

Founded in 1972, PAAR is one of the oldest rape crisis centers in the US and provides essential services to over 12,500 people per year.

PAAR provides a lifeline of hope for victims of sexual abuse and we are honored to provide a secure platform for the highly confidential information with which they’re entrusted.

Athena Software is honored to announce that Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) has selected Penelope as the cloud-based client management system it will now use to track the services provided to victims of sexual abuse and violence.

Founded in 1972, PAAR is one of the oldest rape crisis centers in the US and provides essential crisis services, therapy, prevention, and education to over 12,500 people per year.

“PAAR provides a lifeline of hope for victims of sexual abuse and we are honored to provide a secure platform for the highly confidential information with which they’re entrusted,” said Amanda McInnis, Athena Software’s Vice-President of Customer Experience.

“Penelope’s ability to improve the client experience and provide a clear picture of each person’s journey through care makes it an ideal solution for victim service agencies, and we look forward to helping PAAR free up time for their staff while improving their service and outcomes tracking.”

Penelope was selected by PAAR for its ease of use, as well as its ability to reduce duplicate data entry and track and report on services and client outcomes more efficiently.

The Penelope client management system provides a single source of truth about an organization’s clients by storing all services and documentation relevant to them in one case file. This eases data retrieval and reporting, while providing a full picture of the client’s service history for authorized staff members to view at any time. Penelope will enable PAAR to track its prevention programming and trainings in a centralized location.

Since implementing the system, PAAR staff have reported noticeable time savings when entering helpline calls using Penelope’s anonymous service feature. As well, staff have seen immediate benefits from using Penelope’s configurable smart documents and intuitive group programs tracking, and the system’s ability to easily track and report on outreach efforts.

Getting Home is the inspiring story of a defense lawyer and a schoolteacher who left their careers to rebuild homes for desperate survivors of Hurricane Katrina but wound up reconstructing the entire process for rebuilding after disasters. Authors Liz McCartney and Zack Rosenburg describe how SBP, the disaster relief nonprofit they founded, partnered with Toyota to apply the #lean principles of the Toyota Production System (TPS) to shrink the timeline for rebuilding homes following hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.

Rosenburg will share SBP’s true continuous improvement story – successes and challenges – in a keynote presentation at the 32nd annual Shingo Conference on Friday, April 17, 2020, in Orlando, according to the Boston-based nonprofit publisher Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI).

Rosenburg will reveal:

  • A proven new rebuilding model for making #disasterrecovery faster, more predictable, and with much less emotional and financial distress for victims;
  • A practical story of how citizens and governments can improve #disasterpreparedness;
  • The importance of understanding intolerable conditions, and how to address them through root-cause problem solving;
  • Why expertise is unnecessary if you have the right mindset;
  • The importance of culture and workplace identity;
  • Examples that inspire the use of TPS.

The annual conference is sponsored by the Shingo Institute, part of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. The institute is named for the late Shigeo Shingo, a key contributor to the development of lean management principles. For more information and to register, visit the conference web page.

The City of Durham Awards eMerging Entrepreneurs, Inc. with Participatory Budgeting Grant to Launch Youth STEM and Entrepreneurship Platform.

Our goal has been to not only make STEM learning environments more inclusive and diverse, but to integrate entrepreneurial education as a way of challenging our youth to become the next generation of tech-preneurs and job creators!

eMerging Entrepreneurs, Inc. is excited to announce that its youth STEM and entrepreneurship platform, known as the Urban Leadership Lab, was voted to receive a Participatory Budgeting grant to fund the launch of its technology and business education programs in Durham’s downtown district. A non-profit provider of startup, leadership, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, eMerging Entrepreneurs has made a commitment to enroll at least 500 teens within the project’s first year; providing local students with opportunities to develop the entrepreneurial and computational thinking skills to become leaders in today’s digital, technology-driven economy.

In March of 2019, eMerging Entrepreneurs proposed the creation of a city-wide educational initiative that would not only introduce young people to the excitement of STEM learning, but would equip them with the business skills to become future leaders and innovators in the science-based industries of tomorrow. The organization submitted its concept via the The City of Durham’s Participatory Budgeting (PB) community impact grant competition, a program in which the City Council allocated $2.4 million dollars to implement 40 of the nearly 500 project proposals submitted across the three city wards. The Participatory Budgeting process is designed to equip residents with the democratic power to choose how their local government’s resources are being used to impact their communities; from improving sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, to the development of technologies and systems to expand Wi-Fi access. eMerging Entrepreneurs is thrilled to announce that not only did the residents of Ward-1 vote for its youth program to be implemented in cycle-1 of city’s PB process, but the City Council voted unanimously in favor of awarding $99,121 to support the development of the educational platform, which will be launched in the summer of this year.

“We’re thankful for having been entrusted with this award and are committed to making access to these kinds of learning opportunities available to young people across downtown Durham, particularly those communities of students who are underrepresented in STEM education,” says T.J. Breeden, Founder and Executive Director of eMerging Entrepreneurs, Inc. “Our goal has been to not only make STEM learning environments more inclusive and diverse, but to integrate entrepreneurial education as a way of challenging our youth to become the next generation of tech-preneurs and job creators! This grant and the expansion of our programs across downtown Durham will allow us to do just that.”

About eMerging Entrepreneurs:

eMerging Entrepreneurs, Inc. is a North Carolina-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to advance the small business, educational, and economic welfare of communities whose interests are under-served; specifically, our nation’s military families, women, urban youth, and minority populations. To date, the organization has reached over 10,000 veterans, minorities, and youth, with its Founder having received a number national endorsements, ranging from former President Obama’s “Champions of Change” Award and being named the Small Business Administration’s “Veterans Entrepreneurship Advocate of the Year,” to receiving Radio One’s “Cathy Hughes Community Service” Award, and the “Dr. John Hope Franklin Humanitarian of the Year” Award. In 2015, eMerging Entrepreneurs launched its Urban Leadership Lab, a tech and startup incubator designed to provide K-12 youth with access to the kinds of resources that will help them unlock the full capacity of their social and intellectual potential. The following year, the organization was invited by the Obama Administration’s Office of Technology Policy to publish its 2016 educational commitment alongside over 200 other institutions as part of the White House’s “Computer Science for All” (CSforAll) initiative. The organization has continued its annual commitment to the (now privately led) CSforAll platform as an educational services provider, and to date, over 1,800 youth have engaged the Urban Leadership Lab via traditional and web-based learning environments.

STEM Meets Entrepreneurship:

“The Urban Leadership Lab introduces young people to not only robotics and drone-flight education, but provides them with the tools to explore who they can become,” says Tivon Madison, the organization’s STEM Coordinator. Mr. Madison; a Veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and an experienced Network Engineer; also serves as the NC Director of Infinite Scholars, a non-profit organization that connects high school students to tens of millions of dollars in scholarship opportunities each year. “It begins with access. Once kids have been introduced to these sorts of opportunities, it ignites something inside of them that could change the entire trajectory of their lives! That’s why the pairing of business and tech is so important because it helps them to see how what they’re learning in the classroom, can be applied outside of it.”

Taught in both traditional and web-based environments, the “Tech Lab” (the STEM division of the Urban Leadership Lab) introduces young people to a range of interactive learning opportunities in science and technology, from LEGO MINDSTORMS® robotics education to online coding. Conversely, the “Startup Lab” teaches students the core elements of creating, building, and operating a successful business, while also placing an emphasis on leadership and financial literacy. The entrepreneurship program is conducted via traditional classroom-style workshops and the organization’s e-Launch™ Academy, which is an online, asynchronous educational platform powered by EdX and Teachable.com. Each cohort aims to bridge the gap between traditional learning, entrepreneurship, and technology, by challenging students to create (and launch) innovative, solutions-oriented business concepts.

Achieving Diversity Through Collaboration:

The organization is actively exploring partnerships with youth centers, non-profits, public schools, and faith-based organizations to form a network of learning labs across downtown Durham. “Establishing labs in neighborhoods across Ward-1 will hopefully stretch our reach into communities that haven’t had access to these kinds of educational opportunities,” Mr. Breeden says. “Proximity is key! As a doctoral student whose current research is centered around diversity in STEM education, I find myself constantly examining the social disparities that disproportionately impact access and inclusion within certain segments of our education system; a condition I believe can be combatted through the proper alignment of public and private interests. Coming together with like-minded partners; each doing all they can to push this effort forward; I believe will not only advance equity but ultimately could help to make an emerging sector of our economy more socially and culturally diverse.”

The team at eMerging Entrepreneurs is eager to get started and are optimistic about the impact they can create! “Our program centers around a very simple belief: that access to technology education, coupled with entrepreneurial thinking, is the key to helping our youth explore the full range of career possibilities that lie ahead of them,” Mr. Breeden says. “If we can create the opportunities and serve as a viable point of access, then we can begin the hard work of preparing our young men and women to lead the next wave of tech, social, and business innovations!”

Scott Moeschberger Joins Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption Board of Trustees

News Image

Scott Moeschberger

“The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is doing absolutely critical work in finding safe, loving, adoptive homes for North America’s most vulnerable children,” said Moeschberger.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a national non-profit public charity, today welcomed Scott L. Moeschberger, Ph.D., as a member of its board of trustees. Scott is a professor of psychology at Taylor University and director of the school’s Initiatives for Vulnerable and Orphaned Children, a pioneering program designed to equip students with best practices and real-world exposure to issues affecting vulnerable children across the world. He will serve a three-year term.

“The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is doing absolutely critical work in finding safe, loving, adoptive homes for North America’s most vulnerable children,” said Moeschberger. “I’m honored to help in advancing the Foundation’s mission at a time of great need, as the number of children waiting to be adopted from foster care, unfortunately, continues to rise.”

Moeschberger is an accomplished author and speaker. His research has examined:

  • The experience of young adults adopted into transracial homes;
  • The relationship between violence and vulnerable children worldwide; and
  • Strategies for improving the effectiveness of the foster care system.

He recently completed a Visiting Research Fellowship at the Kroc Institute for Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

“Scott is a committed advocate for protecting and improving the lives of vulnerable children around the world,” said Mary Schell, Chief Public Affairs Officer for The Wendy’s Company and chair of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption’s board of trustees. “He will be an outstanding addition to the board.”

Through its signature program, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids®, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption provides funding to adoption agencies to hire recruiters who implement an evidence-based, child-focused recruitment model. A rigorous, five-year evaluation revealed that the model is up to three times more effective at serving children who have been in foster care the longest, including older youth, sibling groups and children with special needs.

To date, more than 475 Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters have found adoptive homes for more than 9,500 children in foster care across North America.

“Through his academic and professional efforts, Scott is advancing evidence and practice to better serve the globe’s most vulnerable children, while inspiring others to serve those who need our help the most,” said Rita Soronen, President & CEO of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. “I look forward to working alongside such a knowledgeable and dedicated champion for foster care adoption.”

Moeschberger earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Taylor University, a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Trinity Graduate School and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology from Ball State University.
