Florida Home Air Conditioning Donates Comfort to a Local Resident in Need

Gordon Scott, ARS Cares Recipient in Jacksonville

Florida Home Air Conditioning, part of the American Residential Services Network of Brands, surprises Jacksonville resident, Gordon Scott with a home services makeover on July 1. Scott was nominated to win a new HVAC system as part of ARS Cares program, which is a nationwide effort to recognize those in need.

Gordon has been battling cancer for a year and he recently lost his wife. He lives on a very limited income and currently only has a window AC unit in his home. This new HVAC system will provide Gordon with daily comfort from the smoldering Florida summer heat.

Safr Partners with Harbor House of Central Florida, Providing Safe Transportation For Domestic Violence Survivors

News Image

“Safr is proud to partner with Harbor House of Central Florida to provide free transportation to survivors of domestic violence,” said Syed Gilani, CEO of Safr.

Safr, a new ridesharing service dedicated to the safety and empowerment of women, announced it will be providing complimentary rides starting July 9, 2020 to clients of Harbor House of Central Florida, Orange County’s only state-certified domestic violence organization.

“Safr is proud to partner with Harbor House of Central Florida to provide free transportation to survivors of domestic violence,” said Syed Gilani, CEO of Safr. “Eighty-five percent of domestic violence victims today are women, and there are no words to adequately describe the difficulty of these situations. By providing free transportation to Harbor House’s emergency shelter, among its other valuable outreach services, Safr’s hope is that we can alleviate the burden of transportation for these individuals, and assist Harbor House in their mission to help participants. As we emerge from the global pandemic, Safr will soon be open in Central Florida for all to use and benefit. We look forward to bringing the Central Florida community the safest rideshare transportation with a focus on women’s safety and a meaningful global mission.”

Domestic violence survivors may be considered for free transportation via Safr’s fleet of rideshares across Central Florida, pending approval from Harbor House. Domestic violence is more likely to happen between the hours of 6pm and 6am; rideshare services mean safe, private transportation, particularly at night, without the burden of time-consuming public transportation.

“Harbor House’s mission is to empower survivors to take control of their lives,” stated Michelle Sperzel, CEO of Harbor House of Central Florida. “The women and survivors of domestic violence that we serve are rediscovering safety and understanding they deserve better. Many arrive to our emergency shelter with just the clothes on their back and the shoes on their feet. Oftentimes, we also have to arrange to pick them up in a safe, undisclosed location in the middle of the night. By donating rides to survivors, we are able to ensure those in imminent danger arrive to our emergency shelter and the other wrap-around services provided by Harbor House. It takes the burden of potentially getting transportation off of them.”

About Safr

Safr is a new ridesharing service focused on the safety and empowerment of women. Built with the needs of women in mind, Safr aims to improve the lives of women everywhere through safe transportation, job creation, and financial security. Safr’s drivers are personally vetted and undergo comprehensive background checks so that riders can have peace of mind knowing they meet Safr standards. Safr’s multiple in-ride app features aid in the protection of your safe arrival. When you choose to ride with Safr, you’re supporting a like-minded driver and elevating your community by helping to improve greater gender balance, choice, and participation in the ridesharing economy. Making the Most of Mealtime, From Grocery Shopping to Cooking at Home

Many health experts consider good nutrition the first line of defense for older adults who are striving to maintain their independence as they age, helping to protect them from illness and disease. But, a variety of obstacles, from medications and illnesses to memory and physical constraints, can make shopping, cooking and dining a challenge for seniors – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While many recognize the challenges seniors face at mealtime, social isolation and lack of companionship can often be overlooked as barriers to proper nutrition for older adults. And, the impact of senior loneliness is not to be understated. According to new data from Home Instead Senior Care, lonely U.S. seniors get 15% fewer servings of fruits and vegetables each year, when compared with seniors who don’t report feeling lonely.

“We are what we eat, and for seniors, a wholesome diet is absolutely critical to the aging process,” said Lakelyn Hogan, gerontologist and caregiver advocate at Home Instead Senior Care. “While poor diet can be detrimental to an individual’s health, COVID-19 has reminded us of something else we often taken for granted at mealtime – companionship. Whether it’s with a family member, friend or a professional caregiver, a shared meal can contribute to an older adult’s health and well-being in a big way.”

Whether you see suppertime as stressful or comforting, there are always opportunities to make it more enjoyable regardless of the challenges. Hogan recommends the following ideas to make breakfast, lunch and dinner a time you’ll look forward to.

  • Make mealtime an event. It’s natural to experience a loss of appetite as you age, especially when you’re taking certain medications or dealing with specific illnesses. To help spark your appetite, fill your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables, pull out an age-old recipe or decorate the table with real or artificial flowers. If you have trouble remembering to eat, consider establishing a regular mealtime routine that’s aligned with prescribed medication times.
  • Plan nutritious meals. Keep things simple and stock up on the staples. Oatmeal, eggs, blueberries and fish hold nutritional value and are extremely versatile. To combat “convenience eating,” keep quick snacks in your cabinet that are just as healthy as they are handy. Easy-to-eat items such as yogurt, fruit and nuts can also curb between-meal cravings.
  • Dine with friends. For most of us, eating isn’t just a matter of getting the food and nutrition we need – it is a social gathering we share with others. During a time when physically eating together may not be possible, consider other options, such as video chatting with a loved one while you are preparing or eating your food. Or, enjoy a socially distant meal with your neighbors while sitting in your backyard or driveway. Even an activity as simple as meal planning with a loved one can bring new meaning to your dining experience.
  • Keep experimenting! While nutritionists often focus on fresh ingredients, canned and frozen foods can be hearty options as well. If you’re unable to shop often, or fresh fruits and veggies aren’t readily accessible, consider stashing away non-perishable options such as canned tuna, pumpkin or pinto beans. Caught in a rut? Mix up your food choices by enhancing their flavor with herbs and spices.
  • Seek additional support. Difficulty when shopping or cooking can pose major challenges to eating healthy, especially for older adults who have recently been discharged from the hospital. Whether keeping a kitchen of tasty choices is a struggle or merely an inconvenience, home-delivered meals can make all the difference. Free apps such as InstaCart or Hello Fresh can deliver all the necessary ingredients to your doorstep. Or, if you’re still feeling stuck, consider enlisting professional in-home care services, such as Home Instead Senior Care for assistance with grocery shopping and meal preparation.

With the right resources and support, every senior can maintain a nutrient-rich diet that sustains a thriving lifestyle. Adjusting to new eating habits takes time and energy, so make sure to check-in with yourself on a frequent basis and focus on implementing one small change at a time. And, most importantly, don’t forget the ingredient no senior should ever live without – companionship.

Sarah Hagman-Lee is a registered nurse and single mother of two teenagers. Following the announcement of the ARS Cares Healthcare Heroes program on May 13, family, friends, and co-workers were invited to share stories of why a Charlotte frontline worker was deserving of home improvements that would deliver relief and relaxation. ARS received more than 400 nominations.

McCarthy Services, a local HVAC and plumbing services provider and part of the American Residential Services (ARS) Network of Brands, is providing a new water heater to Andrew Smith, a deserving ICU Nurse as part of the ARS Cares Healthcare Heroes program. “Northern Virginia healthcare workers have been working tirelessly to ensure our safety and recognizing their efforts by installing a new water heater was an easy way we could ensure they have a comfortable and safe environment to return home to,” said Manning Savage, Operational Manager of McCarthy Services. “We received many inspirational nominations from our community, and as giving back is a key pillar of our business, we are proud to help support them through the ARS Cares Healthcare Heroes program.”

As an ICU nurse at MedStar Washington Health in DC, Andrew Smith has been diligently working on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. In the middle of the crisis, he and his wife welcomed their first child into the world. After spending almost two months in NICU they were finally able to bring their baby home. In an effort to keep his new baby safe, Smith had been isolating from the family, staying at a hotel. When that was no longer financially possible he fixed up the family basement. A failing water heater only added more stress to the family. McCarthy Services is happy to provide much needed assistance to this local hero. The installation of Smith’s new water heater was completed on June 12.

As physically and mentally hard as it is especially during COVID-19, she says that working with her patients and her fellow nurses is the most rewarding part of her job. When Ann isn’t taking care of her patients, she travels bi-weekly to North Carolina to take her brother to his cancer treatments. The installation of Fraser’s new water heater was completed on June 11th.

Following the announcement of the ARS Cares Healthcare Heroes program on May 13, family, friends, and co-workers were invited to share stories of why a Atlanta frontline worker was deserving of home improvements that would deliver relief and relaxation. ARS received more than 400 nominations.

The ARS Cares initiative was launched in 2016 to cultivate positive relationships with communities where we live, work, and play. Since that time, more than 90 home services makeovers have been completed, donating more than $500,000 of HVAC systems and water heaters to deserving recipients.
