AONN+ Joins Cancer Care Community in Congratulating New FDA Commissioner

The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) joined other members of the Cancer Leadership Council in writing a letter of congratulations to Robert Califf on his confirmation as commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

AONN+ Program Director Sharon Gentry said Califf’s confirmation is “an acknowledgement of our work with other health professionals and agencies to establish and maintain a climate of mutual respect, dignity, diversity, ethical integrity, and trust.”

According to the letter prepared by the Cancer Leadership Council, the cancer care community has had a productive relationship with the FDA, including participation in drug development meetings, discussion of real-world evidence for use in FDA decisions, and collaboration on clinical trials issues.

AONN+ signed this letter based on the support and recommendation of its Policy & Advocacy Committee, whose mission is to utilize legislative, regulatory, and policy advocacy to protect and promote the practice of oncology patient navigation in order to best serve individuals and families impacted by cancer.

“For navigation professionals, the concepts of leadership and team building are inherent in the standards of care that are demonstrated daily,” said Sharon. “As a professional organization, AONN+ also demonstrates an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of healthcare.”

A tenured professor of cardiology at Duke University, Califf had served as FDA Commissioner between February 2016 and November 2017. President Biden renominated him to head the FDA on November 12, 2021.

With more than 30 member organizations, the Cancer Leadership Council is a forum for discussion and advocacy on issues related to cancer health policy and cancer patients’ access to quality care.

Dear Dr. Califf:

The undersigned organizations representing cancer patients, health care professionals, researchers, and caregivers are writing to offer our congratulations on your confirmation as Commissioner of Food and Drugs.

Your steady leadership is critical at this moment when the nation is still addressing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our health and welfare and as the other vital work of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must also be completed following the most rigorous regulatory standards.

Lloyd Jones Expands Senior Housing Footprint with Nebraska Acquisition

AVIVA Woodlands

“Our team is excited to show the community what AVIVA is all about—providing best-in-class service, care, and programming for our residents and their families, as we have been doing for decades.”

Real estate investment firm Lloyd Jones today has announced the acquisition of Woodlands at Hillcrest, an 89-unit, 10973-bed senior housing community in Lincoln, Nebraska. The assisted- living and memory-care community is the latest in Lloyd Jones’ growing portfolio of senior and multifamily assets; the firm expects to close on several additional senior-housing acquisitions within the next few weeks.

Built in 2018, the community is well-appointed with a café and bistro, fitness area, multiple activity rooms, and putting green, plus a separate wing for its memory care residents. It is located within ten miles of four hospitals, six shopping centers, two malls, and the Lincoln Airport.

Woodlands at Hillcrest will be operated by Lloyd Jones Senior Living, the firm’s senior housing management division, and rebranded as AVIVA Woodlands. AVIVA is Lloyd Jones’ collection of senior living assets consisting of new, ground-up developments and recently constructed communities. AVIVA offers residents a maintenance-free lifestyle, personalized services, curated activities, robust health and wellness programs, and state-of-the-art amenities.

While the Nebraska acquisition may represent a new geographical territory for Lloyd Jones, the firm is not new to senior housing; its founder and chairman, Chris Finlay, has been in the industry for more than 30 years.

“We’re proud to be bringing Lloyd Jones and the AVIVA brand to Lincoln,” said Finlay. “Our team is excited to show the community what AVIVA is all about—providing best-in-class service, care, and programming for our residents and their families, as we have been doing for decades.”

“Gas Lines” Generation Expects Inflation Above 4% in 2022, Survey Finds

News Image

The November 2021 SSRC Retirement Values Survey found that 58% of all Americans are more concerned about their retirement today compared to a year ago. Other key findings from the bi-monthly report included:

A new survey conducted by the Social Security Resource Center (SSRC) found that two-thirds of Americans aged 60 and above (63%) expected inflation to accelerate to 4% or higher over the next twelve months. Twenty-one percent (21%) of this cohort predicted inflation will run 8% or higher, well over today’s historically high level.

“Older Americans lived through the high-inflation 1970’s: spiraling price increases, long lines at the gas station, and sluggish economic growth. Our survey highlights the extent to which the Covid-19 pandemic has changed Americans’ retirement plans. Now more than ever it’s important knowing what you’re owed in earned, spousal, or survivor Social Security benefits,” said Leigh McKenzie, SSRC Managing Director.

Only 24% of Americans said the economy is good these days. Fifty-three percent (53%) said the economy was poor. Typical for contemporary surveys, there was a strong partisan tilt to these responses. Only 34% of Democrats said the economy is poor, compared to 68% of Republicans.

Among other key findings:

  • Fifty-nine percent (59%) of all adults expected inflation to accelerate from today’s historically elevated levels over the next 12 months. Twenty-three percent (23%) of all adults expected inflation to meet or exceed 8%.
  • A quarter (25%) of adults said they’re worse off financially today than they were 12 months ago, including 29% of older (age >60) adults.
  • Around 1 in 5 (19%) said they expect to be worse off financially in 12 twelve months than they are today, including 24% of retirement-age adults. Republicans were more likely to have negative expectations (30%) than Democrats (12%).
  • Twelve percent (12%) of adults said that the Covid-19 pandemic made them push back their retirement plans.
  • A similar percentage (12%) said they were thinking about delaying their Social Security retirement benefits.
  • A fifth (21%) of adults said they’ve saved zero dollars for retirement over the last 12 months. Another 12% reported saving less than $1,000.
  • Given the current economic climate, nearly half (47%) said they are thinking about decreasing non-essential spending and 35% were thinking about postponing large purchases.

About the SSRC Retirement Values Survey

The SSRC Retirement Values Survey tracks public opinion on issues important to Americans in or approaching retirement. This 4th Quarter survey was an online panel survey of 1,511 U.S. adults, conducted November 14-17, 2021. Responses were post-stratified and weighted by age cohort, gender, educational attainment, and geographical region. The margin of error for this survey was +/- 2.5% with a 95% confidence interval. It is part of SSRC’s ongoing efforts throughout the pandemic to help Americans maximize their savings and retirement benefits, particularly given the COVID-19 closures of Social Security offices.

Making the Season Bright for Family Caregivers

News Image

‘Tis the season for joy and celebration, particularly this year as many of us look to once again reunite with friends and family. The holidays are a time to express gratitude for those in our lives, and family caregivers are an important group to recognize and celebrate. These individuals give so much of themselves every day to ensure their loved ones are cared for and supported. And while they serve in a role that calls for putting the needs of others before their own, the holiday season offers an opportunity to let them know you are thinking of them and appreciate the remarkable work they do.

You likely know someone who serves in this important role, whether a family member, someone at work or in the community. In fact, according to AARP, an estimated 53 million Americans are providing unpaid care for relatives and friends – 61% of whom also juggle outside employment. Furthermore, family caregivers provide an average of 23.7 hours of care each week. This number goes up substantially for those whose care recipients live with them (37.4 hours per week), making caregiving the equivalent to a full-time job.

“Many caregivers find reward in helping their loved ones, doing so with compassion and joy. But caregiving is an extremely demanding role,” said Lakelyn Hogan, Ph.D., gerontologist and caregiver advocate at Home Instead. “While every day is an opportunity to celebrate them, the holidays are a great reminder to recognize their hard work by showing them support and appreciation in return.”

Many caregivers aren’t looking for big, expensive gifts. They are generous givers – of their time, energy and love – which is what makes their role all the more meaningful. A small gift or act of kindness can go a long way in making a caregiver feel appreciated.

To learn more about how we can give back to those who are constantly giving to others, Home Instead polled family caregivers on what they hoped to receive during the holidays this year; appreciation and time off topped the list for many. As you prepare for the holidays, consider some of the following gift ideas for the caregivers in your life:

  • Recognition. The pressures of caregiving can leave many feeling stressed out and underappreciated. Small gifts like handwritten cards from family members, friends or care recipients can go a long way in showing caregivers you are thankful for all that they do. Couple this with a fresh bouquet of flowers to truly brighten their day.
  • Your Time. Give the gift of time and support by offering to help with caregiving tasks, whether for an afternoon or a few days. This gives caregivers a moment to rest, recharge and focus on their own health – because when a caregiver’s needs are met, the care recipient will benefit as well. If you are unable to provide assistance, consider seeking out the temporary support of a professional caregiver. A more formal arrangement such as respite care can be a solution to helping caregivers get a much-needed break.
  • Gift cards and subscription services. Treat a caregiver to the things they enjoy with a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant, store, coffee shop or spa. Paying for meal delivery services or a streaming platform can also offer caregivers a chance to wind down and practice self-care.
  • Acts of service. Sometimes the act of lending a helping hand is the best gift. Whether it’s loading up the fridge with home-cooked meals or offering to clean up around the house or yard, small acts of service can be a huge help in making caregivers’ lives easier and manageable.

As you plan your holiday shopping this season, remember to include caregivers on your list. Celebrating family caregivers and offering support is something you can do now and year-round to make a meaningful impact. And don’t forget the seniors in your life – a thoughtful gift can make this holiday season even more special for our older loved ones. The events will take place at Sarasota Art Museum and Urbanite Theatre.

“At CAN we believe that collaboration and partnership are essential to community service. Having these two very different organizations – SAM and Urbanite Theatre – partner with us in support of World AIDS DAY and A Day With(out) Art will make a significant impact,” said Roger Capote, Sr. Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for CAN.

In partnership with Sarasota Art Museum, CAN Community Health will co-present a Day With(out) Art evening program. Quilts will be displayed within the Museum’s McGuire Hall.

Sarasota Art Museum Executive Director Virginia Shearer said, “Felix Gonzalez-Torres was a thoughtful artist whose work is very accessible to the public. Though his work is infused with fun and light-heartedness, he never lost site of its deeper meaning and his mission, which is to have the public engage with issues that mattered to him by participating with his art. The work ‘Untitled’ is from a series called ‘The Candy Spill,’ and is actually a metaphor for the deterioration of the body during illness.”

The evening’s program will also feature Guest Speaker Jon Arterton, an AIDS activist and person living with AIDS, a live performance by Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota, “Faces of HIV” panels & CAN Community Health timeline, and CAN Patient Video Tribute. Allegheny Health Network Urban Health & Street Medicine, City of Pittsburgh Office of Community Health & Safety Partner to Open Three Community Outreach Hubs

AHN Urban Health & Street Medicine team cuts ribbon to Community Outreach Hub in downtown Pittsburgh.

“Demonstrating the role that a health care system can play in community empowerment and linkage to care, the community outreach hubs will provide a dignified setting for engagement and continued supportive relationships between our teams and those with whom we work.”

Marking a significant next step in an ongoing partnership to provide more robust support services to individuals with unmet health and wellness needs in Pittsburgh communities, AHN’s Urban Health & Street Medicine program and the City of Pittsburgh’s Office of Community Health & Safety today announced plans to open three community outreach hubs across the City over the next several months. Officials cut the ribbon today to the first hub which is located in Downtown Pittsburgh at 538 Smithfield Street.

Since launching in the spring of 2021, the Urban Health & Street Medicine program’s three street outreach teams have worked with more than 1,000 unique individuals across Pittsburgh at the intersection of homelessness, substance use and untreated mental health issues. With the opening of these community outreach hubs, the AHN teams will have centralized spaces to follow up with and care for those individuals and others in the future.

“While working alongside community members who often face a range of barriers within the housing, health care and criminal legal systems, our teams have recognized the need for designated spaces – free of discrimination and stigma – in which individuals can receive care and assistance as they navigate these systems,” said Dan Palka, administrative director, Urban Health & Street Medicine at AHN’s Center for Inclusion Health. “Demonstrating the role that a health care system can play in community empowerment and linkage to care, the community outreach hubs will provide a dignified setting for engagement and continued supportive relationships between our teams and those with whom we work.”

AHN’s community outreach teams, which include trained professionals serving as homeless services team leads, outreach specialists and community health workers, will work at the hubs to connect individuals with social services and housing resources, and will assist them in accessing and navigating needed health care services. The hubs will not function as homeless shelters, soup kitchens or drop-in centers.

The community outreach teams receive clinical support from a variety of partners including Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), community behavioral health organizations, Allegheny County Health Department and the Center for Inclusion Health’s array of specialized health services. The hubs will provide a low-barrier engagement space for these partners’ vital services.

In addition to the location in Downtown Pittsburgh, which will operate on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., two other community outreach hubs will open in the North Side and in East Liberty in the coming weeks and months.

A novel component of the partnership between AHN and the City of Pittsburgh is a collaboration with first responders known as the co-responder model. Traditionally, public safety agencies respond to calls to address the needs of those experiencing homelessness, problematic substance use and/or unaddressed mental health issues. Now, AHN’s street outreach teams are available to co-respond to such calls when requested by police officers, effectively integrating real-time social services supports into the emergency response process. The AHN teams have responded to more than 500 calls from police for assistance to date.

The community outreach hubs will support the co-responder model by serving as a central station for individuals who might otherwise be charged for low-level offenses. In line with a concept known as ‘Law Enforcement-Assisted Diversion’ (LEAD), police officers may transport an individual to an outreach hub for case management and connection with upstream services, thereby preventing criminal legal involvement or incarceration.

The partnership between AHN and the City was initiated through ‘Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act’ funds that were awarded to AHN by the City. In June, Mayor William Peduto announced that the partnership would receive an additional $10 million in funding which will aid in the continued expansion of services to all six police zones across Pittsburgh.

“What Pittsburgh has done, through our partnership with Allegheny Health Network and creating the Office of Community Health and Safety, is design a unique model that addresses the needs of our communities and puts people first. We have plenty of incredible resources throughout our city, but this model addresses that we don’t have to wait for people to seek out resources, we can bring the resources they need to them. We are already providing co-responders with public safety personnel through the Urban Health and Street Medicine program, and these new community outreach hubs will be easily accessible and provide sustainable, individualized support and resources. I thank AHN and OCH&S for their leadership and commitment and we look forward to our continued partnership,” said Mayor William Peduto.

The AHN Urban Health & Street Medicine program is just the latest example of AHN’s and Highmark Health’s commitment to improving health equity in the greater western Pennsylvania region by addressing social determinants of health. Nearby the new AHN Community Outreach Hub is a 45,000-square-foot homeless shelter being constructed as a result of a partnership between Highmark Health, UPMC, PNC, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. The shelter is expected to open next year.

AHN’s Center for Inclusion Health, part of the AHN Medicine Institute, was formed in 2014 as one of the nation’s first comprehensive programs of its kind focused on meeting the health care needs of individuals in underserved or marginalized populations. Through a coordinated and compassionate care delivery model, and using evidence-based interventions, its programs address the obstacles that make it difficult for people to access care. This includes, but is not limited to, addiction, food insecurity, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, immigrant/refugee health and transgender health.

TruBlue Total House Care Franchise Announces Partnership With The Helper Bees

Sean Fitzgerald

TruBlue understands that the familiarity, security and warm memories of home are most often preferable to assisted-living facilities or nursing homes … we are dedicated to offering basic senior modifications and installations to help make aging at home more accommodating and safe. -Fitzgerald

TruBlue Total House Care, the 60-plus-unit home-services franchise that has carved out a lucrative niche as the only franchise brand focused on providing complete home maintenance services for seniors and busy families, is furthering its mission to help seniors across the country age safely in place with its anticipated partnership with The Helper Bees .

Through its acquisition of healthAlign earlier this year, The Helper Bees is convening thousands of credentialed providers – including in-home care, meals and nutritional support, home modification, pest control, and more – all onto a single platform. This platform enables plans to offer a broader range of aging-in-place services while also allowing the insured the ability to access a user-friendly “one-stop-shop” that supports their independence at home.

Together, TruBlue and The Helper Bees believe that life at home should be as comfortable and safe as possible for everyone, including seniors, and healthcare options should help to make that vision a reality. Sean Fitzgerald, president of TruBlue, expanded on this sentiment.

“TruBlue understands that the familiarity, security and warm memories of home are most often preferable to assisted-living facilities or nursing homes. As a brand we are dedicated to offering basic senior modifications and installations to help make aging at home more accommodating and safe for everyone.”

Beginning in early 2022, TruBlue services will be offered in market areas where The Helper Bees’ health plan partners and members are eligible, offering senior home modifications performed by a certified TruBlue franchise location. TruBlue professionals will add home safety measures including grab bars, handheld showerheads and slip-resistant floor mats to members’ homes, depending on their individual needs.

“Our partnership with The Helper Bees is a tremendous strategic alliance for TruBlue, given their and healthAlign’s size and recognition within the industry,” said Fitzgerald. “This partnership will only continue to help propel TruBlue even more, offering more senior modifications in new territories across the country, beyond what we have previously been able to achieve as a brand.”

“According to the National Institute on Aging, nearly six of every 10 falls occur in the home,” said Char Hu, CEO of The Helper Bees. “TruBlue’s focus on safety will guide the home modification needs of older adults who want to age in place. We welcome this partnership on behalf of our plan partners and policyholders.”
