American Forests Unveils Updates for Tree Equity Score Tool to Address Climate Justice


Newly expanded Tree Equity Score tool now provides tree canopy data for over 260 million people – 80% of the U.S. population

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — American Forests, the first national nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S., unveiled the next generation of its free Tree Equity Score tool, now covering over 200,000 neighborhoods and over 260 million people across every urban area in the U.S.

Tree Equity Score aims to help address a stark reality: that a map of tree cover in cities often mirrors a map of income and race. First launched by American Forests in 2021, the free, interactive tool is a breakthrough in democratized data, allowing communities to learn more about the inequitable distribution of tree cover in their neighborhoods that often leads to disadvantaged communities experiencing disproportionately negative health and economic impacts exacerbated by climate change.

Ziegler Prices $59,925,000 Financing For Ohio Living 2023

CHICAGO, Aug. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Ziegler, a specialty investment bank, is pleased to announce the successful pricing of Ohio Living’s Series 2023 Bonds.

Ohio Living is a not-for-profit senior living organization founded in 1922 that owns and operates 12 communities located throughout the state of Ohio. According to the 2022 LeadingAge Ziegler 200 publication, Ohio Living is the second largest nonprofit senior living provider in Ohio and the 22nd largest nonprofit senior living provider in the nation, based on the number of senior living units.

Proceeds of the Series 2023 Bonds will be used to refund existing bank debt, terminate an interest rate swap agreement, fund a debt service reserve fund equal to approximately one year of debt service, fund approximately $3 million of capital expenditures and pay certain costs of issuance associated with the financing. The Series 2023 Bonds consist of tax-exempt fixed interest rate serial and term bonds with an 18-year final maturity. The Series 2023 Bonds feature a 3-year interest only period with annual principal amortization starting in 2026. Ohio Living decided to utilize fixed interest rate bonds to refund a portion of its bank capital following the turbulence experienced in early 2023 in the bank credit markets.

As part of the bond marketing process, Ohio Living’s management team made an in-person presentation to an audience of potential institutional investors attending Ziegler’s annual senior living investor workshop. The marketing and negotiated sales process resulted in six institutions participating in the offering, two of which were new investors to Ohio Living. The overall resulting average yield on the Series 2023 Bonds was 5.24% and they are callable in 7 years at 103%, declining to par in 10 years. The Series Bonds have an investment-grade rating of “BBB-” from Fitch Ratings.

Ziegler has served Ohio Living many times as underwriter and placement agent over the past 30 years. Ziegler’s last work with Ohio Living was in 2022, serving as sole underwriter on the Series 2022 fixed rate bond issuance which was a 6-month forward-settle refinancing.

Harris Teeter and Titan Farms donate 37,800 pounds of fresh peaches to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina


This is the 10th year Harris Teeter and Titan Farms have partnered for the Peaches with a Purpose campaign

MATTHEWS, N.C., Aug. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Harris Teeter and Titan Farms donated 37,800 pounds of fresh peaches to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) through the companies’ Peaches with a Purpose campaign.

When shoppers bought a peach between July 26 and August 8 at a North Carolina Harris Teeter location, Titan Farms donated a percentage of that sale to SHFBM in the form of fresh peaches.

Titan Farms, the largest peach grower on the east coast, created Peaches with a Purpose to help feed the under-served while bringing attention to the problem of food-insecurity. Through the partnership between Titan Farms and Harris Teeter, the two companies donated more than 380,000 pounds of peaches over the last ten years.

“We want to thank Titan Farms for supporting local hunger relief efforts and for allowing us to consistently be a part of this program,” said Danna Robinson, director of corporate affairs for Harris Teeter. “Fresh produce is scarce in food banks across the country, and we are happy to be able to contribute nutritious items to those in need.”

The peach donation will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, which serves a total of 24 counties in North Carolina and South Carolina. In the SHFBM service area, more than 489,000 people live in poverty including 159,000 children and 52,000 seniors.

Coalition for Family Harmony Opens a Second Domestic Violence Shelter for Indigenous Survivors of Violence

Our indigenous communities suffer in silence, not knowing that there is help for them. We will work hard to break the barriers that make it difficult for them to leave abusive relationships.

Coalition for Family Harmony (Coalition) is proud to announce a second domestic violence shelter serving indigenous survivors of domestic violence that opened in February 2023. Coalition was awarded funding from Cal OES in a competitive application to provide emergency housing to a specialized population. Using a peer-based model of service, the new shelter is staffed with trilingual advocates of various languages to better serve survivors who hesitate to reach out because they are undocumented and have language barriers.

Coalition domestic violence counselors have long understood that when a survivor of domestic violence leaves their abusive partner, they are often forced to leave their home and their community to keep themselves and their children safe. These issues are compounded for victims of abuse from the indigenous community, as they find themselves in a country with few legal rights, a severe lack of language access, and a skyrocketing cost of living. Furthermore, indigenous survivors working in the agriculture sector or in factories oftentimes work at the same place of employment as their abuser and rely on shared friends and family to afford to live in Ventura County.

Severing ties with a community that provides spiritual healing and a sense of social connection can cause lasting mental and emotional harm for generations. Using a peer model, the goal of our new shelter is to create a safe space for our indigenous community members to have the time to heal, receive legal and therapeutic support, and help children with the impacts of domestic violence in their lives.

Through trilingual domestic violence support and advocacy, our new program emphasizes identifying avenues for income and housing to help the survivor maintain economic independence and build community with other survivors of domestic violence.

Since 1976, Coalition for Family Harmony has served survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Ventura County. The Coalition’s mission is to provide direct services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault; to educate the community regarding multiple forms of violence; and to prevent the cycle of violence. Since its inception, Coalition has helped save thousands of lives and stop the deadly cycle of violence in families.

Since then, the agency has transformed to address multiple factors in the cycle of violence including victims, perpetrators, children who have witnessed or experienced family violence, early prevention, and socioeconomic barriers victims may have prevented them from thriving. These barriers include safe and permanent housing, accessing mental health services, and legal counsel or representation in cases related to their victimization such as restraining orders, property disputes, child custody, divorce, and immigration. Last year, the Coalition served over 5,000 clients across all programming.

“Our indigenous communities suffer in silence, not knowing that there is help for them. We will work hard to break the barriers that make it difficult for them to leave abusive relationships. The shelter will be a haven where they can get all the help they need in a way that they understand and feel understood,” said Laura Morales, Housing Services Manager.

The new shelter is in addition to the portfolio of housing options available through the Coalition including emergency shelter and transitional housing.

ACLS Opens 2023 Leading Edge Fellowship Competition for Recent PhDs Committed to Social Justice

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) announces the fifth competition for Leading Edge Fellowships, made possible by the generous support of the Mellon Foundation. The program demonstrates the dynamic capacity of the humanities to advance justice and equity in society.

In 2023, the ACLS Leading Edge Fellowship Program will offer 22 two-year fellowships partnering recent humanities and interpretive social sciences PhDs with organizations advancing social justice and equity in communities across the United States. The fellowships are designed to draw on the humanistic skills, capacities, and frameworks developed in the course of earning the PhD and provide a range of networking and career-building opportunities.

This year, ACLS is partnering with 22 nonprofit organizations including the Campaign for Southern Equality (Asheville, NC), Gender Justice (Saint Paul, MN), and Strategic Action for a Just Economy (Los Angeles, CA).

ACLS is now accepting fellowship applications, with submissions due by 9:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Each Leading Edge Fellow will receive a $66,000 stipend in year one, and $70,000 in year two, as well as health insurance, professional development funding, and mentorship. Fellows will contribute to initiatives and projects advancing the rights of immigrant workers and students, promoting strategic social change through the arts, and advocating for reproductive justice in communities like Saint Paul, MN and Dallas, TX. The fellows also will participate in a variety of professional development and networking activities designed to help translate the experiences of their two-year placements into post-fellowship career opportunities.

The Leading Edge Fellowship program welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds including historically underrepresented groups such as Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian American and Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaskan Native scholars, first generation college students, scholars from low-income backgrounds, formerly incarcerated scholars, queer and trans scholars, and scholars with disabilities.

ReImagine Science wants to develop skills in strong scientific critique for these teen activists. Early career PhDs in the sciences can hone their skills in collaboration and communication as they support teen hub members who are working on issues that matter to them and their communities.

ReImagine Science is looking for early career scientists to be mentors to Global CoLab Network’s teen-led SDG Hubs – unique, weekly virtual meetings that support teens in collaborative initiatives to address today’s big challenges through projects collaboratively and in their own communities. These teens, aged 13 to 19 years old, are part of the growing movement to address the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs – through collective and local action.

Part of a long-term relationship between ReImagine Science and Global CoLab Network, this new initiative will provide opportunities for early career research scientists to become mentors, create opportunities to hone their communication skills, share knowledge gained through their own research and studies, and interact with dedicated activists who are developing their own skills as organizers.

“ReImagine Science sees a need for developing skills in strong scientific critique to support novel ideas and initiatives for positive impact. At the same time, early career PhDs in the sciences can hone their skills in collaboration and mentoring as they support teen hub members who are working on issues that matter to them and their communities,” says Kennan Salinero, Executive Director of ReImagine Science.

Current hubs are centered on challenges and opportunities in twelve areas: climate, plastic pollution, quality education, zero hunger, racial justice, wildlife conservation, mental health, arts for change, supporting Afghan young females, and Spanish and Turkish speaking Hubs. Teens globally 13 to 19 years old can apply to join an SDG hub here.

Applicants who are selected to be hub mentors will be provided training and support on how to mentor teens who are actively working to make a difference on UN sustainability goals, in this unique online environment.

A Safe Place Receives the SBB Research Group Foundation Grant


A Safe Place received a $5,000 grant from the SBB Research Group Foundation, which awards monthly grants to support impactful organizations.

Based in Lake County, Illinois, A Safe Place, a nonprofit organization, provides comprehensive services to survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. The organization offers a continuum of care that addresses all aspects of abuse, from identifying root causes to creating and maintaining a safe environment for its survivors.

Among its many program offerings, A Safe Place provides community education and prevention programs, emergency services, housing, therapy and counseling, intervention, and other essential services. The organization supports individuals across Lake County, Cook County, southern Wisconsin, and surrounding areas. Overall, A Safe Place serves over 24,000 individuals per year.

“It is time for all of us to get involved,” said Damaris Lorta, A Safe Place’s Chief Development Officer. “We need the entire community to stand up and support programs that fight domestic violence.” Funding from the SBB Research Group Foundation will help A Safe Place continue providing its services.

“A Safe Place provides essential support to vulnerable people in our community,” said Matt Aven, co-founder and board member of the SBB Research Group Foundation.
