Conference Attendees to Tour Homes Being Rebuilt in Boulder County Area Devastated by the Marshall Fire

Newly announced workshops and buildings tour will provide new opportunities for Passive House understanding during the Passive House Network Conference in Denver on October 2-6.

DENVER, Aug. 28, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Passive House Network announced a post-conference tour to visit six single-family Passive House homes in the process of being constructed as part of the 2023 Passive House Network Conference. Part of the Marshall Fire rebuilding efforts, each home is in a different phase of construction, utilizing diverse construction assembly methods to hit the benchmarks for Passive House performance. The tour also includes a stop at the Alpen window factory, where Passive House windows are manufactured.

The tour will provide a unique learning opportunity for builders, designers, and policymakers to see Passive House in action. “This is the first time, anywhere in the world, that we can see a direct result of a policy that incentivizes durable and healthy Passive House construction in a neighborhood of families that have been impacted by an extreme climate event,” said Mariana Pickering, co-founder and CEO of Emu Passive, who organized the tour. “Walking through these sites will help other construction professionals see how achievable Passive House really is, and how great the impact can be.”

In addition to the tour, the Passive House Network is featuring six pre-conference workshops that focus on special topics related to Passive House learning and implementation. These workshops will include presentations on government incentive programs, heat pumps, and multifamily building construction, providing attendees with additional time to ask questions, make connections, and broaden their Passive House network.

One such workshop addresses a closely related industry transformation underway; off-site workflow integration. “With the new code guidelines and current accessibility to advanced Building Information Modeling, prefabrication is more accessible to one-off and custom construction than ever before,” said Edie Dillman, CEO of B.Public Prefab, who is hosting a workshop. “Prefabrication is perhaps our single greatest tool in addressing the labor shortages and cost volatility that the residential building sector faces.”

The 2023 Passive House Conference will be held online on September 28 and online and in person in Denver on October 4-5.

Mark Frost Announces Candidacy for Mayor of Brookhaven Georgia

Conservative former automotive retail executive to challenge area’s largely liberal establishment the non-partisan contest.

BROOKHAVEN, Ga., Aug. 25, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — First-time candidate Mark Frost announced his candidacy for mayor today. He completed qualifying and will be on the ballot for the November 7, 2023 election.

Other declared candidates at this time are current Brookhaven District 2 City Council member John Park – a former college roommate of current Mayor John Ernst – and small business owner Lauren Kiefer.

Self-described as a ‘semi-retired consultant,’ Frost’s spent 30+ years in the automobile retail industry. Most notably, he worked for Jim Ellis Automotive Atlanta for 13 years. As Ellis’ VP of Operations – GM Brands, Frost engaged the company in many Brookhaven fundraising activities such as the Brookhaven Bolt, the Chili Cook Off, First Responders Appreciation, DeKalb Fire station events, and others.

Frost spent his youth in NH, graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a B.A, and moved to Georgia in 1987. He and his wife – empty nesters – reside in the Ashford Park area of Brookhaven.

Asked about his motivation for entering the race, Frost said “It is my desire to give a greater voice in government to the taxpayers of Brookhaven. The seemingly extravagant spending, including a massive $78 million being spent on a new city hall; the huge spike in personal and business property tax bills; and the volume of controversies – including the Toco Hills annexation affair – has left me and my supporters wondering if the current regime hasn’t completely lost touch with its constituency. Inflation has had a devastating effect on many Brookhaven families and the time to endeavor to provide some relief is now.”

GreenProtein AI Launches to Bring AI and Machine Learning to the Plant-Based Meat Industry

Food System Innovations has partnered with AI and machine learning expert Noa Weiss to launch GreenProtein AI, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing the alternative protein space by utilizing advanced AI technology to optimize the extrusion of plant-based meats.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 26, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Food System Innovations has partnered with AI and machine learning expert Noa Weiss to launch GreenProtein AI, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing the alternative protein space by utilizing advanced AI technology to optimize the extrusion of plant-based meats.

With the current market climate impacting startups across sectors, those in the plant-based meat space encounter unique obstacles concerning texture optimization. The path to mainstream adoption of plant-based meat has been challenged by texture issues, a problem that the industry often struggles to overcome due to high costs related to extrusion R&D. GreenProtein AI emerges as a pioneering initiative to address these challenges, potentially reigniting growth within the industry.

GreenProtein AI focuses on leveraging state-of-the-art AI and machine learning technologies to optimize the extrusion process, a vital aspect in creating the desired texture of plant-based meat. By modeling the extrusion process using advanced machine learning methods and a broad range of data, the initiative aims to break down the high-cost barriers that have long hindered innovation in texture development. Through collaboration with extrusion facilities and plant-based meat manufacturers, GreenProtein AI will provide targeted insights and solutions, allowing for a more predictable and efficient production process. This technological advancement not only enhances quality and sustainability but also brings plant-based meat one step closer to becoming a competitively-priced alternative in the market.

Noa Weiss, the project lead, emphasized the potential of the initiative: “GreenProtein AI demonstrates the incredible power of AI to address real-world industry challenges. We are putting technology to work to remove barriers, allowing the alternative protein industry to achieve its full potential.”

This project aligns closely with the mission of Food System Innovations, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a more sustainable, humane, and equitable global food system.

Max Elder, Managing Director at FSI, believes GreenProtein AI will help accelerate improvements in texture and therefore broader market adoption for plant-based meats. Max was the founder and CEO of Nowadays, a startup using extrusion to create plant-based chicken that ceased operations this summer. “Extrusion is one of the best protein texturizing technologies at scale today, yet extruders remain ‘black boxes’ with high cost barriers for innovative startups to drive meaningful R&D. Nowadays would have benefited greatly from the predictive models GreenProtein AI is building.”

David Meyer, CEO of Food System Innovations, also shared his enthusiasm for the project: “This initiative embodies what we at Food System Innovations strive for: creative solutions to real-world challenges. GreenProtein AI is poised to revolutionize the industry, and we’re proud to be part of this journey.”

GreenProtein AI seeks collaboration with extrusion facilities and labs, extruder manufacturers, and plant-based meat manufacturers. Collaborators stand to gain valuable insights into the extrusion process, allowing for superior plant-based meat production while supporting the broader goal of environmental sustainability.

GreenProtein AI embodies a hopeful vision for the future, where plant-based meat becomes a preferred choice for consumers. Through cutting-edge AI solutions, this project promotes the broader goal of reducing the environmental and ethical impact of food production while delivering delicious, nutritious, and planet-friendly alternatives.

Congressman David Kustoff Conducts Listening Tour, Makes Stops at FHU, Henderson

The hour-long discussion covered several topics including higher education, rural healthcare, national debt and the efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service. Kustoff serves on the Ways & Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over taxes, healthcare, trade and family support programs.

He also shared his commitment to reauthorizing the Farm Bill, a piece of legislation updated every five years that impacts methods of food growth, the types of food grown as well as access to healthy foods for families in need.

Five FHU students attended the meeting with Kustoff, each of them feeling personally invested in different topics discussed that day. One student, Ben Shelton, a junior sport administration major, was glad to hear Kustoff mention the farmers of the area. “I grew up in rural West Tennessee, and farmers are a big part of the economy,” he said. “It’s nice to know that he’s listening to them, and he’s trying to help.”

Kustoff invited the students and their friends to consider applying for a summer internship in his office. “It’s a great opportunity for sophomores and juniors to learn about Washington D.C. and the House of Representatives,” he said. The House of Representatives sessions will resume Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023.

National Dog Day Returns on Saturday, August 26th to Celebrate Our Canine Companions and Encourage Adoption.

Amidst the heartwarming stories and images, a multitude of dogs remain in search of a forever home. National Dog Day, through the power of social media, will prove instrumental in connecting these dogs with loving families. The sharing of photos, videos, heartwarming news features, and adoption events will create an avenue for potential pet parents to come forward. These events, often accompanied by fee reductions, will culminate in a day of celebration and a reduced number of dogs in need, as many fortunate canines embark on their journey to a brighter future.

National Dog Day’s longtime partner Autotrader is back, featuring its “Best Cars For Dog Lovers” list to assist consumers in making the best vehicle choice for themselves and their furry co-pilots”.

Mars Petcare and Hilton join forces to celebrate International Dog Day with complimentary CESAR® Canine Cuisine meals for dogs staying at participating U.S. and select Toronto area Pet-Friendly Hilton Hotels on August 26th. To learn more about how Mars Petcare and Hilton are setting a new standard in pet-friendly travel, visit www.BetterCitiesforPets.com or stories.hilton.com.

National Dog Day is proud to partner with Elanco Animal Health, one of the largest animal health companies globally, to raise awareness of its UK-based ACT Against Lungworm campaign. Lungworm is a potentially deadly yet preventable parasite that can infect dogs, but despite this, a national survey showed that only 21% of UK dog owners know that vet-prescribed preventative treatment should be given monthly.1

Uniting dog lovers across the UK, the campaign was created to raise awareness of lungworm to help ensure no dog dies from this preventable condition in the future. With an educational website sharing essential materials and offering the opportunity to pledge to ACT Against Lungworm, the campaign is encouraging people to demonstrate their support and take accountable community action. Visit www.lungworm.co.uk to find out more and make your own pledge to ACT Against Lungworm and help stop dogs dying from this preventable condition.

Pet Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige, founded National Dog Day in 2004, as a way to thank dogs for their unconditional love as well as their dedication to service that keeps our families, communities and cities safe. Originally launched and celebrated in the United States, National Dog Day is now celebrated worldwide. “It’s a day to give back to dogs for all they mean to us, the laughter they evoke, the loyal companionship they provide and equally, if not more importantly, a day to find as many homes for orphaned dogs as possible. I chose the date in honor of my first rescue dog when I was a child, Sheltie, who was adopted on August 26th, but it was my soul-dog, Sailor, that inspired me to create the day after I found her at the shelter on death row, just a bag of bones and covered in cigarette burns. This day is her legacy for the all the love she gave in return for rescuing her” said Paige. This year marks the 19th anniversary of National/International Dog Day and millions of dogs finding new homes.
