Parents Lack Basic Understanding About Circumcision Dangers; ‘Skin in the Game’ Campaign Launches to Raise Awareness About This Unnecessary Medical Practice

Using events, new books by experts in the field, photography, and narratives to put human faces on circumcision victims, the campaign brings to life personal stories. It includes people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.

“People from across the country have volunteered to be part of the Skin in the Game campaign and talk about how routine newborn circumcision has adversely affected their lives,” says Georganne Chapin, co-founder and executive director of Intact America. “Mothers talked about their sons’ circumcision complications, including bleeding, infection, and sometimes further surgical repair. Men explained that sex is painful because too much skin was permanently removed from their bodies at an age when children cannot consent.”

Survey Highlights

In September 2023, Intact America conducted a nationwide survey regarding male child genital cutting (aka circumcision). The results showed that people know surprisingly little about this surgery, which is performed on 1.4 million baby boys each year. Other findings include:

  • 39% of those surveyed said that they don’t know what happens during circumcision. 91% know only some of what happens during the procedure.
  • 46% said they were not aware that newborn circumcision can result in complications.
  • 31% of those surveyed said they would be open to reconsidering their decision to circumcise a future son.
  • Participants believed that one-third of all boys are being circumcised for religious reasons, when the actual rate of ritual circumcisions is less than one percent.
  • 55% of respondents said they did not research circumcision because they had already decided to circumcise their sons.

The Intact America survey was fielded by the Qualtrics Research Team using their panel. The survey controlled for sex, age, race, and level of education.

Two Memoirs About Circumcision Debut in February 2024

Chapin will reveal her own circumcision story, describing the dangers and myths of circumcision and the role that medical professionals play in pushing the surgery when her memoir, “This Penis Business,” is published in February 2024 by Lucid House Publishing. The book will be released together with “Please Don’t Cut the Baby!,” a memoir written by Marilyn Milos, RN, one of the country’s earliest intactivists (or anti-circumcision activists), and currently a member of Intact America’s board of directors.

“Intact America’s mission is to change the way America thinks about circumcision,” Chapin said. “Circumcision has been so prevalent in American culture that it cuts through all of us. In my experience, as people learn more about circumcision, the more likely they are to oppose it.”

About Intact America

Intact America is the largest national advocacy group working to end involuntary child genital cutting in America and to ensure healthy sexual futures for all people. It does this by challenging social and sexual norms and empowering supporters and volunteers through advocacy and education. PAHRC and NLIHC Release Report on Natural Hazards and Federally Assisted Housing

Report reveals the need to protect federally assisted housing against the growing threat of natural hazards through better planning and stronger investments in resilience

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation (PAHRC) and the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) released today a new report, Natural Hazards and Federally Assisted Housing. The report analyzes the risks posed by natural hazards to federally assisted housing and its residents using the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Risk Index (NRI). Among other findings, the report reveals that nearly a quarter of federally assisted homes are in census tracts with the greatest risk of negative impacts from natural hazards, and that heat waves are the most prevalent natural hazard threatening residents of federally assisted homes.

“The disproportionate exposure of federally assisted homes to heat risk raises important questions about both the siting and quality of these homes, as well as policies regarding utility allowances in federal housing programs,” said NLIHC President and CEO Diane Yentel. “Greater investments must be made to improve heat resilience in neighborhoods, such as by improving tree canopy coverage in communities where federally assisted homes already exist and siting new assisted housing in neighborhoods with less exposure to extreme heat. Congress must also pass the bipartisan Reforming Disaster Recovery Act, which includes key improvements to federal recovery policy that would benefit federally assisted homes.”

Accounting for approximately 10% of the nation’s rental housing, federally assisted housing is a limited but critical resource for the lowest-income renters, who disproportionately struggle with housing costs. Increasingly frequent and severe weather events pose a growing threat to federally assisted housing and its residents, who are often the least prepared to respond to and recover from disasters.

“Most federally assisted homes are in census tracts at high risk of losses for at least one of the 18 natural hazards we studied,” says PAHRC’s Manager of Research and Industry Intelligence Kelly McElwain. “Affordable housing organizations need resources to improve the resilience and energy efficiency of their properties as the threat of severe weather grows so that they can provide stability for families for generations to come.”

By analyzing natural hazard risks using FEMA’s NRI and data from the National Housing Preservation Database, the report finds that 24% of federally assisted homes are in census tracts with the greatest risk of negative impacts from natural hazards nationwide. In eight states, more than half of federally assisted homes are in census tracts with the greatest risk of negative impacts.

The report reveals important geographic differences in vulnerability. For example, federally assisted homes in rural areas are more vulnerable to the negative impacts of natural hazards than homes in urban areas: 30% of federally assisted rental homes in rural areas are in census tracts with the greatest risk for negative impacts, compared to 23% of federally assisted rental homes in urban areas.

Heat waves are the most prevalent hazard threatening residents of federally assisted homes, according to the report. Twenty-eight percent of federally assisted rental homes are in census tracts with the greatest risk of losses from extreme heat. Meanwhile, 25% of federally assisted rental homes are in census tracts with the greatest risk of losses from tornadoes, and 23% are in census tracts with the greatest risk of losses from riverine flooding.

The report makes several recommendations about how to better protect federally assisted housing from the impacts of natural hazards. In general, greater resources for mitigation and better recovery planning are needed at all levels of government. At the federal level, Congress should pass the bipartisan Reforming Disaster Recovery Act, which would permanently authorize the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program and thereby expedite the allocation of federal recovery funds while also prioritizing one-for-one repair or replacement of federally assisted housing impacted by disasters.

Given the risks posed by extreme heat, there is also a need to improve energy efficiency and air conditioning in older federally assisted homes, while expanding utility allowance policies in federal housing programs to cover air conditioning for all residents.

We look forward to working with them to develop even more innovative features that facilitate lively interaction between students and teachers.”

For Kiddom, the partnership with IM is mission-aligned. “A lack of access to high-quality curriculum significantly undermines student equity, increasing disparities in educational outcomes,” said Ahsan Rizvi, CEO at Kiddom. “We are proud to offer IM 360 on the powerful Kiddom platform to ensure these high-quality materials are fully accessible in classrooms across the entire country.”

Research Reveals Significant Gaps in First Responder Training and Well-Being

Report captures the views of over 600 first responders to provide a meaningful look at the state of preparedness, training, and well-being at public safety organizations around the country

TAMPA, Fla., Nov. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — New research from Vector Solutions, the leading provider of technology solutions to help train, prepare, and retain public safety professionals, reveals how prepared law enforcement officers and EMS, fire, and 911 ECC workers feel to tackle the unique situations they face every day. Vector Solutions’ Preparing Our First Responders report surveyed more than 600 full-time public safety professionals in a law enforcement, EMS, fire, or 911 ECC role in the United States with findings indicating there are significant gaps in first responder training and well-being resources.

Vector Solutions’ latest study shows that 95% of first responders feel they receive initial trainings that adequately prepare them for the real world. However, 78% of respondents felt compelled to revisit their training after encountering an incident. Additionally, the data also shows that these professionals have high mental health concerns that are not being sufficiently addressed.

“Proper training is critical at all times for first responders,” said Doug Kazensky, former police training sergeant, officer of 23+ years, and Solutions Engineer at Vector Solutions. “By equipping these professionals with the ongoing training they need throughout their careers, we can help ensure that they feel prepared for every situation they may encounter in the real world.”

While public safety professionals are receiving the on-the-job resources they require, there is a significant concern over the mental health resources provided. While 72% of respondents worry how their occupation affects their mental health, half of law enforcement professionals have even considered leaving their job due to the lack of well-being support.

“Everyday our first responders can face extreme challenges on the job,” said Robbi King, veteran firefighter and Solutions Engineer at Vector Solutions. “If they’re being asked to show up for their communities every day but they’re still not receiving the resources they need, everyone will feel the impact of it.”

Additional Vector Solutions findings on the state of preparedness, training, and well-being that public safety organizations are facing:

Desire for Comprehensive Training
When it comes to the format of trainings, a striking majority of respondents agree that hands-on training is preferred and nearly half of respondents favor scenario-based instruction. However, law enforcement officers who supplemented their initial training with online training were more likely to feel prepared following their trainings.

  • 82% of law enforcement officers said their training prepared them for the realities of the field, but those who leveraged online versions of part of their initial trainings are 12% more likely than average to say this
  • 71% of all first responders surveyed favor hands-on training while 45% of respondents prefer scenario-based training

Despite High Confidence Levels, Respondents Face Major Obstacles
Issues including staffing shortages, low morale, and equipment concerns are impacting a large number of first responders in their everyday roles.

  • 65% of first responders’ organizations are facing staffing shortages
  • 47% are battling low morale in their departments and respondents who work at ECCs were 52% more likely than average to face issues with morale

First Responders Are Worried for Their Well-Being
Mental and physical well-being are heightened concerns across the board for first responders but it’s clear that those who have access to mental health training are reaping the benefits of it.

  • 91% of respondents who have access to mental health training say it’s beneficial
  • 6 in 10 first responders have witnessed an incident in the past 12 months that impacted their mental health
  • 55% of EMS, fire, and 911 ECC workers and 82% of law enforcement officers worry about how their job impacts their physical health

-1-
Methodology
All findings are based on a survey of more than 600 full-time public safety professionals in a law enforcement, EMS, fire, or 911 ECC role, conducted from August – September, 2023. Survey conducted at 95% confidence, +/- 4% margin of error. Each respondent works full-time as a first responder, is 18+, and lives in the United States.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository Implements Cohesive StratusLIVE Technology Solution for its Transformation Towards a More Holistic View of Supporters

With separate CRM systems for fundraising, programs, policies, and partnerships, the Food Depository had siloed data. They desired a modern CRM platform that allowed for a 360-degree view of donors and constituents. Beyond replacing software, it was essential that the provider offer new technology in the Microsoft ecosystem. This technology needed to prioritize strategic relationship building and transformation toward industry best practices and allow a holistic approach for supporter engagement.

After a structured evaluation process, the Food Depository selected StratusLIVE. Andy Seikel, Head of Technology and Transformation at the Food Depository described the key factors that determined the decision, “As an organization that utilizes the Microsoft technology ecosystem, it was important that our new system not only integrate with Microsoft Teams and Outlook but also the proven capabilities of the Microsoft Dynamics 365 platform. This functionality is present within StratusLIVE 365 and enables our broader vision of a holistic and comprehensive view of our supporters and their history of support activities while we improve interoperability and transparency. In addition, we are experiencing efficient gift processing and strong data analysis using Power BI – both enabled by the StratusLIVE solution. We selected StratusLIVE due in part to their history of continuous innovation, including their recent developments integrating AI. “We’re honored to support the critical work of The Greater Chicago Food Depository with a comprehensive supporter management platform. Dream Foundation’s Dreams for Veterans Program Receives 2023 Fisher Service Award for Military Community Service

Dream Foundation’s CEO, Kisa Heyer, accepted the award at a ceremony hosted by Fisher House Foundation and Military Times Foundation in Washington D.C. Dream Foundation’s Board Chair, Mario Muredda, Dreams for Veterans Advsiory Council Members, U.S. Navy Veteran Rupa Dainer, MD, and U.S. Army Veteran Scott O’Neal (R), as well as Prince Taylor, Ed.D from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs were also in attendance.

“This is a great honor shared by everyone who makes this program possible, who believes, as we do, that making veterans’ final Dreams come true is a powerful way to thank them for their service,” says Heyer. “Without any state or federal funding generous grants like that bestowed upon us by Fisher House Foundation and the Military Times Foundation are vital to the continuation of our mission.”

Selected from over 460 veteran service organizations to win the award, Dreams for Veterans will use the funds to fulfill the final Dreams of terminally-ill veterans and service members. Dreams for Veterans is the only national program that fulfills this innovative approach to end-of-life care. Whether reuniting families torn apart by combat-induced PTSD or helping veterans visit military memorials and arranging pinning ceremonies with strategic partner, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Dreams enable those who have served to determine their end-of-life journey, providing joy, comfort and closure to veterans and their families when they most need it.

“We are incredibly thankful for the generosity of the Fisher House Foundation and the Military Times Foundation who share our commitment to honoring our veterans,” says Chris Freeman, Dream Foundation Board Member, Dreams for Veterans Advisory Council Chair, and U.S. Army Captain Veteran. “This support will allow Dreams for Veterans to continue our mission of serving those who have served at their greatest time of need.”
