Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar Announces 2nd Annual Fresh & Raw Tour Together with Truist in Support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The free live music tour will span 16 stops at 16 different Shuckin’ Shack locations and will include headlining performances from The Voice’s Barrett Barber and singer-songwriter Taylor Goyette.

WILMINGTON, N.C., Aug. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Hold onto your oyster shucker, seafood lovers! Shuckin’ Shack, everyone’s favorite seafood restaurant franchise, is back at it again, and this time they’re turning up the volume with the Fresh & Raw Tour 2023, a free concert series and charity event launched together with Truist in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Building on the success of last year’s event, which raised over $52,000, this year’s tour promises to be an unforgettable experience for fans and supporters alike.

“Our Fresh & Raw Tour isn’t just some generic concert series — it’s a giant community party with talented, successful musicians and a shared passion for shaking things up,” said Jonathan Weathington, CEO of Shuckin’ Shack. “At Shuckin’ Shack, we don’t just sling oysters — we serve up a vibe, and this Fresh & Raw Tour? It’s our declaration that while we know our seafood, we also know how to throw a great party while raising money for a good cause — it has become an event that people look forward to.”

So, who are the headliners rocking the Shack this year?

Barrett Baber: This country rockstar, who gained fame as a contestant on season 9 of NBC’s The Voice (where he received the coveted four chair turn), is ready to serenade you with his chart-toppers, including his Certified Platinum single “Nothin’ On You,” recorded by Cody Johnson.

Taylor Goyette: Up-and-coming and downright captivating, Taylor’s soulful melodies will make you dance, laugh and maybe even shed a tear (in a good way!). His new single, “Show Goes On,” is going viral with over 20 million views on social media.

Plus, there will be local artists opening at every stop! And guess what? You get to play judge and jury. Vote for your favorite opener, and they’ll win a trip to Nashville to be featured on-stage with Barrett Baber and Taylor Goyette during a show produced by Grindhouse Nashville.

“I’m extremely excited to be on the road with Shuckin’ Shack,” said Baber. “This kind of show in these types of venues give attendees the chance to connect with artists and songs on a level they don’t normally get to experience. I think folks will leave these performances feeling like they got a glimpse behind the curtain of what it’s like to chase the Nashville dream.”

In addition to the great musical lineup, there will also be featured contests and food & drink specials (exact pricing varies by location). Each location will also be giving away free Shuckin’ Shack for a Year to one lucky winner who participates via their local Shuckin’ Shack’s social media pages and attends the show.

Last year, the Fresh & Raw Tour raised $52,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a cause that holds special significance for the Shuckin’ Shack network as Co-Founder Matt Piccinin is a survivor of Leukemia.

“I’m a survivor because of the funds raised by LLS,” said Piccinin. “It gives me hope that the funds raised go to the research and treatments associated with Leukemia, it gives the survivors hope that they can be around their family for years to come.”

This year, the brand is aiming higher, louder and tastier. The tour also serves as an opportunity to introduce new customers to the brand and make a lasting impression.

New Institute Launches to Close Gap in Research and Scholarship Opportunities for Underrepresented College Students and Faculty

National University’s Cause Research Institute (CRI) will invest in social sector research and innovation; foster collaboration with mission-aligned institutions

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — National University (NU), a nonprofit serving more than 40,000 students and one of the largest private Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) in the United States, today announced the launch of the NU Cause Research Institute (CRI), a new applied Research & Development arm that will work to coordinate research, scholarship and other innovation efforts, with a special focus on social sector challenges, such as education, health, human services, criminal justice, technology and sustainability. To lead the new initiative, the university has named Dr. Thomas Stewart, a veteran higher education administrator and social scientist, as the inaugural executive director of CRI.

“Too often, academic and scientific discovery and the teaching mission can seem at odds with each other. However, the research enterprise can also be a powerful lever for promoting the academic success and career advancement of students as well as faculty,” said Dr. Stewart, executive director of the Cause Research Institute. “This is about harnessing the power of a fast-growing academic research enterprise and the diverse talents and interests of faculty and students to develop real-world solutions to societal challenges.”

A core component of the Cause Research Institute’s work will be to expand opportunities for applied undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral research for underrepresented students and institutions. According to data from the National Science Foundation, U.S. colleges and universities invested more than $89.9 billion in FY 2021, an increase of $3.4 billion from FY 2020. Nationally, 63% of federally funded research occurs at a small group of institutions representing roughly 2.8% of bachelor’s degree-granting colleges and universities.

To help close the gap, the CRI will serve as a hub that will work with broad-access universities, community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions and K-12 schools that can now engage members of NU’s community to support a wide variety of academic fields. In addition to coordinating research and development activities for current NU faculty and students, the CRI will offer research, evaluation, assessment and other professional services to peer institutions and third-party organizations.

Well-known for its distinctive focus on serving working adults, educators and Veterans, National University has steadily grown its research enterprise over the past decade with the addition of graduate, doctoral and research programs. Stewart takes the helm of the Cause Research Institute after five years of NU service, most recently as the vice chancellor for social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion at National University.

In this new role, he will lead a team of experts in R&D, assessment and evaluation that will be responsible for managing research and scholarship efforts, overseeing research administration and the university’s research & development function, and providing contract professional services.

“Our vision is to democratize opportunities for academic research and scholarship in ways that support upward mobility for students and faculty. It’s about putting world-class research within reach of institutions that share our access and success mission,” said Dr. Mark D. Milliron, president and CEO of National University. “This new venture will be a dynamic feature of NU that links students, faculty and programs to spark innovation, power R&D and contribute to social good—both within our own university community and in partnership with mission-aligned academic institutions across the country.”

As a Veteran-founded, Minority-Serving Institution, National University’s student population reflects the shifting—and highly diverse—demographics of higher education today. According to DIVERSE: Issues in Higher Education, the university provides more master’s degrees in education to minority students than any other college or university in California. NU also consistently ranks in the Top 10 nationally in conferring master’s degrees to women.

About National University: National University, a veteran-founded nonprofit, has been dedicated to meeting the needs of hard-working adults by providing accessible, affordable higher education opportunities since 1971. As one of the nation’s largest private nonprofit universities, NU offers over 190+ online and on-campus programs and flexible four-week and eight-week classes designed to help students reach their goals while balancing busy lives. Since its founding, the NU community has grown to 40,000 students and 220,000 alumni around the globe, many of whom serve in helping industries such as business, education, health care, cybersecurity, and law and criminal justice. OutstandingLife, the first non-profit Massachusetts LGBTQIA+ Virtual Senior Center, obtains funding from the Commonwealth

“When we invest in supports for our community, it is important to understand the unique challenges of those most marginalized. Too often, our aging population is overlooked and isolated from supports that already exist. OutstandingLife.org will bridge the gap between our aging LGBTQIA+ population and their community to provide a safe space to connect, socialize, learn, and grow. I look forward to seeing this program flourish.” said Senator Robyn Kennedy (D- First Worcester).

According to David Aronstein, OutstandingLife Chair “We are thrilled by and grateful for this historic funding. The legislature and the Governor agreed that addressing LGBTQ+ seniors’ need for connection, support, and growth is essential. Every town and city in the Commonwealth has a Council on Aging. But, because the LGBTQ+ population is dispersed throughout the Commonwealth, building a safe and welcoming community online makes perfect sense. We think that OutstandingLife is a great example of “Massachusetts For Us All!” .”

Elisabeth Connell, Executive Director of Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging added “MCOA is very excited to welcome OutstandingLife to the community of senior centers in Massachusetts! OutstandingLife will be creating and operating a Virtual Senior Center for LGBTQIA+ older adults. The creation of this intentional space for the LGBTQ+ older adult community to connect and thrive is inspiring, and MCOA looks forward to seeing the impact of this innovative virtual senior center on the LGBTQ+ older adults in our state!”

OutstandingLife’s Executive Director, David Conner added “We are grateful to Senator Robyn Kennedy and her incredible team for including the needs of Massachusetts LGBTQ+ older adults into legislation and helping foster connectedness amongst an often-excluded group of seniors. Through this statewide work, including a growing partnership with the Massachusetts Councils on Aging (MCOA), OutstandingLife can now expand our outreach work across the Commonwealth. We also realize the work ahead of us when it comes to digital equity, so with our friends at the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) and Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly (LBFE), we will continue to grow our senior technology training programs to help bridge the gap of today’s digital divide. We welcome all LGBTQ+ older adults to learn about the variety of free programs created by LGBTQ+ people, for LGBTQ+ older adults, in the OustandingLife community.”

About OutstandingLife.org

We provide a platform and a safe environment that fosters joy and independence. We are a diverse community committed to uplifting our members most impacted not only by homophobia and sexism but through systemic racism, transphobia, and income inequality. As life expectancy grows, we are living well into our 70s, 80s, and beyond. Longevity requires new ways of connecting and thinking about our wants and desires in what we need and want to do during our entire lives. We want to treat each person with dignity and respect and help people achieve their best life.

OutstandingLife is in process to be a formally approved IRS 501.c.3 not-for-profit organization. However, OutstandingLife has a partnership with the Multicultural AIDS Coalition (MAC), a registered not-for-profit corporation in Massachusetts who handles its fiscal matters in the interim.

Editors Pick! Slide into the Winter Season with a modern fable with a unique twist on old themes.

Younger readers will relish Amia’s imaginative talent, and Dee’s simple lesson of self-worth, paired with a reminder to be sensitive to others, lands well. Just as Amia learns to value her individuality, the townspeople must also learn to embrace the strengths of even their youngest residents. There’s no snow necessary to appreciate this heartfelt ode to self-acceptance.

Takeaway: A birthday wish gone wrong leads to a lesson on embracing personal strengths.

5 Star Review by Amy Louise Hill for Readers’ Favorite

The Snow Monster by Jodi Dee is a picture book for young children that tells an unusual story of a young girl named Amia who made a wish on her birthday. Amia loved snow and her wish was to be able to eat all the snow in the world. Amia couldn’t believe that her wish had been granted and headed outside to use her new superpower. But unfortunately for Amia, her neighbors reacted badly to her eating all the snow as there wasn’t any left for the other children to play in. Amia was banned from going outside in the winter and had to spend her birthdays indoors, watching the other children playing happily outdoors. One day, the town went into emergency mode, and Amia’s power was needed to save her neighbors. What do you think happened to the neighborhood? Find out in this charming book.

The Snow Monster by Jodi Dee was a pleasure to read. It is unlike any other story that I’ve encountered, and that’s what kept me interested. I was more intrigued with each page I read. I loved every word and I know children will too. The writing is simple yet descriptive, which allows you to easily imagine the scenes in your head. The illustrations by Chandrani Das are adorable and gave me a Christmassy feel. This book will make the perfect bedtime story or boredom breaker. Children are going to love it and I hope I get the chance to read more from this incredible author soon. Keep up the great work, Jodi, and stay creative.

Thought leaders from the education sector will gather at 1EdTech’s Europe Conference, September 14-15 at the University of Nottingham, where the European Commission’s Higher Education Interoperability workgroup will launch the initiative to an international audience from almost 20 different countries. The group will focus on the first phase of its plan: drafting architecture design for interoperable European Higher Education infrastructures.

“The final goal of this initiative is to create practical interoperability guidelines for implementation, maintenance, and governance,” explained Evelien Renders, international education advisor for SURF (the national research and education network for the Netherlands). “Our students are looking for more mobility.
