Film industry and government leaders join Oakwood Arts to discuss expanding Richmond region’s film industry

[ad_1]

Oakwood Arts, a nonprofit based in Richmond’s Church Hill, strives to create access for underrepresented and under-resourced communities to work in creative industries.

TV One President Michelle Rice said, “At TV One and CLEO TV, we create opportunities for new and currently underrepresented talent both in front of and behind the lens. We are building a pipeline for the new generation of creatives, which aligns with the work that Oakwood is doing in Richmond.”

TV One and CLEO TV networks are wholly owned by Urban One, the largest African American-owned media company in the United States, which operates 55 radio stations and is majority owner of the syndicator Reach Media as well as its digital arm, Interactive One.

Urban One is a partner in the proposed Richmond Grand Resort and Casino. If approved by voters this fall, the resort will include a state-of-the-art film and television production facility that will be the City of Richmond’s only soundstage.

The company has committed to bringing $50 million in film and TV production to Richmond in its first 10 years of operation. That investment would support approximately five made-for-TV movies annually in Richmond, creating more jobs and apprenticeships in the media production industry.

Over the past two years, Urban One has been a sponsor of Oakwood Arts’ Creative Workforce Innovation programs, supporting two OA JET film training projects as well as a spring break camp for teens focused on sound design. Oakwood Arts runs the OA JET program, which provides technical training and job placement for emerging creatives from diverse backgrounds who are currently underrepresented in the film & television industry.

In February 2023, Oakwood Arts developed the first Registered Apprenticeship program in Virginia, offering career pathways in the field of motion picture and video production with the Virginia Department of Labor.

“A purpose-built soundstage with a full slate of content scheduled to be ready to be produced there would be an ideal place for apprentices from our program to gain valuable paid on-the-job experience,” said Castleman.

Participating in the Sept. 27 discussion:

Alfred Liggins — Chief Executive Officer, Urban One

Michelle Rice — President, TV One and CLEO TV

Shannon Castleman — Executive Director, Oakwood Arts

Society of Women Engineers Earns $5 Million National Science Foundation Grant to Fund the Women of Color in Engineering Collaborative

[ad_1]

“This award is a testament to the amazing efforts of the Women of Color in Engineering Collaborative’s member organizations,” said Roberta Rincon, associate director of research at SWE and PI for the grant. “With the planning grant that NSF awarded us in 2020, we developed strong partnerships and a sound strategic plan to guide the WCEC’s work in the coming years. We are excited to begin implementing the strategies to address the unique challenges that women of color face in the engineering workforce.”

The grant is made possible through the NSF INCLUDES (Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) program. Aligning with the NSF INCLUDES program’s goal to advance equity and sustain systemic change to broaden participation in STEM, the WCEC aims to increase the diversity of the engineering workforce at the intersections of gender and race by improving the retention of women of color.

“Professional STEM societies, academic institutions, and employers have developed numerous programs and services for women engineers and engineers of color, but women of color engineers are often left underserved by these efforts,” Rincon said.

According to Rincon, women of color comprise less than 6% of engineering professionals. Research shows women leave the profession at higher rates than men, highlighting real-world experiences of bias and discrimination in hiring, promotion, and compensation decisions, which have particularly dire consequences for women of color.

“SWE has increased its focus on addressing the challenges that women engineers of color face,” said Karen Horting, SWE’s Executive Director and CEO. “We are excited to continue the work of the WCEC and grow a network of support to increase the retention and advancement of women engineers of color. Together, we will make real progress towards our DEIB goals.”

Seeking to increase the retention of women of color in the engineering profession, the WCEC will share case studies of promising practices with member organizations, support women of color in their pursuit of professional development opportunities and increase access and exposure of existing programs and services to women engineers of color and the organizations with which they engage.

The WCEC will expand from its current membership of 29 organizations to include more partners from industry, government, higher education, and professional STEM societies to create a support system that systematically impacts women’s transition from college to career to promotion through their networks in higher education and the public and private sectors.

About SWE
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950, is the world’s largest advocate and catalyst for change for women in engineering and technology. The not-for-profit educational and service organization is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. To ensure SWE members reach their full potential as engineers and leaders, the Society offers unique opportunities to network, provides professional development, shapes public policy and provides recognition for the life-changing contributions and achievements of women engineers. As a champion of diversity, SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in their personal and professional lives. St. Peter’s Catholic Church celebrates 200 years in Libertytown, MD

[ad_1]

Pastor Reverend Charles Wible shared “I can’t help but wonder if that handful of families who built the first church and began our parish community had any idea what the future would hold for St. Peter the Apostle Parish two hundred years later. I believe they would be pleased with the faithful, prayerful, and service-oriented community we have built.”

In his homily at the Mass, Archbishop Lori shared his pleasure in joining the congregation for its bicentennial. “What an opportunity to grow in our appreciation of the heritage of this parish! Even more wonderfully, this anniversary is graced opportunity to be renewed and deepened in the true missionary spirit that is already yours, the same missionary spirit that prompted our forebears in the faith to lay the groundwork for this parish so long ago.”

The Mass featured music composed by Fr. Wible as well as vocal and musical contributions by St. Peter’s Children’s, Adult, Handbell Choirs and its contemporary Praise and Worship Band. Immediately following the Mass, there was a reception at the parish’s Sullivan Hall.

To commemorate this bicentennial year, a series of articles was written and displays highlighting key moments in the church’s 200-year existence were placed in the Narthex of the church. A Bicentennial Bash, held on September 10th, provided an afternoon of fellowship with line dancing, pony rides, local ice cream, pulled pork and pit beef, in additional to the annual outdoor family activities and picnic fare. Winding down the celebration, a Bicentennial Ball will be held at Dutch’s Daughter on October 7, 2023.

The church recently installed a commemorative granite bench on the “Bicentennial Plaza” near Sappington Hall on the grounds. In the next few months, the parish plans to bury a time capsule at the plaza filled with various memorabilia from the church’s bicentennial.

As the end of the celebratory activities draw to a close, Fr. Wible shared that now is when the real work begins. “We owe it to those who come after us to be as faithful as those who came before us. Let us continue to be a prayerful people, committed to the Eucharist; a faithful people, growing in the knowledge and practice of our faith; a humble people, joyfully serving the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ.”

St. Peter’s Catholic Church is located at 9190 Church St. in Libertytown, one block from the intersection of MD Rt. 26 and MD Rt. 75.
