The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) recently wrapped up its National Women’s Business Conference, which culminates in an awards gala honoring exceptional women leaders. One of the top awards is the Susan Hager Legacy Award, named after NAWBO’s founding president, and this year it went to Ana Fernandez-Parmet of Parmetech, Inc. for her ongoing commitment to propelling NAWBO’s mission locally and nationally.

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 1, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) recently wrapped up its National Women’s Business Conference, which culminates in an awards gala honoring exceptional women leaders. One of the top awards is the Susan Hager Legacy Award, named after NAWBO’s founding president, and this year it went to Ana Fernandez-Parmet of Parmetech, Inc. for her ongoing commitment to propelling NAWBO’s mission locally and nationally.

Susan was a stalwart champion of women’s economic empowerment and built a legacy for others to follow. She famously said, “Get a seat at the table or build your own table, and make sure to include other women at that table.” The Susan Hager Legacy Award honors a person who by giving her time, talent and resources, has helped to further the legacy of women’s entrepreneurship now and for generations to come.

Ana, a first generation Cuban American, is president and CEO of the Pennsylvania-based Parmetech, Inc. She and her husband, Mike Parmet, co-founded the company in 1991, selling only remanufactured toner cartridges for laser printers and later expanding into break-fix service.

Today, Parmetech is a certified woman- and minority-owned enterprise that has successfully evolved into a full-service consulting firm and is a leading regional document management solutions provider. The firm has received top awards for customer service and sales from Xerox Corporation, including Top Reseller and Partner of the Year.

Ana joined NAWBO Philadelphia in 2000 and was active on the chapter’s Board for 17 consecutive years. She was Alliance chair and co-chair, served on the Executive Committee as secretary and vice president, and was president elect from 2016-2018, president from 2018-2020 and immediate past president from 2020-2022.

Today, Ana shares all this NAWBO leadership knowledge with other chapter leaders as part of the President Assembly Steering Committee. She is also part of the NAWBO Circle program, which gives her access to women like herself with $1 million+ companies who she could talk freely with and troubleshoot challenges.

Ana was incredibly surprised to be nominated for this honor. “I’ve won awards in the past, but I was reading the criteria for this award and just felt very honored and humbled. I have given this organization a lot of my years. When I was president, I felt like I had two full-time jobs trying to grow the chapter and my business, but I did it because I love NAWBO.”

Local Dental Office Steps Forward to Show its Support for our Veterans

[ad_1]

Written Informed Consent should improve their health outcomes and make it more likely for the veterans to be involved in their treatment plans. The conference then played a short clip of a NewsMax interview Mr. Spagnola had with John Bachman, which provided statistics and solutions to help these warriors.

It was shocking to Dr. Murphy that our veterans don’t typically have these opportunities to select their treatment modalities and increase their chances for improvement for a better life. This was also the consensus of his peers at the conferences. The need for Written Informed Consent was so obvious that they all stood shoulder-to-shoulder to ensure that this issue becomes a reality.

The support provided Mr. Spagnola assisted his work with veterans, including his work with the American Legion. One result was a resolution in support of Written Informed Consent being approved by the National Executive Committee of the American Legion, May 10-11, 2023, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Resolution No. 18: Written Informed Consent.

Updating the results of this event: Immediately after this resolution by the American Legion, many other likeminded organizations followed suit with support and/or resolutions, such as: The VFW [Veterans of Foreign Wars]; The Association of the U.S. Navy; Military-Veteran Advocacy; Airforce Sergeants Association; Vietnam Veterans of America; Special Forces Association of America; Jewish War Veterans; as well as Reserve Organization of America.

Dr. Murphy pointed out and reminded his colleagues that it is up to us as health care professionals to demonstrate the leadership needed to improve the health and welfare of our communities. These veterans are willing to give all for us—so we can at least show our support for programs and causes that assist better healthcare for them.

About the Doctor

Dr. Murphy graduated from SIU Dental School in Alton, IL in 2002. He did his undergraduate at Bradley University graduating in 1998.

His practice is located in Batavia, IL where he has been practicing since January of 2005. He resides in Batavia with his wife and three young girls. During dental school, Dr. Murphy went to Jamaica on a humanitarian trip where the team of doctors and students performed extractions, cleanings and basic restorative procedures. Furthermore, when he graduated from SUI Dental School, he received an award from The Academy of Operative Dentistry.

He is currently a member of American Dental Association, Illinois Dental Society (http://www.isds.org), Fox Valley Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He has received an award for Top Doc organization in 2011.

Dr. Murphy enjoys spending time within the community. He has been a member of Batavia Rotary since 2005 and severed as Secretary of the club for 2 years. Furthermore, he is member of Batavia Chamber of Commerce and served on Batavia Access Fireworks Committee.

Dr. Murphy likes to spend his free time traveling to warm places. Furthermore, he enjoys deep sea fishing. He is still looking for the blue marlin that got away from him on his honeymoon in 2002. He enjoys spending time with his family. The three girls keep him hopping.

To this day, he still gets tremendous satisfaction with every patient he is able to help. A smile brings happiness and he is proud to be a provider that can help spread health and happiness to the world.

Mother Goose Health Partnership with SohoMD Expands Maternity Care Platform, Adding Mental Health Services

[ad_1]

Mother Goose Health’s unification of the fragmented maternity care system proactively addresses disproportionate risk, care gaps and social determinants to help to improve health outcomes for mother and child, and reduce costs by closing the gaps between provider, patient, health plan and secondary providers.

“We are thrilled to partner with SohoMD to enable access to their unique mental health platform so that we might provide holistic maternity care to all,” said Kenneth Levey MD, MPH, chief executive officer, Mother Goose Health. “Poor perinatal mental health is a common pregnancy-related morbidity, particularly amongst underserved populations, and by completing the circle of mental healthcare from assessment to treatment within a completely connected health management system, we can help to improve outcomes for previously overlooked patient groups and reduce healthcare expenditure in those areas the burden is highest.”

“Even though mood and anxiety disorders are among the most common complications associated with pregnancy, including in the year following the birth, maternal mental health disorders are often underdiagnosed, under-treated, or go untreated completely,” said Dr. Jacques Jospitre, chief executive officer and co-founder of SohoMD. “This partnership with Mother Goose, whose services are laser-focused on the needs of new parents, will help us close this gap between care and need and serve as a model for integrating mental health into a maternity care ecosystem.”

Children’s Music Fund Launches National Initiative to Raise Awareness and Funds for Music Therapy

[ad_1]

Music Therapy is a well-established health profession, employing music within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. Administered by board-certified Music Therapists, the personalized treatment can include creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. CMF focuses on the well-being of the child through Music Therapy, helping them manage chronic and acute pain, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and terminal diseases, among various other conditions. The organization’s services extend to children facing autism, blood disorders, cancer, immune deficiencies, lung/heart/kidney diseases, rare diseases, and more.

“The benefits of Music Therapy can be profound – but, too often, the average person or even healthcare providers and insurance companies do not fully comprehend what it is,” states Tracey Burnett, Executive Director of Children’s Music Fund. “Music Therapy not only treats children at the time that they’re in need, but it also provides them the coping skills to be able to continue to deal with chronic illness or complex medical issues that they might be experiencing for the rest of their lives. It’s not just playing an instrument. It’s a collaborative, creative and therapeutic experience.”

Founder and President of Children’s Music Fund Dr. Raffi Tachdjian emphasizes that, “No child or young adult should suffer from the pain, fear and anxiety that comes from illness. As an immunologist with a pediatrics background, I believe in the power of Music Therapy and how it can restore the well-being of the recipients and empower them to do more, live better and reach for greater heights. Imagine a day without sound. Now, imagine hearing your preferred melodies and beats, expressing yourself through lyrics or musical imagery and healing through music. You’re no longer just living, you come alive!”

Michael Ruby, President and Chief Creative Office of Park & Battery adds, “Music has the power to makes us feel a wide range of emotions. It makes us feel joyful when we play our favorite song in the car. It makes us nostalgic when we hear a long-forgotten song from our childhood. Music also has the power to heal. Our campaign seeks to bring music’s unique power and universality to life, so that Children’s Music Fund can empower more Music Therapists and kids with the ability to thrive together. We’re so proud to donate our services to Children’s Music Fund and support this incredible cause.”

The “Music Makes Us Better” campaign includes a 10-minute documentary film on the power of Music Therapy, as well as patient and therapist profiles, all recorded live at the historic Village Studios in Los Angeles, where some of the world’s most famous songs and albums gave been created. The national multichannel effort includes broadcast, digital and social media.

“The ‘Music Makes Us Better’ campaign uses the universal language of music to connect us with a purpose – to make a difference in a life of a child,” says Ronda Grech, Board Chairperson of Children’s Music Fund. “Thanks to Park & Battery, we look to highlight the benefits of Music Therapy and the healing power it provides to the children and young adults with chronic conditions and life-altering illnesses. We are grateful for their support of Children’s Music Fund.”

Upgrade to Safety: Introducing Calypso™

[ad_1]

The stiffness of the structure led to situations where the load and positioning of each platform section could not be accurately monitored. Sacrificing the natural ductility and bending strength of the steel structure (by articulation), limited the system’s ability to distribute loads across different sections, making it vulnerable to peak loads.

By contrast, today’s rigid or hybrid structures, unlike hinged/articulated ones, flex under load. This characteristic, along with the extension of loaded wire ropes, allows for more effective load distribution, just like your car’s suspension. It is not surprising therefore an articulated platform needs 50% more capacity to achieve the same safety/nominal lifting capacity.

The difference between rigid/hybrid and articulated designs becomes even more evident with difficult hull forms, such as those with interrupted keel blocks, large overhangs, or abnormal peak loads. However, the paramount advantage of the rigid/hybrid platform is still its enhanced safety.

Since its start in 1957, 283 installations have been ordered and we have lifted more than 3 million ships – a testament to the concept of lifting ships out of the water. In 2023 Syncrolift is considered the safest and most productive way to launch new ships and lift those in service. Even nuclear-powered submarines are lifted today with live reactors.

However, not all 283 installations are still in service – in fact, 89 (over 30%) of them are currently inactive.

Why? There are several reasons:

  1. Lack of maintenance – any mechanical device needs maintenance, or it will fail.
  2. The original Syncrolift was a package of constituent products with no overall design control.
  3. The original Syncrolift had no means of load indication, and many were often overloaded.
  4. The original Syncrolift had an extremely high starting current and was expensive to run.
  5. Some owners went out of business due to factors not necessarily related to the product.

In 67 years, some serious limitations of the original concept have been revealed which is hardly surprising, given that significant changes have occurred in shipbuilding technology. Many of those factors that made the original Syncrolift such a success have been overtaken by more effective designs and modern proven technology.

Again, safety must be paramount in the shipbuilding industry and should always come first. Many shiplifts have remained in service without incident after Lloyds Register introduced the Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment during the ’80s with that in mind. However, the safety of life and limb cannot be solely dependent on legacy engineering or the Maintenance Manager.

In recent years we have become aware of the growth of operational incidents occurring with articulated platforms. Wire Rope breakage has been the main factor in older lifts and the fact that those older platforms are articulated has become critical. If one wire rope breaks on an articulated platform it can cause platform sections to tip or fall. When that happens, the wire ropes in adjacent hoists go out of alignment, and the sheave edges can abrade those ropes too. In the worst case, the lift collapses and drops its load. This is not acceptable. As the OEM we have become increasingly concerned about this growth of articulated incidents to the point we think shiplift owners should be making changes for the safety of ships in the yard, and their personnel. Some prudent articulated shiplift owners have already secured platform beams with safety wires, and/or changed their articulated platforms to a rigid configuration. They are now benefiting from the upgrade to 2020’s technology. Our modern platform is a rigid structure, and in unlikely wire rope breakage case due to lack of maintenance or such circumstances, the platform structure absorbs the extra load until replacement of the wire can be made or continue the operation to reduce the load.

Note – we do not endorse other lifting media like chain as a means of ensuring correct design and functionality. Wire rope still remains the most suitable lifting medium for shiplifts, considering factors such as safety, redundancy, environmental impact, maintenance costs, downtime, risk assessment, smooth operation, component fatigue life, lack of proper monitoring, etc.

Why put your whole shipyard at risk when we can guarantee no platform structure will drop in the water if you change your articulated lift to a rigid configuration with Calypso?

For all the above reasons, and because this is so important, Syncrolift is today offering our “Calypso™” upgrade service so older shiplifts can be upgraded to a safer configuration and reduce the daily costs of operation.

As the OEM for all 283 Syncrolift installations, our free Calypso safety consultation will evaluate the safety of your older articulated Syncrolift on any installation with more than 4 hoists. Even 4-hoist units can benefit from modern technology. Many of the simple changes we will likely recommend can be undertaken by your own shipbuilding personnel.

Our recommended changes can range from simply upgrading the platform to a rigid structure, to changes in control functions, components, and the addition of a Fluid Bed Transfer System. These will all significantly increase your safety of operation while lowering your applied loads. In addition, you can derive even greater benefits, as follows:

  • Reduced power consumption
  • Increased Nominal lifting capacity. (>15%)
  • Increased component life, meaning overall life extension of your system.
  • Lower-cost electric motors
  • Major reduction in starting currents
  • Automated smart lifting.
  • Fast Docking systems like automated blocking and in-haul systems
  • Remote analysis so your problems can be evaluated without coming to the site.

The obvious success of Syncrolift has been imitated by others over the years, and there are a number of articulated platforms around the world that may or may not still be in service. So, if you are operating a shiplift supplied by Bardex, Brohl, Hydraudyne, IMG, Pearlson Shiplift Corp, Schiess Defries, or by others, call Syncrolift. Safety is our goal – and we will help you make your life safer, and hopefully save you some money too.

How do you know if your Syncrolift has an articulated platform? If no platform drawings are available, look at your Hoists or Motor Control Center. If there is a brass plate bearing the name “Pearlson Engineering Corp” you have an articulated platform.

Why not take advantage of this free consultation offer? We guarantee no platform structure will drop in the water if you change your articulated lift to a rigid configuration with Calypso.

National Fatherhood Initiative® and the City of Baytown Partner to Mobilize Father Engagement Across City Sectors

[ad_1]

Community mobilization is an assets-based model that identifies, responds to, and drives the mobilization of assets to create change in communities. Designed to equip community leaders with the tools needed to address father absence and promote father involvement, NFI’s multi-phase Community Mobilization Approach™ (CMA) creates an obtainable vision for rallying a community around responsible and committed fatherhood.

Baytown’s city-wide father engagement initiative will kick off in January 2024 with a workshop during which NFI staff will train community leaders to implement the CMA. NFI will also support leaders in completing a responsible fatherhood needs and assets assessment. Data on the current state of programs and services for fathers in the city will be gathered to produce a clear picture of the city’s fatherhood assets and the gaps that must be addressed to mobilize and build capacity to increase father involvement.

During the second phase of the CMA, Baytown will hold a Leadership Summit on Fatherhood facilitated by NFI and Baytown community leaders to generate input in developing a city action plan to promote responsible fatherhood. Through the summit and action plan development, Baytown will create a multi-sector Fatherhood Advisory Council (FAC) and a plan to guide the FAC in mobilizing the city that leverages NFI’s father-inclusive programs and resources.

“Many fathers in our city face challenges that prevent them from being actively engaged in their children’s lives, including drug or alcohol use,” said Thomas Reeves, Director of Public Affairs, with the City of Baytown. “Through our collaboration with National Fatherhood Initiative®, we seek to achieve positive change at home by creating safe and healthy environments for children, fathers, and families. This community mobilization effort will result in a much-needed roadmap for our city to deploy proven strategies that promote and support father involvement.”

NFI comes alongside human service organizations and practitioners with a strengths-based approach to father engagement training, evidence-based and evidence-informed fatherhood programs, and other educational materials to help them be more father inclusive. Developed in 1999, NFI has used its CMA to implement multiple community-based fatherhood initiatives as part of statewide efforts in Texas, Indiana, and Ohio and to launch regional and city-wide initiatives in six communities across the U.S.

“An injection of father-focused efforts into both the public and private sectors can have a profound impact on communities,” said Christopher Brown, president of National Fatherhood Initiative®. “NFI’s Community Mobilization Approach™ will create outcomes that are critical to sustaining buy-in from individuals and organizations to be intentionally father inclusive and providing those who serve Baytown fathers with the resources they need to succeed. We look forward in the coming year to collaborating with Mayor Capetillo and city leaders to launch this mobilization initiative.”

For more information on NFI, visit http://www.fatherhood.org. Learn more about the City of Baytown at baytown.org.

###
About National Fatherhood Initiative®
National Fatherhood Initiative® (NFI) was founded in 1994 to reverse our nation’s destructive trend toward father absence. Today, more than 18 million American children live in homes without a biological, step, or adoptive father. Yet, the fact remains that millions of families interact with human service organizations every year that are primarily mother-focused. Therefore, NFI’s mission is to increase father involvement by equipping human service organizations and communities with the father engagement training, programs, and resources they need to be father inclusive. Our vision is that all human service organizations and communities are proactively father inclusive so that every child has an involved, responsible, and committed father.

Accordingly, we accomplish our mission by:

  • Educating all Americans, especially fathers, through social media, earned media, research, and free resources.
  • Equipping organizations and communities with fatherhood programs and resources through training, planning, and technical assistance services.
  • Engaging and assisting organizations and communities in mobilizing at the micro-level and macro-level to increase fathers’ involvement in children’s lives.
