Maryland Ensemble Theatre Awarded Major National Grant Marking Milestone in National Recognition

“Since founding a theatre company, I’ve made it a special point to see a lot of disparate types of theatre and learn as much as I can from other theatre companies. When visiting the American Conservatory Theatre, Steppenwolf, Manhattan Theatre Club, Wooster Group, LaMama or Atlantic Theatre (all non-profits) I would take special care to look at their funding sources and almost without fail I’d see The Shubert Foundation. I knew that to be in the “national theatre
conversation” a theatre company had to be recognized by The Shubert Foundation.” – Tad Janes, Founding Artistic Director

In an era when theaters across the country are facing unprecedented challenges, The Shubert Foundation has continued to provide operational support to uplift the American Theatre at large. MET has faced many of the same hardships that have led countless theaters to close or reduce programming and with the support of major grants, individual donations and a creative and resourceful community, MET has continued to thrive.

“We are profoundly honored to have been chosen as a recipient of The Shubert Foundation’s grant. This investment not only validates the hard work and dedication of our entire team but also empowers us to dream bigger and reach further with our artistic and community-building initiatives.” – Katherine DuBois, Managing Director

Maryland Ensemble Theatre invites the community, its supporters, and all those who appreciate the transformative power of the arts to join in appreciating this momentous occasion. MET is currently in its 26th season, Survivors & Saviors, producing thirteen productions for mainstage and family audiences, opening the season with Angels in America Part One & Two, and
Dragon’s Love Tacos.

The 12th Annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day returns Oct. 18, 2023 to Increase Recognition of Options with Education, Events and Fundraisers

Breast reconstruction is shown to improve patients’ psychological, social and sexual well-being along with improving their quality of life allowing them to regain a sense of normalcy. Patients deserve full and accurate information to empower them to make the best decisions for their bodies. BRA Day promotes educating patients on the full range of options available to them so they can reclaim their bodies in a way that best supports their goals.

“The objective is to get patients adjusting to a new body comfortable again in their clothes and skin in a way that best serves them,” said Dr. Howard Levinson, MD, President of The PSF. “The significance of BRA Day is to make sure patients have both awareness and access to all their options to make the most well-informed choice that serves their unique needs.”

BRA Day is a movement that seeks to reduce obstacles in public education, patient care and research. BRA Day events worldwide bring attention to the varied options and procedures available plus give information to patients and their supporters so they can make informed decisions about their care. The significance is to make clear the breast cancer loop to complete healing doesn’t close until a patient is aware of every option. BRA Day events are happening throughout the U.S. on October 18 both locally and nationally to raise money to support research plus inform patients, family, caregivers and media partners of the many choices available for comprehensive healing. ASPS and The PSF launched the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign and the annual BRA Day in 2011.

The BRA Campaign has raised approximately $115,552 through the support of Diamond sponsor Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, campaign sponsors CareCredit and Integra LifeSciences and the many regional and local events. These contributions to the National Fund support vital research, charitable giving and awareness grants.
The movement doesn’t end there. Other fundraising efforts include the CareCredit donation program, which will continue through the end of October. CareCredit will donate $1 to the Breast Reconstruction Awareness campaign every time a CareCredit cardholder purchases $200 or more on their card with an ASPS-member doctor in the CareCredit network during October.

Capping off the month of awareness and support, the Breast Reconstruction Awareness 5K will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 a.m. at Brush Square Park in Austin, TX during Plastic Surgery The Meeting 2023. Participants can choose to run in person, virtually or show their support with literally no sweat by fundraising. Learn more and sign up at: Run The Close The Loop 5K | Plastic Surgery The Meeting.

About Breast Reconstruction
Studies show that women who undergo breast reconstruction experience significant improvements in psychological, social and sexual well-being. Every patient deserves to learn about the full complement of breast reconstruction options at the time of diagnosis. In fact, the two main reasons women do not undergo breast reconstruction are that patients are not referred to breast reconstructive surgeons and are not informed of their reconstructive options. Breast reconstruction is part of a comprehensive approach and treatment for breast cancer patients.

Integral to this cohesive team approach, are frequent meetings that occur to discuss each patient and their individualized treatment plan. Members of this group of specialists are breast surgeons, plastic pathologists, reconstructive surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, geneticists, nurses, patient care coordinators and more. Their collective insights guarantee that patients are not only aware of but also have access to a full range of reconstructive procedures, with decisions based on consensus among the team and ultimately the patient.

“Women need choices – they should be presented with the complete range of breast reconstruction options,” said Lynn Damitz, MD, ASPS Board Vice President of Health Policy & Advocacy. “Shared decision-making is the optimal goal where we are all part of the decision.”

For more information on breast reconstruction, visit http://www.breastreconusa.org. Become educated and help educate others about the availability of and access to breast reconstruction and why all women deserve a team approach to breast cancer treatment.

About ASPS

Learn How People with Pulmonary Hypertension ‘Live PHearlessly’ During PH Awareness Month

The Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s “Live PHearlessly” campaign strives to celebrate how the pulmonary hypertension community thrives despite a rare disease.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Every November, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) launches a national campaign to raise awareness about pulmonary hypertension (PH). This progressive rare disease is defined by high blood pressure in the lungs and can cause right-heart failure and even death.

For this year’s PH Awareness Month, PHA is launching the “Live PHearlessly” campaign to celebrate the resilience of individuals with PH. Throughout November, PHA will share inspiring stories that demonstrate how people from the PH community thrive while managing this rare disease. PHA will also share educational materials about risk factors, signs and symptoms.

PH contributes to more than 18,000 adult deaths each year in the United States. It can occur among those with left-heart disease; associated conditions such as sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or scleroderma; or from congenital heart disease. It affects people of any age, sex, race, or social or ethnic background.

PH is significantly underdiagnosed and misunderstood, even among health care providers. Symptoms, including shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain, aren’t specific to PH and can dangerously delay diagnosis. While PH is incurable, early diagnosis and proper treatment can extend and improve quality of life.

“PHA continues to share stories of the triumphs and challenges of individuals with PH. This awareness month we highlight how members of the PH community ‘Live PHearlessly,’ proving that a PH diagnosis doesn’t define them,” said PHA Board of Trustees chair Tony Lahnston. “The pulmonary hypertension community faces a bright future with increased awareness, improved support and advances in available treatments. PHA staff and leadership remain dedicated to fulfilling our mission to extend and improve the lives of those affected by PH.”

PHA’s outreach during November includes social media, advocacy, education and fundraising components. PHA’s PH Awareness Month digital toolkit includes social media profile and cover images, infographics, downloadable fact sheets and flyers, and other elements to raise awareness throughout November.

Notable PH Awareness Month Activities

1.CTEPH Awareness Day. PHA will raise awareness Nov. 8 about chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), a rare form of PH caused by blood clots in the lungs that harden over time and impede blood flow. Up to 5% of people who develop pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs) may develop CTEPH. Unlike some forms of PH, CTEPH has treatment options, including a potentially curative surgery.

To celebrate CTEPH Awareness Day, PHA will release videos in English and Spanish highlighting 10 important CTEPH facts. Additionally, PHA will share a video of CTEPH patient Mark Porter discussing his diagnosis and treatment journey. The day’s activities will conclude with a national virtual support group for those affected by CTEPH at 8 p.m. EST.

2. PHA’s Day of Action, Nov. 15, aims to elevate the pressing need for supplemental oxygen access. The PH community will share their supplemental oxygen stories and photos on social media; send letters to the editors of magazines, newspapers and online platforms; and urge Congress to improve access to supplemental oxygen.

3.Joining the global day of giving, PHA will celebrate GivingTuesday on Nov. 28, inviting community support and participation.

4. On Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. EST, PHA will host the first installment of the two-part webinar series, “Hope Through Research in Pulmonary Hypertension: Emerging Developments.” Simulcast in English and Spanish, this webinar will address developments in PH research and PHA’s investment in the clinical trial process. The second webinar, “Hope Through Research in Pulmonary Hypertension: Clinical Trails,” is Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. EDT. Both webinars were developed in partnership with FundaciSn Contra la HipertensiSn Pulmonar, a pulmonary hypertension organization in Spain.

5.In addition to virtual opportunities, PHA will host three in-person fundraising events:
