Dread River Distilling Master Series Batch 2 Bourbon Honors Veterans

After a grueling two-year training pipeline, the longest of any U.S. Special Operations Force, Bruner’s career as a CCT spanned deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and beyond. Those combat tours saw him attach with teams of America’s most elite Special Missions Units (Navy SEALs, Army Green Berets, etc.) Combat Controllers are among the most sought-after because they are responsible for communicating with and coordinating air power, all this while integrating into any of the various teams to which they may be attached.

“As my career in the military was coming to an end, I started to think about that next phase of life and what I would like to do,” said MSGT Trey Bruner. “Being from Louisville, Kentucky, I’ve always had bourbon in my blood. CCT is certainly a challenging career, in many ways. The physical and mental pressures of controlling a few dozen aircraft loaded with thousands of pounds of bombs and directing them onto targets can be intense. You end up getting close to the guys and it can sometimes be hard to just shut that off. As I transitioned away from that, I wanted to make sure I replaced that sense of belonging and community with something new. Dread River has really helped me with that.”

The transition from military service to civilian work can be challenging for some service members. The transition from CCT service to his role as an assistant distiller has allowed Bruner to make the most of his technical abilities and strategic planning skills in a rewarding environment.

Under the mentorship of head distiller, Joshua Goins, Bruner was tasked with barrel maturation management. During the process of pulling samples for analysis, Bruner encountered a truly unique bourbon aging in a 60-gallon French oak cask. He selected this single-cask bourbon to be the next Master Series and bottled it in honor of fellow veterans.

Dread River’s flagship Straight Bourbon is the first bourbon distilled in Birmingham in over 100 years. For the Master Series Batch 2 Bourbon, Dread River transferred the straight bourbon originally aged in American oak casks for one year into a 60-gallon French oak cask for an additional two years. The French oak finishing beautifully rounds out the flavors and provides additional vanilla and caramel flavors. The double-barrel cask finishing draws out the bold qualities of the straight bourbon distilled with a mashbill of 60 percent corn, 30 percent wheat, and 10 percent malted barley. It is hand-bottled at cask strength, 106 proof, or 53% alcohol by volume.

Dread River Master Series Batch 2 has a deep amber color belying its double-barrel aging. It is pleasantly aromatic with a blast of beautiful French oak vanilla, a hint of cacao, shades of caramel, and a sweet plum sendoff. The palate is mellow with flavors matching the nose carrying through a medium finish and lasting notes of delectable, toasted bread and a balance of sweet vanilla.

As much as Bruner has learned during his time at Dread River, however, it may be the distillery that has learned more from him.

“Bringing Trey onto our team has given everyone here a valuable sense of perspective,” said John Cubelic, founder, Dread River Distilling Co. “We tend to hyperbolize mundane things because they appear to be important in a given moment but what he has experienced in his military career is beyond our wildest nightmares. His mental and physical strength, his intelligence, his character are all things we admire and want to celebrate. We are proud to have Trey and to support the CCT community, and the entire USAF and DoD.”

Dread River’s exclusive Master Series Batch 2 Bourbon, hand-selected by MSGT Trey Bruner, is available for pre-order on October 25 and goes on sale nationwide on Veteran’s Day, Saturday, November 11 for a suggested retail price of $106.99. The distillery will host the premiere of its second “Dreadventure” episode, highlighting the career of MSGT Bruner and CCT community at a launch event in Birmingham on Veteran’s Day. Dread River is a proud partner of the First There Foundation, which benefits CCT members and their families. The Master Series Batch 2 Bourbon will be available to ship to most states nationwide, while supplies last.

Illume Fertility Appoints New Managing Director Signaling a Continued Dedication to the Practice’s Focus on Superior Patient Care

Buckey’s addition to the Illume Fertility leadership team signals a continued dedication to the practice’s focus on superior patient care and the future of reproductive medicine. Buckey will lead Illume Fertility in support of its overall vision and strategic direction by leading all non-clinical operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards, and identifying opportunities for innovation and growth, all while maintaining the high level and quality of care that Illume Fertility has proudly delivered for nearly 20 years.

“With her wealth of leadership and management experience, we are very excited to have Ms. Buckey lead the business function at Illume,” says Dr. Andrew Meikle, Founder of The Fertility Partners. “Suha’s goal is to always consider the patients’ perspective while striving to improve the administrative and operational aspects of our practice. This, combined with the medical excellence delivered by our dedicated physicians, embryologists and nursing teams will result in the continuous improvement of clinical results and the optimization of the end-to-end patient journey.”

Buckey has worked in the healthcare industry in the NYC Metro Area for 20 years in various disciplines, including Provider Relations at Healthfirst, Managed Care Operations and Strategic Planning at Beth Israel Medical Center, and Practice Operations at Stamford Health. Prior to joining the leadership team at Illume Fertility, Buckey served as Practice and Site Administrator for OB/GYN and Urogynecology at Stamford Health for the past six years, where she was responsible for business and clinical operations for nine practice locations across lower Fairfield County.

With both a personal and professional passion for reproductive healthcare, her transition to a fertility and family-building practice came naturally. “I was extremely fortunate in conceiving and delivering three healthy daughters,” Buckey said. “However, many of my close friends struggled with primary and secondary infertility, and through witnessing their struggles, I developed deep empathy for those whose path to parenthood wasn’t as clear cut as mine.” Buckey adds that she feels strongly about supporting people in their decision to build a family, in whatever shape that takes.

“What sets Illume apart is its holistic approach to building a family, including its dedication to patient advocacy, LGBTQIA+ inclusivity, and offerings of acupuncture, nutrition and genetic counseling, yoga and support groups,” said Suha Buckey, Managing Director at Illume Fertility. “I am very proud and excited to be associated with such an exceptional group of physicians, providers, and employees and to make an impactful contribution to the future of Illume.”

Her achievements include completing Scientist‐Astronaut Candidate training in 2015 with Project PoSSUM (Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere) and being part of the first crew to test a commercial spacesuit in zero gravity. In 2016, she was named as prime crew for Project Poseidon, which aims to further ocean and space exploration, while setting a world record for “most days spent under the sea.” She also received the Global Women of Vision Award in 2016.

Pandya also participated in a panel discussion with women in STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics—leadership roles who discussed their successes, challenges, and advice to others in pursuing their career goals.

The following panelists were:

  • Alicia Ponce, architect, founder, and Design Principal of APMonarch
  • Tammera Holmes, CEO of AeroStar Avion Institute NFP + AeroStar Consulting Corporation
  • Erin Miller, pilot, and granddaughter of a female Airforce service pilot

The entire presentation made an impression on Judson University President Gene Crume.

“There are a lot of great programs and amazing speakers this fall across many campuses,” he said. “But, in terms of leadership, women in science, and the STEAM fields, there was no presentation better than this one we had at Judson. This presentation was the first time that Dr. Pandya spoke in Chicago. The rest of the panelists were amazing representatives from their fields, and each woman had a positive and uplifting story to share with our audience.”

Ruiz added that it was an honor to gather these women from diverse backgrounds and careers onto the university’s stage.

“Hearing their conversations, key takeaways, insights—everything that we experienced was wonderful while we were making a difference in students’ lives,” she said. “That to me makes me very proud and honored to be the host of the World Leaders Forum Inspirational Series.”

The event proceeds went to leadership, entrepreneurship, diversity, and RISE program scholarships for students at Judson University.

During Thanksgiving week, the University will reveal the official video of the presentation and photos. To view these, visit the website.

World War II Veteran Carl Felton will serve as the honorary parade marshal for this year’s parade. After receiving training in Morse Code, Felton became a Signalman and assigned to the HMS Ceres. The ship was in charge of directing traffic in and out of Omaha Beach.

In the early morning hours of June 6, 1944, the ship left for Normandy and took heavy fire off the coast. Felton was stationed on the bridge, sending and receiving messages. Many ships around him were sunk. He was stationed at Omaha Beach throughout the summer of 1944 before moving on to Cherbourg to help rebuild the port. Felton was transferred in 1945 to the USS Baker, whose main job was to search for mines. He returned to New York City on the Queen Elizabeth in 1945 and was transferred to the USS Scott, which escorted a captured German submarine to Washington, D.C. Finally, Felton was sent to Florida to assist in the decommission of several ships and was honorably discharged in April 1946.

After the parade, attendees are encouraged to attend a reception at American Legion Post 96 in Brunswick. Food and beverages will be provided at no charge for attendees. For more information, check out the Brunswick Veteran’s Day Parade’s Facebook page.
