Two unsuspecting single parents will be surprised on Sunday October 6, 2019. The parents will receive a quality pre-owned vehicle from BMW of Sterling’s at one of two services at the Heritage Fellowship Church. These parents currently do not have reliable transportation and give tirelessly of their time and talent to others. While their names cannot be disclosed, their backgrounds are as follows:

  • Single mom – 2 children, ancient car about to give up the ghost, part of the Young Adult Ministry and has assisted with the computer program

  • Single Dad – widower, teen daughter still at home, assists with the Teen Church


The BMW of Sterling Community C.A.R.E. Program stands for Commitment, Assurance, Reliability and Excellence. While most businesses pay for this type of community outreach in the form of sponsorships, Sterling Motorcars is doing the work and coming from within the walls of their dealership. Our first launch event last April was a huge success. One of the single parents who received a car was able to get off of 15 years of welfare and is now working for Uber. Focusing on biases that are rooted in the subconscious, the session will explore the idea of implicit bias and how it can influence behaviors. Attendees will address bias in a safe environment and learn how to recognize their own biases while reducing the potential for microaggressions. Strategies for creating a diverse and equitable workplace will also be discussed.

She has designed and delivered sensitive people-focused training on topics including implicit bias, leadership development, bullying and harassment, teamwork, anger management and workplace violence prevention. Orbit Research announces support for the new USB HID Standard for Braille Displays

Orbit Research today announced that it has introduced support for the newly released USB HID standard for braille displays. It is the first developer and manufacturer of braille displays to support the new standard which eliminates the need for special software or drivers and enables plug-and-play operation between electronic braille displays and devices such as computers and smartphones.

As an innovator and leader in the field of refreshable braille, Orbit Research was instrumental in proposing the need in the industry for a common and open communication protocol between refreshable braille displays and screen reading software. In collaboration with industry leaders including Apple, Microsoft and Google, Orbit Research and other companies jointly worked towards creating a USB standard that allows braille displays to communicate with screen-reader software on diverse operating systems and hardware platforms. This now minimizes and possibly even eliminates the need for each refreshable braille display to be tested with each screen-reader every time a new version of the software or firmware is released.

Orbit Research today released a software update for its flagship refreshable braille display product, the Orbit Reader 20, making it the first braille display in the world to support the new standard.

“We are very proud to be the first braille display company to implement the new USB standard.” said Dr. Gina Spagnoli, Orbit Research’s founder. “We experienced first-hand the challenges in ensuring smooth interoperability between our first braille display product and screen-readers. The resources required to do this on an ongoing basis are enormous, especially considering the fact that there are over half a dozen popular screen-readers that our products support. Sign Language Interpreter Alan Abarbanell to Perform at Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Oct. 4

Sign language interpreter Alan Abarbanell will perform his Abababa Farewell Tour at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4 in Dale B. Lake Auditorium at Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Texas Township Campus. The performance is free and open to the community. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

For more than 10 years, Abarbanell has toured the U.S. with his critically acclaimed, one-man show, “The Abababa Road Tour” chronicling his experiences growing up hearing in a deaf family. ABABABA–a name given to him by a friend who could not pronounce Abarbanell – is a proud coda (Child of Deaf Adults). Alan wrote this show as a loving tribute to his deaf heritage and coda family. Each performance is dedicated to Alan’s parents Joe and Yetta Abarbanell whom he credits with his sense of humor, creativity and love for his community.

Abarbanell takes audiences on a roller coaster ride of emotion – first pulling them through the hilarious rush and shocking twists of his youth, then plunging them into the tragedy and loss that followed, only to hurl them toward laughter once again. With the simple wave of a hand, Abarbanell renders each audience exhausted from gales of laughter and torrents of tears by the show’s end.

Abarbanell is a veteran sign language interpreter originally from Chicago who, in addition to his 30 years of freelance work, has lectured nationally on the issues of interpreter ethics and coda family issues.

Michael P. Mallardi Writes New Book “Pen in the Spirit”

Michael P. Mallardi was born in East Harlem, on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1934. Born at home to a mother one generation removed from her Italian immigrant roots and an Italian immigrant father. He joined the American Broadcasting Company in 1956, and then spent the next 40 years, both within and outside ABC, in various executive positions in the media industry. He eventually became ABC’s Chief Financial Officer and one of three of the company’s Executive Vice Presidents.

He and Sylvia, his wife of 58 years, have two daughters Karen and Stephanie and one fabulous granddaughter, Natalie Joan, who has been his sunshine from the moment of her birth.
