Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois wins the Council on Accreditation’s 2019 Innovative Practices Award

The Council on Accreditation (COA) would like to congratulate Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois as the winner of the 2019 Innovative Practices Award for its Regenerations program!

The Innovative Practices Award identifies, documents, and celebrates examples of successful approaches to management and service delivery practices adopted by COA-accredited organizations. Too often great ideas are kept in-house without recognizing their potential to create change beyond. The purpose of the Innovative Practices Award is to amplify the effect of one great idea by elevating it to the national stage, offering it as a resource for direct service providers, leadership, researchers, and advocates across the full spectrum of human services.

This year’s evaluation process began with a preliminary round of submissions in which applicants provided a one-page synopsis of their innovative practice. 75 programs were submitted; six were selected to move forward. Five of these submitted their full case studies, which were reviewed by a team of expert judges. The community got to weigh in, as well, with over 1,000 public votes making up 5% of each submission’s final score. It was a tight competition with many strong submissions, but Regenerations came out on top.

You can download the case study of the Regenerations program here: https://sforce.co/2VjBGeE

ABOUT THE REGENERATIONS PROGRAM

Lutheran Child and Family Services (LCFS) Regenerations is an innovative and effective strengths-based program designed to support dually-involved (child welfare and criminal justice systems) adolescents over the age of 12. The premise is that by using a team approach and providing individualized wraparound services, these “at risk” youth will increase their sense of well-being, be contributing members of the community, and have the opportunity to lead healthy, meaningful lives.

Several objectives are part of the design. It begins with a referral to Regenerations when the youth is released from detention. Focusing on placement in a family-like setting rather than a residential facility and building a trusting relationship, LCFS staff work to provide intensive wraparound services to transition the individual into the community. On average, participants in Regenerations experience a shorter waiting period for release and are more likely to go to live in a family setting after release. It is also encouraging that there is a lower rate of recidivism for this group.

LCFS Regenerations is one of the only programs serving this population in the state of Illinois. Because of the positive impact locally, it is expected to become recognized as a model to replicate across the nation.

Afterward, she wrote a poem. I thought then, if she could write poetry, so could I. I read the Bible afterward, and God inspired me to write, especially after reading the book of Psalms. Psalms is my favorite book in the Bible. I always had a dream of writing a book and came up with the title, In my Dreams.”

Scott Odom’s newly released “Me and JC” is a beautiful tale about not letting dreams go and not losing faith in oneself and in God

News Image

“Me and JC”: a heartwarming children’s book that brings confidence, motivation, and faith in the Lord through a story about young Thumper whose hope was lost when his illness took over. “Me and JC” is the creation of published author Scott Odom, a camp counselor at Camp Sanguinity which is a camp for kids with cancer and blood disorders. He was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was fourteen which resulted in the loss of his right leg above the knee. Yet, he still went on to become the first above-knee amputee to play in a professional basketball game and also cofounded a nonprofit, ABI, which hosts benefit charity basketball games to help kids with cancer and their families. Scott’s mission is to give people hope through his story in hopes it will plant a seed or strengthen their relationship with Christ.

Odom shares, “Me and JC is a story of hope. Thumper’s dream was to become a professional athlete, but his whole life changed when he was diagnosed with cancer which resulted in the loss of his leg. Thumper felt his lifelong dream would never become a reality, and he lived in fear while battling the cancer. He had a hard time fitting in and was ashamed about the way he looked. Thumper was lacking confidence in himself as he would get teased for the way he looked with his robot leg.

“While Thumper was learning how to walk on his robot leg, he found it was very difficult. He was scared and very doubtful; he would never be the same again. Thumper had to learn to build a relationship with his robot leg and trust that it would be there when he took a step, helping him to walk. It was through this battle and relationship in his life where along the way Thumper met a friend that would forever change his outlook on life. This friend gave Thumper the confidence to believe in himself and to know that he has a bigger purpose for his life than what his dream was.

“The story of Me and JC shares the relationship that Thumper has with his friend JC while symbolizing our relationship with Christ. Just as Thumper began to fully trust JC every day, he was able to live out his true purpose. The same goes for anyone who fully trust God daily. No matter what may happen in life, how hard it may get, or how uncertain things may become, trust in Him always and know that you have a purpose in this life.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Scott Odom’s new book is an inspiring read that gives kids who are struggling with cancer or with disabilities someone to look up to or relate to through reading Thumper’s story. Likewise, everyone else will also be inspired in his story as they will see how hard he tried just to overcome the challenges of finding his true purpose in life.

With the author creating a mascot of the main character, Thumper, he is planning to take him all over the country to visit kids in children hospitals, schools, churches, camps, and in many more places to bring the book to life and share the message of hope it has.

Episcopal Relief & Development Partners with the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in response to Tropical Storm Imelda

News Image

“Imelda has impacted many who were slowly restoring their homes. We remain supportive of the diocese as they continue to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members of their community,” said Katie Mears, Senior Director, US Disaster Program.

Episcopal Relief & Development is supporting the Episcopal Diocese of Texas as they respond to Tropical Storm Imelda by providing emergency supplies and support for vulnerable communities impacted by the devastating flooding.

Tropical Storm Imelda dropped more than two feet of rainfall over eastern Texas in mid-September, causing record-breaking flooding in many areas. Parts of Montgomery County and Chambers-Jefferson Counties reported over 40 inches of rainfall. According to the Weather Channel, Imelda is the fifth-wettest tropical cyclone on record in the continental United States.

The organization’s US Disaster team is supporting the Diocese of Texas on a response to the needs of vulnerable communities, many of which were also affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Diocesan staff, clergy and volunteers are distributing gift cards for food, clothing and cleaning supplies. The Abundant Harvest food truck and other church food pantries are providing hot meals and the Laundry Love ministry is helping flood survivors to wash and dry their laundry with the support of Episcopal Relief & Development and the diocese. At the same time, churches within the diocese are working to provide storage for salvageable items while people begin to rebuild. The diocese is also supporting those who have lost wages due to the storm through rental assistance.

“The Episcopal Diocese of Texas has had a lot of hands-on experience with disaster response in the last few years,” said Katie Mears, Senior Director, US Disaster Program at Episcopal Relief & Development. “Imelda has impacted many who were slowly restoring their homes. We remain supportive of the diocese as they continue to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members of their community.”

Please pray for the individuals and families affected by Tropical Storm Imelda. Learn more about Episcopal Relief & Development’s US Disaster Program’s long-term disaster programs here. Donations to the Hurricane Relief Fund will help Episcopal Relief & Development and Church partners respond to the crisis.

For over 75 years, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working together with supporters and partners for lasting change around the world. Each year the organization facilitates healthier, more fulfilling lives for more than 3 million people struggling with hunger, poverty, disaster and disease. Inspired by Jesus’ words in Matthew 25, Episcopal Relief & Development leverages the expertise and resources of Anglican and other partners to deliver measurable and sustainable change in three signature program areas: Women, Children and Climate.
