Tori Kelly Joins Cory Asbury For Surprise New ‘Reckless Love’ Recording

It is such an honor to be able to join Cory on this new version of one of the most powerful worship songs of this generation. —Tori Kelly

GRAMMY®-winning pop superstar Tori Kelly joins GRAMMY®-nominated Bethel Music singer/songwriter Cory Asbury for a brand-new recording of Asbury’s 2018 genre-defying megahit, “Reckless Love.” Now available on streaming platforms, the reimagined rendition coincides with the release of Asbury’s Charisma House devotional, “Reckless Love: A 40-Day Journey Into the Overwhelming, Never-Ending Love of God.”

The new track opens with a simple acoustic guitar, putting Kelly’s soulful vocal centerstage on the first verse. Produced by LaeL (Number One Gun, kalley), the rhythmic, organic track gradually builds through Asbury’s second verse, ultimately showcasing the duo’s rich harmonies over a climactic chorus.

“Tori and I have met a few times at different awards shows, and I also connected with her husband, André, a while back over social media,” Asbury explains of the new recording’s genesis. “He told me they loved my album and were really impacted by ‘Reckless Love.’ When we were brainstorming ways to reimagine the song, we decided to rerecord it with someone we really admire. I’m a massive fan of Tori’s talent and her name came up quickly. I reached out to André and he said she would love to do it, and she absolutely destroyed the vocal!”

“Getting to be a part of this beautiful song is so special for me. I have been a big fan of Cory’s music for a while and I have seen how his music has impacted people,” Kelly told Billboard.com. “I personally have had many experiences where I have cried tears of overwhelming joy while listening to ‘Reckless Love’ and it has filled my heart with a sense of gratitude. It is such an honor to be able to join Cory on this new version of one of the most powerful worship songs of this generation.”

The duet marks Asbury’s return to the spotlight following a year-long sabbatical. His original recording of “Reckless Love,” which serves as the title-track of Asbury’s 2018 Bethel Music solo debut, quickly became one of the biggest hits in Christian music history. Written by Asbury, along with Caleb Culver and Ran Jackson, the single spent a total of 18 weeks at #1 on Christian radio charts. “Reckless Love” was also nominated for a 2019 GRAMMY® Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song and took home Song of the Year and Worship Song of the Year trophies at the 49th Annual GMA Dove Awards in 2018. Embraced around the world, “Reckless Love” was recently named Billboard’s #4 Christian song of the decade and has garnered more than 144 million combined streams on Spotify and Apple Music.

“When I reflect on ‘Reckless Love’ in the context of my past year—being totally off the road and just focusing on being with my family—I hear God say, ‘You’re not behind,’” adds Asbury, who continues to serve as a worship pastor at Kalamazoo, Michigan’s Radiant Church. “Walking away from all the success the song brought might have looked like a stupid decision, but He tells us to evaluate our lives by His thoughts and His Word—that’s all that matters. For all of us, I hope hearing Him speak amidst the anxieties we face in our workplaces will correct a lot of the accusations we feel on a daily basis.”

Dominique Wilkin’s 60th Birthday Celebration

Dominique Wilkins 60th birthday

Wilkins says, “I love the City of Atlanta! It has given me so much and it’s time I use my platform to give back. It’s my honor to serve on KultureCity’s board and advocate for those with sensory needs.”

“The Human Highlight Reel”, Dominique Wilkins, is celebrating his 60th birthday this weekend with a fundraiser for KultureCity, a leading non-profit recognized nationwide for using their resources to revolutionize and effect change in the community for those with sensory needs; not just those with autism. Atlanta’s favorite son chose his city to celebrate this milestone.

The nine-time NBA All-Star and one of the best dunkers in NBA history has now committed to making venues throughout the world inclusive for all to attend. Wilkins serves as the Chairperson of the board for KultureCity. Wilkins has 3 children with special needs and understands the importance of inclusion for all. Wilkins says, “I love the City of Atlanta! It has given me so much and it’s time I use my platform to give back. It’s my honor to serve on KultureCity’s board and advocate for those with sensory needs.”

Sponsors of the event include: Selig Enterprises, Dixon Hughes Goodman, 3A, Kroger, Roger House (Axiom), MINI USA, Piedmont Healthcare, Attorney Ray Giudice, Oxygen Financial, Country Financial, Atlanta Falcons, Meeting Advice and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, and others.

Alpa Patel, Tax Partner in Dixon Hughes Goodman’s Atlanta office states, “At DHG, we are proud to support the causes that are important to our people and our clients. We are honored to sponsor KultureCity’s event at Scofflaw Brewing, which will raise funds to help improve the lives of those living with disabilities.”

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to over stimulation and noise, which is an enormous part of the environment in a venue. With the certification, venues are now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible when attending any event.

Moving the Needle at Third and Pine – Seattle based Novaby Makes Placemaking History with Mixed Reality Experiment

News Image

Julia Beabout, CEO of Novaby, explains: “Placemaking boosts the social, cultural and economic value of spaces by fostering a deeper relationship between the people and the places they inhabit”

Seattle’s warp-speed growth has led to unintended consequences that have not only thrust the city into the national spotlight this past year, but struck at the very heart of the kind of city Seattle aims to be. Frustrated with the rhetoric, one Seattle startup has taken the conversation to the literal street at the center of the controversy: 3rd Ave between Pike and Pine.

Novaby, a digital art production company, has created a location-based, mixed-reality Placemaking experience with the goal of moving the needle in a positive way on this historic but often overlooked block. This first-of-its-kind digital approach uses viewer’s mobile phones to recreate neighborhood stories and historic building features in augmented reality along with a new 46 story skyscraper under development on 2nd Ave.

The digital experience called Past Present Future: a tense balance was launched during the Seattle Design Festival in collaboration with Raven & Fox Design and Cognuxant. It invites viewers into a fun and surprising conversation about how to balance the past with the present and future demands that rapid growth brings.

What is Placemaking? And why does it matter? Julia Beabout, CEO of Novaby, explains: “Placemaking boosts the social, cultural and economic value of spaces by fostering a deeper relationship between the people and the places they inhabit. Augmented reality technology enhances this by revealing otherwise hidden qualities, opening locations in new ways, and making them more accessible, enjoyable and relevant to a wider number of people.”

Novaby sees the experience as a way to give back and offer value to their community in terms of social cohesion, cultural richness and environmental sustainability. The goal of the experience is to build social capital around 3rd and Pine by creating a positive presence that encourages the community to visit the area, learn about its history and significance, and experience what it means to those that live and work there.

Past Present Future: a tense balance is free and open to the public. It will be reprised as an event in the spring and summer of 2020. In the meantime, interested participants can arrange for individual or group tours here

About Novaby: Novaby is a global digital art production company and animation studio specializing in 3D content and augmented reality. You can follow their AR Placemaking initiatives in Seattle and around the country on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn

Paintings for Lent by Suzanne Zoole

painting of a reliquary by artist Suzanne Zoole

One of the many paintings by artist Suzanne Zoole that will be on display at Kanuga’s Chapel of the Transfiguration, February 13-April 15.

“Churches have historically served as spaces for expression through the visual arts. Kanuga is honored to host this exhibit for Western North Carolina during Lent, a time of reflection for the community,” said Michael R. Sullivan, President of Kanuga.

This winter, Kanuga’s Chapel of the Transfiguration is proud to serve as the location for Reliquaries: Paintings for Lent by Suzanne Zoole. The pieces will be on exhibit February 13-April 15 with an opening reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on February 13.

“Churches have historically served as spaces for expression through the visual arts. Art opens us to thoughts and experiences too deep for words. Kanuga is honored to host this exhibit for Western North Carolina during Lent, a time of reflection for the community,” said Michael R. Sullivan, President of Kanuga.

The exhibit features 12 paintings of reliquaries—ornate and embellished boxes which are traditionally created to hold and protect religious relics. The paintings are displayed within the chapel’s transept. In front of the altar is a special piece constructed by the Suzanne’s brother, Roger Amidon. A blacksmith and seasoned craftsman, Roger rendered his version of a reliquary to be a part of this exhibition.

Suzanne’s paintings are images of reliquaries on sheets of masonite. “I thought the unrefined aspect of masonite would make a nice contrast to the gold embellishment that is associated with the fine craftsmanship of the reliquary,” said Suzanne. “I have used acrylic paints throughout with some touches of collage.”

Images on the sides of traditional reliquaries usually portray stories from the Bible. Suzanne chose to select stories from the New Testament. “I illustrated various stories beginning with Jesus’s miracles and ending with a parable,” said Suzanne. “To complete the paintings, I added a background of design and flowers to balance the colors and composition.”

The exhibit is a departure from Suzanne’s usual styles of icon painting and modern art. “Icon painting is a very meditative experience, while modern art is very creative,” said Suzanne. “Creating pieces for this exhibit was the best of both worlds. It was a combination of meditation and creativity.”

“Zoole’s paintings are inviting, expressive, and fresh interpretations of a classical form. I know that our community will appreciate sitting with them during this important time of year,” said Michael.

United Way of the Greater Triangle’s Durham One Fund Now Accepting Donations to Support Durham Residents Displaced During McDougald Terrace Evacuation

United Way of the Greater Triangle Durham One Fund McDougald Terrace

United Way of the Greater Triangle’s Durham One Fund will begin accepting donations to support Durham’s McDougald Terrace residents impacted by the high carbon monoxide levels and mold conditions.

United Way of the Greater Triangle announced today that the Durham One Fund will begin accepting donations to support the McDougald Terrace residents impacted by the high carbon monoxide levels and mold conditions reported within the housing authority complex last week. The organization is also immediately allocating nearly $53,000 of funds currently available through the Durham One Fund to provide $250 stipends that individuals and families who have been, or plan to be, evacuated can use to purchase food and other personal items.

“These individuals and families already have enough to worry about without the added pressure of surviving a dangerous situation like this one. It’s imperative as a community that we have support structures in place to help our neighbors when they need it most and that’s exactly what the Durham One Fund was designed to do,” said Eric Guckian, President and CEO of United Way of the Greater Triangle. “We are devastated for the people who have lost loved ones, are displaced from their homes, or are suffering from health-related conditions as a result of this situation and we are committed to providing the short-term and long-term support they need to stabilize and rebuild their lives in the days, months, and years following.”

Individuals can donate directly to the Durham One Fund online at https://unitedwaytriangle.org/durham-one-fund/

The Durham One Fund was created by United Way of the Greater Triangle – along with partners including Triangle Community Foundation, Durham County, City of Durham, Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Durham, Discover Durham, Upstream Works Collaborative, and other local nonprofit organizations – in response to April 2019’s gas explosion in Downtown Durham and has already distributed more than $160,000 to support those affected by that disaster. The fund’s goal is to provide short-term and long-term support that will help stabilize and re-build the lives of individuals and families impacted by loss, injury, displacement, disruption, and/or other impacts as a result of unforeseen disasters.

More than 170 families have been displaced from McDougald Terrace to surrounding hotels since Durham Housing Authority began evacuations on January 3. Another 40 families are currently on a waiting list to receive a hotel voucher.

Physical items including gently used clothing, shoes, and jackets as well as unopened toiletries, feminine products, baby formula and food, and non-perishable food items are greatly needed. Donations can be dropped off to the Durham Housing Authority at the T.A. Grady Recreation Center (531 Lakeland St., Durham, NC 27701).

United Way of the Greater Triangle will be working with Ashley Canady, President of McDougald Terrace Public Housing Council to identify and distribute the immediate $250 stipends to displaced residents.

If you are involved with a nonprofit or government entity that has experienced an unbudgeted or unforeseen increase in critical services as a result of the McDougald Terrace evacuation and would like to request Durham One Fund support, please contact Nick Allen, Chief Program Officer at United Way of the Greater Triangle, at nallen@unitedwaytriangle.org.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation Awards Crucial Grants

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Foundation (CPARF) is proud to announce the award of nearly $16,000 in funding to its 2019 Small-Grant Cohort. CPARF funds research that will change the lives of people with CP, a disability that affects 18 million people globally.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Foundation (CPARF) is proud to announce the award of nearly $16,000 in funding to its 2019 Small-Grant Cohort. The winning grants fund critical researcher training, equipment, and travel to several underserved nations to help treat people with cerebral palsy (CP) and assist their families.

CPARF funds research that will change the lives of people with CP, a disability that affects 18 million people globally.

Each member of the 2019 Small-Grant Cohort advances CPARF’s mission in a tailored way. A training grant will support Dr. Susanne Martin Herz of University of California, San Francisco, as she learns how to administer the General Movements Assessment to diagnose CP quickly and prescribe vital early intervention therapies. She will share her experience with pediatricians in low- and middle-income countries and guide US-based pediatricians, leading to earlier diagnosis and treatment.

A small equipment grant will enable Northeastern University’s Dr. Danielle Levac to set up a mobile virtual reality (VR) lab to understand how children with CP learn new movement skills in VR, as well as how they can transfer these skills to real environments. The lab’s mobility will help them reach more children than they ever have before.

CPARF’s travel grants will take researchers to Malawi, Belize, and Zimbabwe. Katherine Herman and Juliette Schmidli of Otis College of Art and Design will teach caregivers in Malawi to use Appropriate Paper-Based Technology — affordable, templated, corrugated cardboard chairs that support children with CP so that they can sit upright, strengthen weakened muscles, and increase eye contact and social interaction as they observe their surroundings from a new perspective.

Dr. Margaret Cristofalo of Seattle University will visit the Children’s Rehabilitation Unit (CRU) in Zimbabwe to study how caregivers experience raising children with developmental disabilities. She will identify ways to improve long-term outcomes for children with CP and strengthen quality of life for their families. She will support interventions for these children, ensure that their caregivers give appropriate, effective care, and help support research at the CRU.

Long Island University’s Dr. Nia Mensah will lead occupational and physical therapy students as they treat children with disabilities on a life-changing spring break trip to Belize — a country with nearly 400,000 people that currently has no occupational therapists and only one physical therapist.

CPARF will announce its Large-Grant Cohort later this year.

CPARF’S MISSION

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation won’t stop until people with CP can live pain-free, until they can live the lives they envision for themselves, and until they can express what’s on their mind and be understood even when they can’t communicate verbally. We won’t stop until we can prevent CP in the first place. We won’t stop until we find a cure. As the only organization in the world solely focused on CP research, CPARF is poised to reshape the disability landscape. We’re poised to make breakthroughs. We are poised to change lives.
