Getting Home is the inspiring story of a defense lawyer and a schoolteacher who left their careers to rebuild homes for desperate survivors of Hurricane Katrina but wound up reconstructing the entire process for rebuilding after disasters. Authors Liz McCartney and Zack Rosenburg describe how SBP, the disaster relief nonprofit they founded, partnered with Toyota to apply the #lean principles of the Toyota Production System (TPS) to shrink the timeline for rebuilding homes following hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.

Rosenburg will share SBP’s true continuous improvement story – successes and challenges – in a keynote presentation at the 32nd annual Shingo Conference on Friday, April 17, 2020, in Orlando, according to the Boston-based nonprofit publisher Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI).

Rosenburg will reveal:

  • A proven new rebuilding model for making #disasterrecovery faster, more predictable, and with much less emotional and financial distress for victims;
  • A practical story of how citizens and governments can improve #disasterpreparedness;
  • The importance of understanding intolerable conditions, and how to address them through root-cause problem solving;
  • Why expertise is unnecessary if you have the right mindset;
  • The importance of culture and workplace identity;
  • Examples that inspire the use of TPS.

The annual conference is sponsored by the Shingo Institute, part of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. The institute is named for the late Shigeo Shingo, a key contributor to the development of lean management principles. For more information and to register, visit the conference web page.

Special Learning, Inc. to Address Problem Behaviors Ethically in Schools in LIVE and Interactive Webinar Series with Expert Dr. Ronnie Detrich, PhD

News Image

“We are excited to team-up with an ABA and Educational Legacy, Dr. Ronnie Detrich, Ph.D., to equip professionals and parents with information to support students disfranchised due to their challenging behaviors in the school sector.” Karen Chung, CEO at Special Learning, Inc.

Special Learning, Inc. announced today that they are launching a 10-hour live and interactive webinar series in conjunction with Dr. Ronnie Detrich, PhD. in Addressing Challenging Behaviors Ethically in Schools Series. Dr. Ronnie Detrich has over five decades of experience in working with schools and districts that serve students with disabilities, autism, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD and other mood disorders. Over the years he has facilitated and demonstrated methodologies in which schools and school districts can embrace inclusion to include students who engage in challenging and problematic behaviors. With this 5-part series, Dr. Ronnie and selected elite Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in this area, will share and educate professionals, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, Psychologists, Speech Language Pathologists, Parents and Educators on how-to comply with IDEA regulations, and “No child left behind,” for a subset of students that previously may have been excluded from a free and appropriate education.

STUDENTS WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS DISPLAYED IN THE SCHOOL SETTING

In recent years, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been welcomed in the school sector from adopting Positive Behavior Strategies (PBS), tier systems, addressing social impact for students with problem behaviors on 504 Plans and Individualized Education Plans (IEP). However, there are students who display problematic behaviors that many schools are not equipped to address. Some of these behaviors observed can be students who run away from the school, physical aggression and fighting of other students and educators, destruction of school property, to name a few. When students engage in behaviors of this magnitude, they tend to have increased chances of being suspended, expelled, arrested, or incarcerated. Ultimately, these students lose out on a valuable education and a prosperous and independent future. It is at these points, where the school may call upon an expert in the field of ABA called a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to work with the school and the student’s team to decrease these behaviors and increase their time in school to obtain an appropriate education.

ADDRESSING CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS IN SCHOOLS ETHICALLY WITH EXPERTS IN ABA

When a student is referred to Behavior Analysis services, often, the student has engaged in problem behaviors that have resulted in suspensions, and on in some instances have placed the student at risk of being expelled. Along with this, students who engage in challenging behaviors also disrupt the education of their pupils. This is where the science of Applied Behavior Analysis goes beyond Autism Services and addresses the overall needs of students to maintain an education and prosper as an adult.

When an ABA expert, BCBA, addresses challenging behaviors of a student there are potential barriers to treatment to include, but not limited too: (1) lack of financial resources from the school (2) lack of extra staff to support the student (3) school structure and culture differs from one education system to the next (4) lack of positive motivation from the administration, staff and student’s themselves

With these barriers, progress for a student is minimal. The only way to support a student with challenging behaviors is to have the BCBA, educator, administration, Speech Therapists and the parents come together as a team to implement a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

BRIDGING THE GAP AND INCREASING INCLUSION FOR STUDENTS WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS

Special Learning, Inc has teamed up with Dr. Ronnie Detrich, Ph.D. to tackle head-on the need for Behavior Analysis in schools for students who display challenging behaviors. In the 5-part (10-hour) live webinar series called “Addressing Challenging Behaviors Ethically in Schools”, Dr. Detrich and SMEs will interactively- using proprietary technology- demystify the barriers to treatment in schools and provide professionals, educators and parents with the information, education and empowering tools to successfully assist student’s with challenging behaviors remain in the school setting. This series will cover:

  • MODULE 1: How to Maximize the Value and Facilitate Collaboration Across Service Providers (LIVE March 11, 2020)
  • MODULE 2: Must-have Skills (and Understanding) for School-based BCBAs and Other Service Providers (LIVE April 8, 2020)
  • MODULE 3: Assessing Problem Behaviors in Schools and Developing a BIP Implementation Team (LIVE May 13, 2020)-
  • MODULE 4: Using ABA Programming in Schools in a Collaborative Model to Begin to Manage Problem Behaviors (LIVE June 10, 2020)
  • MODULE 5: How to Implement Behavior Change Programs to Affect Sustainable, Positive Change (LIVE August 12, 2020)

“We are excited to team-up with an ABA and Educational Legacy, Dr. Ronnie Detrich, Ph.D., to support professionals, educators, BCBAs, administrators and parents to ultimately equip them with the information, education and empowerment to ultimately support students who have historically been disfranchised due to their challenging behaviors presented in the school sector and increase the student’s chances of being independent as they become adults.” said Karen Chung, CEO at Special Learning, Inc.

when baby Jesus was born” is an enthralling account that shows readers the series of events that happened in Bethlehem

News Image

“I Was There…: when baby Jesus was born”: an engrossing storybook that reveals a realistic image about what it was like to be present during the birth of Christ Jesus. “I Was There…: when baby Jesus was born” is the creation of published author K.L. Keltre, a person who has a strong faith and vast love for God.

Keltre writes, “I was there when Jesus was born describes in detail what it was like to have been a child in Bethlehem during the birth of baby Jesus. As narrated through the eyes of a little girl, Sarah, the story vividly describes Bethlehem to create a realistic image of what it was like to have lived during that time including side notes and illustrations on the most interesting facts. The story describes the homes, the people’s jobs, what they ate and the clothes they wore providing a new sense of how it felt to be in Bethlehem leading up to the birth in the manger on that starry night.

“I was there is the first book in a series on Biblical events directed at giving readers a child’s view including expanded historical and geographical notes. Each book will have a different girl or boy narrator/character from the event time. These narrators will bring a fresh perspective into these events to provide a unique child’s viewpoint on what took place at these well-known biblical stories. Each book will provide new facts that the children may not have known and make the events feel more real to them. Hopefully, these books will encourage parents to read these stories with their children, Sunday school teachers to read to their classes, or older children to read along to discover new biblical details while being fun and interesting to both child and parent.

“A portion of each book sold will be donated to St. Jude Research Children Research Hospital.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, K.L. Keltre’s new book is a profound account that tells a lot of Biblical stories where children can get an understanding about the people’s life before and during the birth of Jesus.

With this purpose, the author describes the Biblical events to bring fresh perspectives in order to provide an interesting and understandable viewpoint to kids about what happened in these popular Bible stories.

It was a huge cross he had placed in front of his property on Hugh Howell Road, Stone Mountain, Georgia, for Valentine’s Day. I was so impressed by that picture.
