Dr. Kevin Postol Volunteers Dental Office to Serve as Collection Hub for Used CPAP Machines

Dr. Kevin Postol

“I instantly realized – we know a lot of patients who no longer have use for their old CPAP machines, and there must be many more people in the community who may have old units or spare parts they would like to donate to such a cause.” – Dr. Kevin Postol

Across the country, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals on the front lines lack proper personal protection equipment (PPE) equipment to protect themselves while providing life-saving care to patients affected by COVID-19. Dr. Kevin Postol of Ballwin, MO, has found a way to help.

Hunter Engineering and Washington University (under the directive of Dr. Jennifer Delaney) have teamed up to create a new powered air purifying respirator unit PAPR that can be utilized by medical teams treating COVID-19 positive patients. As the lack of N95 masks and face shields has reached critical levels, more and more healthcare teams are falling ill, thinning the lines of defense against the spread of the virus.

These PAPR units can be built using parts from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines. CPAP units are often prescribed and issued to patients with sleep apnea, a condition that causes temporary cessation of breathing at night, to keep the patient’s airway open. However, due to their bulk, noise, and lack of comfort, thousands of these machines sit in homes unused. Some belong to patients from Dr. Postol’s practice.

“CPAP machines were the standard of care for sleep apnea for decades,” says Belinda Postol, who heads up the Sleep Disorder side of her husband’s thriving family dental office. “Today, sleep dentistry lets us treat sleep apnea using an oral appliance, meaning many of our patients are no longer using their old CPAP machines.”

The CPAP machine motors and tubing can be cleaned, disinfected, and repurposed in the PAPR production process. The PAPR units can then be distributed to hospitals to provide protection to healthcare professionals.

“We heard about the initiative being headed up by Hunter Engineering,” says Dr. Postol. “I instantly realized – we know a lot of patients who no longer have use for their old CPAP machines, and there must be many more people in the community who may have old units or spare parts they would like to donate to such a cause.”

Dr. Postol’s office is accepting donations of used CPAP machines and parts for recycling at their office starting April 15th. The office will accept these items Mondays through Thursdays from 9 am to 5 PM and using specialized protocols to protect both the public and themselves. The units and parts will be sent to aid in the PAPR production effort.

“At times like these, it’s all about working together – as a community and as a nation,” says Dr. Postol. “This is one thing we can do to help the brave men and women who are treating those who have fallen victim to this terrible virus. We look forward to seeing our practice family and the rest of our local community come together to be a part of this unprecedented recycling event.”

Does It Really Matter?” is an impassioned story of the author’s journey of realizing God’s plan for his life

News Image

“God, Why Am I Still Here?: Does It Really Matter?”: a perspicacious account that details the author’s experiences of joy, sorrow, and learning his purpose in life in God. “God, Why Am I Still Here?: Does It Really Matter?” is the creation of published author Cletus Cottrell, a writer of songs and poems and a navy veteran.

Cottrell shares, “As us four brothers were growing up, I felt there was something different about us that just wasn’t in conformity to other youngsters in our area. This affected our lifestyle, our schooling process, and of course, our lonely secluded family life. We all want to grow up in a lovable happy home together, like other kids in our neighborhood. Just because we didn’t have the nice clothes, a big beautiful fancy house, new car, I didn’t feel equal or the same as others. We had to make the best of what we had on our rural farm, then get uprooted, and moved from one foster home to another that I began to feel abnormal or different. Why did I feel this way, why am I here, and what was I supposed to do with my life?

“It’s through the daily reading of God’s Word and prayer that keeps me from backsliding down the wrong path again.

“I’m also hoping that through this book, that if just one person who is suffering from the same problems gets just one helpful thing from it, then this book was intended to be written and worth it. Amen?”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Cletus Cottrell’s new book is a wonderful proclamation of a man blessed by God despite his doubt and depravity that stemmed from early moments of negligence and pain.

This book hopes to instill resounding wisdom to readers as they witness a testament of forgiveness and redemption that reinforces the benevolence of God for the broken and unrighteous.

Second Opinion Expert Announces Release of Online COVID-19 Risk Assessment.

COVID-19 Risk Assessment

COVID-19 Risk Assessment

Our hope that this fast, free and comprehensive risk assessment tool will help save lives. Our plan is to continue to work alongside public health organizations to provide effective solutions that benefit society.

SecondOpinionExpert, Inc. (SOE), a leading health care technology company, announced today that it is providing free online access to a comprehensive assessment questionnaire for anyone seeking an evaluation of their current level of risk related to the COVID-19 virus. The evidence-based tool was developed by medical experts based on the latest global data on the virus. It will help people make better personal health care decisions about their COVID-19 risk and will aid in efforts to combat the spread of the disease.

The online questionnaire helps determine an individual’s risk from possible exposure to COVID-19 by taking into account all the factors, stages and variances in symptoms to provide a perspective on their unique current status. As an evidence-based assessment, it focuses on the user’s history and symptoms and is a safe and effective means to help make prudent health care decisions in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tool provides users with recommended possible next steps that they can explore as needed with a physician or other medical provider.

Since the assessment is performed online, users do not have to leave home, thus avoiding the risk of potential exposure involved with visiting a medical facility or lab. Results are displayed immediately at the conclusion of the assessment, providing the ability to review and download a full report. The report, along with a comprehensive list of current symptoms, can then be shared digitally with a physician in consultation on appropriate next steps. All personal information is completely secure and confidential utilizing SOE’s patented HIPAA compliant technology platform which adheres to the highest standards of data security. Data and results are private unless users specifically authorize access to their physician or other health care providers.

The evidence based online digital assessment is not a substitute for the biological test, but complementary to the biological test. Results are not binary (yes or no) like a biological test, but are a four-level risk assessment for infection: 1) Remote, 2) Possible, 3) Probable, or 4) Certain. One advantage of this assessment is that users only need to seek medical help in the case of “Certain Infection” or “Probable infection.” Moreover, the assessment can be taken any number of times as the situation changes.

“I have reviewed the questions and I have contributed to the development of this innovative tool,” said Dr. Venkatraman Sadanand, Pediatric Neurosurgeon and member of the SOE expert physician panel. “Some of my patients have taken this assessment, and the results are very accurate. I would recommend for anyone to take it, and based on the results discuss it with their personal physician.”

The assessment can be accessed at https://www.secondopinionexpert.com/covid19.

“We are pleased to leverage the power of our patented technology platform and medical expertise to help in the global fight against the spread of COVID-19,” said Steve Krause, President, SecondOpinionExpert, Inc. “Our hope that this fast, free and comprehensive risk assessment tool will help save lives. Our plan is to continue to work alongside public health organizations to provide effective solutions that benefit society.”

ASHA Offers Guidance for Maintaining Hearing Devices, Improving Communication

As American families shelter in place due to COVID-19, children with hearing loss may need additional help at home, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The association offers parents this guidance:

1.    Make sure your child is using their hearing aids and cochlear implants as much as possible. Hearing amplification should be turned on during waking hours, whether a child is engaged in educational or leisure activities. Keeping device(s) on a child’s ear(s) and in good working order gives that child the best access to daily communication, language, and learning. The more exposure to language input, the better: It takes children 20,000 hours of listening before their brains are ready to learn to read. Keeping hearing aids or cochlear implants turned on can help children develop other communication skills, too—including written communication. It also allows them to participate to their fullest extent in interactions at home and virtually.

2.    Practice good communication habits, and promote togetherness. Everyone in the family can engage in good communication habits, helping the child with hearing loss while also strengthening family bonds:

  •     Make sure you are in the same room before you start talking. This offers a child the best opportunity to hear your voice while also providing access to visual cues such as facial expressions and body language. Does your child have a phone? Send them a text to let them know you want to talk. You’ll capture their attention and protect your vocal cords!
  •     Speak one at a time (as much as possible) during meals/activities. If a child is too young to understand this concept, incorporate a talking stick—designating the holder of the stick as the only person who can talk. The use of the stick will make it easier to follow the conversation and also helps teach a key social skill of turn taking. Making a talking stick is also a great arts-and-crafts opportunity for young children at home (do a web search for numerous online examples).
  •     Turn on closed captioning. Watching Frozen for the 100th time? Even if your child knows every line of the movie by heart, practicing reading along can help them keep up with new dialogue when you finally switch movies or shows. Most streaming services offer the option for closed captions or subtitles.
  •     Set aside time for regular face-to-face activities. These could take the form of a board game or meal together. During this time, make sure all screens are down and eyes are up, so everyone can fully capture what is being communicated.

3.    Prioritize regular care, routine, and preparedness. Steps like the ones below can make maintaining and caring for your child’s hearing health from home for an uncertain period of time more manageable:

  •     Add a daily “listening check” to your morning routine. It is important to know if hearing devices are working properly. Otherwise, your child might not be benefiting from wearing them. A video and step-by-step guide on how to perform a listening check is available from the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management.
  •     Add hearing aid or cochlear implant batteries to your stay-at-home preparedness list. Make sure that your child has enough batteries for at least 3 months. Although you may not be able to see your child’s audiologist in person right now, they may have some suggestions via phone or email about where you can stock up on batteries. Check the size before ordering—not all hearing aid or cochlear implant batteries are the same.
  •     Keep a hearing journal. Pick a time each week to jot down notes about your child’s hearing (this doesn’t need to be in a formal journal—notes on your phone work, too). Document what has or hasn’t worked. For example: “Ben wore his hearing aids all week with no problem,” “Ben misunderstood some of the conversation during our family lunch and refused to wear his hearing aids for the rest of the day,” or “Ben threw his hearing aid in the bathtub. We used his dry aid kit and it seems to be working okay.” Take note of audiologist and other doctors’ appointments that may have been canceled during this time.
  •     Once you get the all-clear by your state, reschedule your child’s appointments. When you go to your next audiologist appointment, bring your journal. They will be eager to hear your account of how caring for your child’s hearing health has gone, where you think matters stand, and any questions or concerns that you may have.

If you have concerns about your child’s hearing but haven’t had a hearing evaluation, visit the ASHA ProFind tool to find an ASHA-certified audiologist in your area. Make an appointment once it is safe to go out again.

Award-Winning Author, Larry Fowler, Giving Away His Bestselling Book, Dare to Live Greatly, Comparing Navy SEAL Training to Christian Living While Fighting Covid-19

In today’s increasingly secular world, it’s becoming tougher to live a Christian life. In fact, in Dare to Live Greatly, L.C. (Larry) Fowler, a graduate of Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/S) Class 89, argues that to follow Christ today requires Navy SEAL-like toughness. No matter how dire the circumstances, a SEAL will never give up—nor should any Christian.

With the coronavirus sweeping the world this Easter Sunday, here are a few tips from the lens of Christian warrior:

(1)    You’re not in control so why worry? It’s a waste of time to worry about what you cannot control. Worry will not add one minute to your life and makes it impossible for you to be a light for others or fulfill your God-given purpose. Bottom line, don’t be a burden on others, or worse—a faith coward.

(2)    Listen wisely. Live wisely. God gave you science so do your due diligence. Practice safe distancing, wash your hands, and stay away from groups.

(3)    Be active and be Jesus. Find opportunities to serve a retired neighbor, someone who is ill and needs groceries. If avoiding physical contact, make calls to let others know you care. If we do not take action to love others, we’re nothing more than a “clanging cymbal.”

What a great time to think about our God-given purpose on Easter Sunday—how we can best serve and love others. With 90% of our thoughts about self, can you imagine how much less anxiety we’d have in America if we could reframe our self-focus to become others-focused?

Our BUD/S class 89 motto was “The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday.” Our class plaque with these inscribed words remains in the BUD/S compound in Coronado, CA, today. The advice couldn’t be timelier during COVID-19. Don’t become burdened with fear, anxieties, or worry but keep moving forward. Believe. Trust. And always thrive forward like a Navy SEAL fighting to survive training.

You can download Dare to Live Greatly free through Easter. This not just another SEAL book.

No other book juxtaposes Christian living to something as demanding as Hell Week, the Tijuana mud flats, or Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training in Coronado, California.

Last week the secular Nonfiction Authors Association awarded Dare to Live Greatly its highest award commenting, “(this book) wouldn’t normally be my choice of book, but it draws you in to see links between being a SEAL and a Christian. This is a powerful story that will resonate with many readers, whatever their religious beliefs.”

A Medal of Honor Gold Star family member who lost his brother in the Vietnam War sent this note to Fowler, “I am enclosing my brother Mike’s challenge coin to thank you for not only serving our country but for opening up to tell the world about your Christianity… You are truly a ‘breath of fresh air’ in our crazy society of today.”

Raised in Rossville, Georgia, Fowler gave up college to follow his dream of attending Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/S) training and become a famed member of the Navy Special Warfare community. The only problem was he didn’t know how to swim.

According to S. Rawding, SEAL, BUD/S Class 89 classmate, “I witnessed this man who would rather drown trying than give up his dream of becoming a SEAL. Larry became a shining example of never giving up on your dream.”

Fowler was selected by his peers at Navy basic training as their “Honor Man,” and was an invited guest at the White House. More importantly, he has trained with Christian personnel across the globe, including Pakistan, Indonesia, China, and other countries at all organizational levels.

Fowler now resides in Destin, Florida. He is a Lymphoma cancer survivor and he has learned to live each day to the max.

Download Dare to Live Greatly now through April 12, 2020 (Easter Sunday).

Susan Maluschka’s newly released “Nameless Women of The Bible” is a potent creation that sheds light on the rest of the key women of the Bible

News Image

“Nameless Women of The Bible”: an illuminating and relevant study that dives into the background of women who were not given enough recognition in the Bible but played an equally important role in the biblical history. “Nameless Women of The Bible” is the creation of published author Susan Maluschka, a member of the LCMS. Her studies are based on the teachings of the Lutheran Church. When she is not creating Bible studies, she enjoys spoiling her children and grandson, traveling, and writing a blog. She lives in Victoria, Texas, with her husband, Charlie.

Maluschka shares, “Eve, Sarah, Ruth, Mary—we are very familiar with these biblical women and we know their stories by heart, but what about the women we are not given names for? There are many women in the Bible that give us their stories, but we have no idea what their name is. Some were positive role models in showing us how to live Christian lives, and some were examples of what not to do. It doesn’t matter if their contribution takes up a paragraph or a single sentence; we can learn from these nameless women. This study will help you to put yourself in their shoes. These wives, daughters, and mothers each played a part in God’s plan for the world and have a story to tell. By going through each instance carefully, we might begin to see them in a different light and discover a lesson we didn’t even know was there.

“Everyone plays a part in God’s plan for this world, and it’s time these ladies received some recognition for their efforts. Nameless Women of the Bible is a twelve-part study that looks deeper into the stories of these women, from their family relationships to the impact their actions have on the community. Once again, their actions speak, and we have only to listen and learn.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Susan Maluschka’s new book is a brilliant manuscript that shares to the readers significant personalities who also played important roles in God’s plan. Here, everyone can take part in these women’s stories and see the wonder in their goodness and faith.

Reverend Terry Loomis’s newly released “Controversial Bible Topics” is a compelling novel that opens a discourse on controversial subjects in the Bible

News Image

“Controversial Bible Topics”: an important read on issues that revolve around the pages of the Bible from a different perspective. “Controversial Bible Topics” is the creation of published author Reverend Terry Loomis, a minister who was ordained into pastoral ministry back in 2004. From 2014 to present, God has brought him back to teaching and ministering to His people. God has also blessed him with an engineering career of 45 years.

Reverend Loomis shares, “Two friends of mine, Reverend Thurman Harris and Bishop Bill Dishman, inspired me to write this book. We would often talk of the differences in the theology of various churches on many topics.

“I tested some of these topics by the text in the Bible, looking to verify each viewpoint from their perspective. I tested these topics using the Bible verses in the way that they would apply them. By taking the Bible verses within their context, we can see if they are demonstrating support for their particular topical viewpoints. I have provided the Bible verses using the King James version. In some cases, I also provided commentaries on the Bible verses that may aid in their understanding.

“By writing this book, I realize that there will always be some people that will feel that their viewpoint is more correct in any case.

“The Bible, having been given to us by the Holy Spirit, is for two purposes: one to instruct us for spiritual growth, the second is how to seek and to save that which is lost leading them to salvation.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Reverend Terry Loomis’s new book brings the readers an interesting manuscript that makes aware the reality of how some are under the influence of false teachings. Hence, it carries a clearer understanding of the truths of the church.

R.K. Sparks’s newly released “The Armies of Gog” is a gripping novel that looks closer at one man’s wars in a world filled with mess and chaos

News Image

“The Armies of Gog”: a brilliant narrative that chronicles the adventure-mission of a Jewish-Palestinian spy in an ever-changing dysfunctional world that lacks of faith. “The Armies of Gog” is the creation of published author R.K. Sparks, a brilliant writer who creates exciting stories of fun, interest, and thrill.

Sparks shares, “Eli Grollenberg is a chameleon—a half-Jewish, half-Palestinian spy for the NSA. His ethnic flexibility, looks and build, fluency in nine languages, and technological genius makes him one of America’s greatest assets. Simply put, he can assume any one of twenty-three unique aliases, which include three women, and be dropped into nearly twenty countries virtually unnoticed.

“Following the election of Donald J. Trump in 2016, things became interesting around the world from an NSA perspective. The only thing more interesting than the brewing civil war in America was the coalition of countries assembling to come against Israel. While nothing new, this group was unique in that it included Russia and a sinister motive that could potentially change the world and fulfill hundreds of Bible prophecies.

“In a world of uncertainty and potential nuclear war, Eli delivers a message of hope from the front lines.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, R.K. Sparks’s new book is an interesting fiction that accounts the life of an NSA spy and the mess of a world he’s tasked to work onto. Eli reaches out to everyone with a wish to inspire them with hope.
