Prevent Blindness to Hold Sixteenth Annual “Eyes on Capitol Hill” Advocacy Event

Prevent Blindness to hold its sixteenth annual “Eyes on Capitol Hill” advocacy event.

“From its founding in 1908, Prevent Blindness has continued to be, at its core, a public health advocacy organization,” said Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness.

Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest non-profit eye health organization, will be holding its sixteenth annual “Eyes on Capitol Hill” advocacy event, held virtually this year, on Wed., Feb. 24 and Thurs., Feb. 25, 2021. The program brings together patients, caregivers, public health workers, and medical professionals with their elected officials to educate lawmakers and their staff on vision issues, including equitable access to quality eyecare, health disparities in the prevalence of vision disorders, and the importance of sight-saving research and surveillance.

The event also provides an important opportunity to reach out to newly elected members of Congress to introduce them to critical vision advocacy initiatives. As learned during the Coronavirus pandemic, many of the circumstances that surround vision loss and eye disease—such as age, presence of chronic disease, and health disparities—intersect with COVID-19 and its most serious consequences, underscoring the need for advocacy to ensure that public policy accounts for those who live with blinding eye diseases.

In addition to sharing their personal stories of the importance of healthy vision, this year’s Eyes on Capitol Hill advocates will ask elected officials to:

“From its founding in 1908, Prevent Blindness has continued to be, at its core, a public health advocacy organization,” said Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness. “By working to give those who are directly affected by vision issues the opportunity to educate our government representatives directly on the importance of eye health, the Eyes on Capitol Hill event continues to carry on that mission.”

Jeff Fiedler’s newly released “Intimately Acquainted” is a great source of inspiration that sheds light on the powerful grace of keeping a close relationship with Him

News Image

“Intimately Acquainted: A Story of Hope, Love, and Faith”: a rousing read that will help one realize that the relationship between man and God is crucial for one to know what path to take towards achieving their life’s purpose. “Intimately Acquainted: A Story of Hope, Love, and Faith” is the creation of published author Jeff Fiedler, an owner of The Drawing Board. He also works part-time for the 911 communications center. He enjoys spending time with friends and family and is passionate about mentoring high school and college-age students.

Fiedler shares, “Whether you are a young adolescent or an older-aged adult, you have experienced trials, tragedy, triumphs, and achievements of some type. As you experience the highs and lows of life, which may sometimes feel like a roller coaster, I want you to know, through those experiences, you have a God who wants you to be intimately acquainted with Him. By being obedient and trusting Him to guide your life, He will strategically lead you in the direction and path of which your life needs to go. As you become closer to Him, while intimately acquainted, the Lord will purposefully place people around you to be there while you experience those peaks and valleys. You have as much God right now in you as you’ll ever experience, but know He wants more of you and to build a relationship with you. As you read through this book, there are many examples of how a misfortune resulting in victory can build and grow your faith, to where ‘living by faith’ is the only way you’ll know how to live each day.

“In this book, I hope to encourage you and help you to persevere with your relationship with the Lord, family relationships, friendships, work environments, financial life, school, church, youth groups, careers, dreams, and goals. By the end of this read, I hope you realize you have a God that knows your heart better than you know yourself, and even through much adversity through this thing called ‘life,’ God has a divine appointment and a plan for you far more than you could ever imagine while you are becoming intimately acquainted with Him.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Jeff Fiedler’s new book is a brilliant account shared to bring motivation to readers in the hopes that they will keep a strong hold onto their faith in God, their personal relationships, and everything that makes up their life.

Ten Days, Ten Words” is a moving account that motivates the readers to dream

News Image

“My Truth: Ten Days, Ten Words”: a stirring narrative of the author’s encounter with Christ and how God changed his life. “My Truth: Ten Days, Ten Words” is the creation of published author Dwight Hairston Currence, a writer who loves the Lord and strives daily to inspire others to be confident in who they are.

Currence writes, “I always thought that dreams were for everybody else except me. I didn’t know why I always felt broken or sabotaged myself every chance I got. I became complacent being grounded. I now know it was always inside me. I was always taught that your appearance matters, but it doesn’t if you are hollow. You must begin the work from the inside out.

“Growing up in a dysfunctional environment taught me to keep secrets and accept things the way they are. My insides were toxic. There is a seed in everybody. I can see the people who water and fertilizer theirs: the teacher with the smile at work daily, the athletes smiling during interviews, the twenty-year employee still excited to go to work.

“I give you permission to heal, permission to live your best life, permission to dream. My Truth: Ten Days, Ten Words. Strap up, let’s go. I don’t have any more stress-filled days. Today, I’m living my dream, and it’s amazing.

“My Truth: Ten Days, Ten Words is my journey, and it provided me an opportunity to reflect on my life before and after Christ. Through this true, raw, and honest reflection, I was able to see the toxic life I had been living and, more importantly, how God had redefined who I was. It was always there, but I was unable to see it because of the toxic life I was living; in other words, I was “riding dirty,” from drinking alcohol to mask the pain, to being married three times…all in an effort to fill a life that was void of love and self-worth.

“Today, I am living my dream, and it is amazing! Every day, I wake up with gratitude in my heart. It is my desire that through this book, you will also learn to dream again and become confident in the path that God has set for your life. Ten Days, Ten Words, it will be an amazing journey. Strap up and let’s go!”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Dwight Hairston Currence’s new book is a compelling handbook designed to provide healing to the readers, allowing them to live the life they desire.

In this book, the author hopes to give readers a better understanding of how wonderful life can be when they simply love God and learn to embrace themselves.

Dura Software, a company skilled in acquiring, owning and operating “Hyper-Niche” software businesses, announced it has acquired Vertex Systems, a technology company that delivers easy-to-use software to organizations serving adults with disabilities. The transaction launches Dura Software into the growing healthcare field, while providing Vertex with the necessary support for continued growth and ongoing advancement.

Level Access, G3ict and IAAP launches 2021 State of Digital Accessibility Survey to benchmark worldwide efforts to create inclusive technology

Image of the Level Access State of Digital Accessibility Report cover.

While the crisis exposed gaps in accessibility, there were also great stories of organizations closing those gaps quickly. We are eager to see the results of this year’s survey to see if the stories we have heard are reflected in the data.”- Jonathan Avila, Chief Accessibility Officer, Level Access

Level Access, the global leader in digital accessibility, in collaboration with G3ict and IAAP, has launched the State of Digital Accessibility survey. This is the third year for the survey, which asks professionals in various roles to describe their organization’s commitment to creating inclusive technology, including websites, mobile apps, software, and hardware.

“The COVID-19 quarantine allowed people with disabilities to work from home, access more resources online, and communicate in more accessible ways,” said Jonathan Avila, Chief Accessibility Officer at Level Access. “While the crisis exposed gaps in accessibility, there were also great stories of organizations closing those gaps quickly. We are eager to see the results of this year’s survey to see if the stories we have heard are reflected in the data.”

“The State of Digital Accessibility Report provides the most comprehensive set of benchmarks for organizations implementing digital accessibility,” said Axel Leblois, President of G3ict. “Its 2021 edition will be of particular importance for all sectors of activity given the pressing imperative to ensure the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in ever expanding digital services and virtual environments.”

To thank the worldwide community for their participation in the survey, Level Access is donating $5000 to a disability-focused non-profit. The non-profit will be voted on by those who complete the survey. In addition, G3ict and IAAP are sponsoring five prizes at the individual level. Five email addresses will be chosen at random from those who complete the survey by January 31st. They will each receive either a $100 VISA gift card or a $200 donation to the disability-focused non-profit of their choice.

Key findings from the 2020 State of Digital Accessibility Report:

  • Nearly 68% of participants said that their organization feels compelled to be inclusive of people with disabilities.
  • Nearly 70% of organizations outsource at least one accessibility task.
  • While 94% agree that testing by people with disabilities is important, 56% of organizations are not doing it.
  • More than 35% of participants stated that it was challenging to hire people with experience in digital accessibility.
  • 55% of organizations have prioritized buying a product or solution because of its accessibility.
  • 60% of organizations reported that current litigation trends have motivated them to move faster to achieve accessibility compliance.

“We are grateful to the more than 1,000 professionals and IAAP members who participated in the State of Digital Accessibility survey last year,” said Christopher Lee, Managing Director of IAAP. “We look forward to even greater participation this year.”

ZP, Leading Technology Solutions Company for the Deaf, Relocates to Austin with Innovative DeafSpace Headquarters

Austin is one of our nation’s most deaf-friendly cities and a growing technology and business hub…we can think of no better home for our new headquarters.

ZVRS and Purple Communications, divisions of ZP Better Together, LLC (ZP), a leading provider of communication solutions for the deaf and hard of hearing community, announced today the relocation of its corporate headquarters to Austin, TX, from Rocklin, Calif. Effective January 28, 2021, ZP’s headquarters move will expand its workspace presence in dynamic and fast-growing northwest Austin and features an innovative DeafSpace design and architecture that puts the deaf community and the deaf experience front and center.

ZP’s move brings 150 of the communication solutions leader’s 2,800+ nationwide workforce to Austin’s Paloma Ridge campus with the goal of supporting and connecting with the city’s highly populated and growing deaf community. Partnering on the relocation are several Austin-based companies Sixthriver, NOVO Construction, and Lincoln Property Company; Dallas-based Stream Realty Partners and Colorado-based property owner Ascentris. ZP’s new headquarters is located at Paloma Ridge,13620 N FM 620, Austin, TX 78717.

“Austin is one of our nation’s most deaf-friendly cities and a growing technology and business hub,” said Sherri Turpin, ZP Chief Executive Officer. “We can think of no better home for our new headquarters and are very excited to strengthen our presence in Texas. This move will allow ZP to tap into a dynamic workforce, attract more deaf talent, accelerate our technology innovations and support an incredible community of people who share our passion and commitment to language and communication access.”

ZP has a nationwide workforce of sign language interpreters and ZP’s non-interpreter employee base is comprised of 72 percent deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Turpin’s top priority was to secure a new home that crystalized a deaf-friendly design and architectural philosophy known as DeafSpace. The move also puts ZP into a hub of technology talent to create advancements in video communication and build relationships with both the deaf and business communities.

DeafSpace, a registered trademark of Gallaudet University, was first codified in 2005 through a collaborative effort with the ASL and Deaf Studies Department, architect Hansel Bauman, and others at Gallaudet University, the world’s leading liberal arts university for deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind students. DeafSpace Guidelines feature a catalogue of more than 150 distinct DeafSpace architectural design elements that address the five major touch points between deaf experiences and the built environment: space and proximity, sensory reach, mobility and proximity, light and color, and finally acoustics. Common to all of these categories are the ideas of community building, visual language, and the promotion of personal safety and well-being.

“DeafSpace and other human-centric design principles are crucial to designing spaces that are not only intuitive and inclusive for deaf people, but also benefit everyone,” said Roberta J. Cordano, President of Gallaudet University. “DeafSpace principles should be prioritized in construction to make our built environment accessible for all. I applaud ZP’s proactive efforts to incorporate DeafSpace principles in the design of their new headquarters and I look forward to viewing the new space in the future.”

“From the very start, our new home was created specifically for our Deaf employees and community and with the collaboration and support of our deaf executives,” added Turpin. “The foundation of our new headquarters is centered on DeafSpace guidelines, ensuring that we created an environment that considers our deaf employees first and that would affirm the experience and culture of our deaf and hard of hearing workforce.”

To ensure safety for all, ZP plans to host an open house after the pandemic restrictions have been lifted.
