Nan Heathers’s newly released “Through Dark Clouds Shines Holy Light!” holds a fascinating venture across a lifetime of heartwarming lessons

News Image

“Through Dark Clouds Shines Holy Light!”: a captivating novel that sees through the life of one person as she discovers a wonderful journey in a God-centered path. “Through Dark Clouds Shines Holy Light!” is the creation of published author Nan Heathers, a mother of four, two boys and two girls, and also a grandmother of four and great grandmother of two. Still residing in the Pacific Northwest, she has attended Bethany Pentecostal Church for fifty-three consecutive years.

Heathers shares, “From humid, bleak cottonfields of Mississippi in the late 1930s, to the Olympic Mountains with the Pacific Ocean crashing against the shores, this story spans over seven decades in the incredible life of one twin. Nan Heathers and her identical twin, Ann, were born in Iuka, Mississippi in 1939. The last two in a large family born of love, from caring, hardworking parents. In this incredible memoir, Nan brings unusual insights into pieces of American history that come alive. She tells of one of the first immigrants (her great-great-great grandfather, William Callicutt) who arrived on the shores of the New World in 1608, aboard Captain John Smith’s ship. Together they helped build Jamestown, the first settlement in the new world.

“After Nan taps our memory of history, she takes us on a journey from the old family farm in the deep south, to her life as a druggie and ‘go-go dancer,’ to life as a born-again Christian! Nan weaves a tale that is brutally honest, at times downright funny, and definitely heartwarming. This book should be read by everyone. Especially those who think they are not good enough to join the King’s army. He lives within our hearts so that you can!”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Nan Heathers’s new book is an inspiring biography for every reader to witness how Christ lives in their hearts and guides them wherever they may find themselves in life.

“A Witness for Christ: Finding a Faith and Hope to Last a Lifetime” is a book that can answer questions that many people have long since struggled with. Its author Marie Peterson , is a native of New Jersey and first time seventy-five year old author with a tenacious spirit.

Peterson shares, “The world is filled with questions. As individuals, I guess our interests would eventually lead us to ask our own personal ones. Some questions can be answered with one word, while others can be answered in a few sentences, but what if the questions you have are complex? These answers may require time, research, and perseverance at the very least.

“A Witness for Christ is an autobiographical spiritual book that will take you on a journey of ups and downs; teaching you along the way; and proving over and over again God’s existence, love, forgiveness, and mercy. Hopefully, it will answer questions you have long since been searching for. It was written for all ages, gender, color, creed, and cultures—in other words, for everyone.

“This road will take you on a life lived with God, as well as one without Him, and all its consequences. I continuously use Bible passages relating to and proving the truth of my words and experiences. My book is one that each of us can relate to, which, in turn, gives credence to its truth and value. At the end of the book, you will be asked to question yourself and to make a choice—one that can change your life forever.”

Wayne Seniors Get FREE Home Services with MI Choice Waiver

Freedom and independence matter. The MI Choice Waiver is an incredible alternative for seniors during the times in which we currently live

The Senior Alliance (TSA) in Wayne County is promoting a little-known state program that provides free meals, medical and daily needs services to Michigan’s aging adults within their own homes.

The MI Choice Waiver ensures that eligible adults (including disabled adults) receive Medicaid-covered services — such as those provided by nursing homes — at their home, a licensed facility or assisted living community.

Currently there is no wait list at TSA to take advantage of the program, and those interested may apply by visiting https://thesenioralliance.org/waiver/ or by calling (800) 815-1112.

“Adults historically had no other option than nursing homes or relying on loved ones as they aged,” TSA CEO Tamera Kiger says. “Freedom and independence matter. The MI Choice Waiver is an incredible alternative for the times in which we currently live.”

Funded through the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, services can include meals, medication management, snow and lawn care maintenance, transportation, counseling and respite care.

Author Jim Daniel answers common questions about the end times in A Contemporary Look at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ ($16.99, paperback, 9781545601150; $8.99, e-book, 9781545601167).

While Christians look ahead to Christ’s return to earth, there is still much speculation regarding many of the future events described in the Bible. Daniel shows readers what to expect regarding topics such as the rapture, the mark of the beast and the eternal destination of both believers and non-believers.

“People with questions like ‘When will Christ return?’ ‘When will the end times begin?’ and ‘What are signs of the tribulation?’ will find this book to be a helpful survey of end times theology written with authority and expertise,” said Daniel.

Making Home Safer: Advice for Aging Adults

News Image

While many consider living at home to be the best option for themselves or their loved one amid the pandemic, there are still obstacles that aging adults may face such as potential fall risks or fire hazards.

Home has always been a haven. In fact, before the pandemic, 94% of senior homeowners indicated an overwhelming desire to age in the comfort of their own homes. Additionally, the concerns around COVID-19 continue to accelerate this trend, as more people than ever reconsidered long-term care facilities in favor of the place they feel safest.

While many consider living at home to be the best option for themselves or their loved one amid the pandemic, there are still obstacles that aging adults may face such as potential fall risks or fire hazards. According to research conducted for Home Instead, 65% of seniors’ homes have at least one potential safety issue, as reported by their adult children. Many of these can be avoided with minor adjustments, like installing adequate lighting or removing long electrical cords obstructing walkways.

“Caregivers can work with older adults to identify and eliminate potential risks that they may not even understand exist,” said Lakelyn Hogan, Ph.D., gerontologist and caregiver advocate at Home Instead. “These improvements can range from a quick fix to a small renovation, but investing the time to make these updates can help everyone feel more confident in living at home longer.”

Hogan encourages older adults and their families to be mindful of potential hazards and create a plan to help ensure home remains a safer place to be. If unsure where to start, consider the following spaces, beginning with the most frequently used rooms:

  • The bedroom. It’s important that beds are at a safe level for older adults to avoid fall risks. Bed height is too low if a loved one’s knees are above their hips when sitting on the bed. Consider placing bed risers under the bed legs to add height. Conversely, a bed’s level is too high if older adults’ legs are not touching the floor while they sit on the edge of the bed. You can remove the bed frame or use a lower profile mattress to lower the bed’s height.
  • The bathroom. Adding grab bars near showers, bathtubs and toilets is a simple way to prevent falls and other accidents. Browse online or at a medical supply store for various options to reduce any accessibility risks. Installing a toilet seat riser can also aid in getting on and off the commode easier.
  • The living room. Regulating body temperature can be more difficult for aging adults. Ensure open spaces are properly heated during colder temperatures and check thermostats throughout the home. Have a caregiver or professional install lock-in switches on thermostats to control the temperature and help prevent furnace fires. Additional solutions include heat-control window film, thermal curtains or solar shades.
  • The kitchen. It’s important that the kitchen has proper lighting, especially when older adults are cooking or baking. Light bulb wattage should be increased to allowable levels. Many options exist for under-counter lighting, such as battery-operated pucks. An electrician can help with questions about under-counter or overhead lighting. Creating easy access to frequently used items is also vital to avoid heavy lifting or the use of step stools. Consider storing heavy items on the counter or hanging pots and pans on the wall.
  • The dining room. After a few years, it’s important to check that furniture is still sturdy and safe. Check to see if chairs have wobbly arms or legs and are the proper height for older loved ones at the table. If repairs are needed, locate a furniture repair service representative, or consider upgrading to a new set.
  • The basement. Regularly traveling up and down stairs, especially if steep, can introduce dangerous fall risks. To avoid this, consider reducing the need to visit the basement so often by moving laundry, storage or other important items to the main floor.

By prioritizing safety and being proactive about making these adjustments, older adults will be able to remain independent and protected at home long into the future.

Paralyzed Veterans of America releases informational videos that empower veterans with disabilities to seek higher education

News Image

The videos, developed in partnership with Student Veterans of America and with financial support from Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP), were filmed, produced, and hosted by PsychArmor Institute.

The videos focus on the value of attending higher education for significantly or catastrophically injured or ill veterans. They also highlight the resources and assistance provided by accessibility offices at higher education institutions. The videos can be found at https://bit.ly/3eLKq9i.

“One of the proudest days of my life was when I rolled across the stage at the University of Alabama and received my college degree, and I believe every veteran – regardless of injury or illness – deserves to feel that sense of accomplishment,” said Shaun Castle, PVA Deputy Executive Director. “Navigating the education system is hard but thanks to our partners and supporters, vital tools like these, and our Veterans Career Program, veterans are better equipped and set up for success.”

“Wounded Warrior Project is proud to join with Paralyzed Veterans of America, Student Veterans of America, and PsychArmor Institute to support post-9/11 veterans on their educational journeys and through their transitions from the military,” said Ashley Bunce, WWP director of community partnerships and investments. “These videos are vital tools that will empower veterans to thrive in higher education as they navigate available care and resources.”

The video rollout is part of a broader focus on continuous learning and educational opportunities led by PVA’s Veteran Career Program, which was launched in 2007 to ensure PVA members, veterans with catastrophic or significant disabilities, their spouses and caregivers, have access to meaningful employment, educational and volunteer opportunities. The program concentrates on the unique needs of clients and provides support ranging from in-depth vocational rehabilitation to developing a resume, practicing interview skills, or choosing a major. Veterans Career Program staff work with any veteran who needs support but has a unique focus on those with barriers to employment or careers.

Studies have found that there are significant benefits for individuals who are engaged in the labor force, including improved quality of life, enhanced self-confidence, expanded social network, a sense of community, and increased income. For many veterans with significant or catastrophic disabilities, additional training or education may be the pathway toward future employment. Both videos highlight benefits and resources available to veterans, and act as vital tools to empower them as they tackle the world of higher education.

Over the coming weeks, PVA’s Veterans Career Program will host a series on education and training opportunities through its virtual engagement platform, Veterans Career Live. The series will not only feature the two higher education videos but also interactive sessions on opportunities with community colleges, micro-learning, online education, and disability resources and accommodations. More information on the Veterans Career Program and Veterans Career Live can be found at PVA.org/VeteransCareerProgram.

Millicent Robinson’s newly released “Issues In The Tissues” is a heartwarming testimony of God’s deliverance in a life challenged by endless troubles

News Image

“Issues In The Tissues: Your Struggles Will Not Defeat Your Destiny”: an inspiring tome that instills in the minds of many how faith is a strong key in prevailing against challenges. “Issues In The Tissues: Your Struggles Will Not Defeat Your Destiny” is the creation of published author Millicent Robinson, a writer who has served as the director of the Gracious Women of God Ministry. She is also the author of five other books.

Robinson shares, “Give not fear to your pain, nor let financial complexities prevent success.

“You may have health issues that may be challenging but be proud of who you are and keep your focus. You are unstoppable; this is your season and there is no reason to doubt.

“The woman with the issue of blood only ‘touched’ the hem of Jesus’s garment and immediately she was healed.

“Never belittle the issues you face in your tissues. Deem it as a purpose for God to invest in you. Great investment does not come overnight, but through processes. Job said, ‘Though he slays me yet will I trust him’ (Job 13:15). If that wasn’t enough Job questioned ‘If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait until my change comes’ (Job 14:14).

“Holding back your dreams is not an option, and doubting will only set you back. Believe in yourself, be positive about life, and you have potential. Don’t be weighed down by fear, anxiety, and unforgiveness. Though caused by traumatic events, they are only issues.

“The term ‘issues in the tissues’ refers to the state of our emotional being stored in our bodies. Our heart is the center of our emotions. We deal with personality, mood, temperament, interconnectedness, motivation, disposition, experience, and illness. These are issues that when locked in the tissue they will suppress your emotions. The fact is, you need to release your tensions, get past your past because failure to do so will have your past holding you hostage. Your yesterday is past and will speak for itself; live in your today as your tomorrow isn’t promised.

“Built up issues are dangerous to the breaking down of cells within the body, causing physical barriers that will affect the exporting and receiving of messages from the mind, communication. When the mind is released, you also release the cluster of confusions that cause heaviness in the head, which often feels more like an eruption is about to take place at any time. Letting go of strongholds can be very difficult but rewarding. At the end of the day, with the release of the mind, you are no longer experiencing chaotic health issues but rather are in your right frame of mind.

“I am sincerely confident that there is life beyond your circumstances. It’s not about money, or riches, for that too will pass. It’s not about education, careers, success, or lifestyle that brings out that great significance in you, but it is about centering your mind on your Creator, the great master, controller of your holistic body. By him, your issues and tissues were formed and molded.

“But thou art he that took me out of my mother’s womb; thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breast. I was cast upon thee from the womb: Thou are my God from my mother’s belly. -Psalm 22:9-10 (KJV)

“Thine hands has made and fashioned me together round about; yet Thou do destroy me. Remember, I beseech thee, that thou have made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again. Has thou not poured me out as milk and curdled me like cheese. Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh and has fenced me with bones and sinews. Thou hast granted me life and favor, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit. -Job 10:8-12”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Millicent Robinson’s new book is a motivating memoir and guide from a life that holds so much faith after the struggles she has suffered mentally, physically, and emotionally.
