Mr. and Miss FHU Named by Freed-Hardeman University’s Students, Faculty

Each year it is a privilege to celebrate the best of our student body. This time-honored tradition dating back to 1940 is a cherished part of Freed-Hardeman’s history.

Mr. and Miss Freed-Hardeman University 2021 were celebrated Friday, April 23, during a special chapel presentation. Elected by the students, faculty and staff, the winners were Connor Creasy, a secondary education and history major from Milan, Tennessee, and Wisenie Jadis, a nursing major from Davenport, Florida.

FHU President David R. Shannon presented the winning students and Dr. Billy Smith, professor of Bible, was the master of ceremonies.

In addition to playing baseball for the FHU Lions, Creasy has been a member of Phi Kappa Alpha Social Club and the Student Athlete Advisory Council. “I appreciate how intentional the faculty and staff are in helping their students be successful not only in the classroom, but in life,” he said. After graduation, Creasy doesn’t plan to leave FHU. Instead, he will begin a master’s degree and continue his baseball career. He is the son of Linda and Jeff Creasy.

Jadis has been very active in her social club, Xi Chi Delta. She has held several leadership positions including vice president, girls’ president, treasurer and sophomore representative. She said, “I appreciate the community, family and home Freed-Hardeman has become for me.” Jadis plans to spend the summer as a youth intern in Knoxville and then return to Florida to begin her nursing career. Her parents are Claire and Miguel Jadis.

“Each year it is a privilege to celebrate the best of our student body. This time-honored tradition dating back to 1940 is a cherished part of Freed-Hardeman’s history,” Chris Ramey, director of alumni engagement, said.

Other finalists for Miss FHU were Emaleigh Board, an accounting major from Elizabethtown, Kentucky; Cassidy Shrader, a communication major with an emphasis in public relations from Columbia, Tennessee; and Hannah Young, a financial planning major from Rosedale, New York.

Additional contenders for Mr. FHU were Jesse Bates, a Bible major from Cookeville, Tennessee; Sam McGreevy, a finance major from Mount Juliet, Tennessee; and Dillan Todd, a youth and family ministry major from Chapel Hill, Tennessee.

Melwood Endorses Critical Legislation to End the Subminimum Wage for People with Disabilities

“For people with disabilities, this is more than a financial issue, it’s a civil rights one,” said Melwood President & CEO, Larysa Kautz.

Melwood is proud to support the Transformation to Competitive Employment Act (H.R. 2373) introduced by Representatives Bobby Scott and Cathy McMorris Rodgers. The bill will finally end an 83-year-old discriminatory practice allowing employers to pay people with disabilities as little as $2.15 per hour while subjecting them to stressful and demoralizing time trials.

Melwood has been a champion for the elimination of the subminimum wage for many years and successfully advocated banning the practice in the State of Maryland. “For people with disabilities, this is more than a financial issue, it’s a civil rights one,” said Melwood President & CEO, Larysa Kautz. “On behalf of Melwood and our more than 1,600 employees across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., including nearly 1,000 employees with disabilities, I would like to express our support for this critical legislation.”

The existing subminimum wage law comes from Section 14(c) of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and was written at a time when lawmakers thought that people with disabilities couldn’t – or shouldn’t – work like any other employee. Today, people with all types of disabilities have proven that they have the same abilities, desires, and motivations to work and earn a paycheck as the rest of our community. “We just have to break down the barriers and ceilings that have been in place for a very long time,” said Kautz.

Melwood believes the continued practice of paying people with disabilities lower than minimum wage reinforces the discriminatory premise that a person with a disability is not capable of working and adding the same level of value to a job as a person without a disability. It is this bigotry of low expectations that foreshadows, and often directly causes, a life of poverty, segregation, and dependence on public support for the people that Melwood serves. Because of the continuation of this policy, an estimated 400,000 people with disabilities are currently treated as though the value of one hour of their time is worth less than the minimum value that we, as a society, have deemed for an hour of work for every other citizen.

Our collective goal should be to ensure that all people, regardless of race, gender, creed, religion, sexual orientation, or disability, have the same opportunities to live lives of their choosing in an inclusive community and workforce.

This legislation represents a thoughtful approach to ending the outdated and unfair practice of paying subminimum wages to workers with disabilities by not only phasing out Section 14(c), but also including funding to help states and providers transform business models to support individuals with disabilities while transitioning to competitive integrated employment.

Melwood thanks Representatives Bobby Scott and McMorris Rodgers for their leadership on this important issue of equity and inclusion.

About Melwood

Melwood is one of the largest employers of people with disabilities in the country, employing more than 1,600 workers – nearly 1,000 of whom have a disability– on over 60 competitive and integrated AbilityOne sites in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Melwood offers job placement, job training, life skills for independence, and support services to more than 2,500 people each year in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Melwood also has an inclusive summer camp program for children and provides support services to veterans and active-duty military members who have experienced service-related trauma or injury. The Journey Continues” is an autobiography about emerging from a broken beginning to being elevated through faith

News Image

“From Pain to Purpose: The Journey Continues”: a woman’s testimony that illuminates the Lord’s reason for allowing hardships in life. In this book, Roberts establishes that pain exists so one can metamorphose into a person of purpose. “From Pain to Purpose: The Journey Continues” is the creation of published author Ren Roberts, a member of Life Worship Center Church of God. She holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Nyack College, where she also pursued her master’s degree.

Roberts shares, “We are all created with and for a purpose. Pain comes not to kill us but to make us stronger. From Pain to Purpose tells us about the journey of a little girl into adulthood—the hurdles she crossed over to step into her purpose. Diamonds have to go through pressure to come out as beautiful as they do. Olives have to be crushed for the oil to flow. In the same way, Ren Roberts went through some moments that seemed unbearable; but God has allowed her to come out victorious, and the journey continues.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Ren Roberts’s new book is a courageous retelling that accounts how faith allows one to find growth after the suffering.

The author hopes to bring inspiration and illumination to many readers.

Author Antonio Restituyo’s newly released “In The Midst Of The Waves” is a poignant and inspirational memoir about the power of faith

News Image

“In The Midst Of The Waves”: a moving and captivating memoir about the power of faith and God’s unwavering care for all those who seek Him in times of need. “In The Midst Of The Waves” is the creation of published author, Antonio Restituyo, a pastor appointed by the Ministry Start Church who now serves at the church Place of Prayer and as a biblical teacher at the Biblical Institute at New Dimension in Christ.

Restituyo writes: “This book is a reflection of what my life was, but perhaps, it is the reflection of what your life is. When you read it, you will observe that my wrong decisions and my false thoughts were not the reality of the dreams that I always had; that’s why I found myself immersed in the middle of the waves, dark and strong waves that dragged me deeper and deeper, but thank God, He did not let me drown; He was always by my side, but I did not see Him. When I was about to die, He took me out in the middle of the waves and covered me with his light and with his love; you can also get out of the waves you are in today, look for Him, he is around you. Seek Him so that you can also testify to others, that God took me out, that God brought you out of the midst of the waves.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Antonio Restituyo’s new book is a moving and thought-provoking memoir that explores the healing, consoling, and transformational capacity bestowed upon those who choose to invest their faith in God and walk His path as ardent believers in His plan.

Told with touching honesty and startling insight into the nuances of the human soul, Restituyo’s book is one sure to resonate with readers of all backgrounds and, most importantly, provide a source of inspiration and encouragement to all those who have ever struggled to navigate life’s often tempestuous waters.

Brittany J. Shears’s newly released “David and Jonathan” is an inspiring story of friendship based on the book of Samuel in the Old Testament

News Image

“David and Jonathan”: a powerful read that follows the famous Biblical figure David and his best friend, not Goliath, but Jonathan. In this tale, David and Jonathan’s journey demonstrates that God will always send one someone to accompany them in their life battles. “David and Jonathan” is the creation of published author Brittany J. Shears, a new novelist with a fresh writing style. She’s currently a master’s divinity student and apprentices as chaplain in a hospital. She also has a personal blog where she can thoroughly express her thoughts.

Shears shares, “Meet Jonathan, the oldest of King Saul’s sons and crown prince to the Israeli throne. Having been groomed on the battlefield, Jonathan’s greatest allegiance is, first, to the God who has continuously defended him, and secondly, to the nation that his family has been charged to lead and defend. Unfortunately Jonathan’s adversaries are not quarantined to the battlefield. How is Jonathan supposed to defend Israel from both their advancing enemies and their own king—his own father? Overridden by fear and greed, King Saul’s sanity is slipping, the prophet Samuel is at a loss, and God is on the move.

“Meet David, the youngest of eight sons and esteemed family shepherd. Having been groomed for a life in the sheep field, David’s deepest devotions are to, first, the God who protects him, and secondly, to the flock he is charged with protecting. Unfortunately David’s role as the family shepherd marks him as a sort of outcast within his own household. His exclusion from family gatherings largely goes unnoticed and perhaps is largely hoped for by some. Enter Samuel, a divine anointing and the now-shepherd will-be-king David. But how will a shepherd take the throne? Easy, he won’t. It will be given to him. Of course, after he’s called into Saul’s service, the trick will be keeping David alive in the middle of harm’s way. Thankfully God has made the preparations. The defeat of two giants. The rejection of two fathers. The faith of two best friends. And the heroic host of much needed back up.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Brittany J. Shears’s new book is a beautiful read that gives the spotlight to David’s overlooked friendship with Israeli’s prince Jonathan. This moving story is sure to encourage and inspire others.

From Almost Impossible to Hopeful” is a deeply personal memoir sharing the profound impact of faith in her life

News Image

Everetta Harper, a Bronx, New York native who has served in ministry since 1974 and now resides in New Jersey, where she has been employed by the East Orange School District as a pre-kindergarten teacher for the past sixteen years, has completed her new book “F.A.I.T.H.: From Almost Impossible to Hopeful”: a graceful reflection on the daunting challenges she has faced and overcome with the help of her deeply comforting spirituality and faith.

“F.A.I.T.H.: From Almost Impossible to Hopeful is a memoir of the author. The main thought of the book is to have faith and trust in God in every impossible situation. It shows how a person, no matter the age, can truly trust and depend on God. Trust is what makes us go through an impossible situation, however big or small, and on to a hopeful situation. Circumstances come and go, and nine out of ten times, we dislike being in those cases, but the voice of God, the prophecy, is a very important atlas in a season in our life. As we listen to God via his servants, reading His Word, prophecy, and answered prayers, our level of understanding of and faith in God grow. God loves us; He is all about love and he does care for his children. Remember that the Lord leads our life and guides our steps. Dealing with life situations can and will leave us feeling like things are just impossible to change, but by trusting in Him, we begin to understand we can go from the impossible and that things are looking up and getting better. Things are beginning to be hopeful, and it’s all because we have put our life in His hands and trust in Him. We can go from impossible to hopeful; we only have to have faith in God!

Published by Page Publishing, Everetta Harper’s engrossing book is an excellent choice for avid Christian readers.

Readers who wish to experience this engaging work can purchase “F.A.I.T.H.: From Almost Impossible to Hopeful” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.
