National Braille Press Produces 35,000 Large Print and Braille Menus For Starbucks Stores

Braille and Large Print Starbuck Menus

“We commend Starbucks for its strong commitment to accessibility. These beautiful braille and large print menus will be in every Starbucks location in the United States and Canada,” said Brian Mac Donald, President of NBP.

National Braille Press (NBP), based in Boston, MA, produced 35,000 braille and large print menus for all Starbucks company-operated and licensed store locations in the U.S. and Canada as part of the company’s efforts to create a more accessible experience for blind and low-vision customers. The U.S. menus are printed in English and the Canadian menus are available in both French and English based on region.

Starbucks first began offering braille and large print menus in 2012. The updated menus were commissioned this year as part of the company’s ongoing work to improve and enhance the accessibility of physical and digital experiences for Starbucks partners (employees) and customers through inclusive design. The new braille and large print menus now feature an expanded assortment of Starbucks core food and beverage items so that low vision and blind customers can have access to a wider variety of Starbucks offerings. As part of Starbucks inclusive design process to co-create solutions with the disability community, the company also integrated feedback and input on the redesigned menus from National Braille Press and Starbucks customers.

Produced on a durable material called PPG TESLIN®, a synthetic stock that is made of plastic but still holds ink like paper means that these menus can be wiped down with sanitizer between customers without the ink running or the quality of the braille being compromised.

“We commend Starbucks for its strong commitment to accessibility. These beautiful braille and large print menus will be in every Starbucks location in the United States and Canada,” said Brian Mac Donald, President of NBP. “And we are excited that millions of blind and low vision people in North America will have independent access to read these menus.”

“We want to provide an accessible and inclusive experience for every Starbucks customer,” said Sevana Massih, Inclusion and Diversity manager of accessibility. “Part of that work is ensuring we are bringing in the disability community to get their feedback on tools and resources like menus and understand what we can improve to enhance their experience. We’re proud of working with National Braille Press and collaborating with our blind and low vision customers to provide access to all of the great offerings we have at Starbucks.”

About National Braille Press

National Braille Press is a non-profit braille publisher and producer of braille products. NBP creates products and programs to support braille literacy in the blind community and to provide access to information that empowers blind people to actively engage in work, family, and community. St. Francis College Announces New Campus in the Heart of Brooklyn

St. Francis College today announced its plan to move to a newly designed and fully customized campus in downtown Brooklyn.

St. Francis College’s relocation to The Wheeler building at 181 Livingston St. is the foundation of the 162-year-old private Franciscan institution’s transformative new initiative, SFC Forward, which it undertook in early 2021. The new campus will open its doors to students in September 2022.

“We are excited about SFC Forward and our relocation,” said Denis J. Salamone ’75, Chair of the St. Francis College Board of Trustees. “This initiative will make us more competitive and ensure future generations of Terriers receive life-changing academic and student experiences affording them increased social mobility.”

Along with the move, St. Francis College is introducing a new slate of academic programs, specifically in disciplines that springboard students into jobs in growing career fields, and is expanding opportunities for remote and online learning. SFC Forward also deepens the College’s commitment to champion a diverse and inclusive community throughout its curricula, programming, hiring and more.

“For more than 160 years, St. Francis College has demonstrated a commitment to providing an unmatched private education in the heart of New York City,” said Miguel Martinez-Saenz, Ph.D., President of St. Francis College. “This is a historic moment to completely re-envision our campus and meet the needs of our community, and we are thrilled to continue offering a first-rate, affordable education in a modern, flexible and welcoming learning space.”

MODERN FACILITIES CUSTOMIZED FOR COLLABORATION AND EXCELLENCE

St. Francis College is customizing a new campus in The Wheeler, inspired by community engagement and innovative design that will meet the needs of its changing student body.

The College, which previously grew from a small campus on Butler Street to a series of interconnected buildings on Remsen Street, welcomed more than 2,700 students in fall 2020, including its largest first-year class ever. It anticipates more than 3,500 enrolled students by 2026.

The contemporary facilities in The Wheeler were designed with input from faculty, staff, students and alumni to prioritize collaboration and community. They feature:

  • A dedicated, marked entrance on Livingston Street and lobby welcoming students and faculty to St. Francis College
  • Flexible labs and classrooms with built-in technology that accommodate a range of teaching styles and class structures
  • A 300-seat auditorium
  • A 260-seat cafeteria with servery and kitchen
  • A 32-seat tiered screening room
  • A 6,600-square-foot library with study and research spaces
  • A private outdoor terrace and access to a roof deck with views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Lower Manhattan and New York Harbor
  • Two art gallery spaces
  • Gathering spaces for students to work together, study and relax

St. Francis College’s new campus will occupy about 255,000 square feet across the fifth, sixth and seventh floors at 181 Livingston St. and will include more than 2,600 square feet of programmable outdoor space.

The Wheeler is a recently completed 10-story tower above the landmark art deco Macy’s department store and located in one of New York City’s densest subway service areas, with 12 subway lines within a five-minute walk.

St. Francis College’s athletics program—with its 21 Division I teams—will continue without interruption and are a part of SFC Forward’s vision. While the new campus does not include a gym or pool on site, the College is developing partnerships with nearby institutions to share indoor spaces for practice sessions and competitions. St. Francis College will continue to use various off-site playing fields and other spaces for its outdoor sports.

NEW ACADEMIC STRUCTURE OFFERING FLEXIBILITY, NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN EMERGING FIELDS

The campus move complements the recent work to strengthen and expand St. Francis College’s educational programming that anticipates the 21st-century global job market.

“Our students deserve nothing less than an education that meets the demands of the 21st-century economy,” said Jennifer Lancaster, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean. “SFC Forward ensures that we are immersing our students in global perspectives and learning experiences, expanding into emerging fields, and reinforcing students as critical thinkers, leaders and lifelong learners.”

Under SFC Forward, the College is offering four new master of science degrees—in exercise & sport science, special education, sports management and public health—and will introduce new undergraduate programs offering global perspectives in disciplines that prepare students for burgeoning in-demand career fields.

Flexibility for students is also key to the College’s forward-thinking approach to its academics. St. Francis College is expanding opportunities for students to learn remotely, relying on the latest technology and online instruction techniques available to deliver an expanding roster of online classes and co-curricular events.

The new campus incorporates innovative technology into its facilities, and SFC’s Online Faculty Training Certification and newly launched Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (the CAFE) ensure faculty members master best practices to develop engaging course content and promote student and instructor interaction, in both online and face-to-face instruction.

AFFIRMING FRANCISCAN VALUES THAT DEEPEN SFC’S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSIVITY

In keeping with the College’s foundational values, SFC Forward strives to be a beacon for all that lives up to its commitment of diversity, equity and inclusion.

“We are incredibly proud that the St. Francis College community increasingly reflects the rich diversity of this city and of our world,” said Monique Moore Pryor, Chief Engagement and External Affairs Officer. “Through an academic curriculum attuned to diverse voices, recruitment and retention of the very best employees of different backgrounds, and ongoing programming that promotes open dialogue, the College will continue to champion and grow our inclusivity with intent and thoughtfulness.”

In addition to its new academic program’s increased flexibility that acknowledges and adapts to nontraditional students, St. Francis College has increased its investment in initiatives that prepare students from historically underrepresented populations to support their social mobility.

Self-identified Black and Hispanic students continue to make up the majority of St. Francis College’s student body. In 2020, 24 percent of the student population identified as Black, and 28 percent as Hispanic. Ten percent of the student body consists of international students, with enrollees coming from Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Serbia, Albania, Spain and more than 70 other countries.

With a renewed focus on recruiting and supporting our increasingly diverse staff and faculty, the College is also currently developing a new strategic plan with leadership from both its Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer and its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Steering Committee.

SFC FORWARD AND THE COLLEGE’S NEW CAMPUS IS CELEBRATED BY COLLEGE, COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS LEADERS AND ELECTED OFFICIALS:

SFC’s new campus at The Wheeler will position them for continued success for generations to come.”

Author Shares His Life-Changing Experience Facing Both God and Satan in New Thought-Provoking Book

News Image

“Recently, God directed me to go ahead and write about the encounter and to present answers to logical challenges along with the story presentation.”

In “I Met God and Also Satan: The Out-of-Body Experience That Dramatically Changed My Life” by Glenn Walling, the author examines how he and his college roommate, utilizing the scientific method, tested world-renowned philosopher René Descartes’ theory “I think, therefore I am.” While testing this theory back in his dorm room in southern California, Walling had a life-changing experience he could never have dreamed possible. In “I Met God and Also Satan,” Walling shares the details of this other worldly experience, a surprising venture outside of the boundaries of the physical universe.

Throughout the text, readers will learn about Walling’s extraordinary encounter and how he faced the most powerful, unearthly principalities, meeting not only God, but Satan as well. Walling presents his story to an atheist professor as they discuss and deliberate the logistics and arguments surrounding what happened and how Walling did not choose to return to the physical world but was sent back.

“I kept the story of this encounter with God and Satan to myself for decades as I was concerned with credibility,” said Walling. “Recently, God directed me to go ahead and write about the encounter and to present answers to logical challenges along with the story presentation.”

In “I Met God and Also Satan,” Walling presents a firsthand testimony of God’s existence while using logic to reach a skeptical audience. This thought-provoking book challenges readers to think outside their comfort zone as they read about this factual event in the author’s life.

Author Bill Glenn’s newly released “Growing Toward God” is a heartfelt devotional meant to inspire readers to pursue a deeper faith

News Image

“Growing Toward God”: a stimulating discussion of Christianity. “Growing Toward God” is the creation of published author Bill Glenn, a dedicated writer, Christian, and loving father.

Glenn shares, “Just as wisdom doesn’t necessarily come with age, spiritual growth doesn’t necessarily come with being a Christian. A new Christian is like a child – in need of good food, care and guidance. Without those things, he or she will be malnourished and lack direction. As a result, the new Christian could fail to grow properly, get lost in a sea of competing ideas, or die.

“It is a sad truth that many Christians are lured away from their faith by Satan. Peter wrote about them in 2 Peter 2:20: ‘If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.’

“The principles that form the structure of this book were developed during devotionals the author had with his grandchildren. They were meant to provide a strong, easy-to-remember foundation for their young faith. As the idea for a book developed, the writer knew he wanted it to be useful for a lifetime – something his daughters and grandchildren could refer back to occasionally as they experience the varying terrain of life. So he incorporated ideas that are relevant to Christians of all ages.

“Using a combination of humor, scripture and common sense, Growing Toward God provides some simple but important principles to help Christians young and old grow in their most important relationship.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Bill Glenn’s new book offers readers a gentle guidance towards a more fulfilling relationship with God.

With a lighthearted tone, Glenn discusses key components to living a Godly life and offers insight on how to overcome worldly obstacles that may be present in one’s life.

Massachusetts Lawsuit Alleges Episcopal Priest Robert Hiller Malm Engaged in Defamation, Abuse of Process, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress

The Rev. Robert Hiller Malm, an Episcopal priest canonically resident in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, has been sued in the Wareham Massachusetts district court for alleged abuse of process, defamation/libel, and the intentional infliction of emotional distress by former parishioner and retired attorney Eric J. Bonetti, docket number 2160CV000109.

The pleadings allege that Malm observed the plaintiff peacefully protesting on a public street near St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Marion Massachusetts and contacted local police, allegedly telling officers that the plaintiff had “stalked,” harassed,” and “threatened” Malm.

Further, the pleadings allege that Malm subsequently filed a request for a harassment protection order based on similar fabrications, including allegedly telling the Wareham court that he had not committed perjury in prior litigation between the parties, with the improper objective of preventing Bonetti from protesting near the church. They also allege that Malm posted a defamatory video to the St. Gabriel’s website containing similar claims.

The pleadings further allege that Malm’s actions were intended to damage the plaintiff’s reputation and to cause emotional distress.

In addition to unspecified damages, the pleadings ask for an injunction prohibiting Malm from contacting the plaintiff, as well as a referral for criminal prosecution of Malm’s alleged perjury.

“Weight On God”: a potent examination of faith. “Weight On God” is the creation of published author, Charles Pierce, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and proud misfit.

Pierce writes, “Weight on God is a reminder that the pain that we carry, endure, or even cause is will and shall always be forgivable.

Our God will use our failures, faults, and even our fears to form an unshakable faith that seeks him out in the most troubling of times.

Weight on God will walk you through depression, divorce, adultery, addiction, and incarceration.

This book is a gateway to self-discovery. It will help you to find and focus on an inner strength and courage that will not be doused by oppressive thoughts nor suicidal tendencies.

This book will help you to take your life back, give it new meaning, and put the joy back into living.

You might be thinking, ‘Well, I am okay. I am not plagued by any of these things.’ Well to you I say, keep living or perhaps search the faces of your family and friends.

Somewhere, someone, needs this book because they are hiding in addiction, heartbroken by divorce, caught in an adulterous relationship, or languishing behind prison walls.

Weight on God will help to free them, empower them, and give them back their lives.

This is not a self-help book. It is, however, a help-self book, its whole premise is about pulling yourself out of self-pity and placing the weight that we carry on the God that we trust.

When life has left you defeated, impatient, or in a hurry, step back and take a moment to wait on God.”

Diane Howard’s newly released “Polly’s Garden” is a charming children’s tale of adventures in a vegetable garden

News Image

“Polly’s Garden”: a lovingly crafted tale. “Polly’s Garden” is the creation of published author Diane Howard, a loving sister and creative soul.

Howard shares, “I wrote Polly’s Garden for my sister in her final few weeks. When we were children, she would tell me the most fantastic stories. It then stood to reason that in her last months, the two of us would visit the Garden each evening before bedtime, lying in the dark while spinning tales and giggling. It was at once the most heartbreaking and transformational period of my life.

I learned so many incredible life lessons from my sister Polly, but perhaps none is as important as the realization that we’re all stronger and far more capable than we think. Not in a strong-as-steel sense, rigid and unforgiving, but more so in that we’re strong like water. We ebb and flow. We love. We grieve. We recover.

And we share.

“I do hope you enjoy her story.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Diane Howard’s new book is an enjoyable tale of using one’s imagination.

Written in honor of a dearly departed sister, Howard welcomes readers to enjoy a whimsical story of the adventures that can await them if they take the time to look.

Author Nicholas A. Villani’s new book “Vocational Engagement Model” is an enlightening work that forces agencies to rethink job placement for people with disabilities

News Image

Nicholas A. Villani, founder of Career and Employment Options who also created the Vocational Engagement Model after experiencing a connection to the medical community and years working with the education community, has completed his new book “Vocational Engagement Model: A Journey Into the Intersection of Different Disciplines to Reinvent the Job Placement Process”: an inspiring work that focuses on assisting job placement for people with disabilities.

The author writes, “Imagine the moment where you are working in the field providing employment services for people with disabilities and realize that the structure, or lack thereof, has contributed to the ongoing lack of progress. Imagine that moment where you see other disciplines such as education and medical fields engaging in their services in a more effective manner that makes every day in your job seem chaotic and redundant. Finally, imagine that there was this illuminating moment where it seemed as if you may have found the answer to the question ‘Why can’t we make the progress we so desperately want?’ That is the origin and implementation of the Vocational Engagement Model.”

Published by Page Publishing, Nicholas A. Villani’s engaging book is a crucial training tool for anyone who works with people with disabilities.

The Vocational Engagement Model (VEM) presents the intersection of different disciplines to rethink job placement services as they are offered to people with disabilities today. The model connects aspects of the medical, educational, and rehabilitation disciplines in a process to improve the skills of the people who seek assistance to find and keep employment. VEM transcends the traditional format for job placement services, as defined by state VR systems. It is designed to manage the job placement service and exemplify cost optimization and job-seeker engagement. VEM intends to

  • more fully engage the job seeker, their family and circle of support in the entire job search process;
  • establish a “career quest” agreement on how services will be provided and establish the level of commitment and required activities for both the job seeker and career consultant;
  • learn how to use a series of assessment instruments that will assist the career consultant to best counsel the job seeker with use of metacognitive skills;
  • manage the job placement service both structurally and fiscally for cost optimization to minimize time from referral to placement, thereby facilitating personal engagement while managing the hours toward profitability; and
  • establish Vocational Engagement Teams (VET) to create peer support systems and maximize staff skill and supports, not unlike “rounds” in the medical model.

The Vocational Engagement Model is the evolutionary change in the provision of job placement services. It encourages “guardrails” for staff to work within while retaining their own creativity. The end result is total personal engagement, management of the job placement process with true cost optimization.

Readers who wish to experience this engrossing work can purchase “Vocational Engagement Model: A Journey Into the Intersection of Different Disciplines to Reinvent the Job Placement Process” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.
