Lighting Up The Sky To remember 6 Million Lost for International Holocaust Remembrance Day

“We at Mosaic Marketing are particularly proud of our comprehensive digital marketing campaign to promote this event. We have utilized a dynamic website, engaging social media platforms, and visually impactful digital billboards to effectively communicate our message to millions. A notable example is our digital ad for the billboard at the east entrance to I95 and I91, running throughout January, informing millions of drivers about the landmarks lighting up yellow in our community to commemorate this day of Holocaust memory,” Canosa observed.

BRANFORD, Conn., Jan. 11, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — “As we take down our holiday lights, let’s get ready to spot the many New Haven area landmarks which will be turning on yellow lights on January 27,” observed Al Canosa, Managing Director of Mosaic Marketing located in Branford, CT.

“I am excited as we join landmarks like Niagara Falls, the Empire State Building, and the Cuomo Bridge, lighting up our buildings for International Holocaust Remembrance Day,” continued Canosa.

January 27 has been designated by the United Nations as the annual date to pause and reflect on the Holocaust and its lessons for our world. Between 1939 and 1945, the Nazi government of Germany methodically persecuted and murdered over six million Jewish men, women, children, and infants with a single goal: Eradicate all Jews in the world. That murder is called “the Holocaust”.

Why yellow?

“During the Holocaust, the German Nazis and their allies forced Jews to wear yellow stars of David on their clothing, marking them as ‘the other’, ” observed Doris Zelinsky, President of Greater New Haven Holocaust Memory (GNHHM) and the daughter of two Holocaust survivors.

“Yellow lights remind us of these yellow stars, the beginning of what became the systematic torture and murder of six million people simply because they were Jewish. The color yellow highlights how slippery the slide of hate can be,” Zelinsky added.

Greater New Haven Holocaust Memory is a nonprofit that cares for the New Haven Memorial and uses its story to bring forward the searing lessons of the Holocaust.

“Lessons from nearly eighty years ago are lessons that remain so apt for our times,” Zelinsky emphasized.

“Our Memorial was the first built on public land in the United States. This unique legacy gives us a special obligation in New Haven. That’s why we will light up our landmarks with bright yellow lights on January 27, continuing the strong tradition of the Memorial’s founders for our community to both remember and learn,” Zelinsky explained.

Canosa enumerated the area participants who will light up with yellow lights on January 27: Branford Town Hall, the Branford James Blackstone Memorial Library, New Haven City Hall, the “Fusco building” at 555 Long Wharf, the Towers on Tower Lane, Union Train Station, the Temple Street Garage, the Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 205 Church Street, Orange Town Hall, Guilford Town Hall and Or Shalom Synagogue.

“We are thankful to our participating landmarks,” Zelinsky added. “And we stand proud with them on January 27, 2024, as the first community outside New York State to light major landmarks yellow on International Holocaust Remembrance Day,” Zelinsky concluded.

Canosa and Zelinsky encouraged us to look up at these landmarks on January 27, to take in these shining yellow lights across our community, to pause, and to reconfirm our responsibilities to blunt the dangers of intolerance and the perils of hate.

National University and School Districts Awarded $14.9 Million to Expand Research-based Community School Model

With prestigious U.S. Department of Education grant, the San Diego-based university, National School District and San Marcos Unified School District will build community school programs that offer a single stop for children and families

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 11, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — National University, which houses one of the largest colleges of education in the United States and is the largest provider of teaching credentials in California, today announced it received $14.9 million from the U.S. Department of Education to bring a nationally-recognized school model to high-need elementary, middle, and high schools in San Diego County. Through the five-year grant, the university as the grantee will provide community services to National School District and San Marcos Unified School District to implement full-service community programs, which integrate extended academic, social, health, and workforce development services through the university and community-based organizations.

“To ensure every learner has the opportunity to achieve their full educational potential, we need to create the conditions for healthy learning, which in many cases means understanding the challenges that students and their families may be experiencing outside the classroom,” said Dr. Robert Lee, dean of the Sanford College of Education, an expert in partnerships between community-based organizations and schools who founded the National Center for Urban Education at Illinois State University early in his career. “The power of the community school model is that it creates a single stop for multiple wraparound services that make it possible to meet the complex needs of children, families and communities.”

Interest in the community school model has accelerated in recent years, in part to help combat the impact of COVID-19 learning loss on K-12 student achievement. In 2023, federal investment in community school programs climbed to its highest level on record, and states have ramped up support with billions in funding. Research shows a strong evidence base for the model: a RAND study found improved attendance and student achievement at New York City community schools, while a study of community schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico found a $7 Return on Investment for every $1 invested in community school support.

Through a five-year project entitled Project ENLACES (Engaging a Network of Locally Accessible Community Establishments and Schools), the project will build Full-Service Community School programs at five high-need schools serving predominantly low-income neighborhoods and English language learners. The project was one of just 30 competitive grants awarded across the country, and one of three within the state of California.

In collaboration with National University’s JFK School of Psychology and Social Sciences, the School of Health Professions, Harmony Academy, and Workforce Education Solutions (WES), along with community-based organizations, the project will focus on delivering high-quality wraparound support services to address the emotional, social, health, and academic needs of children, including those who are English Language Learners (ELLs), students with disabilities, and students from other diverse backgrounds, cultures and languages. For example, the program will offer free on-site after-school and summer programs, using the areas near school as the center hub for the community, as well as high-quality early childhood education programs and services for parents.

To implement the program, the project team has assembled a diverse coalition of nonprofit and community-based organizations to help provide integrated health care, enrichment, high-quality early childhood education, family therapy and other services. The list of organizations includes:

  •     A Reason To Survive (ARTS)
  •     Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos
  •     Community Wraparound
  •     Comprehensive Youth Services
  •     FBI San Diego Citizens Academy Alumni Association
  •     Fresno County Juvenile Justice Commission
  •     National Head Start Association
  •     Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center
  •     Project Next
  •     YMCA of San Diego County

“We have the opportunity to be a model for California and the nation on how community schools can genuinely change the trajectory of a child’s life and elevate the vitality of both the school and the community,” said Dr. Sharmila Kraft, assistant superintendent of educational services at National School District. “This is about tapping the power of place and community partnerships to help meet the needs of learners and change the trajectories of children.”

The U.S. Department of Education Grant is the latest in a series of pilot programs designed by NU’s Sanford College of Education in collaboration with school districts and local education agency partners, including an innovative teacher residency program established in Chula Vista. As the largest education school in California, the Sanford College of Education brings to bear a unique combination of faculty expertise, online instruction, school, district and community partnerships, research opportunities, and holistic student support to meet the diverse needs of the K-12 education workforce.

News/Media Alliance President & CEO Danielle Coffey to Testify at Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on Oversight of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Future of Journalism

Coffey’s comments before the Subcommittee will explain how Generative AI tools exploit news content to compete directly with publishers, yet need quality journalism to train their systems. Coffey will focus on the copyright infringement implications of how GAI developers train and use their models, as well as the need for legislation, including requiring transparency and responsibility from GAI developers, and passing the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act (JCPA), which would allow publishers to collectively negotiate for fair compensation for use of their content by the dominant tech platforms, such as Meta and Google.

Since generative AI technology took off exponentially last year, the News/Media Alliance has been leading the call for AI companies to seek proper permissions and licensing from publishers for use of their valuable content. Last fall, the Alliance published a White Paper revealing that GAI systems copy massive amounts of publishers’ original works, almost always without authorization or compensation, and publisher content is overweighted in materials used for training these systems. The White Paper and comments the Alliance submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office also explain the legal implications of such use.

In response to the hearing, News/Media Alliance President & CEO, Danielle Coffey stated, “We commend Subcommittee Chair Richard Blumenthal and Ranking Member Josh Hawley and the Senate Judiciary Committee for recognizing the urgent need to address our very serious concerns about the impacts of AI technology on providers of quality journalism, as well as the legal questions this raises. AI companies are scraping our content to compete with it – usually without any compensation to, or permission from the publishers of that content – while they reap all the benefits. This is classic freeriding that infringes publishers’ copyrights and goes far beyond fair use.”

Coffey’s testimony offers multiple suggestions for policymakers, including:

  • Recognizing that unauthorized use of publishers’ expressive content for commercial GAI training and development is likely to compete with and harm publisher businesses in a manner that infringes copyright;
  • Creating transparency requirements to require the recordkeeping and disclosure of unauthorized training uses of material that is protected by copyright, by technical protection measures, or governed by contractual terms prohibiting scraping; and
  • Adopting legislation to remedy existing market imbalances that prevent publishers from engaging in fair negotiations for the use of their content against dominant platforms.

A new report released by the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in November found that the rate of newspaper closures has accelerated, now at 2.5 closures per week (with more than 130 confirmed newspaper closings or mergers in the last year), resulting in the expansion of news deserts, in which communities lack a source of local news.

Coffey concluded, “For years the tech platforms have gotten away with using publishers’ content without appropriate compensation. This problem, having gone unaddressed, has been getting worse and now, AI doubles down on the threat the largest tech platforms pose to publishers’ viability. Countries all over the world are introducing and passing legislation requiring the tech platforms to pay news publishers. The United States cannot fall behind other countries and should pass the JCPA, which will ensure publishers can continue to provide important high-quality journalism we all depend on. We have to act now before it’s too late.”

The News/Media Alliance is a nonprofit organization representing more than 2,200 news and magazine media organizations and their multiplatform businesses in the United States and globally. Alliance members include print and digital publishers of original journalism. Headquartered just outside Washington, D.C., the association focuses on ensuring the future of journalism through communication, research, advocacy, and innovation.
