ASHA CEO Joins With Counterparts Pledging Workplace Diversity and Inclusion

For decades, ASHA has been a leader championing diversity. In 1969, it established the office that operates today as the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the National Office.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) announced today that ASHA CEO Vicki R. Deal-Williams, MA, CCC-SLP, FASAE, CAE, has joined with nearly 2,000 other CEOs and presidents in signing the CEO Pledge for Diversity & Inclusion.

The pledge, a creation of CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™, the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace, https://www.ceoaction.com/, calls for signatories to act on supporting more inclusive workplaces by

  • continuing to make workplaces trusting places to have complex, and sometimes difficult, conversations about diversity and inclusion;
  • implementing and expanding unconscious bias education;
  • sharing best practices—as well as unsuccessful ones—with counterparts; and
  • creating and sharing strategic inclusion and diversity plans with their respective boards.

Taking the pledge fits well with ASHA’s ongoing commitment to achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and it also facilitates further growth in pursuing that goal, Deal-Williams said.

“It is critical that our efforts be bold and clearly focused,” she noted. “The commitment that comes with the pledge includes information and resource sharing. That will make it possible for us to learn from each other and our respective experiences.”

For decades, ASHA has been a leader championing diversity. In 1969, it established the office that operates today as the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the National Office. The organization’s staff of 300 are provided with DEI educational resources and have opportunities to participate in conversations like those mentioned in the CEO Action pledge. Such steps are just one aspect of a broader and continuing effort to foster DEI among ASHA’s staff and among the audiology and speech-language pathology professions that it represents.

“We have made strides with respect to DEI,” Deal-Williams said, “but, like many other organizations and companies, we are keenly aware of the need for much more progress. We must remain strongly committed to achieving that, and press forward, intentionally and actively.”

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for 223,000 members and affiliates who are audiologists; speech-language pathologists; speech, language, and hearing scientists; audiology and speech-language pathology support personnel; and students. Audiologists specialize in preventing and assessing hearing and balance disorders as well as providing audiologic treatment, including hearing aids. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) identify, assess, and treat speech, language, and swallowing disorders. http://www.asha.org. Author S. Carl Binion’s new book “The Book of Revelation ” is a faith based work meant to guide believers to understand the Book of Revelation

News Image

S. Carl Binion, a Christian radio DJ who is intrigued by the Book of Revelation, has completed his new book “The Book of Revelation ”: a compelling work on the Book of Revelation.

Binion shares, “With God’s help, I hope to convince many of you about the great salvation in understanding the book of Revelation. From the very outset, John the Apostle wrote that these things must soon come to pass (Rev. 1:1–3).This message is from Jesus Christ himself, a message of God’s power and authority, of his judgment upon evil mankind, and most importantly, the redemption and ultimate salvation of all those who trust in Jesus for their salvation.

Revelation is the climax of a six-thousand-year adventure, part of the story of God’s great love for us who believe and of salvation that leads to eternal life for all who “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus”(Rev. 12:17 and 14:12).

Revelation is the last part of the greatest book ever written, the Holy Bible. However, the majority of ministers have misinterpreted its contents.

With the entire Bible as our backdrop, Jesus’sangel, whom he sent to John, brought a message about our future to the apostle John (apostle is Greek for “sent one”). John didn’t read these words, but like a hologram right out of Star Wars, John witnesses future events that surround Jesus’s Second coming. He sees them in 3D realism, being right there to witness and write down what he saw for our sake.”

Published by Page Publishing, S. Carl Binion’s faith-based tale sheds light on the portion of the Holy Bible that is so often misunderstood, misinterpreted and feared. Born of his own intrigue with the Book of Revelation, Binion hopes to provide a new take on the Book in question.

Readers who wish to experience this intriguing work can purchase “The Book of Revelation ” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) joined other members of the Cancer Leadership Council in writing a letter of congratulations to Robert Califf on his confirmation as commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

AONN+ Program Director Sharon Gentry said Califf’s confirmation is “an acknowledgement of our work with other health professionals and agencies to establish and maintain a climate of mutual respect, dignity, diversity, ethical integrity, and trust.”

According to the letter prepared by the Cancer Leadership Council, the cancer care community has had a productive relationship with the FDA, including participation in drug development meetings, discussion of real-world evidence for use in FDA decisions, and collaboration on clinical trials issues.

AONN+ signed this letter based on the support and recommendation of its Policy & Advocacy Committee, whose mission is to utilize legislative, regulatory, and policy advocacy to protect and promote the practice of oncology patient navigation in order to best serve individuals and families impacted by cancer.

“For navigation professionals, the concepts of leadership and team building are inherent in the standards of care that are demonstrated daily,” said Sharon. “As a professional organization, AONN+ also demonstrates an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of healthcare.”

A tenured professor of cardiology at Duke University, Califf had served as FDA Commissioner between February 2016 and November 2017. President Biden renominated him to head the FDA on November 12, 2021.

With more than 30 member organizations, the Cancer Leadership Council is a forum for discussion and advocacy on issues related to cancer health policy and cancer patients’ access to quality care.

Dear Dr. Califf:

The undersigned organizations representing cancer patients, health care professionals, researchers, and caregivers are writing to offer our congratulations on your confirmation as Commissioner of Food and Drugs.

Your steady leadership is critical at this moment when the nation is still addressing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our health and welfare and as the other vital work of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must also be completed following the most rigorous regulatory standards.

Our community has enjoyed a productive relationship with the FDA, including participation in patient-focused drug development meetings and other patient-centered efforts; discussion regarding real-world evidence and its use in FDA decisions; and collaboration on clinical trials issues, including design and enrollment standards. We have found the FDA open and respectful of our views on the work of the FDA and our advice regarding the needs of cancer patients, clinical researchers, and health care professionals. National Braille Press Launches Pilot Program to Provide Tools and Resources for Teachers of the Visually Impaired

Learning braille is an essential skill for blind and low-vision individuals and we hope that these additional resources will go a long way toward increasing braille literacy

National Braille Press (NBP) today announced a pilot program to provide educational resources for Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) to help them teach students who are blind and have low-vision. NBP will begin shipping the free “TVI Braille Ignition Kits” to TVIs on March 2nd, to coincide with National Read Across America Day.

The pilot program is made possible through support from the Gibney Family Foundation and the Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation.

“It’s National Read Across America Day and we want to ensure that teachers of students who are blind and low vision have access to more educational resources. That is why we developed the ‘TVI Braille Ignition Kits’ with the generous support of the Gibney Family Foundation and Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation,” said Brian Mac Donald, President, National Braille Press. “Learning braille is an essential skill for blind and low-vision individuals and we hope that these additional resources will go a long way toward increasing braille literacy.”

“Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation has a rich history of collaboration with National Braille Press, especially with pilot programs,” said Dianna Kelly-Naghizadeh, Grant Program Manager at the Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation. “These collaborations have yielded great outcomes, and we are confident that NBP’s latest pilot program, TVI Braille Ignition Kits, will also be positive and successful in bridging the resource gap that TVIs experience daily, which will improve their students’ productivity and independence in their education.”

There are four different “TVI Braille Ignition Kits” available include materials supporting braille literacy.

  • Braille Resources Kit includes UEB Brief Symbols List; Because Books Matter; Because Pictures Matter; Braille Alphabet Cards (packet of 35 cards); Just Enough to Know Better; the Braille Spelling Dictionary; and a slate and stylus.
  • Tactile Graphics Kit includes a new best practices guide for creating tactile graphics for students; Because Pictures Matter; and several books and products that use tactile graphics in different ways (Tactile Alphabet and Numbers, Humpty Dumpty and Other Touching Rhymes, and The Tactile Book of Dinosaurs)
  • Assistive Technology Kit includes large print reference guides to operating systems (iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows 10); and the Windows Screen Reader Keystroke Compendium (large print edition.)
  • Math & Science Kit includes UEB Reference Sheets for Math (large print); Out of Sight Science Experiments (large print/braille); and a tactile caliper.

The kits also include coupons for teachers to obtain free braille copies of various titles from NBP’s bookstore. All TVIs or paraprofessionals working in the blindness field in the U.S. are eligible for a free “TVI Ignition Braille Ignition Kit” and may apply online at http://www.nbp.org.

Janet Ulwick-Sacca has been a TVI for over 35 years. When hearing about the program, she had this to say: “The National Braille Press has done it again! Their newest resource, the TVI Braille Ignition Kits, provide free braille and tactile literacy materials to TVIs and Paraprofessionals working in the blindness field. Sharing resources provides critical support for itinerant teachers who often don’t have daily connections with professionals in the field. Thank you NBP!”

For blind people, braille is an essential tool that aids in the process of becoming literate. Braille literacy plays the same key role in a blind person’s life that print literacy does in a sighted person’s, by increasing opportunities for employment and academic achievement. Over 70% of working-age blind people are unemployed and depend on support such as disability income benefits. Of the 30% of blind people who are employed, the majority are braille readers. It is estimated that the lost productivity due to blindness and eye diseases is over $8.0 billion per year in the United States.

About National Braille Press

National Braille Press is a non-profit braille publisher and producer of braille products. NBP creates products and programs to support braille literacy in the blind community and to provide access to information that empower blind people to actively engage in work, family, and community. Gunderson Direct’s Better Every Day Challenge Raises Awareness and More Than $52k for Special Needs Charity: Special Forces Sports Foundation

News Image

It was an honor to be included in the #BetterEveryDay challenge. The visibility our foundation was given—and the funds we received—will help us bring events to more communities, connect children with special needs and athletes, and build inclusive opportunities that teach compassion and empathy.

Gunderson Direct, one of the largest independent direct mail agencies, has secured a total of $52,885 in donations to benefit special needs sports programs through its Better Every Day Challenge.

From Valentine’s Day through February 18, 2022, hundreds of individuals participated in a daily jump rope challenge. Gunderson Direct sent participants a special box in the mail that contained a jump rope, sweatband, score card, and instruction sheet.

The challenge kicked off with 20 jumps on February 14, and the daily goal increased each day until it reached 100 jumps on the final day. Each day after participating, individuals posted pictures of their completed scorecards to their Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn accounts along with the hashtag #BetterEveryDay.

This challenge was inspired by the addition of Gunderson Direct’s new Better Every Day value—one of five core values that drive the agency’s culture and vision. By getting people involved in healthy activities—and providing awareness and support to the Special Forces Sports Foundation—Gunderson Direct channeled this value to benefit both the individual and the community.

Here are the results for the five-day challenge:

  • Challenge Kits Sent: 350
  • Social Likes and Shares: 4,176
  • Total Jumps/Reps: 143,550
  • Total Donations Received: $52,885

These results exceeded expectations by thousands of dollars, with the entire sum going to benefit the nonprofit Special Forces Sports Foundation, which pairs children with disabilities with high school and collegiate athletes to include them in team sports otherwise unavailable to them.

Regarding the challenge—and the results—Gunderson Direct President Mike Gunderson states, “At Gunderson Direct we strive to be Better Every Day for our clients, our employees, and of course our community. This was a special effort, and we are very happy we could spread goodwill, increase awareness, and raise funds to help the kids benefiting from the Special Forces Sports Foundation.”

And “Dr.” Matt Lance, the founder of Special Forces Sports Foundation, had this to say, “It was an honor to be included in the #BetterEveryDay challenge. The visibility our foundation was given—and the funds we received—will help us bring events to more communities, connect children with special needs and athletes, and build inclusive opportunities that teach compassion and empathy.”

Gunderson Direct will award the funds to the Special Forces Sports Foundation at one of the nonprofit’s upcoming events.

About Special Forces Sports Foundation: Special Forces Sports Foundation (SFSF) is a nonprofit organization that partners students with special needs with high school and collegiate athletes for engaging and rewarding experiences. Through its events such as Special Forces Sports Day, SFSF empowers groups to learn valuable life lessons from each other that they will carry through the rest of their lives.

About Gunderson Direct Inc.: Gunderson Direct is a top-rated marketing agency specializing in direct mail that works with companies of all sizes. Dale Funderburg’s newly released “Living by Faith, Not by Feelings” is an inspiring devotional that explores the author’s personal journey.

News Image

“Living by Faith, Not by Feelings: Sickness, Surgery, Suffering, and Sorrow as a Person of Faith 31-Day Devotional”: a moving look into the author’s personal experience with a significant health scare paired with thoughtful reflections on scripture. “Living by Faith, Not by Feelings: Sickness, Surgery, Suffering, and Sorrow as a Person of Faith 31-Day Devotional” is the creation of published author Dale Funderburg.

Funderburg shares, “Living by Faith, Not by Feelings is an account of what seemed to be an insurmountable circumstance. The lighthearted approach reveals an outlook that communicates God’s grace with a southern and country charm as well as a humorous outlook on life, no matter how dire the circumstances. Living by Faith, Not by Feelings began as a labor of love to honor the author’s church family of First Baptist Church in West Point, Mississippi. This church family faithfully prayed and supported the Funderburgs through an almost unbelievable timeline of medical drama, emotional trauma, and personal sorrow as told in each chapter as ‘My Story.’

“Since developed into this thirty-one-day devotional, including ‘Our Story,’ the work has been organized to testify to God’s sufficient grace to enable the reader to apply biblical principles into their own daily lives. Pain in life is complicated. This author attempts to describe how faith can govern our feelings by confidence in the sovereignty of God.

“Living by Faith, Not by Feelings is also a tribute that attempts to honor and remind our heroes who work in the medical field of the importance of their role to not only address the physical body but also to comfort the fearful soul.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Dale Funderburg’s new book will draw at the heartstrings and inspire as readers consider the author’s powerful testimony.

Funderburg shares in hopes of aiding others coping with the tribulations of life to keep the faith and lean into God’s love.

A 40-Day Journey Toward The Transformed and Renewed You” is a helpful resource for spiritual growth

News Image

“Radical Change: A 40-Day Journey Toward The Transformed and Renewed You”: a potent reminder of God’s commission to each believer. “Radical Change: A 40-Day Journey Toward The Transformed and Renewed You” is the creation of published author Wade A. Hartzell Sr., a loving husband and senior pastor at his local church.

Hartzell Sr. shares, “According to Jesus, discipleship isn’t an option. It’s a commission that all are to invest in. A disciple is defined as someone who not only accepts the teachings of Jesus Christ but also helps spread these teachings into all corners of the world. Many accept the teachings of Jesus Christ as truth, but few are willing to share these teachings with others. The truth is, most Christians don’t feel that they are equipped well enough to spread the Gospel. Radical Change is a tool for churches and individuals to equip them to be trained up to observe all that Jesus commanded.

“The church today does a great job of celebrating when someone gives their life to Christ—and rightfully so, as even Jesus says there is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner that repents than ninety-nine righteous people that don’t need to repent. However, I feel that church fails and leaves them at the altar wondering what to do from there. We celebrate and then send them back into the wilderness to fend for themselves, hoping they will return next week.

“The great commission is to make disciples, and I don’t believe this is done through midweek Bible studies. Jesus called twelve individuals who would eventually turn the world upside down. He was more interested in the investment instead of the size of the congregation. The generation coming to the altar today doesn’t have the support group at home to help them along this transformation journey. If we are going to make disciples to go into all nations, then the church has to take ownership of making the disciples. I wrote this book to help churches invest in the sinner at the altar with the goal to get them to the cross over.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Wade A. Hartzell Sr.’s new book offers a helpful breakdown of each day’s tasks.

Hartzell shares an encouraging series of instructions to aid others seeking a deeper connection and understanding of God.

Consumers can purchase “Radical Change: A 40-Day Journey Toward The Transformed and Renewed You” at traditional brick & mortar bookstores, or online at Amazon.com, Apple iTunes store, or Barnes and Noble.
