“The organizations, companies and individuals that support HABRI deserve recognition for achieving this important milestone,” said Steven Feldman, HABRI Executive Director.

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) today announced funding for five new research projects focused on the positive effects of human-animal interaction (HAI) on human health and wellness. These new studies will examine the influence of pet ownership, animal-assisted therapy, service dogs, and dog-walking on various aspects of physical and mental health of children, adolescents and their families. With the funding of these five grants, HABRI’s total research funding has now exceeded $3 million.

“The organizations, companies and individuals that support HABRI deserve recognition for achieving this important milestone,” said Steven Feldman, HABRI Executive Director. “Their contributions have allowed HABRI to fund high-quality research projects that build to the body of evidence for pet ownership and HAI as essential to our health.”

The following five research projects were awarded funding in 2019:

Megan Arant (The University of British Columbia): Direct Experimental Assessment of Therapy Dog Handlers on Child and Dog Behavior During AAI

Marguerite E. O’Haire (Purdue University): Evaluating the Effects of Service Dogs on Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Their Caregivers

Megan Kiely Mueller (Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University): Human-Animal Interaction and Trajectories of Youth Development in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study

Kamala London (University of Toledo): Implementation of Canine-Assisted Forensic Interviews with Children

Eunice Chen (Temple University): Diamond Dogs: A Pilot Dog-Walking Trial with Overweight College Students and Dog Shelters in the Inner-City

The funded projects from the University of British Columbia and the University of Toledo are focused on the impact and efficacy of therapy animals, and were made possible by Pet Partners, which committed $100,000 for HABRI research in this area.

Since HABRI’s founding in 2010, HABRI has funded 31 scientific research projects from institutions across the globe, and has supported the creation of HABRI Central, the world’s most comprehensive online library of human-animal interaction research.

National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) Provides Guidance on SECURE Act

[NAELA logo]

www.NAELA.org

In addition to serving as experts on how to plan with trusts under the SECURE Act, NAELA worked to obtain changes in the final bill to ensure that trusts for people with disabilities could retain ‘the stretch’

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) recognizes the impact that the new Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act will have on estate plans, especially those that involve leaving funds to people with disabilities. The SECURE Act brings major changes to retirement tax policy, particularly the rules that limit “stretch” IRAs. The “stretch” allowed an inheritor to take money out of a retirement account over their lifetime. The SECURE Act requires most, but not all individuals, to take the money out in 10 years. Yet, many estate plans do not leave retirement accounts outright to inheritors, but in a trust for their benefit. NAELA members understand how these changes will impact trusts, including supplemental needs trusts for people with disabilities and trusts for minor children.

“In addition to serving as experts on how to plan with trusts under the SECURE Act, NAELA worked to obtain changes in the final bill to ensure that trusts for people with disabilities could retain ‘the stretch’,” said NAELA President-Elect Wendy Cappelletto, Esq., CAP.

Families should review their estate plans in light of these changes. NAELA member attorneys are well-equipped to assist with your estate planning and retirement needs. Find a NAELA member attorney in your area.

About NAELA

Members of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) are attorneys who are experienced and trained in working with the legal problems of aging Americans and individuals of all ages with disabilities. The mission of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys is to educate, inspire, serve, and provide community to attorneys with practices in elder and special needs law. Challenged Athlete Foundation to Host Nordic Skiing and Biathlon Clinic for Adaptive Athletes at Tamarack Resort

“Tamarack is grateful to host the CAF Biathalon and Nordic Skiing Clinic,” said Tamarack General Manager, Brad Larsen. “We are lucky to witness these amazing athletes take on new challenges. These extraordinary events show that being serious about accessibility in recreation benefits everyone.”

The Idaho chapter of the Challenged Athletes Foundation is scheduled to host a Nordic skiing and biathlon clinic for adaptive athletes, January 18-19 at Tamarack Resort, Tamarack, Idaho.

Nearly 30 adaptive athletes as young as 6 years old will receive world-class training from Paralympians and Olympic biathlon and skiing coaches including BethAnn Chamberlain, U.S. Paralympic Nordic development coach; Greg Mallory, Kristina Sabasteanski, Sean Halstead and “One-Arm” Willie Stewart, Paralympians; Eric Reynolds, Olympian; Marc Mast, elite Nordic coach and designer of adaptive Nordic equipment; and Wilson Dippo, Bogus Basin Nordic skiing and adaptive Nordic coach. Kevin Holtry, a Boise Police Department officer injured in the line of duty in 2016 will also be in attendance.

“There are nearly 200,000 Idahoans living with disabilities,” said Jennifer Skeesick, CAF-Idaho Regional Director. “These clinics provide an opportunity to strengthen the existing adaptive sports community in Idaho and empower individuals with permanent physical challenges through sport.”

Most medical insurance does not cover adaptive sports equipment, making the cost of equipment an obstacle for those with physical disabilities. By partnering with an accessible resort that can provide ski in/ski out access, and by making adaptive equipment readily available, CAF ensures clinic attendees can focus solely on acquiring new skills, increasing self-esteem and enhancing their quality of life.

“Tamarack is grateful to be the host of the CAF Biathalon and Nordic Skiing Clinic,” said Tamarack General Manager Brad Larsen. “We are lucky to be able to witness these amazing athletes as they take on new challenges. These kinds of extraordinary events show that being serious about accessibility in recreation benefits everyone.”

Future scheduled clinics include a sledge hockey clinic in Boise, Idaho, February 8, and a sledge hockey and standup/wheelchair curling clinic in Hailey, Idaho, March 6-7.

The Birth Injury Lawyers Group Launches New $2,500 Scholarship for Students with Cerebral Palsy

The Birth Injury Lawyers Group is pleased to launch a new $2,500 college scholarship for students diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

“As we work with medical specialists and life care planning experts, we see the challenges that those affected by cerebral palsy face,” said attorney Robert Goldwater of the Birth Injury Lawyers Group. “That is why we started this scholarship to help dedicated students with cerebral palsy seize educational opportunities and fight for their goals.”

Goldwater is a parent to triplets, two of whom were diagnosed with cerebral palsy, making his work as a birth injury lawyer especially meaningful to him.

Criteria for Cerebral Palsy Scholarship

To qualify as an eligible scholarship applicant, a student must have received a cerebral palsy diagnosis. They must currently be enrolled in high school with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Furthermore, the student must already have been accepted to a four-year university or college. All applicants are required to agree to the Terms and Conditions as outlined in the scholarship information page on the Birth Injury Lawyers Group website.

How to Apply for the Scholarship

Any student interested in applying for the Birth Injury Lawyers Group Cerebral Palsy Scholarship must complete the application form which includes a mechanism for uploading any relevant documents on the scholarship information page on the Birth Injury Lawyers Group website. Applicants may not email their applications and supporting documentation.

The deadline for applying for the Birth Injury Lawyers Group Cerebral Palsy Scholarship is June 15, 2020. The firm will contact the winner by email and/or phone in August of 2020.

How the Winner Will Be Determined

Goldwater’s personal experiences with his children enable him to anticipate the challenges that students with cerebral palsy face. “I know that the winner of this scholarship will put it to good use in pursuit of a college degree,” he said.

In keeping with this spirit, the Cerebral Palsy Scholarship will ask applicants to write and submit an essay responding to the following question:

“How has cerebral palsy affected your educational goals and how will the scholarship money help you in reaching your academic goals?”

The applicant will be chosen based on their background, academic achievements, and the essay that best embodies the spirit of hope that the Birth Injury Lawyers Group wishes to impart to children with cerebral palsy who might doubt their potential in life.

“The winner of this scholarship is someone we believe will make the most of it, will be an unstoppable force when it comes to pursuing their academic goals and their life goals,” Goldwater says. “They shall serve as a role model, a living embodiment of the possibilities that lie ahead for someone with cerebral palsy. They will be a beacon of hope.”

About the Birth Injury Lawyers Group

Robert Goldwater founded the Birth Injury Lawyers Group in 2003, a year after his wife gave birth to triplets who spent nearly the first year of their lives in various hospitals due to the numerous complications they suffered. His aim as a personal injury and medical malpractice attorney is to help families of children who suffer birth injuries, specifically those that could have been prevented were it not for negligence or medical malpractice.

Dominique Wilkin’s 60th Birthday Celebration

Dominique Wilkins 60th birthday

Wilkins says, “I love the City of Atlanta! It has given me so much and it’s time I use my platform to give back. It’s my honor to serve on KultureCity’s board and advocate for those with sensory needs.”

“The Human Highlight Reel”, Dominique Wilkins, is celebrating his 60th birthday this weekend with a fundraiser for KultureCity, a leading non-profit recognized nationwide for using their resources to revolutionize and effect change in the community for those with sensory needs; not just those with autism. Atlanta’s favorite son chose his city to celebrate this milestone.

The nine-time NBA All-Star and one of the best dunkers in NBA history has now committed to making venues throughout the world inclusive for all to attend. Wilkins serves as the Chairperson of the board for KultureCity. Wilkins has 3 children with special needs and understands the importance of inclusion for all. Wilkins says, “I love the City of Atlanta! It has given me so much and it’s time I use my platform to give back. It’s my honor to serve on KultureCity’s board and advocate for those with sensory needs.”

Sponsors of the event include: Selig Enterprises, Dixon Hughes Goodman, 3A, Kroger, Roger House (Axiom), MINI USA, Piedmont Healthcare, Attorney Ray Giudice, Oxygen Financial, Country Financial, Atlanta Falcons, Meeting Advice and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, and others.

Alpa Patel, Tax Partner in Dixon Hughes Goodman’s Atlanta office states, “At DHG, we are proud to support the causes that are important to our people and our clients. We are honored to sponsor KultureCity’s event at Scofflaw Brewing, which will raise funds to help improve the lives of those living with disabilities.”

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to over stimulation and noise, which is an enormous part of the environment in a venue. With the certification, venues are now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible when attending any event.

For those interested in supporting Wilkins and his cause, click here to donate: https://www.kulturecity.org/donate-sensoryinclusion/.

KultureCity has created over 450 sensory inclusive venues in 4 countries; this includes special events such as: NFL Pro-Bowl, NFL Super Bowl, MLB All Star Weekend. KultureCity has won many awards for its efforts: NASCAR Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award in 2017, Cleveland Cavaliers’ Quiet Space Sensory Room at Quicken Loans Arena was a finalist for the 2018 Stadium Business Award, and the 2018 Clio Sports Silver for social good in partnership with Cleveland Cavaliers/Quicken Loans Arena. Recently, KultureCity was awarded one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2019 by FastCompany.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation Awards Crucial Grants

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Foundation (CPARF) is proud to announce the award of nearly $16,000 in funding to its 2019 Small-Grant Cohort. CPARF funds research that will change the lives of people with CP, a disability that affects 18 million people globally.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Foundation (CPARF) is proud to announce the award of nearly $16,000 in funding to its 2019 Small-Grant Cohort. The winning grants fund critical researcher training, equipment, and travel to several underserved nations to help treat people with cerebral palsy (CP) and assist their families.

CPARF funds research that will change the lives of people with CP, a disability that affects 18 million people globally.

Each member of the 2019 Small-Grant Cohort advances CPARF’s mission in a tailored way. A training grant will support Dr. Susanne Martin Herz of University of California, San Francisco, as she learns how to administer the General Movements Assessment to diagnose CP quickly and prescribe vital early intervention therapies. She will share her experience with pediatricians in low- and middle-income countries and guide US-based pediatricians, leading to earlier diagnosis and treatment.

A small equipment grant will enable Northeastern University’s Dr. Danielle Levac to set up a mobile virtual reality (VR) lab to understand how children with CP learn new movement skills in VR, as well as how they can transfer these skills to real environments. The lab’s mobility will help them reach more children than they ever have before.

CPARF’s travel grants will take researchers to Malawi, Belize, and Zimbabwe. Katherine Herman and Juliette Schmidli of Otis College of Art and Design will teach caregivers in Malawi to use Appropriate Paper-Based Technology — affordable, templated, corrugated cardboard chairs that support children with CP so that they can sit upright, strengthen weakened muscles, and increase eye contact and social interaction as they observe their surroundings from a new perspective.

Dr. Margaret Cristofalo of Seattle University will visit the Children’s Rehabilitation Unit (CRU) in Zimbabwe to study how caregivers experience raising children with developmental disabilities. She will identify ways to improve long-term outcomes for children with CP and strengthen quality of life for their families. She will support interventions for these children, ensure that their caregivers give appropriate, effective care, and help support research at the CRU.

Long Island University’s Dr. Nia Mensah will lead occupational and physical therapy students as they treat children with disabilities on a life-changing spring break trip to Belize — a country with nearly 400,000 people that currently has no occupational therapists and only one physical therapist.

CPARF will announce its Large-Grant Cohort later this year.

CPARF’S MISSION

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation won’t stop until people with CP can live pain-free, until they can live the lives they envision for themselves, and until they can express what’s on their mind and be understood even when they can’t communicate verbally. We won’t stop until we can prevent CP in the first place. We won’t stop until we find a cure. As the only organization in the world solely focused on CP research, CPARF is poised to reshape the disability landscape. We’re poised to make breakthroughs. We are poised to change lives.
