Paso Robles Bathroom Remodeling Company Reports ‘Top Tips for Remodeling a Bathroom for Disability or Aging in Place’

Paso Robles bathroom remodeling

Bathrooms in private homes don’t have to strictly follow ADA requirements, but the guidelines are still an excellent reference.

When someone in the family becomes disabled it’s often necessary to remodel the bathroom so that room is easier to use. Frank Cueva, owner of Central Pacific Construction, bathroom remodeling experts in Paso Robles said, “The best way to start is to have a list of how the bathroom needs to change so that it’s easier to enter and exit, bathe, and all the other things we need to do in a bathroom.”

Fortunately, bathrooms in private homes don’t have to strictly follow American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, but using those requirements as guidelines is very useful. A private residence must be ADA compliant if a portion of the residence is used for certain kinds of business.

The degree of remodeling depends on the nature of the disability and the person’s preferences. Remodeling for wheelchair access and transfer has different needs than remodeling for someone who is still relatively able to get around under his or her own power or aging in place at home.

  • The door needs to be widened for wheelchair or walker access. The bathroom door should be at least 32-inches wide with a clearance of at least 36-inches. Shower doors also need to follow the same measurement.
  • Grab bars help people stabilize themselves while sitting down or standing up. Grab bars also give someone with balance concerns something to hold on to for extra support. Some of the best places to install grab bars are in the shower, near the shower door for entering and exiting and near the toilet. They need to be positioned 33-36 inches from the floor so they are easy to reach and solidly installed. The length varies according to use, although ADA compliance requires specific lengths for specific locations.
  • Wheelchairs require more floor space to navigate. The ADA requires a 30-inch by 48-inch access to the sink and also requires the center line of the toilet be between 16 and 18 inches from the side wall.
  • Add a shower or bathtub that is easy to get in and out. Showers can have curbless floors for wheelchair access or so there is nothing to trip over. Consider a walk-in bathtub. Add seating for the shower.
  • Replacing the toilet may not be necessary because riser seats can be installed to bring the seat to an easy height for transferring to and from a wheelchair. It’s also easier for some with arthritis or balance issues to have a higher seat.

Other considerations when planning the accessible bathroom include:

  • A bathroom for use during the remodel
  • Remodeling cabinets and shelves for easier access
  • Making sure that frequently traveled paths throughout the house are smooth and obstacle free
  • An idea about what you want the final bathroom to look like

The Miracle Project Announces Upcoming Virtual Musical Production, The Influencer

As they work together to virtually produce, edit, act, choreograph and compose original songs, they’re also expressing feelings, sharing imagination, emotional intelligence, and empathy for each other. Some experts might say that’s impossible – they’ve done the impossible.

The Miracle Project, a fully inclusive neurodiverse theater, film, social skills, and expressive arts program for individuals with autism and all abilities, is premiering the original musical film, The Influencer, via Zoom on June 25.

This original musical follows a close-knit Midwest family as they move to the big city and become negatively influenced by work, peer pressure, and social media. Created with, starring and filmed entirely during quarantine by teens and young adults on the autism spectrum and their peers, the musical deals with making choices between what others expect of you, who you want to be, and who you truly are.

Originally set to premiere as a staged production at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, The Influencer will now be streamed twice, with the first showing on Thursday, June 25, at 5 p.m. (PST) and second on Sunday, June 28 at 4 p.m. (PST). Following each show, there will be a 15-minute live talkback Q&A discussion with the directors, editors, actors, and songwriters from The Miracle Project.

“It’s been a remarkable experience to watch our students produce an original musical from miles apart. Not only are they facing the challenges that quarantine brings everyone, but the students and young adults of The Miracle Project’s Company class have also debunked some of the common myths around autism,” said Elaine Hall, founder of The Miracle Project and director of The Influencer. As they work together to virtually produce, edit, act, choreograph and compose original songs, they’re also expressing feelings, sharing imagination, emotional intelligence, and empathy for each other. Some experts might say that’s impossible – they’ve done the impossible.”

Celebrating the diversity and inclusion of students with all abilities and those on the autism spectrum, The Miracle Project gives students the opportunity to express themselves through collaborating on creative ideas, writing, music, dancing, and acting.

RSVP’s required and can be made online at http://www.themiracleproject.org/theinfluencer. Once a guest has registered, they will receive a private zoom link for the musical.

New Not-for-Profit, Virtual Summer Camp Purpose-Built for Special Needs Kids Starts Later This Month

BuddeConnect

What these kids have built would make any entrepreneur or not-for-profit professional simultaneously proud, envious and humble. They are living Booker T. Washington’s sage advice: ‘If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.

Camp BuddEConnect (BuddEConnect.org), a high-engagement virtual summer camp for special needs children preschool age and up, is launching this month to fill a void left by COVID-19. The pandemic has shut down or constrained many of the in-person programs upon which communities depend. Camp BuddEConnect offers kids with special needs the opportunity for social interaction, physical activity, personal connection and fun directly from their homes.

Camp BuddEConnect offers:

  • 5 one-week sessions; campers can apply for participation in any number of weeks
  • June 29th – July 31st
  • 5 days/week (Monday-Friday)
  • 2 to 3 hours/day starting at 2 pm EDT
  • About 40 campers/week, pre-school and older
  • Counselor/Staff to Camper ratio is approximately 3:4
  • Campers from around the world are encouraged to apply*

Camp BuddEConnect activities span a wide range of interests each day including arts and crafts, science experiments, physical activities, music, story time and entertainment “assemblies” complete with allergy-friendly camp snacks. To maximize each camper’s experience, a special Camp BuddEConnect Support Package, which includes allergy-friendly snacks, art supplies and other surprises, is provided each week a camper participates in the program. These Support Packages can be picked up locally in northern NJ or shipped free-of-charge to non-local participants.

Camp BuddEConnect costs $25 per camper, per week. Full scholarships for up to 5 weeks are available to campers upon request. Inability to pay will not be an impediment to participation. Camp applications are available here.

Founding Donors are encouraged to help support BuddEConnect, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Donations can be made via PayPal by clicking here.

BuddEConnect was formed by the student leaders of the West Morris Soccer Club TOPSoccer Program using Zoom to recreate the sense of community and engagement that was lost when in the one to one in person TOPSoccer sessions were shut down due to the COVID-19 stay-at-home and social distancing mandates. The weekly TOPSoccer sessions became TOPZoom sessions starting on April 11, 2020, and enabled the student volunteers to continue to connect with the large group of special needs children that were now missing the activities and interactions that were central to happy, fun interactions in everyday life.

With the end of the school year approaching and uncertainty about camps and other in-person activities reopening, student leaders recognized that the summer might not look that sunny for the TOPSoccer/TOPZoom athletes, other special needs children outside of our geographic reach. They were emboldened to use the experience gained from TOPZoom to extend the program into a full-blown special needs summer camp over Zoom, with fun, connection and joy as the main purposes. A team of student leaders, camp directors, and pro-bono adult advisors collaborated to create Camp BuddEConnect.

Doon Wintz, Camp BuddEConnect’s founding advisor and owner of three natural food companies based in New Jersey, was more than impressed by the quality of the students’ work and level of commitment, noting, “What these kids have built would make any entrepreneur or not-for-profit professional simultaneously proud, envious and humble. They are living Booker T. Washington’s sage advice: ‘If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.’”

“COVID-19 has resulted in schools and sport teams shutting down around the world. I would like to congratulate West Morris SC TOPSoccer / Camp BuddEConnect for extending the ability of our athletes to learn and stay engaged in their sporting activities during the summer months,” said Tom Condone, US Youth Soccer Director of Grassroots & Player Development.

About BuddEConnect

BuddEConnect is a project of West Morris Soccer Club, a 501(c)(3) community organization out of Mendham/Chester, NJ. BuddEConnect is dedicated to providing an inclusive, engaging and positive environment for children with special needs. This concept originates from TOPZoom, a virtual alternative to special needs activity-based programs. TOPZoom was established to replicate the social interaction, physical activity, and personal connection provided by TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer), which was interrupted by COVID-19 social distancing mandates. The creation of TOPZoom has exceeded expectations and proved that necessity is the mother of invention. BuddEConnect believes and has shown that fun and community need not be limited by circumstance or geography and that building a new, broader and lasting community of special needs children is achievable.

The high school and college student leaders working on Camp BuddEConnect and TOPZoom are supported by pro-bono adult advisers with expertise in a wide range of disciplines and are creating a lasting legacy of service and excellence.

Beyond TOPZoom and Camp BuddEConnect, BuddEConnect and West Morris Soccer Club are committed to helping other organizations adopt and implement the types of programs and techniques utilizing the training resources they have developed. US Youth Soccer intends to make these tools available to TOPSoccer programs throughout the nation later this year.

  • Camp BuddEConnect Support Packages can only be shipped to participants in the Continental United States. Participants outside the Continental United States will be required to provide their own camp supplies. The supplies list will be published well in advance of the camp week.

We utilize a variety of special education supports and programs to serve students with disabilities and promote meaningful access, participation and progress in the general curriculum, including constant teacher services, paraprofessional support, resource room service and integrated co-teaching.

“We understand that this executive order presents an enormous pressure on school districts as it must be managed in such a short amount of time,” says Kerry Leo, founder and CEO of Da Vinci. “We are prepared and ready to expedite services to your students and teachers.”

Our programs and alternative methods are used to modify the instructional approach and are customized to meet each of our students’ individual needs. After following strict guidelines and processes over the past five years, Spaulding staff prepared for the upcoming accreditation for several months. NHDOE representatives visited Spaulding’s campus to review the programs and services available to children and youth with educational disabilities compared to all private special education schools statewide. The visiting professional educators toured the school to gain an insider view of a day in the life of a Spaulding School student. As part of the process, The School at Spaulding Youth Center provided supporting materials, including student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), progress reports, samples of student work, grades, permanent records, curriculum and more for grades K-12 students 5-21 years of age.

This integration is especially important within special education curriculums and was an important component of program accreditation. When the COVID-19 pandemic closed school buildings across New Hampshire, The School at Spaulding was prepared to successfully transition to effective remote learning almost immediately due to their developed technology-based learning.

Excy Unveils New Bed Bicycle and No Slip Adaptive Foot Pedal for Bedridden Riders

“We’ve worked really hard to open up inclusive access to total body aerobic and anaerobic cycling exercise for every body type and age, regardless of injury, disability, or health condition,” said Michele Mehl, co-founder and CEO.

Excy (http://www.excy.com), the leader in quality portable full-body cycling equipment, today announced the XCS Bed Bike and the Hang in There (HIT) Adaptive Bike Pedal to combat the detrimental effects of being in bed without physical activity. The XCS Bed Bike is smaller and lighter than Excy’s current line of portable exercise bikes, and is uniquely designed to help people with limited mobility pedal in a hospital bed or on a therapy table while lying down flat or partially inclined. The HIT Adaptive Pedal, which is compatible with any 9/16” crank arm, keeps a rider’s foot locked in place to prevent it from falling while pedaling or resting.

Excy created the XCS Bed Bike and HIT Adaptive Pedal based on feedback from homebound riders, and its experience in hospitals and physical therapy clinics. The company has seen an increase in demand across all its product lines due to COVID-19 leading people to seek home exercise and strength training equipment, but without the large footprint of traditional equipment. People living with disabilities, health conditions or recovering from an injury or surgery often struggle with challenges like finding reliable and safe in-home care during normal situations, but COVID-19 has made it even harder for many, including their caretakers. A growing request to pedal in a hospital bed or on top of a therapy table at home helped speed up bringing the XCS Bed Bike to market now. The HIT Adaptive Pedal was designed to eliminate the burden of bedridden patients struggling to keep their feet lifted in place with traditional pedals designed only for recumbent or upright pedaling.

“I had brain surgery to have a tumor removed right as COVID-19 hit, which resulted in me being bedridden for weeks,” said Excy customer Carrie. “With Excy, I was able to pedal my legs in bed with my home physical therapists to avoid losing muscle mass, but also with my occupational therapist as part of my TBI recovery. Now, I can independently pedal and focus on building up my endurance and getting stronger at my own pace, but from the safety and comfort of home.”

Research demonstrates that supine motorized stationary bicycling affixed to a hospital bed, six days a week, as being safe for mechanically-ventilated patients early on in their ICU stay.

Research also suggests that exercise therapy may hold promise as an effective means of improving immunity in bedridden patients and may contribute to preventing aspiration pneumonia and promoting spontaneous recovery. If exercise can play a similar role to help novel coronavirus COVID-19 patients, the Excy team believes the XCS Bed Bike and the HIT Adaptive Pedal could play a role in helping those needing therapeutic cycling protocols to avoid inactivity while bedridden. Further research is required to explore the patients who may most benefit from bed cycling intervention.

“We’ve worked really hard to open up inclusive access to total body aerobic and anaerobic cycling exercise for every body type and age, regardless of injury, disability, or health condition,” said Michele Mehl, co-founder and CEO of Excy who had the idea for a full-body cycling approach for those with limited mobility after breaking her leg and getting a DVT blood clot. “COVID-19 has only strengthened our resolve to knock down the barriers of exercise for all and stay laser focused on making access to physical activity and muscle strengthening exercises easier for those with underlying conditions.”

The XCS Bed Bike works like a conventional heavy-duty exercise bike, except the rider can pedal while lying down. The system is smaller than Excy’s other portable exercise bike at only 12 pounds and has a smaller footprint while being used, yet gives riders 7 inches of additional leg extension to pedal lying down in bed. Like in all Excy models, the XCS Bed Bike offers a unique non-motorized, non-flywheel centric design that requires constant rotational pedaling force throughout the entire 360-degree cycling stroke, which is optimized for building up endurance and strength. Bi-directional resistance easily adjusts from 1-50 pounds for light to heavy forces for cardio, strengthening, and range of motion exercises for pedaling in bed, but the device also can be pedaled as a recumbent bike while seated in a chair or as a tabletop upper body ergometer from a seated and standing position. Riders can pedal independently or with assistance from their physical therapist, occupational therapist, medical fitness trainer, or with their caretaker based on the direction of their doctor.

The Excy HIT Adaptive Pedal uses a wide foot platform with adjustable straps that allow the heel to hang freely with support while also holding the foot steady to pedal comfortably and properly. Offering a range of foot flexibility that is similar to traditional bike shoes, riders can engage in isometric pedaling, small back and forth pressing, or pedal in full rotations. Since Excy’s resistance range is bi-directional, riders can recruit more muscles vs. simply pedaling in inertia-assisted circles that someone would do on a flywheel or motorized bike. They can follow this motion in reverse to work opposing muscles. The pedal is easily adjustable for sizes ranging from children’s feet with shoes, to size 13 men’s feet without shoes.

Pricing and Availability

The XCS Bed Bike is $799 and includes one set of straps that will accommodate a hospital bed or therapy table. Larger bed straps are available on request.
