Gallaudet University Launches New Guides in Apple Maps; New Guides Connect the Deaf Community to the Global Signing Ecosystem

Gallaudet Guides in Apple Maps

The global signing ecosystem is a vast and powerful engine driving economies, innovation and entrepreneurship…There are millions of Deaf and hard of hearing people worldwide who actively seek businesses that value them, embrace their language, and provide a truly inclusive experience.

Gallaudet University, the world’s premier university for Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deafblind students, today announced that it is bringing new Guides to Apple Maps to help connect users to businesses and organizations that value, embrace and prioritize the Deaf community and signed languages. Apple launched Guides last fall with iOS 14 to provide users a curated list of interesting places to visit in a city, find popular attractions, discover restaurants, and explore new recommendations.

Gallaudet’s creation of Apple Maps Guides aligns with its bilingual mission and will serve a critical role in advancing American Sign Language (ASL) vibrancy and equity for the Deaf community, and in promoting the use of signed and tactile languages. These Guides will also amplify the importance, cultural significance, and economic strength of the Deaf community for the larger hearing population.

The new guides are titled The Gallaudet Neighborhood; Deaf-Owned Businesses in the D.C. Area; All About Gallaudet; and Deaf Schools and Programs for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The Gallaudet Neighborhood guide features more than 30 businesses, including:

  •     Mozzeria, a Deaf-owned and operated Neapolitan pizza restaurant;
  •     Busboys and Poets, a restaurant that features ASL Poetry and ASL Slam nights;
  •     The first U.S. Signing Starbucks;
  •     Chase Bank with employees who can support financial needs through ASL or interpreters; and
  •     Apple Store at Carnegie Library with Deaf and hard of hearing staff, in addition to onsite interpreters for consultation and training.

“We are pleased to once again partner with Apple, building on our Connected Gallaudet initiative,” said Roberta J. Cordano, president of Gallaudet University. “We are especially delighted to debut our first four guides here in Washington, D.C., where we have a thriving Deaf economy. The global signing ecosystem is a vast and powerful engine driving economies, innovation and entrepreneurship. These new guides show the world what leading companies like Apple, Chase, Target, and Starbucks already know. There are millions of Deaf and hard of hearing people worldwide who actively seek businesses that value them, embrace their language, and provide a truly inclusive experience.”

“At Apple, we believe technology at its best can enable everyone to create, learn and stay connected,” said Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility. “We’re thrilled that Gallaudet’s introduction of these new guides will bring greater awareness of the vibrant Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deafblind communities, and showcase a wide range of Deaf-owned and Deaf-friendly organizations for Apple Maps users.”

An all-Deaf team of content curators and researchers worked with Apple to develop the guides. Curation of guides, present and future, will be driven by criteria that qualify locations and businesses to be part of the Signing Ecosystem. Over time, Gallaudet plans to expand its reach to all 50 states and showcase the evolving Signing Ecosystem nationally and internationally. The guides will automatically update when new places are added to a list, so users always have the latest recommendations.

The Signing Ecosystem (social media hashtag #SigningEcosystem) encompasses the Deaf Ecosystem and its allies, united through their rich socio-cultural origins and backgrounds, and conscious empowerment of each other. Members of the Signing Ecosystem work together for the socio-economic, ethical and political betterment of Deaf, hard of hearing, Deafblind, deaf-disabled, and late-deafened people globally. However, the guides are for everyone, deaf and hearing. To learn more, visit Gallaudet’s Signing Ecosystem webpage.

Gallaudet University, federally chartered in 1864, is a bilingual, diverse, multicultural institution of higher education that ensures the intellectual and professional advancement of Deaf, hard of hearing and Deafblind individuals through American Sign Language and English. The university enrolls over 1,600 students in more than 40 undergraduate majors and many master’s and doctoral programs. It also conducts research in various fields, including brain imaging, educational neuroscience, education, linguistics, psychology, Deaf history and culture, and Black Deaf history and culture.

Driving to Close The Disability Divide, area golfers take part in the 10th Annual MI-UCP Charity Golf Outing

News Image

For the 10th consecutive year, golfers will participate in the MI-UCP “Driving to Close the Disability Divide Charity Golf Outing” on June 18th at The Majestic at Walden Lake in Hartland, MI. MI-UCP is pleased to announce that all slots have been filled. To date, the event has raised over $150,000, with all proceeds going directly to MI-UCP.

The popular event began with a group of close friends who have played hockey together for years. When a member of that hockey family had a child diagnosed with cerebral palsy, they decided to take action, and an idea was born.

In order to raise awareness and to educate people about cerebral palsy, two of those long-time hockey friends, Jason Trzcinski and Matt Brown, approached MI-UCP about co-hosting a charity golf outing. Since then, there have been nine successful events including September, 2020 when 188 golfers (masked and socially distanced) played 27 holes at The Majestic at Walden Lake, raising nearly $24,000.

The event is dedicated to the MI-UCP vision: To enable all Michiganders with disabilities to live to the best of their abilities and ambitions.

As a group, these 1.4 million Michiganders who live with a disability have been marginalized and ignored for too long. Often being denied access to education, housing or employment, leaving many struggling with financial stability and independence. All of this has created a disability divide. It’s time for a change.

From assistive technology to portable and permanent wheelchair ramps, providing financial and employment services, parent training, advocacy and being a trusted resource, everything MI-UCP does, every day, is done to close that divide.

Examples of services include: a Representative Payee program to assist with financial matters; Benefits Counseling that help individuals navigate complicated systems like Social Security and Medicaid; Assistive Technology can be provided via grants to address needs in the areas of mobility, communication, learning, transportation, independent living and more. MI-UCP also provides Quick Ramps for Kids who are in need of an inexpensive, portable option for wheelchair accessibility.

More about MI-UCP

MI-UCP was founded in 1949 as United Cerebral Palsy Association of Metropolitan Detroit (UCP/Detroit). This included Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. That same year, United Cerebral Palsy Association of Michigan (UCP/Michigan) was formed to serve the needs of constituents throughout the remainder of the State of Michigan.

In 2020, these two organizations merged into MI-UCP (Michigan United Cerebral Palsy). The goal is to expand our scope of service reach. In reality, more than 65 percent of the people we serve have a disability other than cerebral palsy. These include autism, spinal cord injuries, intellectual disabilities, visual impairments and many other disabling conditions.

By unifying as MI-UCP, we are able to operate more efficiently and effectively as one of the state’s leading sources of information, referral and strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations. And by having offices in Detroit and Lansing, we can continue to be a leading advocate for all 1.4 million Michiganders with disabilities.

Multi-Platinum, Grammy Award-winning Band “Imagine Dragons” to Perform at KultureBall 2021

“Creating events that are sensory inclusive is a pillar on which we continually build and grow our sports and entertainment companies,” said Tony Khan, chief football strategy officer for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

KultureCity announced that multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning Band Imagine Dragons will perform at the highly anticipated KultureBall 2021 on Saturday, August 21.

KultureBall is a night of celebration to promote accessibility, acceptance and inclusion for those with sensory disabilities. The annual gala is an opportunity to support inclusion, learn more about KultureCity’s initiatives, and give back.

At this year’s gala, KultureCity will also honor an outstanding citizen for his or her work in the community, an organization for their commitment to inclusion, and a certified venue that has gone above and beyond to ensure inclusion for all. The event is scheduled to take in Birmingham, Alabama.

KultureCity is a forward-thinking company that creates inclusive and positive environments for individuals challenged with sensory disabilities. This year, KultureCity is thrilled to announce that the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation will serve as the title sponsor. The Jaguars Foundation, alongside the Jaguars, Fulham FC and AEW, are committed to ensuring that live events support sensory inclusion and acceptance for those with invisible disabilities.

“Creating events that are sensory inclusive is a pillar on which we continually build and grow our sports and entertainment companies,” said Tony Khan, chief football strategy officer for the Jacksonville Jaguars. “We’re proud that our partnership with KultureCity will help to ensure that all fans feel even more welcome and safe at our events. On behalf of the Jaguars, Fulham and AEW, it’s an honor to support the KultureBall and the example it sets for live events across the nation.”

“AEW and KultureCity organized the first sensory inclusive professional wrestling event in the history of the sport nearly two years ago at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas,” said Brandi Rhodes, Chief Brand Officer of AEW. “It was truly heartwarming to see and it marked the beginning of my relationship with the incredible folks at KultureCity. We’ve since partnered on numerous initiatives with AEW, and I look forward to continuing to champion their important and inspirational mission.”

Two members of the band, bassist Ben McKee and drummer Daniel Platzman, currently serve on the board of KultureCity. “My mother is a special education teacher, and growing up, I saw the gap in inclusion for those with sensory needs,” said Daniel Platzman. “Through Imagine Dragons, I’m able to advocate for inclusion and ensure venues around the world are moving in the right direction. We’re excited to perform at KultureBall and to support such a great cause!”

This will mark KultureCity’s seventh annual gala. To date, previous galas have raised more than $1.5 million for the mission. “It has been truly amazing to see KultureBall become what it is today,” Dr. Julian Maha, co-founder of KultureCity. “When we first started six years ago, we had 100 individuals attend and we raised funds to support families locally. Today, we are making an impact internationally, and thanks to Imagine Dragons, we will be able to impact several thousand lives.”

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to over stimulation and noise, which is an enormous part of the environment. Venues can obtain this certification to be better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible when attending any event.

Not only does the gala promote inclusion, it’s also the first sensory inclusive gala in the nation. Sensory bags will be available for attendees to check out during the event and KultureCity’s SAVE (sensory activation vehicle) will be available onsite to serve as a mobile sensory room.

With the health and safety of attendees in mind, tables will be physically distanced and grouped by travel parties. Health screenings will also occur upon entrance. Final protocols for the gala will reflect local and state requirements in place on the date of the event and be communicated to guests in advance of the gala.

For those interested in attending or sponsoring, please visit http://www.kultureball.com.

Melwood Endorses Critical Legislation to End the Subminimum Wage for People with Disabilities

“For people with disabilities, this is more than a financial issue, it’s a civil rights one,” said Melwood President & CEO, Larysa Kautz.

Melwood is proud to support the Transformation to Competitive Employment Act (H.R. 2373) introduced by Representatives Bobby Scott and Cathy McMorris Rodgers. The bill will finally end an 83-year-old discriminatory practice allowing employers to pay people with disabilities as little as $2.15 per hour while subjecting them to stressful and demoralizing time trials.

Melwood has been a champion for the elimination of the subminimum wage for many years and successfully advocated banning the practice in the State of Maryland. “For people with disabilities, this is more than a financial issue, it’s a civil rights one,” said Melwood President & CEO, Larysa Kautz. “On behalf of Melwood and our more than 1,600 employees across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., including nearly 1,000 employees with disabilities, I would like to express our support for this critical legislation.”

The existing subminimum wage law comes from Section 14(c) of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and was written at a time when lawmakers thought that people with disabilities couldn’t – or shouldn’t – work like any other employee. Today, people with all types of disabilities have proven that they have the same abilities, desires, and motivations to work and earn a paycheck as the rest of our community. “We just have to break down the barriers and ceilings that have been in place for a very long time,” said Kautz.

Melwood believes the continued practice of paying people with disabilities lower than minimum wage reinforces the discriminatory premise that a person with a disability is not capable of working and adding the same level of value to a job as a person without a disability. It is this bigotry of low expectations that foreshadows, and often directly causes, a life of poverty, segregation, and dependence on public support for the people that Melwood serves. Because of the continuation of this policy, an estimated 400,000 people with disabilities are currently treated as though the value of one hour of their time is worth less than the minimum value that we, as a society, have deemed for an hour of work for every other citizen.

Our collective goal should be to ensure that all people, regardless of race, gender, creed, religion, sexual orientation, or disability, have the same opportunities to live lives of their choosing in an inclusive community and workforce.

This legislation represents a thoughtful approach to ending the outdated and unfair practice of paying subminimum wages to workers with disabilities by not only phasing out Section 14(c), but also including funding to help states and providers transform business models to support individuals with disabilities while transitioning to competitive integrated employment.

Melwood thanks Representatives Bobby Scott and McMorris Rodgers for their leadership on this important issue of equity and inclusion.

About Melwood

Melwood is one of the largest employers of people with disabilities in the country, employing more than 1,600 workers – nearly 1,000 of whom have a disability– on over 60 competitive and integrated AbilityOne sites in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Melwood offers job placement, job training, life skills for independence, and support services to more than 2,500 people each year in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Melwood also has an inclusive summer camp program for children and provides support services to veterans and active-duty military members who have experienced service-related trauma or injury. National Braille Press’ First Braille Across America Challenge Raises over $137,000

“Not only did we exceed our initial goal many times over, which will help us put more books in the hands of blind children and adults, but it also displayed altruism from coast to coast,” said Joseph Quintanilla.

National Braille Press (NBP) announced today it has raised over $137,000 in the first ever Braille Across America run/walk/bike challenge to raise money for braille literacy across the country. Together, over 170 participants from coast-to-coast ran, walked and biked a total of 10,315 miles from March 17th which was, NBP’s 94th birthday, through April 19th, Patriot’s Day in Massachusetts.

“Our original fundraising goal was $26,000 and 2,620 miles and I am proud to say we far surpassed that at $137,000 and 10,315 miles,” said Brian Mac Donald, president of NBP. “Over the last month we asked supporters across the United States to come together to each log miles while raising money and awareness for braille literacy.”

Braille Across America teams worked together to raise vital funds needed to continue NBP’s braille literacy programs for blind children and adults which each member completed a distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) over the last month. Participants logged enough miles to virtually run, walk or bike coast-to-coast 2.5 times. Runner, walkers and bicyclers who participated in this challenge were from 32 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia. There was also a team who participated from Japan.

“Not only did we exceed our initial goal many times over, which will help us put more books in the hands of blind children and adults, but it also displayed altruism from coast to coast,” said Joseph Quintanilla, NBP VP of Development and Major Gifts, a runner who also led the team More Miles, More Money, More Braille. “Our Teams pushed themselves so that others can read. That’s the true meaning of volunteerism and in recognition of National Volunteer Week, that is why their efforts are so special.”
