BarrierBreak Launches the SAAS Accessibility Toolkit – a Guide to Implement Accessibility in SAAS Products

BarrierBreak, the leaders in offshore digital accessibility testing and consulting firm, launches the SAAS Accessibility Toolkit – a guide to implement accessibility in SAAS products. The toolkit has been launched marking the International Day of People with Disabilities 2021.

The Software as a Service (SAAS) market is growing rapidly, with over 20% of the Fortune 500 companies using software as a service. But what makes this market so unique? A competitive advantage that SAAS products have is their accessibility from any device, anywhere in the world.

As per the Global Market Report 2021, the SAAS market is expected to reach $436.9 billion in 2025 at a CAGR of 12.5%. Looking at trends in the market, it is clear that SAAS will continue to grow in popularity for business and start-ups.

However, most of the SAAS providers are unintentionally leaving out a segment of potential customers as they have not considered incorporating accessibility in their products.

More than 1 billion people worldwide have a disability of some kind and despite this, most SAAS products are not accessible to people with disabilities. This is a problem because disabled users can’t use these products at all or have to put a lot of effort into using them.

As a leader in offshore Digital Accessibility testing and consulting, BarrierBreak believes that technology creates a limitless future for people with disabilities by providing accessible solutions. And with this belief, we have launched the SAAS Accessibility Toolkit that would facilitate and support SAAS providers to incorporate accessibility in their solutions.

Having a good SAAS product doesn’t mean that your customers will procure it. For organizations focusing on Inclusion, the accessibility of your SAAS solution will be a key point in their decision making. Organizations today want to ensure they are promoting an inclusive culture and it would be plain wrong to discriminate against people with disabilities and deny them equal access.

The SAAS Accessibility toolkit aims to facilitate better understanding of how to implement accessibility and where to start. It will give you a roadmap to work towards and implement accessibility in your SAAS products in the most efficient manner.

“When building a SaaS product, you should always ask yourself whether your product is accessible to people with disabilities. If the answer is no, you have two options: either make it accessible or find a reason why it shouldn’t be. The SAAS accessibility Toolkit designed by BarrierBreak shines a light on the need for accessible SAAS solutions and scaling your business.” Shilpi Kapoor, CEO & Founder, BarrierBreak.

Why SAAS Accessibility Toolkit?

  • Better understanding of global accessibility drivers.
  • Helps you plan your accessibility roadmap and overcome the struggle of implementing accessibility.
  • Evaluate the competitive advantage of implementing accessibility.
  • Recognize the accessibility market potential and avoid negative brand positioning.
  • Helps you embed accessibility in your product development cycle and avoid legal consequences.

Download the SAAS Accessibility Toolkit and take your first step and guide towards accessibility and inclusion. Created with the input of people with disabilities and accessibility experts, this toolkit contains basic information, helpful tips in embedding accessibility into SAAS products and solutions.

iTherapy Releases InnerVoice Unreal App Powered by Epic Unreal Engine

InnerVoice Unreal was created using technology from Epic Unreal Engine.

Learn how to talk and express emotions by watching your animated avatar.

iTherapy, LLC just released an “Unreal” edutainment app for people with autism, funded by Epic Megagrant and powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine technology. In collaboration with Elara Systems, iTherapy has created InnerVoice Unreal a comprehensive communication tool that helps children with autism and other communication challenges learn speaking, reading, and writing skills, using their own customized 3D avatars and the latest voice-synthesis technology.

InnerVoice Unreal builds on iTherapy’s existing InnerVoice app for iOS, with both apps using video modeling — an evidence-based intervention tool for children with autism. An avatar models talking, typing, and facial expressions, and teaches children with or without autism to recognize the relationships between speech, text, and the world around them.

Thanks to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine platform, the new InnerVoice Unreal app for Android allows users to create their own unique 3D character. Kids can now choose from a variety of genders, cultural backgrounds, and looks — a significant addition when helping children identify with and maintain interest in their avatar. Importantly, Epic’s technology, Elara’s VR technology expertise, and InnerVoice’s 3D animation has also provided a whole new level of accuracy when it comes to the avatars’ word articulation and variety of micro-expressions when conveying an expanded range of emotions.

As Lois Jean Brady, co-creator or InnerVoice and speech-language pathologist explains, “This precision is crucial, as it means you can watch the avatar closely when it’s expressing anger or speaking a phrase you’ve typed — over and over if you want — in order to learn what that emotion looks like or how your mouth moves while saying the word.” The iTherapy team recognizes the need is greater than ever for developing children to have access to this sort of modeling, when so many teachers and speech-language pathologists have to obscure their faces with masks.

Literacy skills are also a huge asset to any child on the autism spectrum, and in a digital age, literacy can grant them access to a new world of communication for the rest of their life. InnerVoice Unreal provides a new literacy section, in which the child’s avatar demonstrates how to pronounce a large number of letter sounds (such as short vowels, long vowels, and consonants). Amazon’s cloud computing provides the cutting-edge speech-synthesis and procedural “lip syncing” necessary to ensure the sound syncs precisely with the animation, creating an authentic representation of speech.

Although InnerVoice Unreal is powered by sophisticated animation and AI technology, iTherapy has worked hard to ensure the app is simple to use and entertaining for kids of all age groups. Bright colours, bold graphics, numerous features, and endless scope for interaction mean that InnerVoice Unreal is both a communication tool and teacher, capable of keeping children occupied for hours of educational fun.

About iTherapy, LLC: iTherapy, LLC is a San Francisco Bay Area company that develops engaging immersive technology which increases quality of life for individuals with communication challenges such as autism. Since 2011, iTherapy has provided thousands of individuals with evidence-based solutions to everyday communication challenges, both through its innovative software and its medical speech therapy clinic, where its speech-language pathologists provide services to a variety of clients. iTherapy’s InnerVoice app has won multiple awards, including the Mensa Intellectual Benefits to Society Award.

About Epic Unreal Engine: The world’s most advanced real-time 3D creation tool for photoreal visuals and immersive experiences. For more than two decades, Unreal Engine has evolved to keep creators on the cutting edge of real-time 3D technology.

About Elara Systems: Based in Northern California, Elara is a strategic creative agency that develops digital content for medical and industrial markets across the globe, using virtual reality, mixed and augmented reality, 3D animation, and video.

The National Alliance for Caregiving Releases a New White Paper Analyzing the Existing Impact of Incentives on Caregiver Services

The paper discuses significant components that contribute to systemic setbacks, including specifics around variation in payment models, insurance coverages, health care settings and provider types.

In a new white paper, published by the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC), experts discuss incentives in the existing Medicare program that could motivate health systems and providers to offer more robust support to family caregivers. The paper specifically identifies barriers that prevent health systems and providers from providing new resources and offers innovative yet realistic solutions to help foster change. Constructed on extensive research and expert insight, NAC’s white paper informs providers, payers, and regulators, like The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), of the opportunities to reduce barriers and increase formal caregiver supports in the Medicare program.

Providing clarification into how specific barriers are currently hindering the expansion of caregiver services nationally, the paper covers both organizational and the systemic level obstacles. The paper discuses significant components that contribute to systemic setbacks, including specifics around variation in payment models, insurance coverages, health care settings and provider types. Additionally, on the organizational level, the paper discusses lack of standards of care, limited awareness of revenue opportunities, and poor accessibility of billing code information. Taken collectively, these qualitative factors present a unique cluster of challenges to caregivers and to those hoping to support them.

In healthcare settings across the country, caregivers are left out of consistent and crucial roles on their care-recipient’s health care team. The September 2021 RAISE Report to Congress supports a formal recognition of caregivers as members of the care team. Although the RAISE report has been widely accepted by Congress, the lack of incentives for supporting family caregivers in their role and in managing their own health continuously delay and hurt innovation initiatives. Navigating these complexities, emerging models of caregiver support already show promise for improving caregiver wellness, improving patient outcomes, and saving healthcare costs.

Although not widely publicized, exemplary models of care do exist. NAC takes time to highlight in the paper the importance of taking a closer look at models like the 4M Program at RUSH which demonstrates what caregiver support could look like and shows early promise of how patients, caregivers and health systems can benefit from caregiver services. The Rush Caregiver Health and Well-Being Initiative (Caregiver Initiative), funded by the RRF Foundation for Aging, compiles evidence-based practices into a unified framework to advance care needs for older adults and caregivers. Building on this research, the white paper specifies solution models incorporating patient-targeted and caregiver-targeted services

Made possible with support from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals and The Allergan Foundation, this analysis supports NAC’s work to identify cross-cutting solutions that will make life better for family caregivers.
