Tennis Legend Roscoe Tanner Set to Headline “Serve Challenge” Event on Saturday, November 11th

The event will also launch an innovative community impact serve challenge off the court for selective participants and teams. Participants will be incentivized to formulate and implement local community impact campaigns as a form of community service where most effective and impactful individuals will be awarded prizes. All proceeds from the “Serve Challenge” will benefit Watering Seeds’ mission to inspire and improve lives, while preventing suicide.

With the help of Tanner, a former tennis great, the event promises to be one to remember. Tanner has won 16 singles titles and 13 doubles titles in the Association of Tennis Professional Tour. In 1977, he won his first Grand Slam at The Australian Open, and in 1979 was a runner-up at Wimbledon, where he lost in 5-sets to Bjorn Borg. For several years, he was the doubles partner of the legendary Arthur Ashe. In 1979 he received the “Fair Play Award” from the United Nations. And at the height of his career, Roscoe Tanner was ranked number four in the world. Nicknamed “The Rocket” in the 1970’s, Roscoe held the fastest serve record at 153 mph for more than 25 years, before it was broken by Andy Roddick at 155 mph in 2004. In 2005, he published a confessional book, “Double Fault”, which detailed his rise to the pinnacle of the tennis world, and some of his human failings. The “Serve Challenge” is part of Roscoe’s mission to give back.

“We are blessed to have Roscoe participating at this Veterans’ Day event,” said Mazzola. “He is a proven champion and leader, both on and off the court.”

Mazzola, a former NCAA DI tennis player, was inspired to start Watering Seeds in 2004 after seeing a Paralympic wheelchair tennis exhibition held at UCLA and created a platform to make sports to be more accessible to the disabled.  Since WSO’s inception in 2005, Mazzola and his team have successfully hosted and produced numerous outreach events and campaigns that include military family picnics at Walter Reed Medical Center, live broadcast television concert specials to boost Military morale, benefit comedy and magic shows at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, numerous celebrity charity pre-Super Bowl Galas in host cities, the Wheelchair Super Bowl featuring Veterans and NFL Alumni, as well as “Skills on Wheels” adaptive sports clinics, competitions, and exhibitions around the country.

“We are committed as an organization to do all we can to provide education, equipment and training to those we serve,” said Mazzola. “The Serve Challenge event is a continuation of the work we do to generate support for our wounded veterans and challenged civilians.”

Currently, Mazzola helps to oversee the Fall Creek Tennis Academy in Humble, TX under his BAM! FiTennis coaching company, a high energy fusion of functional fitness and technical tennis training, that creates private and group programs with high quality instruction and hands-on training in a focused, fun, and productive learning environment. As a holistic high-performance coach with a mind, body, and spirit approach to wellness, he understands how to help others break through their limits to grow and maximize their full potential.

Third Annual Clark Shaw Memorial Prayer Walk Focuses on West Jackson Neighborhood

The gathering was a great representation of the late Clark Shaw’s vision for the prayer walk. Jeri Traylor, a program manager with the Salvation Army, was dressed for a funeral that day but she was determined to attend. “I’ll walk and pray for as long as I can,” Traylor said. “I’m praying for the restoration of the family, for human decency, acceptance and equality. We all need to go to God and ask him to fix our problems.”

Traylor was also there in memory of Shaw. “There wasn’t anything we couldn’t call on him for that he wouldn’t offer to help,” she said. “The Old Country Store has been a place for people in recovery, and he would give people our info, so it’s an honor to be here.”

Another participant, Jennifer Holmes, brought her 6-year-old golden retriever, Teddy, who was a superstar to everyone he met on that day. “If we do good for others, it comes full circle,” she said. “We have to be willing to walk the walk and talk the talk.” Holmes was inspired to help connect residents with people who can help meet their needs.

Charlotte Todd Leonard and her friend, Susan Davidson, carried white banners with “Jesus” written in large colorful letters. Leonard, who makes the banners, swung the banner from left to right, chopping the air as she prayed for safety and for the families of the area. The flag caught the attention of the young children playing outside on Rainbow Cove. When Leonard and Davidson asked the elder members of the Reid and Smith families if they could pray for them, they were blessed by the families’ powerful testimony.

“When you know the Man who died on the cross, I have a reason to praise God,” said Wavier Reid, a mother of six. “In 2014, one of my sons was shot. He was an innocent bystander, and he survived because God had another plan. Then in 2016 another one of my sons was killed, and my daughter died in 2018. I thank God that I don’t look like what I’ve been through.”

Leonard and Davidson were touched by her story. “We stopped to pray for them, and they ministered to us,” Leonard said.

As Leonard and Davidson walked from Rainbow Cove, they joined Rev. Clarence Currie of New Day Ministries, whose booming voice echoed at the intersection of Greenfield Drive and Old Hickory Boulevard. “Thank God for those that are standing in the circle with me today. We pray for the businesses. We pray for every single household, for every child that attends JacksonMadison County Schools — that they will not lack education or nutrition. We will leave no one out. We will pray for Roscoe the dog and Fluffy the cat,” Currie said.

The prayer walk culminated with a community cookout in Hartland’s apartment complex, with hamburgers, hotdogs, bounce houses and community resources being served to guests. The cookout was hosted by the Jackson Police Department. Members of the Jackson Fire Department also attended the community event.

Lue Murray said it was important to take part in the prayer walk. “I had to come out and be a part of the walk,” said Murray, who is a friend of Juanita Shaw, the widow of Clark Shaw. “Brooks is carrying on his father’s legacy. The Shaw family’s love for the community is genuine.”

Arlington Elementary counselors Aimee Evans and Judy LaFont spent time with their students at the prayer walk. “We love our kids, and we’re invested in them,” Evans said. “We’re not just in the school with them, but we also want to be a part of their lives.”

The prayer walk is named in honor of Clark Shaw, who died in November 2020 from COVID-19; it is part of the work to share his mission of praying for the city as a whole and bringing more people to Christ. Clark Shaw operated The Old Country Store, which was founded by his father, Brooks Shaw, in 1965, as a Southern-style buffet, gift and ice cream shoppe. The tourist destination that has fed and hosted millions of guests through the past six decades. Clark’s son, Brooks, is the third generation Shaw to run the business.

Open daily year-round (except for Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day), Brooks Shaw’s Old Country Store includes the restaurant, Miss Anne’s Ice Cream Shoppe, Miss Juanita’s Gift Shop and the Dixie Café Takeout or Dine-In at 56 Casey Jones Lane in Jackson, Tennessee. Old Country Store will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2025. Author Shares Faith-Filled Stories of Her Jewish Grandparents

“I felt compelled to share the story of my grandparent’s life, because I found it extremely inspiring,” said Leigh. “My grandfather passed away when my father was in his 20s and my grandmother passed away when I was a very small child, but I have the stories of them both that were passed down to us over time.”

Leigh begins her story in Seville, Spain, during the late 15th century, when her ancestors left because of persecution during the Spanish Inquisition. She follows them to Constantinople and then, finally, to Seattle. Here, she documents her grandparents’ efforts as they try to make ends meet, while raising their children to be strong and resourceful, and dedicated to their Jewish faith.

“My strongest talent is storytelling, and I love sharing stories from life, involving overcoming great challenges,” said Leigh. “It is my prayer that my writing endeavors will encourage all who read them to trust in a God who is powerful, faithful and good.”

Shine Global Announces ‘Name Me Lawand’ As Winner of 2nd Annual Children’s Resilience in Film Awards

“It is our true honor and pleasure to award Name Me Lawand the winner of this year’s Children’s Resilience in Film Awards,” said Susan MacLaury, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Shine Global. “The film exemplifies our mission – it gives a voice to the people who need it most and still manages to tell stories of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. We thank all of our finalists, and filmmakers telling important stories around the world, for their continued hard work.”

Name Me Lawand was awarded the grand prize of $15,000 at the Children’s Resilience in Film Awards ceremony on October 3, 2023, at Paramount Pictures, where filmmakers, industry professionals, and children’s rights advocates gathered to celebrate the remarkable achievements of all of the film finalists. The film was selected by a jury panel including Anita Chandra (Vice President and Director of RAND Social and Economic Well-Being and a Senior Policy Researcher at the RAND Corporation with a focus on childhood development), Tyler Coates (Awards Editor at The Hollywood Reporter), Jill Burkhart (VP of Unscripted Programming for MGM+), Greg Sorvig (Artistic Director for Heartland Film), and Brian Walker (CEO of Picture Motion).

“This award is for Lawand, for his bravery, his determination in getting his message out to the world. His message is a beautiful one – which guided the entire filmmaking process,” said Director Edward Lovelace in a written acceptance speech read by cinematographer Lol Crawley. “We as filmmakers have learned so much just by watching and listening to these young people who seem to have a wisdom on how to live, about how our planet should be. We need to all listen to the voices of tomorrow to stop us from growing old and unwise.”

The Short Film Prize winner, Ayenda, Directed by Marie Margolius (2023, United States, Portugal, Afghanistan) was previously announced at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival in June in partnership with Heartland Film with a $2,500 prize and the trophy was presented during the ceremony. The short documentary follows members of the Under-18 Afghan National Women’s Football Team as they attempt a daring evacuation from their homeland after the fall of their country to the Taliban.

This year’s nominees represented a diverse range of powerful stories from around the world, showcasing resilience in various forms. Through the lens of these films, audiences witness the inspiring spirit of children as they overcome obstacles, navigate through personal hardships, and inspire others through their achievements. In addition to Name Me Lawand, other finalists included Aurora’s Sunrise – Directed by Inna Sahakyan (2022, Armenia, Germany, Lithuania); Bigman – Directed by Camiel Schouwenaar (2022, The Netherlands, Germany); Children of Las Brisas – Directed by Marianela Maldonado (2022, Venezuela); and The Ordinaries – Directed by Sophie Linnenbaum (2022, Germany). The three other short film finalists were Barricade Directed by Alice Johannessen (2023, UK); Lunchbox directed by Anne Hu (2022, USA); and Translators Directed by Rudy Valdez (2023, USA).

In addition to the winning films, Shine Global highlighted three honorees making a difference: Margie Cohn, President of DreamWorks Animation, as the Titan Honoree, Former NFL Player and Founder and CEO of Project Transition Marcellus Wiley as the Children’s Champion Honoree, and Graceyn Hollingsworth, the voice of Gracie on Gracie’s Corner, as the Youth Activist Honoree. In her acceptance speech, Margie Cohn said, “I am beyond honored to be here tonight, being celebrated, especially considering the great work we have just seen and considering the great work that Shine Global does in turning a much-needed spotlight on underserved and at risk, but resilient kids all over the world.”

The winning film, Name Me Lawand, was also awarded the ReelAbilities Accessibility Award as part of the partnership between Shine Global and ReelAbilities Film Festival, the nation’s premier festival dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories, and artistic expressions of people with disabilities. The award includes the production of audio descriptions and captions for the film, and an invitation for the filmmakers to present the film in person in New York at the 16th Annual ReelAbilities Film Festival as well as the affiliate festivals program to screen around the world.
