The 12th Annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day returns Oct. 18, 2023 to Increase Recognition of Options with Education, Events and Fundraisers

Breast reconstruction is shown to improve patients’ psychological, social and sexual well-being along with improving their quality of life allowing them to regain a sense of normalcy. Patients deserve full and accurate information to empower them to make the best decisions for their bodies. BRA Day promotes educating patients on the full range of options available to them so they can reclaim their bodies in a way that best supports their goals.

“The objective is to get patients adjusting to a new body comfortable again in their clothes and skin in a way that best serves them,” said Dr. Howard Levinson, MD, President of The PSF. “The significance of BRA Day is to make sure patients have both awareness and access to all their options to make the most well-informed choice that serves their unique needs.”

BRA Day is a movement that seeks to reduce obstacles in public education, patient care and research. BRA Day events worldwide bring attention to the varied options and procedures available plus give information to patients and their supporters so they can make informed decisions about their care. The significance is to make clear the breast cancer loop to complete healing doesn’t close until a patient is aware of every option. BRA Day events are happening throughout the U.S. on October 18 both locally and nationally to raise money to support research plus inform patients, family, caregivers and media partners of the many choices available for comprehensive healing. ASPS and The PSF launched the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign and the annual BRA Day in 2011.

The BRA Campaign has raised approximately $115,552 through the support of Diamond sponsor Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, campaign sponsors CareCredit and Integra LifeSciences and the many regional and local events. These contributions to the National Fund support vital research, charitable giving and awareness grants.
The movement doesn’t end there. Other fundraising efforts include the CareCredit donation program, which will continue through the end of October. CareCredit will donate $1 to the Breast Reconstruction Awareness campaign every time a CareCredit cardholder purchases $200 or more on their card with an ASPS-member doctor in the CareCredit network during October.

Capping off the month of awareness and support, the Breast Reconstruction Awareness 5K will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 a.m. at Brush Square Park in Austin, TX during Plastic Surgery The Meeting 2023. Participants can choose to run in person, virtually or show their support with literally no sweat by fundraising. Learn more and sign up at: Run The Close The Loop 5K | Plastic Surgery The Meeting.

About Breast Reconstruction
Studies show that women who undergo breast reconstruction experience significant improvements in psychological, social and sexual well-being. Every patient deserves to learn about the full complement of breast reconstruction options at the time of diagnosis. In fact, the two main reasons women do not undergo breast reconstruction are that patients are not referred to breast reconstructive surgeons and are not informed of their reconstructive options. Breast reconstruction is part of a comprehensive approach and treatment for breast cancer patients.

Integral to this cohesive team approach, are frequent meetings that occur to discuss each patient and their individualized treatment plan. Members of this group of specialists are breast surgeons, plastic pathologists, reconstructive surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, geneticists, nurses, patient care coordinators and more. Their collective insights guarantee that patients are not only aware of but also have access to a full range of reconstructive procedures, with decisions based on consensus among the team and ultimately the patient.

“Women need choices – they should be presented with the complete range of breast reconstruction options,” said Lynn Damitz, MD, ASPS Board Vice President of Health Policy & Advocacy. “Shared decision-making is the optimal goal where we are all part of the decision.”

For more information on breast reconstruction, visit http://www.breastreconusa.org. Become educated and help educate others about the availability of and access to breast reconstruction and why all women deserve a team approach to breast cancer treatment.

Why Retailers Must Embrace the Multicultural Majority

Retailers must redefine the “general market” by adjusting data sets to remove outdated biases and to understand audiences more accurately.(3) Sticking to old definitions hurts businesses and consumers. The FDA-approved asthma medication albuterol is a prime example. Children with Puerto Rican or African American backgrounds are less responsive to the drug, which is used in inhalers. However, since the clinical trials lacked diversity, this shortcoming was not revealed until after approval. A lack of diversity in clinical research can have serious repercussions. In marketing, inclusivity and diversity offer invaluable insights that businesses likewise cannot afford to overlook.(4)

There are myriad approaches to diversity, but they are not interchangeable. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) programs can increase market share, drive customer loyalty, and attract top talent. A more diverse workforce will serve a multicultural audience more effectively.(5) However, while CSR and DEIB benefit brands and customers, they are not the same as multicultural and inclusive marketing.(6)

To embrace the new reality, organizations need to evolve their strategy to connect with people of all backgrounds. There are two marketing approaches businesses are utilizing to achieve this. Multicultural marketing involves segmenting an audience based on race, culture, or ethnicity and media planning and buying for that segment.

Inclusive marketing, on the other hand, reaches beyond cultural and racial segments to connect with customers based on transcendent fears, motivations, and desires — executed inclusively, segmenting audiences by factors that unite people rather than divide them.(7) Pulling off effective inclusive marketing and social commerce requires a deeper audience understanding. While first-party data can provide actionable feedback, it lacks context without a diverse team.

Data reveals significant diversity gaps as high as 600% in white color jobs across industries.8 Yet, diverse companies are 35% more likely to perform better, and diverse teams are 87% better at making decisions and 70% more likely to capture new markets.(9) To garner the benefits diversity brings to a business and a team, a corporation’s makeup should reflect the area’s population and the customer base.(8)

A few brands are leading the way as models of successful diverse and inclusive marketing and reaping the benefits of their advanced approach. Nike’s “Until We All Win” is one example. Others include Proctor & Gamble and Progressive, whose ads feature relatable and diverse people.(10)

Fullmoon Digital has long recognized the importance of having a diverse team to serve its clients effectively. Chew explains, “We are expanding, and that reflects how we engage with our clients. The diversity within our teams pushes us all to consider each other more and to consider different viewpoints. So many of our team are world travelers. We speak a lot of languages. Our first-hand experience is diversity drives growth and expands perspectives almost daily.”

National Leader in Early Childhood Education Launches New Brand and Transforms Former Prison into Landmark Child Care Center

“Few things have the power to redefine the community’s relationship with this historic place like the addition of high-quality childcare,” said Elm Street Development Vice President Jack Perkins, whose company is redeveloping cell blocks in the sprawling former complex. “Brynmor gives the old Lorton Prison a new identity.”

“This center flies in the face of a lot of conventional wisdom, and that’s the point of choosing this site,” said Evans Allvin, who started Brynmor in 2022 after nine years as CEO of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

“Conventional wisdom says you can’t simultaneously offer top-quality early childhood centers to families of all incomes, and pay highly qualified early childhood educators dignifying, livable wages,” Evans Allvin said. “Conventional wisdom also says you can’t convert a maximum-security prison unit into a child-friendly, high-quality child care center. The point of our brand is to demonstrate what’s possible for early childhood education.”

The center will begin operations October 16, eventually welcoming up to 156 children into two historic buildings. In place of two-story rows of cell blocks are light-filled rooms with vaulted ceilings and premium furnishings for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. A courtyard where inmates were once permitted outside for one hour a day now boasts a grassy play area with a cement tricycle racetrack, climbing logs, and a “mud kitchen.”

Civic leaders call the center’s opening a turning point, both for child care rebuilding from pandemic setbacks, and for the ongoing effort to evolve the D.C. suburb of Lorton from its lingering identity as a prison community to its current status as a thriving, diverse suburban community for federal employees, military families, and immigrant communities.

“I am pleased to welcome Brynmor to Liberty to provide much needed childcare within this new community,” said Fairfax County Supervisor Dan Storck, who has spent over a decade advocating for redevelopment of the property. “As a longtime supporter of lifelong learning, providing high-quality child care is just the beginning of that journey and is an excellent addition to the transformation of Liberty into a destination to live, work learn and play. This is a great day for our youngest Lorton residents.”

“The intentionality of the site location is brilliant,” said Marica Cox Mitchell, vice president of early childhood for the Bainum Family Foundation. “Putting best-in-industry child care in a community like Lorton, at a site like the old Lorton Prison, is a bold statement of purpose and prioritizes supporting families over separating families. Normalizing this level of quality and equitable access for families is core to the Bainum Family Foundation’s early childhood work. This is what families with young children want, and this is what early childhood educators have been asking for.”
