Rock The Street Wall Street Expands Programming to Toronto

Rock The Street, Wall Street offers racially diverse high school/secondary school girls additional opportunities to engage with math before proactively selecting university courses and ultimately, their career pursuits. Importantly, RTSWS alumnae earn degrees in finance, economics or related fields at 5x the rate of the average female university student. Additionally, the organization has recently announced a reimagined Alumnae & Career Center for students and alumnae as they continue through the RTSWS programs, navigating university and entering the financial industry pipeline.

With 25 years of Wall Street experience, Ms. Cunningham turned her attention to empowering the next generation. “STEM professions are exciting and purposeful, they can lift families to the next economic rung, bringing more influence, accountability and engagement for each participant.”

RTSWS works with select high schools, and school champions. Ingrid Montarras of Harbord Collegiate Institute, serves in this role for Toronto. An experienced bilingual Business Teacher and department head leading change, Ms. Montarras has a strong track record of innovative teaching with a demonstrated history of working in the secondary education industry in Ontario.

“I’m delighted to serve as the first Toronto RTSWS School Champion. Together with Rock The Street, Wall Street, we can establish lasting connections that will bring financial and investment math understanding to new heights for our secondary school girls,” stated Ms. Montarras. “We can create an indelible mark on the business and academic communities in Toronto – what a wonderful opportunity!”

In addition, Amy Miller, most recently Managing Director & Global Head of Loan Syndication with Scotiabank, serves as RTSWS’ inaugural Advisory Council Member focused on engagement in Toronto and RTSWS’ overall reach across Canada.

About Rock The Street, Wall Street: RTSWS is an innovative 501(c)3 nonprofit that brings the world of finance to high school girls, helping to provide financial and investment literacy before college and career selections are made. Aiming to increase girls’ interest in the financial industry, former Wall Street executive Maura Cunningham founded RTSWS. RTSWS has expanded internationally to bring STEM to young women in more than 60 high schools across 30+ cities within the US, UK and Canada. The programs leverage female leaders in the financial industry as volunteer instructors and mentors, as well as sponsoring firms. RTSWS helps students see themselves in key roles, expanding their reach and offering them social capital and a flight path into the M in STEM careers. RTSWS alumnae earn degrees in finance, economics or a related business field at a 5x the US national average for women in college.

Girls often opt away from STEM, math in particular, at young ages. With a female leader actively involved in teaching each program, RTSWS strives to strengthen technical and mathematical skills, teach financial lexicon and create solutions to overcome the gender gap in math and investing. Powerful investment firms’ leadership statistics repeatedly demonstrate a lack of gender diversity in the C-suite and as money managers. The nonprofit deploys technology and in-person training to improve diversity in talent slates, increases qualified candidates reflecting all aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and expands the talent pipeline for investment, technology and fintech firms.

Fintech Founder Bridges Gender Gap in STEM Through Mentor, Student Programs

“LIFT provides mentorship, guidance, and networking opportunities to women, empowering them to break through pre-conceived barriers and thrive in a traditionally male-dominated field. By fostering a supportive community, our infectious efforts help level perceptions and foster pathways for success,” says Eaton. “For those yet to enter the workforce, our Paid for Grades program continues to make a remarkable difference in the lives of young individuals, equipping them with the tools and resources they need to excel academically.”

For students, self-esteem is often tied to their ability to develop skills in areas such as math, spelling, and social relationships. According to the American Psychological Association, both confidence and competence play a part in how students approach learning and how they recover in the face of failure or adversity. Low self-esteem can lead to self-doubt, which can deter students from pursuing academic challenges and may manifest further into feelings of guilt, frustration, and social disengagement. Building self-esteem can be accomplished through personal or academic successes, even small ones.3 Paid for Grades, a nonprofit established by Eaton and backed by local Tampa Bay businesses, is a self-improvement initiative that aims to provide students with these academic successes.

In collaboration with the Pinellas Education Foundation, Paid for Grades strives to equip students with the skills and self-assurance necessary for academic and personal success. Founded in 2013, Paid for Grades was inspired by Eaton’s own experience as a COO of a rapidly expanding tech company. Eaton hired local high school students for entry-level positions but recognized that many lacked the confidence and essential skills necessary to perform their jobs. With this realization, Eaton set out to provide educators, administrators, and at-risk students with the resources needed to help them succeed, build confidence, and excel academically.

Paid for Grades offers high school students the opportunity to earn $500 in cash for meeting designated program goals, participating in workshops, and completing an online life skills course. This cash reward serves as a concrete motivation for students to stay engaged, which leads to increased confidence, better grades, and improved practical life skills.

This year, the program experienced its highest-ever participation, with students, educators, and schools receiving nearly $206,000 in donations and awards. Over 200 freshmen from three Pinellas County high schools received $500 each. Mentors were rewarded $400 each, and schools earned $100 per student for programs and supplies. Paid for Grades has seen hundreds of local students increase their GPA, make marked improvements in reading comprehension, and gain invaluable skills that foster a more confident, purpose-driven outlook beyond the classroom.

Initially funded entirely by Eaton’s company,Chargebacks911®, the program now enjoys generous support from Florida’s business leaders and philanthropists, 100% of which directly supports students and schools. To date, Paid for Grades has donated more than $1.2 million to participating students, mentors, and schools.

Eaton says, “Through LIFT and Paid for Grades, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of fintech leaders, fostering diversity, and driving positive change in the industry. By investing in the education, mentorship, and empowerment of youth and women, we are building a more inclusive and innovative future for fintech. Together, we can break down barriers and create limitless possibilities for all.”

Supply Chain Network Honors Exemplary Females Through 2023 Women in Supply Chain Award

“This year, we received over 400 submissions, the highest amount of applications not only for this award, but also for all of our awards. What’s more, 118 of those applications were submitted by male counterparts, nominating their boss, co-worker or associate,” says Marina Mayer, Editor-in-Chief of Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “Last year, that figure was just at 75. Also this year, 39 women self-nominated, a tremendous uptick from last year’s award, which just saw 12 self-nominations.

“This shows progress. This shows hope that one day, we won’t need an award like this because men and women in the supply chain will be equal. While there’s still more work to be done, what we’re doing is working. From truck drivers to CEOs, what these winners are doing matters to the future of all supply chains.”

Sarah Barnes-Humphrey, founder of Let’s Talk Supply Chain podcast and Blended Pledge project, both exclusive sponsors of the Women in Supply Chain award, adds, “Women have been making a significant impact in supply chain management, contributing to the growth and innovation of the supply chain industry. As more women join the supply chain workforce, they bring diverse perspectives that can help address complex supply chain problems and improve global supply chain operations. It is important that we empower, recognize and elevate these achievements through initiatives like the Women in Supply Chain award, as seen through the overwhelming response. Congratulations to all the winners, those who nominated others and the bravery of those who nominated themselves.”

Also new this year, two winners were named overall Women in Supply Chain winners.

First up, meet Tiffany Mensen, director, national accounts for CHEP, tasked with spearheading new programs and facilitating collaboration to produce a positive impact toward the company’s circular business model (share, repair and re-use pooled pallets and containers).

Also meet Debbie Yu, co-founder of ISEE.AI, responsible for positioning ISEE to become a leader in the $100 billion global autonomous yard truck market.

Both women exhibit innovation to make the supply chain space better, safer and more efficient; passion to collaborate, mentor and promote women in supply chain; and grace while taking on new challenges and moving the needle every day, in every facet of their jobs.

To view the full list of winners and learn more about the overall winners, visit: https://www.foodlogistics.com/awards/women-in-supply-chain

Furthermore, to properly celebrate these exemplary women, Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive are hosting the second annual in-person event — Women in Supply Chain Forum, designed to help supply chain professionals and industry experts learn, grow, network, and more.

The Women in Supply Chain Forum, which will take place Nov. 14-15 at the Hotel Colee in Atlanta, is tailored to both men and women in executive-level positions looking to expand their professional network, enhance their businesses through thought-provoking discussion panels and celebrate the women that are making a difference within the supply chain every day.

“Gender diversity continues to be top of mind for many of today’s supply chains,” Mayer says. “While the supply chain industry is excelling at incorporating more women in the supply chain, there’s still more work to be done. This forum was designed to provide that safe space to talk about the real problems and challenges impacting females across the logistics space.

“But, for me, it’s more than that. It’s about learning, networking, educating others, building relationships and learning how to lean on the community that is the supply chain industry. For me, this forum enables men and women to come together and get real about the realities of what’s challenging and presenting opportunities for companies in all facets of the logistics spectrum.”
