83% Of Brands Plan To Increase Their Investment in Women’s Sports Media in 2024

The stat-packed, 41-page report is available to download for free on Sports Innovation Lab’s website. This is the third annual report Sports Innovation Lab has released on the state of the women’s sports industry as part of its internationally acclaimed The Fan Project series.

“Since launching our first women’s sports report in 2021, The Fan Project, we’ve been using data to tell the industry why investing in women’s sports was a smart business decision,” said Angela Ruggiero, co-founder of Sports Innovation Lab. “This report is the how. It’s providing a blueprint to both maximize the ROI of a brand’s marketing investment in women’s sports, while at the same time breaking down barriers inhibiting the industry’s growth.”

In March 2023, Sports Innovation Lab formed the Women’s Sports Club powered by Ally to solve the issues preventing deal flow of women’s sports media inventory. Bringing active media buyers and sellers together at key sports industry events, the Club is responsible for facilitating a number of headline sponsorships that have occurred between the Club’s 300+ curated executives.

Researchers interviewed Women’s Sports Club members – including representatives from Fortune 500 brands across industries including, but not limited to, CPG, insurance, travel, and technology – and found:

  • On average, brands were spending 9% of their total sports media investment on women’s sports
  • Eighty-three percent of brands plan to increase their investment in women’s sports in 2024, but a majority (2/3rds) are targeting an increase of 10% or less

In further analysis, Sports Innovation Lab found three main barriers to prohibiting brands from investing more in women’s sports: Reach, Experience, and Discoverability.

  • Reach is being restrained by undesirable time slots, a lack of quality women’s sports content, and poor advertising inventory packaging. Despite this, fans of women’s sports are 20% more likely than fans of men’s sports to spend on sports streaming platforms
  • A lackluster in-person experience is holding back the potential of a fan market that is clearly hungry for live entertainment: 53% of fans of women’s sports paid for ticketed events in 2022 (compared to 38% of fans of men’s sports), and fans of women’s sports are about 3x more likely to spend toward live ticketing platforms than the general population
  • Discoverability is an issue as fans struggle to find where to watch their favorite teams and leagues, yet Roku shows what happens when platforms cater to women’s sports fans: Users of Roku’s women’s sports hub spent a median of 12.7x more hours streaming the 2023 FIFA World Cup vs. all Roku World Cup streamers

Sports Innovation Lab is hosting a live webinar on November 8th to provide a report read-through and data deep dive, which can be accessed by registering here.

Chicago Business Leader Accelerates Hispanic Professionals to Become Workplace Leaders in The Latino Leadership Playbook

According to a June 2023 Hispanic Executive article which cites information from the Society for Human Resources Management’s 2022 data, “less than 4 percent of executive-level positions are held by Hispanic employees.” Atilano explained that his mission is to cut into this representation gap with this book through showing Latinos to “work smart” in addition to “working hard.” This shift is what will tee up Latinos to compete in the workplace.

“The days of only focusing on your role, working hard, and “hoping to get promoted” are over,” he wrote in his book. “It’s now time to show up big and to swing big! It’s time to take bold action and for the new Latino/a leader to step up and show the real impact our community is ready to make!”

He addresses two areas: navigating culture scripts and developing leadership skills. Some topics include how people can advocate for themselves, respectfully challenge authority, earn the respect of their teams, become strong communicators and identify and leverage mentors and sponsors.

“Being where I am today would not have been possible without another senior Latina taking the time to guide and help shape me,” he said. “Now, it’s my turn to do the same. I wrote ‘The Latino Leadership Playbook’ out of a deep sense of responsibility. I wanted to remove the guesswork and provide a roadmap on what it takes to elevate your impact in the workplace. With this toolkit of expert advice, current and future generations will be prepared to enter a new era of Latino leadership.”

Atilano plans on launching a workbook as a companion to the book. For more information about the book, visit this link. For more information about Refugio Atilano, please visit http://www.refugioatilano.com.

About the Latino Leadership Playbook:
The Latino Leadership Playbook is a one-of-a-kind leadership accelerator for our professional community. The goal of the book is to flood the talent pipeline with confident, informed, high-impact, and promotion-ready Latino leaders – we now have the insights, framework, and expert advice from some of today’s most influential Latino & non-Latino business leaders needed to drive our careers forward for maximum leadership impact and potential. As Yai Vargas states, “This playbook is like having a number of different counselors, guides, and mentors in the palm of your hand—giving you diverse perspectives and expert advice that will get you at least where they have gotten and more importantly, further than you could ever imagine for yourself!”

About Refugio Atilano:
Refugio is a second-generation Mexican-American Latino born and raised in Chicago. He’s a first-generation graduate and business leader with vast experience working in many corporate environments for Fortune 500 companies.

Refugio’s passion is in developing Latino leaders for the current and future generations. He strongly believes in the importance and power of sharing knowledge to develop the collective leadership capabilities for all Latinos. Because Latinos are currently almost 20% of the population but only represent 4% of the seats in senior management roles, he is extremely passionate about using his experience and strategic network to develop tangible solutions to begin to close that gap!

Refugio strongly believes in the power and influence of the Latino community and is a strong advocate for our leadership potential. He is hyper-focused on developing our community’s leadership capabilities through The Latino Leadership Playbook, with more programming to come soon that will be targeting college and high school students so they can be set up for leadership success at an early age and are workplace-ready coming out of school.

Refugio’s brand is one of professionalism, determination, vision & execution, and exceptional relationships. He strongly believes that our natural Latino superpowers (i.e., problem solvers, passionate, and team players) will be a game-changer for the new Latino leader, and he is committed to showing how to bring those elements to life so that we begin to add unique impact as a professional community and set us up to be the new Latino leaders of tomorrow!

Heartland Forward Joins Mayor Jim Strickland & Coalition of Business Leaders to Release New Report on Black Entrepreneurship in Memphis, Tenn

  • Memphis has a density of Black-owned businesses, but they are disproportionate to the population size. Forty-six percent of the adult population in the Memphis metro is Black, but only 7.3% of employer firms are Black-owned – employer firms employ more than just the business owner herself, an indicator of entrepreneurship success.
  • Memphis is home to a large number of Black-owned nonemployer firms that, if supported, can reduce the employer firm disparity. There are 1,158 Black-owned employer firms in the Memphis metro, compared to 12,968 white-owned employer firms. There are 54,500 Black-owned nonemployer firms, compared to 57,000 white-owned nonemployer firms.
  • Business ownership creates positive externalities for personal wealth generation and communities. Fifty-nine percent of Black individuals whose main source of income is self-employment are homeowners, compared to 50% of Black individuals who work for someone else.
  • Inequities in resources exist, such as only 80% of Black owners of incorporated businesses have high-speed internet at home, compared to 90% of white owners of incorporated businesses.
  • Age can be a positive factor. The self-employment rate among those younger than 40 is 47% of the white rate, while the Black self-employment rate for those 40 and older is 60% of the white rate. Black individuals are able to overcome some of the barriers to entrepreneurship as they move through their careers.

The core components to a successful entrepreneurship journey include: technical assistance, funding and scaling and access to the broader professional community.

Informed by input from Black-business owners and community leaders through focus groups and informational interviews, the report makes the following public policy and programmatic recommendations:

  • Move material resources to fill the experimentation gap experienced by Black business owners so that entrepreneurs have the resources to test and develop products, services and business models.
  • Close the digital divide for small businesses: Black business owners faced unique challenges pivoting during the COVID-19 pandemic, largely due to that lack of access to high-speed internet and sufficient skills to properly utilize the technology.
  • Build bridges for Black business owners. Black business owners are isolated from opportunities and relationships to partner with white businesses, which limits their ability to scale and their exposure to innovation and mentorship.
  • Lessen dependence on necessity entrepreneurship through wealth and skill building: we estimate nearly 80% of Black business ownership are “side hustles.” Support services should better support the Black population in securing upward mobility so these side hustles ultimately are replaced by thriving incorporated businesses building their business by adding an employee base.

“The journey entrepreneurs embark upon is complex and nonlinear; it often involves multiple loops of starting, stopping and tweaking the business model before getting it right,” said Ross DeVol, president & CEO of Heartland Forward. “For underrepresented populations, entrepreneurship is exponentially more difficult. With the resources and commitment Memphis has to seeing its entrepreneurial sector grow, we are enthusiastic Memphis is on the right track. We thank our partners, the business community and Mayor Strickland for working with us on this comprehensive report that we expect will be a guide for communities across the country.”

Mayor Jim Strickland said: “It was our original goal to grow our supplier diversity numbers, begin working with external partners to serve more black businesses, and to change the dialogue on how we and the community can better support. This is where The 800 Initiative began with a multitude of great partnerships bringing resources to the region. We are happy now to see that this effort has produced a data report that will have cascading returns for years to come.”

Through our analysis of Black business in Memphis we have evaluated the key areas of support for Black entrepreneurs: technical assistance, funding and scaling and access to the broader professional community. By implementing programming and policy centered tailored technical assistance for Black businesses by stage of business development and industry, creating pathways for Black business owners to connect within and outside their communities and celebrating the achievements of thriving Black enterprises in the city, Memphis can foster the growth and empowerment of Black entrepreneurs and businesses.

With this report, Heartland Forward hopes to spread recognition of Black entrepreneurs and businesses across the country that experience similar trials and tribulations. The data collection and analysis methods used for this report can be applied to different cities, regions and communities, helping to identify the key areas cities need to focus on to develop programming and policy supporting and growing Black business and ultimately increasing racial economic equity in the United States.

The full report can be found HERE.
