National University Amplifies Support for Military-Connected Community with Employee Resource Groups

Strengthening Culture and Advocacy for Veteran and Military Spouse Faculty and Staff

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 26, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Founded over 50 years ago by a retired U.S. Navy Captain, National University(NU) is proud to announce the launch of two new Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) tailored to serve Military Spouses and Veterans. The introduction of these ERGs further enhances NU’s commitment to an inclusive educational community and underscores its support for its expansive military-affiliated employee community, benefiting the students they serve.

Military Spouse and Veterans ERGs reflect NU’s standing as a preferred employer for the military community and celebrate the invaluable skills, dedication, and leadership qualities that Veterans and their families contribute daily.

National University’s foundation is interwoven with military culture which has always promoted continual learning and professional growth, and our military ERGs further strengthen that bond,” said Danielle Maloy, military and veteran strategic manager at National University, where 50 percent of undergraduate students are active-duty military, Veterans, and dependents. “They offer an inclusive environment, ensuring that our military-connected employees feel valued, and in turn, we can serve the broader military community more effectively and authentically.”

While ERGs have been around since the 1960s, they have evolved significantly. Today’s ERGs are more than just groups—they are dynamic communities that bring together employees with mutual experiences and shared interests with a sustainable platform for future expansion.

“We honor the valuable skills and contributions that Veterans and military spouses bring to the professional workforce today and for the years to come,” remarked National University senior vice president of military and government affairs Meg O’Grady. “At National University, our connection to the military isn’t merely a point of pride. We are always evolving to support military-connected employees with a sense of belonging that empowers professional growth and elevates the experiences they provide our students.”

The nonprofit National University serves over 130,000 nontraditional learners, including working, diverse, and military students – 50,000 are degree-seeking, while 80,000 are workforce and professional development students seeking to upskill and advance their careers. National University’s Workforce Education Solutions (WES) team oversees the development of strategic partnerships with premier companies and federal and state organizations to serve those workforce and professional development learners. NU’s partnerships offer tailored educational programs for top employers, enhancing their workforce and talent development strategies.

Central to these efforts is the recognition and appreciation of the sacrifices made by Veterans and military spouses. Designed to offer tangible opportunities to those who have dedicated themselves to serving the nation, these initiatives operate in harmony with university ERGs.

“The fusion of our strategic partnerships and the vibrancy of our ERGs gives us deeper insights into supporting service-minded professionals. Whether they’re here at National University making a difference in students’ lives or working for our valued employer partners, we’re in this together,” shared Danielle Malloy. “Being a military spouse, I feel a deep sense of pride in the bridges we’re building and the support we’re providing to others who have similar journeys.”

Additionally, NU’s recently announced collaboration with PsychArmor and its engagement with Veteran and military-spouse ERGs highlight an enduring commitment to support military-affiliated learners, who comprise nearly a quarter of the student body. These initiatives place National University at the forefront of institutions that respond proactively to industry needs, emphasizing the importance of ongoing education for both professional and organizational growth.

About National University
National University, a veteran-founded nonprofit, has been dedicated to meeting the needs of hard-working adults by providing accessible, affordable higher education opportunities since 1971. Chicago Businessman Receives Successful Turnout for the Hispanic Leaders in Construction; Event part of the new Building Opportunities Series

Held recently at the Wintrust Financial offices in Rosemont, Calahorrano invited many representatives to participate in three panel groups:

  •     Women Entrepreneurs in Construction
  •     General Contractors – Developers
  •     Construction Design Professionals

“We had about 90 attendees that included attendees, panelists and invited guests,” he said. “Our speakers were very knowledgeable about their industry and shared their experiences, challenges, and insight and offered suggestions on how to have success in the industry.”

Calahorrano said the General Contractor/Developer panel shared current challenges the industry faces with financing, labor force, government regulations and current political changes. The Construction Design Professionals panel, composed of seasoned architects, provided insight on the planning and design changes as well as their take on the migrant situation and shortage of affordable housing.

He said the panel that resonated with audiences was hearing from the women construction business owners as they shared their stories arriving in their leadership positions, experiencing the successes and challenges of running their businesses, industry trends, and contributions to fostering the next generation of women in the workforce.

Estefania Roa, president of L.B. Hall Fireproofing and part of the Women in Construction panel, was grateful for Calahorrano’s invitation to be a panelist.

“The purpose of the talk was to share some inspiration, but what I truly took away was a reminder that, at the end of the day, persistence is what makes the difference,” she said. “Going back to my childhood and reminiscing about my roots was a beautiful experience. It reinforced that it doesn’t matter where we come from, but who we choose to become every day.”

He plans to build upon the series with 2024 events about clean, renewal energy, solar panels and electric vehicles tentatively scheduled for February and one on manufacturing in July.

“Our first event that we recently hosted focused and highlighted Latino contractors,” he said. “I wanted to highlight the panelists and showcase their knowledge, experience, challenges and accomplishments in the construction industry with the hope that it leads to more opportunities in a prime level. I was grateful for the participation, this being our first event.”

Calahorrano also thanked the following event sponsors and partners:

  •     Gold Sponsor: Chicago Voice & Data Authority
  •     Platinum Sponsor: JLDC Construction
  •     Silver Sponsor: Alera Group
  •     Bronze Sponsors: BEAR Construction Company, d’Escoto Inc., Illinois Tollway, Dimelo Media and Negocios Now
  •     Partners: City of Chicago Department of Procurement Services
  •     Chicago Transit Authority-CTA
  •     Capitol Development Board-CD
  •     Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago– MWRD
  •     A portion of the proceeds will go R.O.C.O-Rescue Our Children Organization, an organization that serves the undeserved children in the Chicagoland area

NutriSource® To Celebrate Opening of New Facility Dedicated to Training Service Dogs for Veterans and First Responders

The Spot will identify recipients for service dogs in collaboration with Soldier’s 6, a Minnesota-based non-profit that provides active-duty military members, honorably discharged veterans and first responders with specially trained K9s. Under the direction of former law enforcement officer and The Spot’s head trainer Mike Boehmer, The Spot is expected to train as many as 65 service dogs annually. There is no cost to recipients for their service dogs or training.

“We remain committed to making a difference,” said Charlie Nelson, CEO of KLN Family Brands, the parent company of NutriSource. “The Spot will train up dogs to do what they love to do and we know the companionship of a dog can literally save a life. We are also creating jobs and helping our veterans and first responders find a way out of the dark and into the light.”

“Our long-term aspiration is to have a number of these facilities around the country. The needs are staggering,” added Nelson.

General manager of The Spot, Chris Heikkila, is himself a veteran and a recipient of a service dog (K9 Leo) through the Soldier’s 6 program. “I suffer from multiple physical disabilities as well as diagnosed severe anxiety/panic attacks, depression, and PTS,” said Heikkila.

“For so long we have been conditioned to push these issues down deep and press on.  The reality is that it’s not always possible, and must be addressed eventually, to help heal and manage your mental health.  K9 Leo has provided support and companionship through some of life’s toughest days.  He has been a lifesaver who has helped me heal and persevere.”

In addition to the service dog training facility, The Spot will feature a retail area open to the public that will offer NutriSource Pet Food, treats and other pet items, 34 kennels with five executive dog suites, an area for cat boarding, pet daycare and three full-service grooming stations.

The Spot will host a grand opening celebration on Wednesday, November 1 from 3-5 pm at its location at 7600 69th Avenue North in Greenfield. The event will feature special appearances by facility dogs from the NutriSource Facility Dog Program at the M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital, former world champion boxer Caleb Truax, University of Minnesota women’s basketball player Mara Braun and other special guests. Food, prizes, and tours are available free of charge to attendees. The public is invited to attend.
