PAINWeekEnd in Milwaukee Offers CE/CME Education to Aid the Opioid Public Health Crisis

News Image

…I look forward to helping PAINWeekEnd attendees understand medical necessity for substance abuse treatment, drug testing, and prescribing controlled medications.

PAINWeekEnd on November 16 at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel, 375 S Moorland Road, in Brookfield, Wisconsin, will be a timely full day program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

Wisconsin is committed to saving lives and building healthy communities. “Data Direct: Opioids” was launched, providing the most-up-to-date information on Wisconsin’s opioid epidemic and to guide efforts, via the changes, trends, and behaviors, to save lives. In August, the Wisconsin Society of Addiction Medicine worked to increase treatment capacity by training more prescribers to be able to treat opioid use disorders with buprenorphine. How will these trainings and tools affect clinicians?

At PAINWeekEnd, Senior faculty member Jennifer Bolen, JD, founder of The Legal Side of Pain, Knoxville, Tennessee will present Embrace Changes and Prevent Overdose: A Basic Blueprint for Legal Risk Mitigation and Response. She observed, “As payer policies for treatment continue to evolve, it is important that providers take steps to stay current on the legal and regulatory environment that may affect their practice and their patients. To that end, I look forward to helping PAINWeekEnd attendees understand medical necessity for substance abuse treatment, drug testing, and prescribing controlled medications.” Attorney Bolen will also present Get Your Specimens in Order: Timely Use of Test Results.

Other courses to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Milwaukee include Nonopioid Analgesics: Antidepressants, Adjuvant Therapies, and Muscle Relaxants; Opioid Moderatism: Seeking Middle Ground; Reefer Madness Revisited; and Rational Polypharmacy. Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.

For more information about this or other regional conferences, and to register for $129, go to the https://www.painweek.org/conferences/painweekend/milwaukee-wi-saturday-111619/milwaukee-wi website. BONUS: PAINWeekEnd registrants may register for the 2020 PAINWeek National Conference, September 8-12, in Las Vegas, for $200 off the regular online published price.

Playonwords.com Presents Their Fall 2019 PAL Awards

News Image

You are a force for play (and toys and time with family that matter)! Thanks for all you do for our children.

Play On Words LLC, led by highly respected speech language pathologist Sherry Artemenko, announces 2019’s Fall PAL Award Winners, the toy industry’s only recognition directed by a credentialed speech-language expert recognizing the language learning edge in exceptional toys, games and media. Sherry’s 35 years of child development experience with over 17,000 hours working with kids empower her PAL selections, video reviews, popular blog, media appearances (NBC Connecticut, FOX News Milwaukee), and consulting practice.

I continue to be fascinated by the impact parents’ play with kids has on language development, a concept reinforced by recent research. What parents say and how they talk during play can make a difference. By simply using a strategy called “Toy Talk” where parents talk about the toys and give the toy a name, they up their grammatical models to their child and improve the growth trajectories of certain areas of their child’s language development. Toys are the tools for a child’s play which is why I’ve spent my career calling out the toys with the best language learning potential and coaching parents on how to play with their child to maximize learning.

Playonwords.com helps toy brands and consumers alike see the strategic value of language learning in play through its helping to build vocabulary, foster cooperation, express emotion, kindle creativity and expand descriptive and problem solving capacities. The PAL Award on the internet, packaging and in print media differentiates brands who know the marketplace now demands products that are not only fun, but also infused with learning potential. The gold seal with three smiley faces tells customers that more than great entertainment is to be found behind the box, book cover or app license.

EARLY DEVELOPMENT: Sherry’s experience in pediatric speech therapy has given her an eye for the best products to build attention, vocabulary and concepts through play, preparing children for their first sounds, words and sentences. While fishing in the bathtub for pop-up fish, opening and closing latches and doors to learn counting, vocabulary and colors, or playing a surprise game that grows bubbles on the back of a sneezing sheep, kids learn essential early language skills.

  • Friends of a Feather by Ravensburger
  • From Birth to First Words by Lynn Carson, Talking Together
  • Hape Double Fun Fishing Set
  • Latches & Doors Busy Board by VTech

READING AND WRITING: Building with letter blocks that access an electronic cube to teach pre-literacy skills, seeing your name repeated in print throughout a fun personalized book, or exploring the human body with an interactive video stylus that captures the workings inside, all help children pick up essential skills to advance reading and writing.

  • Language Together Set 2
  • LeapBuilders ABC Smart House by LeapFrog

LANGUAGE STRUCTURE, CRITICAL THINKING AND REASONING: These outstanding products can build language structure, critical thinking and reasoning, often teaching vocabulary, concepts or grammar while delivering fun. Chase the eagle across the map of the United States, learning critical facts about parks, monuments and historical places while relating your own experiences, or put on your chemist cap and experiment with arctic options to make a chill thermometer, cold lava or glistening snow slime, analyzing and recording your findings to strengthen communication skills.

STORY-TELLING / PRETEND PLAY: Whether piloting a mighty jet command center to come to the rescue, captaining a pirate ship while loading the cannon or walking the plank, or serving up a tempting treat in a play kitchen with sink, range, oven and chalkboard to write your menu, children enter the world of pretend, creating their own stories with plenty of flexible props to guide their imagination. Oral story-telling precedes writing as kids learn the steps to create a good narrative.

SOCIAL LANGUAGE: Complementary to pretend play, social language blossoms when children play with toys and games and interact with media that encourage extended social interactions. Matching and identifying facial expressions to start the conversation about our own emotions and situations that sparked those feelings, or teaching a pretend plush friend how to be kind, brave, and help others, can equip kids to better name, understand and manage their emotions, leading to stronger EQ’s.

Looking to improve the organization’s productivity, quality and regulatory success? SOPs are key.

Most regulatory citations are related to procedures. And procedures account for more than 40% of human error events in manufacturing. By improving SOPs, one will minimize both human error and regulatory citations.

How does one go about it?

Human Error Solutions’ CEO, Ginette Collazo, Ph.D. — an industrial-organizational psychologist and one of the world’s few human error reduction experts — will explain:

  • How to prepare an outline and develop world-class SOPs
  • The interrelationship between SOPs, quality and regulatory compliance
  • Why human error is a root cause for lack of quality and how to minimize it
  • Common mistakes and causes of human error
  • How to create and maintain a procedure that minimizes human error
  • Good procedure writing practices: terminology, formats, layouts, mixed cases, steps content, familiar words, references, branching, conditional steps and the use of precautions, warnings and cautions
  • Use of electronic information networks for procedural access

While human error may never be eliminated completely, one will come away with clear guidance to help have SOPs that minimize such issues to avoid human error events and regulatory citations.

Thought Technology to Exhibit at AASP Conference – Oct. 23-26, 2019 in Portland, OR

peak performance, physiology

Imagine if you could measure the effect negative thoughts and emotions have on an athlete’s physiology, then be able to alter that effect.

It has long been the practice that training programs for elite and professional athletes include a mental component designed to keep athletes “in the zone” in order to deliver their best performance. But, how do you know when you’re there? Imagine if you could measure the effect negative thoughts and emotions have on an athlete’s physiology, then be able to alter that effect.

Thought Technology’s peak performance physiology training product line involves the use of equipment that monitors a variety of physiological signals and feeds this information back to a computer where the data is displayed in real time. Athletes can see how their body reacts to emotions and stress and can learn how to control these reactions thereby reducing the effect they have on performance. During training, athletes learn to achieve a state of optimal focus and control and, more importantly, learn how to access that state when they need to.

A leader in the field, Thought Technology’s instrumentation has a long history of use by top tier football clubs, as well as by individuals and teams around the world for peak performance training in sports such as tennis, hockey, baseball, skating, skiing and F1 racing. The company was recently invited to attend the Fifth Edition of the exclusive Aspire Academy Global Summit on Football Performance & Science in Doha, Qatar where its representatives had the opportunity to highlight the many benefits of using its physiological monitoring systems for peak performance training.

Visit Thought Technology at AASP booth #2 and have the opportunity to meet Lucas Borgo, Peak Performance Product Manager, who will be demonstrating how its instrumentation delivers anxiety response control, mental acuity and fast recovery – all critical tools in top level athletic performance.

About the AASP Conference

PAINWeekEnd in Seattle Offers CE/CME Education to Meet the Challenges of Opioid Prescribing Regulations

News Image

As payer policies for treatment continue to evolve, it is important that providers take steps to stay current on the legal and regulatory environment that may affect their practice and their patients

PAINWeekEnd on November 9 at the Grand Hyatt, 721 Pine Street in Seattle, Washington, will be a timely full day program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

Earlier this year, acting on a legislative mandate, the Washington State Medical Commission concluded a public comment and hearing process on proposed changes to the state’s opioid prescribing requirements for physicians and physician assistants. In a communication to its membership, the Washington State Medical Association sought support for its position that “…the WSMA remains concerned about the volume of administrative burden and liability these rules would place on physicians and physician assistants during the limited context of a patient encounter and the resulting impact on access to appropriate care. Senior faculty member Jennifer Bolen, JD, founder of The Legal Side of Pain, in Knoxville, Tennessee is a presenter. She observed, “As payer policies for treatment continue to evolve, it is important that providers take steps to stay current on the legal and regulatory environment that may affect their practice and their patients. To that end, I look forward to helping PAINWeekEnd attendees understand medical necessity for substance abuse treatment, drug testing, and prescribing controlled medications.” Attorney Bolen will present two courses at PAINWeekEnd: Get Your Specimens in Order: Timely Use of Test Results, and Embrace Changes and Prevent Overdose: A Basic Blueprint for Legal Risk Mitigation and Response.

Other courses to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Seattle include Nonopioid Analgesics: Antidepressants, Adjuvant Therapies, and Muscle Relaxants; Urine Drug Testing: A Patient Centered Approach; Cannabis vs Cannabinoids: The Politics of Medical Marijuana; and Rational Polypharmacy. Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.

Twiggy Bean, Ph.D., announces the release of ‘Divorce Bullying: An Epidemic’

News Image

Twiggy Bean, Ph.D., wanted to educate others about the divorce bullying epidemic so that it may help those suffering in embittered divorce battles make better decisions and become truly child focused. This objective prompted her to write “Divorce Bullying: An Epidemic – Divorce Bullying—How to overcome a bully, be resilient, and STOP the cycle! Don’t be a divorce bully!” (published by Balboa Press), a guidebook that serves as a blueprint for preventing and responding to divorce bullying.

Filled with case studies, diagrams, and easy-to-follow steps, the book shares strategies to prevent and respond to what has become a bullying epidemic. Drawing on her own experiences as well as those of individuals she has helped, Bean teaches readers how to identify a divorce bully before their behavior gets out of hand, fight divorce bullying when it occurs, protect children and loved ones from a divorce bully and prevent from becoming a divorce bully themselves. She also explains that not all divorce bullies were bullies while married. Sometimes, bullying can take place for the first time during a divorce, which can make recognizing it a challenge.

“I’ve mediated divorces for more than nine years, teaching anger management and domestic violence classes to perpetrators and victims, teaching cooperative parenting and divorce classes, and conducting workplace bullying research for my dissertation. I have listened to hundreds of real-life stories and witnessed the hurt and sadness that causes the divorce epidemic to be harder than it has to be,” Bean says. “Whether you are a judge, guardian ad litem, attorney, mother, father or family member who is merely caught in the mess, please read this book with an open mind and an open heart.”

Bean hopes that by sharing these real-life stories in the book, someone will become stronger, make a better decision or become kinder and gentler during one of the most painful processes most people will ever experience. For more details about the book, please visit https://www.amazon.com/Divorce-Bullying-Epidemic-Bullying-How-resilient/dp/1982200138.

Unique take on depression has people feeling good—about feeling bad

https://www.prweb.com/

Book cover for THE INVENTION OF EVERYTHING: Insights on Life, Food, and one good Thermos.

“Being a part of those around us is the agreement you sign when you join the human race.”

“It was very unexpected,” says author Everett De Morier. “This article took on a life of its own.”

Everett De Morier is a humorist and award-winning author who, for the past three years, has been editor-in-chief of 543 Magazine. And this week, De Morier posted an article about depression in middle-aged people.

“I mean, the piece was a lot more personal than I like to get,” said De Morier. “I had to admit some things that I was struggling with, but overall I expected it to be read by the same amount of readers as all the other articles.”

543 Magazine has a solid number of loyal readers and even had its best-of articles turned into a book called The Invention of Everything: Insights on Life, Food, and One Good Thermos, published in 2018 by Blydyn Square Books. 543 Magazine also produced the 2018 documentary Binghamton: Valley of Creativity.

But the reaction to the article entitled “The Depression Agreement” was completely unexpected.

De Morier said, “The website had a small number of direct comments to the articles. People don’t usually comment on the site; they share on social media. But shortly after the article went live, my email exploded.”

In two days, “The Depression Agreement” received five times as many comments as the entire website had garnered in over three years. All of them were extremely positive.

“I guess it shows how important a topic depression is, but more importantly I think people responded to the fact that depression is a kind of a selfish act and we need to change that. And we do that be staying involved with those around us which leads to us actually feeling sort of good about feeling bad.”

National ADHD Expert, Psychiatrist and New York Times best-selling Author Dr. Edward Hallowell Praises New ADHD Memoir by Dr. Katherine Quie, “Raising Will”

News Image

“I would never have ‘gotten it’ had it not been for my son, Will.” Katherine Quie

ADHD memoir, “Raising Will: Surviving the Brilliance and Blues of ADHD,” by Dr. Katherine Quie is receiving national attention for its candor, real-life advice and wisdom. In fact, psychiatrist Edward Hallowell, known for his groundbreaking work on ADHD and its treatment, as well as 15 popular books on the subject, such as “Driven to Distraction” has described it in the following way:

“This memoir, this beautiful rendition of a life as it was lived by a family, is the real deal. Read it. Laugh, cry, learn, fly. Let this lovely, magical mother lead you into the lovely, magical worlds her son creates as they, together, discover the super-power embedded in the condition so misleadingly and inaccurately called ADHD. Not a deficit-disorder at all if managed properly, this fascinating condition can open new worlds for those who have it and help them open new worlds for the rest of humankind, which it has been doing for thousands of years. Bravo Katherine Quie!”

The review echoes similar feedback from a growing network of professionals, parents, ADHD experts and bloggers who write online about the struggles and surprising blessings of handling what can be a potentially devastating diagnosis for children and adults.

According to the Center for Disease Control, up to 6.1 million children and teens 4-17 have already been diagnosed with Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as of 2016. The real number of those affected is thought to be much higher, as only 20% or fewer of those suspected of having the disorder are brought to professionals for treatment. The experience of untreated ADHD can create severe disruptions to functioning in school, home and with peers, leading to statistically higher rates of under earning, depression, anxiety and even substance abuse among adults with untreated ADHD.

Dr. Quie, in her heartfelt, humble book, explores all these issues, as she chronicles her son Will’s journey through the disorder and into healing. Today, a college student at Oberlin College and Conservatory and blues musician, her son ultimately was able to meet the challenges of the diagnosis through medical intervention, sensitive parenting and his own self-awareness, although it’s an ongoing process. As Dr. Quie shares in her memoir, ADHD presented a significant and all-encompassing challenge for her and her family, both professionally and personally.

“It is my hope that through this book readers will come away with a greater respect for the impact a diagnosis, like ADHD, can have on a child, teen, and the entire family unit,” says Dr. Quie. “I never would have ‘gotten it’, even with my years of clinical training and experience, had it not been for my son, Will.”

Dr. Quie is in conversation with Dr. Hallowell and other ADHD experts throughout the country about ways to further promote the message of hope, and provide education and resources for those impacted by ADHD. She has shared about “Raising Will” on Dr. Hallowell’s podcast, Distraction, and will notify her readers as soon as it airs. She is also writing blogs and articles for national organizations, like ADDitude and Attention Magazine. Her event schedule, blogs and contact information for concerned parents and interested professionals are available on her website https://kqadhdandu.com.

New Company Launches Innovative Breathwork Training Programs

Breath Control Opening Today

Breath Control

The breath is the horse and the mind is the rider.

Today, Breath Control launches their new business and innovate website (https://www.breathcontrol.ca) providing professional Breath training and therapy services for the general public, professional athletes, first responders and military personnel.

Founder of Breath Control, Tyler Huston, is a leading figure and pioneer for Breathwork across Canada and internationally. Tyler is a First Responder Paramedic; Addictions Nurse with specialized training in respiratory therapy and also a competitive athlete and coach. Tyler is trained in The Oxygen Advantage Method and is British Columbia’s first and only Certified Breatheology Instructor’s out of only a handful across North America. Tyler has collaborated with Physicians, Coaches, Counsellors, Navy SEALS, Veterans, Police Officers, Olympic medalists, Firefighters, CEO’s, Parents, Grandparents and Children to develop a sophisticated yet approachable complete breathing system – Breath Control. Tyler has spent years working with clients from all walks of life including Canadian Forces, Professional Athletes, Corporate Executives and First Responders in the community and private and clinical settings including several of Canada’s premier Addiction Rehabilitation Treatment Centers.

The specific breathing exercises are comprised of evidence-based scientifically proven principles, exercises and techniques from numerous methodologies to form one unique comprehensive program.

Breath Control is based upon three main pillars:

  • Biochemistry and composition of the blood
  • Biomechanics of ventilation and functional breathing patterns
  • Psychology and motivational techniques

Breath Control is heavily influenced by scientifically proven Western medical science and psychotherapy techniques while incorporating elements of ancient Eastern practices and philosophies. The Breath Control method is a somatic based therapy that strengthens the coordination between the respiratory system and the nervous system.

Through breathwork, a link can be created between body and mind that enables a person to control stress, increase energy, increase physical and mental performance, alleviate pain, improve health and enhance happiness.

“The breath is the horse and the mind is the rider.”

The average person will breathe 20,000-30,000 times each day and most only utilize 60%-70% of each breath. We waste up to 40% of the body’s main energy supply by inefficient, dysfunctional breathing patterns.

“How we breathe is how we feel, how we breathe is how we live. If we are not breathing fully how can we expect to feel good, feel complete and experience life to it’s fullest.”

Breathing is our #1 source of energy; arguably more important than food or water, yet the breath is often over-looked. Attention to nutrition and hydration is obviously critical to maintaining optimal health but emphasis on breathing should be the paramount priority.

Functional breathing techniques cleanse your body of unwanted waste products, the lungs are strengthened and the immune system is harmonized. Thoughts calm down which enables control over stress levels, pulse is lowered and more energy is acquired to improve resilience and allow clients to reach their full potential. Breath Control training can help clients achieve this in everyday life, while recovering from illness or injuries, at home, at work, for sport performance or in the line of duty. (https://www.breathcontrol.ca/begin-breathing/)

Breath Control training and programming is offered in a variety of different formats and platforms to accommodate and suit their client’s unique lifestyle including:

  • Live Online Individual Training
  • In-Person Private Sessions
  • Workshops and Clinics
  • Retreats

Prices vary from case-to-case as every program is tailored from the ground up based on the requirements of each client. Visit the Breath Control website to view, inquire and register.
