Perfect Little Women – New Study Looks At The Pervasive Effects of The Perceived Need to be Flawless

Many women still feel pressured to be perfect, whether that perceived pressure comes from themselves, family, or society.

Even though most women know deep down that perfection is unattainable, they still strive for it.

More than half of the women in our study still worry about what other people think of them, loved ones and strangers alike.

International Women’s Day is a celebration of the societal barriers that women have fought long, and fought hard, to break down. Simone de Beauvoir dared to challenge the patriarchy’s belief of a woman’s role, and rights, in society. Frida Kahlo spurred conversation on forbidden topics through her artwork. Mary Church Terrel wasn’t just one of the first African American women to earn a college degree, she was also a strong advocate for women’s right to vote. In spite of the progress women have made in the fight for equality, research from Queendom reveals that many still feel they are not enough … they believe that in order to be loved, respected and accepted, they need to be better, look better, do more, be more, give more.

Analyzing data from nearly 1,000 women who took the Perfectionism Test, data from Queendom’s study indicate that Gen Z girls and Gen Y women feel the most pressure to be perfect. This perceived pressure is less prominent in Gen Xers and Baby Boomers, but still present. Here’s what Queendom’s data revealed:

WOMEN TEND TO SET EXCESSIVELY HIGH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR THEMSELVES

  •      Gen Z: 44%
  •      Gen Y: 41%
  •      Gen X: 37%
  •      BBs: 32%

> They are afraid of being criticized if they mess up.

  •      Gen Z: 54%
  •      Gen Y: 43%
  •      Gen X: 37%
  •      BBs: 16%

> They have trouble saying no to requests because they don’t want to let people down.

  •      Gen Z: 55%
  •      Gen Y: 60%
  •      Gen X: 54%
  •      BBs: 18%

WOMEN FEEL PRESSURE FROM SOCIETY TO BE PERFECT

> The thought of being considered “average” terrifies them.

  •      Gen Z: 60%
  •      Gen Y: 56%
  •      Gen X: 58%
  •      BBs: 40%

  •      BBs: 40%

“Even though most women know deep down that perfection is unattainable, they still strive for it,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests, the parent company of Queendom. “It’s that duality that causes so much heartache; that constant battle between the woman they want to be, and the woman they feel they need to be. For example, the vast majority of the women in our study said that they are proud of their achievements. Yet, more than half of them still worry about what other people think of them, loved ones and strangers alike. On the one hand, I believe we have come very far in terms of shattering beauty and gender role stereotypes, and making women feel more comfortable with who they are. On the other hand, so many women are still ridden by self-doubt and a need for external validation, still struggle with self-esteem issues and imposter syndrome, and still feel that self-love is selfish and egotistical.”

Why do so many women still feel like they’re not good enough?

“Because this concept of the ‘ideal woman’ still floats around on social media, on television, and in movies – and it’s a moving target. One day, women should be thin, blond influencers. The next day they should emulate the pony-tailed perfect mom who always makes healthy snacks, or the curvy, career-oriented woman. So it’s a constant everyday pressure women put on themselves to be everything to everyone. However, while it is true that women are bombarded with the unrealistic messages about the ideal female, we are as guilty, if not more, of imposing impossible standards on ourselves. We are not helpless victims. We have a voice. We can step into our power without blaming our lack of self-love on society. We can take responsibility for our own happiness – and taming our perfectionism is a great step in the right direction. My hope for women on March 8th is for them to choose to be who they want to be, and to do what their heart calls them to do – and not give a damn about what anyone else thinks.”

Kalamazoo Valley Community College Signs Transfer Agreements with 25 Michigan Universities

“This agreement gives students more options and ensures a seamless transition – saving them both time and money, ” said Dr. Peter Linden, provost and vice president for instruction and student services for Kalamazoo Valley Community College

Transferring to a four-year college or university from Kalamazoo Valley Community College will now be even simpler thanks to new transfer agreements signed with 25 Michigan colleges and universities.

“I’m thrilled to see this agreement come to fruition,” said Dr. Peter Linden, provost and vice president for instruction and student services for Kalamazoo Valley Community College. “More than 50 percent Kalamazoo Valley students transfer to a four-year institution after goal completion at Kalamazoo Valley. This agreement gives students more options and ensures a seamless transition – saving them both time and money.”

Transfer agreements will allow Kalamazoo Valley students to transfer more credits to four-year schools in the areas of biology, business, criminal justice and psychology. The new agreements specify major-specific courses that students should complete while enrolled at Kalamazoo Valley Community College that are common across all institutions in Michigan. The identification of these courses makes it easier for students to complete essential courses before deciding where to transfer.

Kalamazoo Valley advisors and counselors now have details available for students about which courses they should complete and how those courses apply to degree programs at the participating universities.

“Transferring from community college to a four-year college or university is more common than ever,” said Erica Lee Orians, executive director of the Michigan Center for Student Success at the Michigan Community College Association. “Our community colleges want to ensure that students receive credit for the courses they have completed when they take the next step in their education.”

The initiative was funded through the Fiscal Year 2018 state budget which included a one-time appropriation to support this initiative, the redesigned Michigan Transfer Network at http://www.mitransfer.org, work to build stronger math pathways, and efforts to award credit for military experience.

A study conducted by the National Student Clearinghouse found that 52 percent of bachelor’s degree earners in Michigan previously enrolled at a community college, which is higher than the national average of 49 percent.

The Michigan Center for Student Success is leading the statewide initiative for the MCCA in partnership with the Michigan Association of State Universities and the Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities. The project continues through fall 2020 and Kalamazoo Valley is working to complete additional agreements in other academic program areas.

Agricultural Adoption and Behavioral Economics: Bridging the Gap

News Image

Researchers in behavioral economics use insights from psychology and economics to understand how and why people make certain decisions. Their approaches are starting to influence policies in agriculture.

In the new article published in the Applied Economic Perspectives & Policy, “Agricultural Adoption and Behavioral Economics: Bridging the Gap,” the authors dig into the linkages between research on agricultural technology adoption and behavioral economics. They also highlight three specific opportunities to join these research perspectives to inform evidence-based decision making and policy.

One of the authors, Leah Palm-Forster from the University of Delaware, says, “We felt that there were real opportunities to bring together the two research areas, on behavioral economics and the behavior of farmers, to explore their overlap and to look at key areas where the two bodies of research could enrich each other. We hope this can help make agricultural programs and policies more effective.”

The full team of authors includes AAEA members Nadia Streletskaya (Oregon State University), Samuel Bell (Oregon State University), Maik Kecinski (University of Delaware), Tongzhe Li (University of Windsor), Simanti Banerjee (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), Leah Palm‐Forster (University of Delaware), and David Pannell (University of Western Australia).

Segal Trials Screens its First Patient in a study of Psilocybin for Major Depressive Disorder

News Image

“Earlier studies of psilocybin and MDD are very encouraging where psilocybin seems to exert effect by a novel fast acting mechanism. I’m very excited to Investigate psilocybin in a clinical trial setting.”Dr. Rishi Kakar

Segal Trials, a privately held network of research sites throughout South Florida and South Carolina conducting Phase I-IV trials, is excited to announce the screening of its first patient for a Phase 2 clinical trial (Usona PSIL201) investigating the safety and efficacy of psilocybin for major depressive disorder (MDD).

Dr. Rishi Kakar and his clinical research team, at Segal Trials, at our West Broward Outpatient site will be spearheading this trial for the organization. The Usona study will use a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled design to evaluate the potential antidepressant effects of a single dose of psilocybin in patients with MDD.

The Usona Institute received Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the FDA for the use of psilocybin in the treatment of major depressive disorder. There are over 17 million people in the United States who suffer from major depression, and this breakthrough designation is important as it addresses an unmet need and offers another option that may allow a clinically significant improvement over other therapies on the market.

Data suggest that psilocybin may have behavioral effects relevant to the treatment of depression and recent studies also suggest that psilocybin may possess antidepressant properties. To further assess the effects of psilocybin on MDD signs and symptoms, this trial will assess the safety and efficacy of psilocybin on 80 individuals suffering from MDD at seven sites within the US. Dr. Kakar, of Segal Trials, is proud to be one of these sites, exploring this new breakthrough treatment for depression.

How to Deploy Root Cause & CAPA to Minimize Human Error

An FDAnews Webinar

Wednesday, March 4, 2020, 1:00-2:30 p.m. EST

https://www.fdanews.com/minhumanerror

Do employees fail because of process weaknesses that set them up for failure from the start? Does ones procedures provide necessary information and clearly indicate critical steps, along with warnings or cautions associated with the steps? Does ones systems work for manufacturing or the other way around?

Many variables from procedures, training to workplace environment affect human behavior. One needs to understand human behavior and the psychology of error in order to implement a process dedicated to investigating and fixing human errors.

Human Error Solutions’ CEO, an industrial-organizational psychologist and one of the world’s few human error reduction experts, Ginette Collazo, Ph.D., is here to explain how to:

  • Determine when human error is a causal factor of quality and compliance issues, as established in GMPs
  • Gain better control over human error by incorporating human factors in our process, procedures and systems
  • Understand the types of human error, including intentional and unintentional errors of omission and commission
  • Measure human error rates by using the root cause determination tool and cognitive load tool
  • Track human error and determine trends in quality and compliance by root cause coding structure
  • Make predictions regarding human error by diagnostic studies and root cause determination tool coding
  • Determine CAPA effectiveness by event reoccurrence and root cause recurrence

While human error may never be eliminated completely, attendees will come away with an understanding of the psychology of error and how to incorporate root cause and CAPA to minimize human error.

Are You Prepared for the New Requirements of the EU’s Medical Device Regulation?

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

The timeline provided by MDR was three years, which extends until 25 May 2020

In 2017, the EU’s revamped Medical Device Regulation (MDR) was published, which expanded the scope of regulations and requirements that currently govern medical device manufacturers under the Medical Devices Directive (MDD); the timeline provided by MDR was three years, which extends until 25 May 2020. Major changes from the previous MDD include:

  • Elimination of the “grandfathering” mechanism, which necessitates that all medical devices on the market must apply to be accredited, regardless of whether or not they were previously approved under earlier directives
  • Empirical evaluation and testing that demonstrates that devices are biocompatible, in alignment with ISO 10993-1:2018, and not merely relying on historical data that supports a device’s safety
  • Documentation that medical devices do not contain carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxic substances. This can be accomplished by identifying and quantifying the materials that compose the medical device above 0.1 percent (by weight)

Join Scott Graham, PhD, Team Leader at EAG and Carolyn J. Otten, PhD, Senior Manager of Analytical Services at EAG in a live webinar on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 2pm EST (11am PST) to learn about:

  • What manufacturers need to know about the EU MDR
  • Overview of the scope of testing, the analytical approach and turnaround times involved to address new MDR requirements
  • Three examples of the types of tests offered by Eurofins EAG, presented as case studies
  • Extractables and leachables studies
  • Potential follow-up steps after testing

This webinar will be followed by a live Q&A with the featured speakers.

100-Year-Old WWII Veteran Fiske Hanley II Writes Memoir to Share His Account as an Japanese POW

News Image

This intense hatred continued building up in me until sometimes I thought I would choke. – Fiske Hanley II

On the morning of May 31, 1943, less than twenty four hours after his graduation ceremony at Texas Technical College, Fiske Hanley boarded a train and changed his life forever. The train was to take him to Florida to begin his cadet training – he had been drafted by the US army to serve in the Second World War. Nine months later, he was assigned B-29 flight engineer and attached to the 504th Bombardment Group in the Pacific theater, but on his seventh mission, he and the ten other men of his crew were shot down over Japan. He arrived on Japanese soil via parachute and thus began his harrowing experience as a prisoner of war. Accused War Criminal: An American Kempei Tai Survivor (releasing today from Brown Books Publishing Group) is Hanley’s powerful account of his harrowing experiences in World War II, from his training and commissioning, to his deployment and failed mission, to his imprisonment, all the way through his rescue and recovery.

During his imprisonment, Hanley suffered much at the hands of the Kempei Tai and was tortured, starved, and forced to endure extreme conditions in which his wounds were left untended. Though Fiske suffered greatly, he tried to overcome his hatred for his oppressors, even during his imprisonment.

“How many more notches could our hatred go? This intense hatred continued building up in me until sometimes I thought I would choke,” Hanley writes. “All we could do was pray and hope that God heard us, even though I often worried that God would not hear me through such hate. So I tried to overcome it…”

With vibrancy and detailed honesty, this account amazes and humbles the reader as only stories of this level of heroism can. Hanley’s remarkable tale, which began as a way for him to deal with the trauma of being held captive during the war, exemplifies the perseverance of the human spirit in the face of great adversity. Fiske recently celebrated his 100th birthday and is proud to share his story.
