New book explains to readers why bad psychology happens, how dangerous it is, and how to seek out good psychology

“There is a lot of good psych out here. But there is plenty of bad psych too. And for the average folk, it is almost impossible to know the difference. I’ve had numerous clients whose mind has been permanently injured and their life spoilt forever because of bad psych. But don’t fret. I will work through the dangers with you, so you know what you have gotten yourself into and can change direction if needed,” Joshua Thomas states.

“Good Psych – Bad Psych & How to Tell the Difference” (published by Xlibris AU) expertly explains the dangers lurking within modern mental health services and guides readers towards sound and useful psychological therapy. In this book, Thomas has distilled hidden problems, including the awful lack of regulation, the dash for cash, the disregard for a person as an individual, and the use of bad science to justify bad psych. He also describes what makes a good psychologist and good psychology, so readers can get good psych, the therapy that does them good.

“I decided to write this book for you because there is very little guidance for you from practitioners of psychological therapy,” Thomas says. “Most information you get is from scientists, researchers, institutions, businesses, and today’s shows. Unfortunately, this information is almost always wrong, misses the point, misrepresents what we know, or is simply industry dribble. It promotes and leads you into trouble — trouble that you might never overcome. It promotes bad psych with bad psychologists providing bad psychology that destroys good minds. Now you have this book in your hand, so start reading.”

When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, Thomas answers, “Hopefully, I’ve helped them. I hope that they will feel more informed and empowered about psychological therapy and a bit weary of junk psychology on offer. I hope to leave them with a job to do.” For more details about the book, please visit https://www.xlibris.com/en-au/bookstore/bookdetails/807000-good-psych-bad-psych

NEDHSA, Monroe City Schools to bring Al’s Pals program to more than 480 students in 10 schools

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer signs the Al’s Pals agreement with Monroe City Schools.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer signs the Al’s Pals agreement with Monroe City Schools.

“This is part of a set of child and adult initiatives that will ultimately improve individuals, families, institutions, and communities,” Dr. Sizer said.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) and Monroe City Schools have entered an agreement to facilitate the provision of Al’s Pals: Kids Making Healthy Choices.

There will be 480 students that will be participating in the Al’s Pals program through the following Monroe City Schools for the 2021-2022 academic school year: Barkdull Faulk, Berg Jones, Carver, Clara Hall, Cypress Point, J.S. Clark, Lexington, M.J. Foster, Minnie Ruffin, and R.N. Shelling.

Al’s Pals: Kids Making Healthy Choices is an early childhood curriculum designed to increase social and emotional competencies in young children. The resiliency-based curriculum provides real-life situations that introduce children to health-promoting concepts and build prosocial skills, such as understanding feelings, accepting differences, caring about others, using self-control, and managing anger.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer said the memorandum of understanding complements the agency’s work in other regional school districts and “our desire to curb youth despair and establish hope.”

“This is part of a set of child and adult initiatives that will ultimately improve individuals, families, institutions, and communities,” Dr. Sizer said. “Programs like Al’s Pals offer children solutions and strategies to help overcome early life problems associated with individual, family and community trauma.”

Last week, NEDHSA announced the program’s launch with Delta Head Start pre-kindergarten classrooms located in East Carroll, Madison, and Richland Parishes to bring services to more than 400 students.

Al’s Pals follows the premise that intervening during a child’s formative years will reduce the likelihood of developing negative social and emotional behavioral patterns.

Monroe City Schools School Board Superintendent Dr. Brent Vidrine said early social-emotional skills are “an essential component for school readiness and healthy child development.”

“Now, more than ever, students need social-emotional tools that build their resilience to cope with stressors as they get older,” Dr. Vidrine said. “Monroe City Schools has chosen Al’s Pals as the Pre-K Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum because we understand that focused attention on SEL skills must be addressed during preschool to ensure long-term academic and life success.”

The Al’s Pals program is fully funded through the NEDHSA.

Dr. Sizer said that if these programs aren’t in place, “those negative social determinants and adverse health outcomes will continue to follow the children into adulthood.”

“We’re creating ecosystems to help reduce the early onset of mental illness, drug addiction, violence, suicide, teen pregnancy, school expulsion, to name a few. We are doing this because we know these things are highly correlated with adult poverty, homelessness, high unemployment, and early death,” Dr. Sizer said.

New Study Asks Clinicians to Help Shape the Future Of Psychedelic Integration Therapy

Psychedelic therapy training and software from Fluence and Osmind

Our study will allow us to better understand how psychedelic integration is practiced by therapists and how clients are affected by this approach.

In recent weeks, headlines about groundbreaking research on psychedelic-assisted therapy have given way to news that more states and jurisdictions are embracing the science and increasing legal access to psychedelics. As substances like ketamine, psilocybin, and MDMA continue to grow in legitimacy, they are bringing with them increased demand for integration therapy, as more people seek resources to help them plan, prepare for, and process their psychedelic experiences. As a result, clinicians have a remarkable opportunity to help more clients seeking alternatives to traditional mental health treatment—underscoring the need for a renewed commitment in the field of psychedelic medicine to evidence-based treatments informed by reliable data.

With that objective in mind, Fluence is launching a survey study to learn more about psychedelic integration therapists, their clients, and the mental health outcomes associated with their care. With the support of Osmind, participating clinicians will be able to quickly and easily contribute research that will help shape the future of psychedelic integration therapy.

Integration therapy involves work with clients before, during, and/or after a psychedelic experience. Because patients seek integration care for many different reasons, it can be difficult to standardize treatment protocols. Researchers say the study will give them a better sense of why patients turn to psychedelic integration therapy and how practitioners can best serve their varying needs.

“Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration is addressing a major unmet need in the community, but very little empirical research has been conducted on the subject,” says Dr. Ingmar Gorman, Principal Investigator of the study and Fluence co-founder. “Our study collaborating with Osmind will allow us to better understand how psychedelic integration is practiced by therapists and how their clients are affected by this approach.

Surveys will be completed digitally using Osmind’s platform, which automatically de-identifies all data and records, ensuring privacy remains protected in accordance with HIPAA. Clinicians and their clients who participate in the study will receive free access to Osmind’s research platform in order to track outcomes and improve engagement.

“At Osmind, we have made a pledge to promote research and improve access to innovative mental health treatments,” said Dr. Alison McInnes, VP of Medical Affairs at Osmind. “Our software is enabling mental health providers around the country to give the best possible evidence-based care to their patients. We are excited to further enable providers to contribute to research while streamlining their practice.”

Recent research and policy changes have brought psychedelics further toward mainstream acceptance, but most psychedelic use still takes place outside of clinical research settings. The study will also seek to gain a better understanding of how psychedelic use in non-medical settings is driving the current demand for integration therapy. After completion, the results of the study will be made available through publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

The study will be the first in a series of collaborative projects in the partnership between Fluence and Osmind, which aims to bring better training and technology to clinicians as psychedelic medicine is integrated into mainstream mental healthcare.

About the Study

Participation in the study is simple and requires only a minor commitment:

For therapists:

  • Complete a demographics form and answer questions regarding their practice of psychedelic integration
  • Survey takes approximately 5 minutes and only needs to be completed once
  • May withdraw from the study at any time

For patients:

  • Clinicians ask patients if they’re interested in participating
  • Patients complete a demographics form and answer questions regarding their experience in psychedelic integration
  • Initial survey takes approximately 20 minutes; after each psychotherapy session, patients will be asked to complete an approximately 15-minute survey
  • Patients may withdraw from the study at any time

To initiate participation in the study, please register here. Clinicians will be prompted to sign up to attend a live webinar hosted by Fluence and Osmind. The webinars will cover further details on the methods of the research and a tutorial on the Osmind software. The webinars are taking place on:

Financial Planners Can Uncover Client Money Scripts® with the DataPoints Advisor Tech Platform

The four core Money Scripts® beliefs

The Four Core Money Scripts®

By identifying client Money Scripts, financial planners can customize advice to help clients overcome beliefs that prevent them from achieving critical financial goals.

The Klontz Money Scripts Inventory-II (KMSI-II) is now available for use with clients on the DataPoints behavioral assessment platform. The KMSI-II measures client Money Scripts®, fundamental beliefs about money that impact financial decisions and wellness. By identifying client Money Scripts, financial advisors can customize advice to help clients overcome beliefs that prevent them from achieving critical financial goals. With its exclusive publication on the DataPoints platform, advisors can easily add the KMSI-II and the psychology of financial planning to their practices.

Money Scripts and the KMSI-II were created by Dr. Brad Klontz, CFP®, financial psychologist and founder of the Financial Psychology Institute. The KSMI-II provides advisors with detailed insights into each of four money scripts components, including:

  • Money Avoidance – Belief that money is evil; that less money is better than more;
  • Money Focus – Belief that money is the critical component in happiness; money can solve all problems; there is never enough money;
  • Money Status – Belief that self-worth is tied directly to net worth; outward displays of wealth are important; money will “take care of itself”;
  • Money Vigilance – Concern about saving money; belief in the value of saving and working for money; belief that financial handouts are negative.

“Money Scripts are some of the most well-researched components of a client’s financial personality. DataPoints is delighted to partner with Dr. Klontz to deliver this powerful tool to the financial services community,” says Dr. Sarah Stanley Fallaw, founder and president of DataPoints. “Understanding money personality is the first step to tailoring advice and guidance to help clients achieve their financial goals. Now financial planning firms can easily identify a client’s underlying money beliefs with DataPoints.”

The Money Scripts suite of assessments is available to firms exclusively through a subscription to the DataPoints behavioral assessment platform. The DataPoints advisor tech platform gives advisors the ability to:

  • Invite clients to complete the KMSI-II
  • Provide branded Money Scripts reports to clients
  • Analyze change in client Money Scripts over time
  • Compare Money Scripts profiles for couples
  • Examine Money Scripts results across the firm

In addition to the KMSI-II, advisors who subscribe will also have access to the Financial Health Scale, a measure of overall household financial wellness. Financial therapists and clinicians may also request access to the Klontz Money Behavior Inventory, an assessment of money-related disorders including compulsive spending, financial enabling, and workaholism.

“Knowing yourself better is the best starting point for making change and improving your financial life. Now those in the financial planning fields can assess client Money Scripts and receive tailored insights to guide clients to make financial changes and improve overall financial health,” says Dr. Klontz. “Discovering and exploring Money Scripts are important steps in helping clients to achieve financial success in areas such as increasing income, building net worth, and improving financial health. Money Scripts not only provides profound insights into your clients’ unique financial psychology; the process of self-discovery is engaging and fun.”

The KMSI-II and other assessments developed by Dr. Klontz meet DataPoints strict standards for scientific rigor in psychometric test development. The KMSI-II has been researched extensively and has been found to be associated with income, net worth, credit card debt, financial behaviors, and other essential aspects of financial health. “With psychometrically sound assessments like the KMSI-II, firms can have an accurate picture of their clients’ money personality and use those insights to personalize communication, guidance, and services,” says Dr. Fallaw.

Advisors can sign up for a free, two-week trial of DataPoints to access the KMSI-II.

Sucheta Kamath, Founder and CEO of ExQ®, a personalized, digital training curriculum designed to teach Executive Function skills, announces the ExQ Rally for Summer!

Much research and attention has been given to identifying and quantifying the learning loss our students have experienced in the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions. According to a December 2020 report from testing nonprofit NWEA (covering nearly 4.4 million U.S. students in grades three through eight), “…on average, students showed growth in both math and reading across the grade levels in almost all grades…but mitigating the learning loss that is happening will still require patience and a thoughtful approach.”

But how do we address the unfinished learning this summer and fall? How do we envision the supports and interventions needed for kids over a multi-year runway to ensure we learn and grow from the recent disruptions? “Depending on the depth of learning loss, school districts could consider a range of options, including extending the school year, investing in new curriculum and offering robust summer school programs,” shares Sucheta Kamath, Founder and CEO, ExQ®. “Whatever the choices, one thing is critical: we should be carving out time, tools and budgets to directly, and explicitly teach our students the cognitive Executive Function and social-emotional skills they need to develop self-awareness about their own learn strengths and challenges.”

To further support Middle and High School students, ExQ® is offering two great products to empower learning because summer is the time to for students to shine!

ExQ is an innovative patented solution to help students learn how to learn, providing 100% digital cloud-based Executive Function training content to ALL students based on their own individualized learning profile,” shares ExQ creator, Sucheta Kamath.

ExQ for School empowers middle and high school students for learning by:

  • Includes strong social-emotional supports to provide new strategies for coping to help our students embrace changes and pivot with enthusiasm
  • Virtual AI coaching helps students accelerate their learning and increase their re-engagement with school, whether in person or virtual

As momentum grows to build high-quality tutoring opportunities into summer school, and as more federal stimulus funding for student learning becomes available, districts should consider online coaching opportunities with ExQ for School. ExQ for School is aligned with CARES Act Funding:

  • Addressing learning loss especially among disadvantaged students
  • Purchasing the hardware and software needed to conduct remote and hybrid learning
  • Providing services to support student mental health
  • Supporting after-school and summer learning programs
  • Using evidence-based approaches to address learning loss, which can include assessments and distance learning equipment

Whether you’re learning from home, enrolled in summer camp, learning on a summer road trip or heading to summer school classrooms, share your optimism about learning in our #FiredUp4Summer virtual Positive Pep Rally! Rewriting the Storyline of The Invisible Customer With all the Money® in the Age of COVID

Joanie Marx –
Three-time bestselling author, entrepreneurial trailblazer and brand spokeswoman.

Today’s 50+ consumer, which includes Baby Boomers and millions more from Generation X, do not act, live, or spend money like the social myths and consumer narratives suggest they would for people of their age.

Once upon a time, when they were young, the 50+ consumer of today was the most coveted consumer in the world. That, however, has drastically changed over the last twenty years. This is especially true in the aftermath of 2020’s global pandemic.

After a decade long research study into the myths of aging, and its correlation to how brands interact with consumers, three-time bestselling author and brand spokeswoman, Joanie Marx, is debunking the myths and rewriting the distorted stories about the 50+ consumer, whom she calls, The Invisible Customer With all the Money®.

In the recent April 2021 Wall Street Journal bestselling book, “The Experts Cure: How Entrepreneurs Are Changing the World”, in which Marx authored the first chapter, she writes that, “Today’s 50+ consumer, which includes over 70 million Baby Boomers and millions more from Generation X, do not act, live, or spend money like the social myths and consumer narratives suggest they would for people of their age.”

According to Pew Research, and many other consumer studies, the 50+ consumer’s purchasing power and influence over family purchases has increased to unparalleled levels in nearly every major consumer market in recent years.

In spite of overwhelming data that shows the 50+ consumer are big spenders in key economic sectors, Marx states that “relatable likeness, and relevant storylines of them have drastically decreased in advertising campaigns.” In fact, she goes on to say, “only a meager 5% of technology related campaigns focus on the 50+ market or visually showcase 50+ consumers.”

Why does this matter to consumer brands of today and those of tomorrow?

Referred to as “The Great Wealth Transfer”, between 2020 and 2061, Marx points out there is an estimated $68 trillion that will be passed down from boomers to their immediate heirs. Over the next forty years, Generation X, who represent 65.2 million in the United States, and the Millennials, who represent 72.1 million, will undoubtedly see their purchasing power grow exponentially. Yet, by the time this happens, both will be well past 50 years of age, or closely approaching it.

If the same dismissive, false storylines about aging are applied to these two generations as they grow older, as it has been with boomers, the brands of today and tomorrow will find themselves in serious financial trouble.

What is the solution, especially in the age of COVID?

In a world still reeling from the global pandemic, Marx says “There is a simple, three-step approach to establishing a long-term lucrative relationship with the 50+ consumer.”

1.    Ensure your creative teams and journalists are not weaving in outdated myths and dismissive stereotypes into your brand messaging and articles.

2.    The storylines for your brand campaigns and content should be crafted through engaging, emotionally relevant, and authentically relatable storylines.

3.    Reach out to and partner with reliable and trusted sources who have insider information on what makes the heart of a 50+ consumer sing with joy.

Serving as an advisor, consultant and brand spokeswoman, she flips the script on outdated storylines, revealing not only how to authentically connect with The Invisible Customer with all the Money® but how to build a lucrative and long-term relationship with them.

Best Practice Institute and Newsweek Partner on New ‘Most Loved Workplaces’ Initiative

“At a time when the pandemic has disrupted the way we work and cultural forces are causing us to reexamine workplace values and practices, we believe this is an important undertaking,” says Dev Pragad, Newsweek’s CEO and co-owner. “We’re eager to see what the research reveals—and excited to provide

The Best Practice Institute (BPI) and Newsweek today announced that they are partnering on a new initiative, Most Loved Workplaces, that will identify the top companies where employees are happiest and most satisfied at work. The initiative will include a list of the top 100 Most Loved Workplaces, along with profiles of the winners, that will appear in an October issue of Newsweek, as well as other articles based on the research and ongoing conversations with CEOs and CHROs of the top companies.

The Most Loved Workplaces list is based on past research from in-depth analysis of more than 300 companies and over 3,000 executives across the U.S., the Middle East/Northern Africa and Southeast Asia, conducted by BPI, backed by John Wiley and Sons’ Leader to Leader and the University of Pittsburgh Frances Hesselbein Leadership Forum. The criteria is based on BPI research showing that productivity rises as employee satisfaction increases, with 94% of employees surveyed saying they are three to four times more likely to produce more and perform better for a company they loved and 95% saying they stayed at companies they loved three to four times longer than workers who were less satisfied.

“We have drilled down into what love of the workplace means,” says Louis Carter, founder and CEO of BPI and author of In Great Company: How to Spark Peak Performance by Creating an Emotionally Connected Workplace, which identifies the specific areas needed to become a highly respected, reputable organization where people love to work with each other—that is, a Most Loved Workplace. “We have the fastest and most reliable method of determining employee sentiment toward an organization— which is the biggest predictor of performance beyond culture and engagement.”

“At a time when the pandemic has disrupted the way we work and cultural forces are causing us to reexamine workplace values and practices, we believe this is an important undertaking,” says Dev Pragad, Newsweek’s CEO and co-owner. “We’re eager to see what the research reveals—and excited to provide a platform for the findings on Newsweek.”

After an initial interview, companies are validated through a mix of BPI research criteria, employee satisfaction results, and BPI’s algorithm that searches for comments on the web related to company employee sentiment. The Most Loved Workplace criteria cover areas around measuring employee feelings of inclusion, respect, alignment with personal values, support in achieving results, and a positive vision for continuous improvement.

Carter remarked, “Taking part in this list is enormously valuable to companies because they will get critical data not available elsewhere, along with promotion and marketing in the world’s leading media outlets, Newsweek, Wiley, and our research partner, The University of Pittsburgh Frances Hesselbein Leadership Forum.”
