National Group Calls for End to Cruel and Ineffective Animal Experiments of ‘Chronic Wasting Disease,’ Urges Shift to Modern, Superior Methods

In response to the growing threat of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), and a report this year that outlined steps to address this potential health crisis, an organization promoting non-animal research has sent a detailed letter to stakeholders calling for an end to the funding and perpetuation of animal research to study the illness.

Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research & Experimentation (CAARE) sent the letter (see here: https://tinyurl.com/yy2hvwt5 ) to a team of experts investigating CWD, including the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Department of Health and to several divisions of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which largely funds the research.

The five-page letter discusses how lengthy, expensive taxpayer funded animal experiments investigating this deadly chronic wasting disease have yielded nothing but unproductive results that put human lives at risk, while subjecting animals to prolonged and unjustifiable suffering.

CWD is a prion-related, global epidemic affecting wild deer, elk, and other cervids. It is related to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE, or “mad cow disease”) and detected in 26 US states, three Canadian provinces, Norway, Finland, Sweden and South Korea.

CAARE’s letter is a strong appeal for an end to animal experiments of CWD and to instead focus future resources toward research methods that show genuine promise in generating human-relevant data.

Such experiments are already being carried out. Earlier this year, NIH developed cerebral organoids engineered from human skin cells as a promising method to study prion disease, while in 2017 research at the University of Edinburgh successfully generated human stem cell-derived astrocytes capable of replicating human prions.

CWD experiments entail significant suffering for animals, detailed in CAARE’s letter. Various publications have described in detail how monkeys have had holes drilled in their skulls and infected tissue injected directly into their brains.

Other monkeys had infected steel wires implanted in their brains for years, other were exposed via blood transfusion and still others were inflicted with cuts to the skins that were wrapped in infected deer brains. Not one of these studies yielded conclusive information on the threat of transmission of CWD.

CAARE’s letter emphasizes that NIH’s own systematic review “could only report a ‘high level of uncertainty’ regarding possible transmission of CWD to humans, and urges that “all scientists and public health experts effectively address the threat of CWD and its unknown transmissibility to humans by ending inconclusive animal studies and replacing them with human-centered methodologies.”

“All animal experiments currently conducted at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories, the Alberta Institute for Prion Research, the University of Calgary and elsewhere should be immediately terminated. In the interest of mercy and in recognition for their sacrifice to humans, we believe that all current animal survivors of CWD experiments should be sent to sanctuaries,” said CAARE.

Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research & Experimentation is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, established to highlight and promote research without animals. CAARE’s mission is to reduce animal suffering by disseminating information about the power and progress of research without animals.

Ketamine Holds Promise in Derailing Veteran Suicide

A new study published in the November issue of the Annals of Clinical Psychiatry provides dramatic evidence that ketamine can be an effective treatment for combat related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans. Ketamine is a time-tested medication that is receiving a significant amount of positive attention recently. It is proving itself to play a valuable role in the treatment of mental health conditions such as depression and PTSD. The study looked at 30 veterans who had debilitating PTSD due to combat experience. Psychological testing was done before and after a series of ketamine infusions that were delivered at escalating doses. The study was performed at Klarisana, which operates ketamine infusion centers in Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico. Tyler Schmidt, a nurse practitioner Klarisana and former Special Forces medic, summarizes the findings by saying, “we saw a 44% decrease in the average score on the PCL-5 which is psychological testing tool that shows the severity of PTSD symptoms in patients. The score decreased in 28 out of 30 veterans which has huge implications for preventing veteran suicide.”

Froy Cervantes, who is the Supervising Medic for Klarisana and a Marine Corps Veteran, served as the liaison for the veterans in the study. Cervantes said, “as an Afghanistan veteran, this study really affected me on a personal level. The VA reported in 2016 that the national veteran suicide rate was 30.1 per 100,000 veterans whereas the suicide rate in the general population was 17.5 per 100,000 people. It was great to be a part of something that might actually do something tangible to decrease the veteran suicide rate.”

Gerson Barahona, the Director of Operations for Klarisana adds, “one of the first studies showing that ketamine could be an effective treatment for PTSD was published by the US Army Institute of Surgical Research in 2008. Unfortunately, ketamine didn’t receive the research dollars or attention one might have expected, given the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The veteran suicide rate is the whole reason that Klarisana opened its first center in San Antonio, Texas. Our goal is not just to provide clinical treatment but to also advance medical knowledge regarding how ketamine can treat PTSD.”

Dr. John Huber PsyD, a forensic psychologist and member of the Klarisana Medical Advisory Board, further describes the implications of this study. He said, “one of the most significant aspects of this study is that we used much higher doses of ketamine than have been used previously in other studies. One of our hypotheses is that the ‘experiential’ effects of ketamine are not a side effect but rather an essential part of the treatment effect. While many studies use an arbitrary, and rather low, dose of 0.5 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) of body weight, our average dose on the sixth infusion was 1.94 mg/kg.”

Zackery A. Tedder, Licensed Psychological Associate and Klarisana advisor builds on this by saying, “this is really exciting because, the finding that we could safely produce such a robust treatment response at dramatically higher doses really challenges the old paradigm that the effect of ketamine is purely biochemical and otherwise unrelated to the non-ordinary state of consciousness and ego disruption that ketamine causes.” Tedder adds, “in our follow up study, we are repeating this protocol in paramedics who have developed PTSD from their careers in prehospital care. This time we are adding specific survey instruments that assess the role that the experiential or “psychedelic” aspect of ketamine produces. This is not surprising as it is the same effect that has received a lot of attention in the popular press such as with Michael Pollan’s book on the science of psychedelics. Our paramedic study will shed some interesting light on the role of the experiential aspect of ketamine.”

Carl J. Bonnett, MD, is the Medical Director for Klarisana and one of the study’s authors. Bonnett said, “ketamine has the potential to be an incredibly disruptive technology for the treatment of PTSD. It is exciting to be a part of something that could potentially have a positive effect on the suicide rate in this country. That being said, it is important to look at this in an evidence-based fashion. There are a number of clinicians who are flocking to the field of ketamine infusion therapy for the wrong reasons. We have clinicians in our own backyard in San Antonio who are making wild and completely unsubstantiated claims about ketamine. Some of these individuals are trying to pass off ‘proprietary blends’ of ketamine and other ingredients that have not been subject to scientific inquiry. Our goal at Klarisana has always been to practice evidence-based medicine and contribute to the field of ketamine therapy in a positive and constructive fashion.

Klarisana is based in San Antonio, Texas and operates clinics in Austin, Texas, Denver, Colorado, and Carlsbad, New Mexico. For questions about this study or for questions about the ongoing follow up study looking at the use of ketamine for PTSD in paramedics please contact Klarisana at http://www.klarisana.com or email info@klarisana.com.

CEREC Technology Equips Dentist Dr. Nickelice Brand with Easy, Accurate Impressions and Dental Crowns in Ocala, FL

Dr. Nickelice Brand, Dentist in Ocala, FL

Dentist Dr. Nickelice Brand Improves Dental Crown Milling in Ocala, FL

One of the things we are most proud of in our office is the ability to bring the latest in technology to our patients. CEREC makes me better, it makes our patients happier, and it’s a wonderful technology.

Ocala, FL dentist, Dr. Nickelice Brand, improves dental crown milling and the dental impression process with state-of-the-art CEREC technology. Utilizing cutting-edge digital scanning, digital impressions offered by CEREC improve the accuracy, comfort and speed of treatment over traditional “goopy” impression material. This technology also offers an in-house milling machine, allowing Dr. Brand to provide same-day dental crowns, bridges, and dental implants customized for each patient.

Traditionally, dental impressions are taken using a goopy material that often makes patients gag, tastes bad, and can be uncomfortable to sit through. CEREC technology removes these drawbacks by using a handheld wand that captures digital images of the teeth and the bite. This results in a quicker and more comfortable treatment when capturing impressions for dental crowns or bridges.

In addition to making impressions easier to capture, CEREC also speeds up the treatment timeframe when it comes to the creation of dental crowns or bridges. CEREC has its own in-house milling machine, which can fabricate a lifelike and durable dental crown or bridge during the same appointment the impression is taken. This is beneficial to patients because they no longer have to wear temporary crowns or wait weeks for their finalized tooth.

“One of the things we are most proud of in our office is the ability to bring the latest in technology to our patients,” says dentist Dr. Brand. “CEREC makes me better, it makes our patients happier, and it’s a wonderful technology.”

CEREC technology is a versatile tool that can be used for multiple dental procedures. Commonly, dental crowns are created to restore damaged teeth, but they can also be used to cap a dental implant. CEREC also allows dentists to create dental bridges, a collection of crowns attached together to span the gap of a missing tooth. Plus, it provides the data needed to create full mouth dental implant arches for procedures such as All-on-4®. Dr. Brand offers All-on-4 dental implants to patients with several damaged or missing teeth as a permanent full mouth tooth replacement option.

Those interested in learning more about CEREC, dental crowns, or the other services offered at Dental Implants of Ocala can connect with Dr. Brand for a consultation. To schedule an appointment, call the practice at 352-653-2500 or visit the website, http://www.dentalimplantsofocala.com.

Report about Homeschooling Overreaches on Claims

The Cato Institute recently released a report arguing that homeschoolers should support school choice proposals because greater educational freedom empowers parents to provide richer learning opportunities for their children.

Robert Kunzman, Managing Director of the International Center for Home Education Research and a professor at Indiana University, reviewed Homeschooling and Educational Freedom: Why School Choice is Good for Homeschoolers. He found that while the report does identify some ways that homeschooling can contribute to educational innovation, its primary theme—repeated suggestion of a strong relationship between homeschooling growth and the expansion of other school choice policies—is not adequately established.

Drawing on four states with expansive education choice programs, the report’s rationale is grounded on a purported chain of causation from robust school choice policies to homeschooling growth to educational innovation.

Professor Kunzman explains that these causal contentions are purely speculative and are not borne out by the broader state-level data. In fact, he writes, at least half of all states lack reliable data. Among states with data, some that do show dramatic homeschooling growth have regulatory environments more favorable to school choice, but enough counterexamples exist to make even simple conclusions uncertain.

While these problems compromise the usefulness of this new report, Kunzman notes that homeschooling is indeed a context in which educational innovation can flourish. The flexibility of homeschooling provides ample room for learning experiences that can meet the needs of individual students. But beneficial innovations are not the sole province of homeschoolers, since we find compelling examples in all sectors of schooling.

Professor Kunzman concludes that homeschooling serves as one potentially effective option for a good education. He also cautions that modest state oversight of homeschooling is useful to protect children’s basic educational interests while preserving freedom for parents and their delegates to tailor the learning experience.
