University of Houston Psychology Major Wins the SignatureCare Emergency Center 2023 Fall Semester Medical and Health Scholarship

The scholarship award which is aimed at helping students pay their tuition, room and board, books, and other college-related expenses, is given twice a year to qualified U.S. college students who demonstrate strong passion and commitment to the healthcare and medical field.

To be considered for this highly competitive award, students are required to meet certain criteria, and submit a 500-word essay that answers the question: Who or what inspired you to enter the medical field? More information about the scholarship is available here.

While accepting the scholarship award, Nicole Obialo said receiving this scholarship will contribute to her success and provide the means to continue her education. She thanked everyone at SignatureCare Emergency Center for granting her the scholarship.

“Knowing that the scholarship committee read my personalized story, recognized the hard work I put into my academic career and gave me an opportunity to further my education has put me a step forward towards my career goals.

“This scholarship has allowed me to put an investment towards my future, and for that I am incredibly grateful. Thank you to everyone at the SignatureCare Emergency Center for granting me this scholarship,” she said.

She said she was 17 years old when she witnessed a traumatic event that changed the course of her life.

“I was 17- years old when I knew I wanted to practice medicine. Growing up with a Type-2 diabetic grandma has let me be exposed to ways the human body can naturally be disrupted. At times it was controlled and others uncontrolled. Many trips to the emergency room curated my early fascination of the nurses and doctors that worked in the ER, but it was not until witnessing a young boy undergo cardiac arrest in front of me that forever changed my perspective on reality and inspired me to pursue a career in the healthcare field.

“We were a group of kids outside playing a game of tag when suddenly one of the boys fell to the ground, as if he had fainted. I ran to him, and my first instinct was to call 9-1-1 and turn him to his side since the only knowledgeable techniques I knew at that time were those of someone having a seizure.

“I knew that turning someone onto their side will aid in clearing their breathing passage. His eyes rolled to the back of his head. Checking his neck, his wrist, and even putting my head to his chest, he had no pulse. Fear ran through me heavily as I was trying to remain calm. Many kids quickly began to crowd around me and the boy, looking at me for guidance since I was the only person that ran to his aid.

“Many thoughts were racing through my mind, even those of CPR but, ironically, my fear of doing the wrong thing and hurting him overpowered me. I did not have the confidence to act but it was instinct to take control and help. The ambulance arrived and the boy was pronounced dead of cardiac arrest.

“The guilt of me not performing simple CPR compressions and saving this young man’s life has forever stuck with me. Knowing what to do in a timely manner would have saved him. Having confidence in myself and in what I knew would have saved him.

“From that day, I knew I wanted to pursue emergency medicine. I aspire to be on the frontline of treatment and have the confidence and willpower to save many lives. I want to be able to treat patients when other medical professionals can’t. I strive to be able to treat life-threatening conditions at any given moment and be given the opportunity to understand the many complexities of the human body. We are all a heartbeat away from needing emergency care and I want to be able to save those lives since I was not able to save that young man’s life,” she added.

Dr. Christopher Langan, MD, an Emergency Medicine Physician and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of SignatureCare Emergency Center, congratulated Ms. Obialo for winning the award.

“Nicole’s future in the health field is bright and we are happy to help her along the way as she journeys towards this future,” Dr. Langan said.

Are Medspas The Walmarts of Esthetic Medicine?

According to Cynthia Elliott, MD, an esthetic physician and physician trainer who owns Skinspirations and ExpertEsthetics in Clearwater, FL, “Medspas are like Walmart. People are happy to shop at Walmart for the basics, but for higher quality purchases, they go elsewhere.”

Here are three reasons why a physician-based office may be the better choice for receiving esthetic medical treatments.

Safety
Unlike doctors’ offices or hospitals that are required to follow strict national and state-specific rules for medical professional qualifications, the regulations for medspas are left up to individual states. For example, in New Jersey, laser hair removal can only be done by a physician,(4) while in New York, cosmetologists may perform the procedure.(5)

Medspas are required to have a physician medical director who is responsible for overseeing the medical aspects of the business, but in most states, the directors don’t ever have to physically step foot on the premises. In many medspas, none of the treatments are performed by a physician.

Even though many esthetic medical treatments are touted as “minimally invasive,” some can have severe complications. Blindness, strokes, and even deaths have been recorded when wrinkle-filling substances were accidentally injected into arteries.(6) Burns from lasers can cause scarring and severe infections, which are a possibility with any treatment that penetrates the skin.

Some severe complications can be avoided with quick action, but treatment providers with less training than a physician may not have the knowledge or resources to manage problems in time to prevent permanent damage.

For cosmetic treatments that don’t penetrate the skin, like basic facials or massages, a medspa may be the perfect choice, but the more potential complications associated with a procedure, the more important it is for people to choose a physician for the treatment or at least have one present and available. A dermatologist is the safest choice for anyone with an underlying skin condition.

Quality of Results
If someone is interested in a pampering facial or a Botox “lip flip” where the worst possible outcome is no results, choosing a medspa for the treatment is a reasonable option. At the other extreme, the results of treatments like laser skin resurfacing or a “liquid facelift” are operator-dependent. Physicians with extensive experience are comfortable with choosing aggressive laser settings or even combining different devices or treatments to achieve the best possible results, whereas medspa employees are more likely to follow a conservative protocol and use a “cookie cutter” approach with a single device or treatment.

Better Treatment Options Potentially Available
Sometimes, the best esthetic treatment options aren’t available in a medspa. For example, dermal filler treatments are usually available in a medspa, but a patient who would benefit more from a fat transfer won’t be given the choice. Likewise, medspas may only recommend non-invasive fat reduction treatments to a patient who’d get better results with liposuction.

Because esthetic lasers and devices are extremely expensive, it’s not uncommon for a medspa to only own one or two and promote them to treat concerns for which a different device would have been safer and/or more effective. For example, laser hair removal on dark skin using a laser made for light skin can cause blistering and permanent scarring.

Dr. Elliott advises anyone seeking more than simple esthetic treatments or skincare to go to a physician-based practice, even if it’s more expensive. She adds, “Would you go to a facility for heart surgery because they had a special? Your face deserves the best and safest results possible, so it’s up to you to do your homework.”

Skinspirations, owned and operated by Dr. Elliott, is an aesthetic and regenerative medical practice that provides advanced treatments with esthetic injectables, lasers and other devices, body contouring, and regenerative therapies for musculoskeletal problems and aesthetic concerns. Dr. Elliott has been practicing aesthetic medicine exclusively for 18 years and, prior to that, was a board-certified emergency physician for 15 years. She is also a nationally known trainer who teaches other doctors esthetic injectable and laser techniques. Skinspirations’ midlevel providers and other doctors have all been with the practice for at least seven years, and her aestheticians for at least 12 years, so they’re a very experienced, well-oiled team.

Asana Recovery to Distribute Free Narcan to Local Community

“We’re working diligently to put this lifesaving medication into the hands of not only those suffering from addiction, but also their families, educators, community leaders, and concerned citizens who want to help combat the opioid crisis,” says Amber Vaughan, Admissions Director for Asana Recovery. “We encourage all community members to obtain and carry Narcan, as the fentanyl-opioid crisis continues to escalate and affect our communities.”

Asana Recovery is a licensed and certified substance use disorder treatment facility that was approved to provide free Narcan after a thorough application process. Those interested in obtaining the free medication for themselves, or for a family member, friend, or loved-one, may choose to visit the Asana Recovery outpatient center or register online. A prescription is not required to obtain Narcan from Asana Recovery. However, individuals receiving Narcan will be required to complete a brief opioid overdose and prevention training and register their full name, date, and attestation of training completion.

The NDP is one of the ways the state is combating opioid overdose-related deaths throughout California. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Narcan is a lifesaving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications, when given in time.

Naloxone, more commonly known under the brand name Narcan, was approved by The Food and Drug Administration for over-the-counter use in March. And just this month, Narcan will be available, for the first time, as an over-the-counter medication that may be purchased at retail drugstores and online. Narcan is formulated to immediately treat and reverse an opioid overdose and must be administered when a person is experiencing or actively showing signs of an overdose.
