New Research Unveils Innovative Technology called Forbrain to Reduce Vocal Fatigue and Enhance Voice Quality.

  • Comparing Two Bone Conduction Devices

The study, led by Charles Nudelman of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, involved twenty participants aged 19 to 33. The participants’ voices were challenged in a vocal loading task while using two types of bone conduction devices. The first device was the Forbrain® device, developed by Sound For Life Limited, which digitally manipulated the speakers’ voices and provided auditory feedback through the bones of the skull. The second was a modified Forbrain® device that offered increased loudness as feedback. A control condition with no device was also included for comparison.

The findings were promising. Across all participants, the use of the feedback devices led to significantly lower vocal fatigue compared to the condition with no feedback. Participants consistently rated their fatigue levels lower during tasks with these devices.

Interestingly, the speakers’ voices revealed noteworthy changes in acoustic voice parameters while using the feedback devices, as well.

  • A Promising Preventative Tool

Previously, a separate study demonstrated the impact of Forbrain on the robustness parameter of the voice. These new findings position the Forbrain® device as a promising tool for mitigating vocal fatigue. Dr. Pasquale Bottalico, the principal investigator of the laboratory, expressed optimism about the implications, stating, “This research shows that these devices will greatly benefit occupational voice users who rely on their voices daily. This technology will be a powerful tool in reducing vocal fatigue and enhancing voice quality for teachers, singers, and even actors.”

The full research study is set to be published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research in the near future.

ASHA Joins Nonpartisan Coalition for Trust in Health & Science

Nonprofit Works to Counter the Escalation of Mistrust and Distrust in Health Care, Public Health, and Science

ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 27, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) announced today that it has joined the Coalition for Trust in Health & Science, a non-partisan and non-profit undertaking for countering the escalation of mistrust and distrust in health care, public health, and science.

“ASHA has long advocated, practiced, and provided evidence-based decision-making, practice, and guidance,” ASHA 2023 President Robert M. Augustine, PhD, CCC-SLP, said. “We are pleased to be part of the Coalition. It shares our values and is dedicated to a very important cause. Having trust in health and scientific information is critical if the public is going to be properly guided and receive care that is safe, appropriate, needed, and deserved.”

“The Coalition for Trust in Health & Science is excited to welcome ASHA, and the expertise of its members to our increasingly important initiative,” said Reed Tuckson MD, a cofounder of the Coalition. According to Tuckson, the Coalition honors the many efforts underway that have similar goals, and it appreciates having the opportunity to foster a “big tent” approach to addressing misinformation and disinformation on a large scale, which the Coalition believes is necessary.

Launched a year ago, the Coalition’s goals include contributing to a measurable increase in public trust, and supporting the public to make evidence-based, personally appropriate health choices for themselves, their families, and the communities where they live.

Its convening committee includes representatives from the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health; the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and Research!America. Members include more than eighty organizations that represent health care and health systems; public health and health policy; basic and applied science; pharmaceutical and device manufacturers; health care communicators; and philanthropy and foundations.

Through their memberships, each organization has access to the Coalition’s Compendium, a platform where they can fortify the Coalition’s impact through exchanges of ideas, developments, information, resources, and research findings, and the collaborative planning and implementation of activities.

“We look forward to working with fellow Coalition members to foster public prominence, acceptance, and accessibility to accurate, evidence-based health and scientific information,” Augustine said.

Oral Biolife Announces the Publication of a Pivotal Manuscript Demonstrating the Efficacy of PiezoGEL™ for the Treatment of Periodontal Disease In-Vivo

For the first time, in this study, an injectable piezoelectric hydrogel (PiezoGEL™) was developed after combining gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) with biocompatible piezoelectric fillers of barium titanate (BTO) that produce electrical charges when stimulated by biomechanical vibrations (e.g., mastication, movements). PiezoGEL™ showed significant reductions in pathogenic biofilm biomass (∲41%), metabolic activity (∲75%), and the number of viable cells (∲2–3‥log) compared to hydrogels without BTO fillers in vitro. Molecular analysis related the antibacterial effects to be associated with reduced cell adhesion (downregulation of porP and fimA) and increased oxidative stress (upregulation of oxyR) genes. Moreover, PiezoGEL™ was demonstrated to significantly enhance bone marrow stem cell (BMSC) viability and osteogenic differentiation by upregulating RUNX2, COL1A1, and ALP.

Dr. Stella K. Vnook, MBA, PhD, Founder of Oral Biolife stated: “This is a great Proof of Concept that PiezoGEL™ is well positioned to potentially transform periodontal treatment and potentially other areas where bone regeneration and tissue growth are vital for recovery. The scientific inventors of this technology, Dr. Santiago Orrego, PhD, and Dr. Carolina Montoya, PhD, have done a prodigious job demonstrating how PiezoGEL™ effectively reduced periodontal inflammation and increased bone tissue regeneration compared to control groups in multiple mice models.”

Bill Breitenbach, CEO of Oral Biolife, commented: “We are very excited this study further confirms that PiezoGEL™ may be a most promising and novel therapeutic candidate for the non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease”.

This work provides further evidence that PiezoGEL™ is a potentially groundbreaking disruptive treatment for periodontitis due to its unique combination of antimicrobial and bone regeneration properties.

About PiezoGEL™:

PiezoGEL™ is a piezoelectric hydrogel that is being developed for use in the treatment of periodontal disease, a common dental disease characterized by the formation of bacterial biofilms, inflammation, bone loss, and if left untreated, loss of teeth. PiezoGEL™ utilizes the ability of naturally occurring piezoelectric materials to generate small electrical charges to elicit a combined antimicrobial and bone tissue regenerative effect. Activation of the piezoelectric materials in PiezoGEL™ have now been demonstrated in a complex physiologic system to disrupt bacterial biofilms, prevent bacterial recolonization as well as stimulate the regrowth of the bone tissue that is lost due to periodontitis.

Advantages of PiezoGEL™:

  • A cutting-edge, fundamentally different product compared to existing non-surgical treatments /adjuvants.
  • PiezoGEL™ is an innovative, drug-free treatment that does not raise concerns regarding bacterial antibiotic resistance.
  • Possess the unique ability to disrupt biofilms, prevent the recolonization of bacteria, and stimulate the regrowth of bone tissue without surgery
  • Harnesses the benefits of piezoelectric particles and hydrogels (light-curable, conforms to pocket spaces, and is biocompatible), eliciting the desired biological processes in the periodontal pocket that fight disease and generate tissue without surgery.
  • PiezoGEL™’s bioactive effects have a long-term operation since electrical charges are not exhausted and do not require “re-charging”.

About Oral Biolife

Oral Biolife is an innovative biotechnology company out of Temple University that utilizes the unique properties of Piezo materials to develop groundbreaking, first-to-market products. Their lead asset, PiezoGEL™, via its unique combination of antimicrobial and bone regeneration properties, represents a potential breakthrough advancement for the treatment of periodontal disease.
