Cash awards were given for First Place ($500), Second Place ($300), Third Place, Fourth Place, and President’s Picks ($100). Honorable Mentions also received cash prizes ($100 each). All participants in the essay contest will also receive a small gift in the mail. RSN top essay winners will be translated into Spanish and be accompanied by an audio version read by the author.

The top five essays will be published in RSN’s KidneyTalk® Magazine. All winning essays will also be featured prominently on RSN’s website and social media platforms to inspire and empower others facing similar challenges.

Renal Support Network (RSN) is a nonprofit patient organization that was founded in 1993 by Lori Hartwell, a kidney disease survivor since 1968. Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Takes Historic Step In Athlete’s Mental Health Care by Partnering with Collegiate Behavioral Health Associates


“I am thankful for this intentional work and partnership to focus on what we all know is critical to how our student-athletes thrive and show up every day on the field and in the classroom,” said Jacqie McWilliams-Parker, Commissioner of the CIAA. “Partnering with CBHA allows CIAA leadership to address the ongoing mental health concerns of our student athletes and it gives us an opportunity to really focus with a partner that has created intentional space towards supporting student athlete mental wellness!”

As part of this partnership, CBHA’s program will provide the following services to every student-athlete of the CIAA:

  • Self-report screenings focused on suicidality, depression, anxiety, alcohol use and eating disorders. CBHA will provide a full range of mental health services, from early screenings to options for ongoing therapy.  The process ensures that athletes receive the care they need when they need it.
  • 1-on-1 Initial Diagnostic Interviews with a qualified, licensed mental health professional chosen from a diverse network to meet the specific needs of every athlete.  Every assessment closely follows confidentiality protocols.
  • 100% Digital Approach allows student-athletes to complete their sessions and interviews from the comfort of anywhere.
  • Recurring 90-Day Cycle, allowing our program to consistently reach out to student-athletes and ensure their mental health is always taken care of.

Dr. Laura M. Tiedemann, Esteemed Oculoplastics Surgeon, Joins OCLI Vision’s Growing Team


Dr. Tiedemann’s educational journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with Honors from Brown University. She earned her medical degree from the prestigious George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her passion for ophthalmology led her to complete her residency training in Internal Medicine at Yale New Haven and Waterbury Hospitals, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at New York Medical College at Westchester Medical Center. Dr. Tiedemann’s leadership and expertise shone during her final year of residency when she served as Chief Resident.

To further specialize in oculoplastics, Dr. Tiedemann pursued a highly competitive fellowship at the renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, known for being among the top 10 ophthalmology programs in the United States. During this fellowship, she honed her clinical and surgical skills, solidifying her expertise in eye plastic, orbital, and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Tiedemann’s contributions to the field are also evident in her authorship of a book chapter on Orbital Anatomy for skull-based surgeons.

Throughout her career, Dr. Tiedemann has been actively involved in medical research, conducting valuable studies at esteemed institutions such as Columbia University, NYU Langone Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Children’s National Health System. Her research has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and has significantly impacted the field of pediatric ophthalmology, setting new practice standards.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Tiedemann demonstrates a strong commitment to public service, dedicating her time to tutoring children with autism and learning disabilities. In her leisure, she enjoys dancing, traveling, and cherishing quality time with her family.
