HSA Store shares tips for maximizing Health Savings Account (HSA) funds on National HSA Awareness Day

Established to call attention to the importance of tax-advantaged accounts, HSA Awareness Day is an opportunity to educate Americans about the unique triple tax advantage of these accounts: deposits are tax deductible, growth is tax deferred, and qualified spending is tax free.

According to the experts at Health-E Commerce, here are four ways consumers can maximize the benefits of their HSA.

  • Save on everyday health expenses: Understanding what’s eligible is the most common hurdle for HSA users. That’s why HSA Store removes all of the guesswork by selling only products that are deemed eligible by the IRS. HSA Store also offers a comprehensive, searchable online eligibility list and a selection of more than 2,500 eligible products, which makes it easy to find exactly what they need.
  • Open an HSA, even if you can’t fund the account: Individuals and families who are enrolled in a qualified high-deductible health plan are encouraged to open an HSA as soon as they enroll in their health plan, even if they are not able to fully fund the account from day one. According to Romanini, there is usually no cost to open an HSA and consumers have the flexibility to make contributions as able throughout the year or to pay for expenses out of pocket, save the receipts, and make contributions to the HSA and reimburse themselves at a later date.
  • Track healthcare expenses over time: Most HSA users don’t realize that they need to track their HSA purchases over time, in the event their taxes are ever audited, or that they can reimburse themselves for expenses incurred during times when they had a zero balance in their account. In most cases, this means paperwork. However, HSA Store simplifies this task for account holders with an easy-to-use expense dashboard that allows users to effortlessly track their spending and upload healthcare receipts according to each tax year.
  • Save for the future: It’s estimated that a couple who is retiring in 2023 will need to have saved $315,000 or more to pay for healthcare expenses in retirement, so it pays to be prepared. An HSA allows consumers to invest unspent funds into stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Those contributions can then be used without penalty to pay for healthcare and other expenses in retirement. Finding the right balance between saving now and investing for the future is important, which is why HSA Store offers an HSA future value calculator to help consumers find the right balance.

“While HSAs are a sound future savings strategy, it’s important that consumers understand how they can also use these tax-free funds to pay for items like bandages, sunscreen, menstrual care items, and pain medication – things they already buy and use everyday,” said Romanini. “HSAs give consumers the potential to save an estimated 30% on health-related expenses, depending on their tax bracket, and that’s a valuable financial edge in today’s market.”

For additional guidance on making the most of a health savings account, visit the HSA Store Learning Center.

Commission for Case Manager Certification celebrates National Case Management Week with salute to “Keeping the person at the heart of collaborative care”

New professional growth options include new self-care episodes and CCMC Virtual Symposium

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., Oct. 4, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Commission for Case Manager Certification® will celebrate case managers as change agents and advocates in observance of National Case Management Week, Oct. 8-14, 2023. CCMC’s Virtual Symposium and new episodes of its “Push Pause” video series will premier as the Commission aligns with the case manager community and salutes these resilient professionals for “keeping the person at the heart of collaborative care.”

“Case managers are change agents who go above and beyond to advocate for the individuals they serve,” said Commission CEO MaryBeth Kurland, MPA, CAE, ICE-CCP. “As connectors and collaborators on the health care team, they help clients access resources they need, overcome challenges, and navigate the complex health care system.”

By “keeping the person at the heart of collaborative care,” case managers holistically assess client needs and actively engage with other health care providers to help clients achieve optimal health outcomes. With the client at the center of care, case managers serve as positive change agents who can empower individuals to take an active role in their health care journey.

The Commission advocates for professional case management excellence through its Certified Case Manager® (CCM®) credential and a range of professional development resources to enhance their knowledge and skills. Next week, CCMC’s Virtual Symposium offers inspiring and empowering live learning sessions for case managers over three days, offering continuing education opportunities and curated content to advance the profession.

As critical members of the health care team, case managers are not immune to the emotional burden of the role and the increasing risk for burnout seen across the health workforce. The Commission is a network organization of the National Academy of Medicine’s (NAM) Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience; demonstrating its ongoing commitment to case manager wellness this week with new episodes of its podcast series, “Push Pause.” This year’s series will encourage case managers to activate their role as change agents through self-reflection focused on their successes and potential to drive transformative improvements in health care.

“Case managers are innovative problem solvers who use their creativity to overcome barriers and find new ways to address challenges,” Kurland says. “By pausing to reflect during stressful times, they can activate their own power to persevere and realize resilience in their daily lives and work.”

As a community, case managers also encourage and nurture one another’s professional growth. The Commission is sponsoring a contest with AllNurses.com throughout the month of October amplifying the voices of case managers as they express what it means to keep the person at the heart of collaborative care. By sharing their experience and perspectives, case managers will champion their role as advocates and change agents.

Gastroenterology Associates of New Jersey Partners with Oshi Health to Pioneer Hybrid Virtual & In-Person Care for Exemplary Digestive Health Outcomes

“We aim to build a virtuous cycle between in-person and virtual GI care that results in an enhanced level of continuous care for our patients and helps elevate our own business,” said Dr. George N. Pavlou, gastroenterologist and President & CEO of GANJ. “By adding proven elements of care that are not possible through our brick-and-mortar practice, we can increase availability for new patients, free up additional time for our doctors to do endoscopy, reduce practice overhead and patient leakage, and increase patient retention – all while adding new referrals through Oshi.”

GANJ is one of the nation’s leading independent and growing GI groups, with 38 gastroenterologists including 4 advanced practice providers serving the greater New Jersey area. Known for exemplary patient care and operational excellence, GANJ has been delivering value-based care with multiple health plans for more than a decade and has a long tradition of partnering for value-added relationships to improve patient care.

“GANJ is a leading provider of high-quality, patient centered digestive care in New Jersey, and we are excited to help them optimize their care through advanced data analytics, in-between visit support, and access to multidisciplinary care,” said Dr. Sameer Berry, Chief Medical Officer at Oshi Health. “We built Oshi Health to fill care delivery gaps in traditional digestive care and working with GANJ will further demonstrate the potential to drive outcomes and reduce avoidable cost when patients receive the best of virtual and in-person care.”

STATE OF GI CARE
Digestive health issues cover a wide-ranging set of symptoms and conditions that affect 1 in 4 working age adults in America and incur higher direct healthcare costs than heart disease and mental health. Its actual impact is far greater as millions more go undiagnosed, and indirect costs such as reduced workplace productivity are difficult to measure.

Evidence demonstrates that dietary changes, psychological interventions, and behavioral health support are needed to mitigate symptoms for many digestive health sufferers and are best able to give patients back control of their lives. A recent clinical trial testing whole-person, multidisciplinary care showed that patients reported 98% satisfaction with the Oshi Health program, 89% improvement in quality of life, and 92% reported symptom improvement within the first 10 weeks of treatment. Patients also reported 1.3 fewer missed workdays per month and demonstrated lower healthcare utilization including a 64% reduction in GI-related emergency department visits.

Oshi Health’s integrated care model can be coupled with local GI practices to provide effective relief through evidence-based, whole-person, high-touch integrated care. Through telehealth visits with specialized providers, a patient’s care plan is continuously informed and refined through proactive monitoring of patient symptoms, food intake, and bowel movement patterns, and a care team that provides ongoing messaging and support to make sustainable lifestyle changes.

Oshi Health’s approach helps people significantly improve their conditions, from diagnosis to individualized treatment. In partnership with GANJ, this program can reinforce care plan adherence, supplement in-person interactions, provide on-demand care support, and provide early intervention for symptom flares.

About GANJ
Gastroenterology Associates of New Jersey (GANJ) is an integrated group practice with a team of highly skilled gastroenterologists. Formed in 2009 with 9 physicians, the group has grown organically to include 38 gastroenterologists, with offices in 25 locations in 4 counties across New Jersey. As an independent practice, GANJ has been able to forge strong relationships with local hospitals and all of the major payors including Medicare and Medicaid to deliver high quality and value care to its patients. Carson Life Lands Multi-Million Dollar Growth Funding from Decathlon Capital Partners

Sonia Guzmán, Founder and CEO of Carson Life, started the company after noticing that the beauty products in her local pharmacy were not made with her in mind, but rather for the general population and then repackaged for Latinas. Today, Carson Life products can be found in more than 9,000 stores across the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as online.

The company’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of the underserved—yet growing—Hispanic community by making high quality, all-natural, health and beauty products specifically for Latinas, Guzmán said. “My goal has always been to help my community lead healthier, happier, and more confident lives,” Guzmán said. “As a company, we pride ourselves on being the only authentic health and beauty brand in the United States created with the Hispanic community in mind. Not only do we have a Hispanic management team and LatinX Board members but we also provide customer service in Spanish and literally live and breathe the culture.”

In 2021, Carson Life expanded with the addition of Eva+Avo, an eco-friendly and sustainable hair care line made with natural ingredients and free from sulfates and parabens. Like the rest of Carson Life’s product range, Eva+Avo is formulated with natural, healthy ingredients, flavors and scents that Hispanics identify with.

The investment from Decathlon Capital Partners provides Carson Life with a flexible, non-dilutive solution to help fund the company’s growth initiatives. In exchange for growth capital, Carson Life did not have to give up any equity, ownership, or control, as they will instead share a small percentage of future revenues with Decathlon in exchange for the infusion of growth capital.

John Borchers, Managing Director of Decathlon Capital Partners, said Carson Life is meeting a clear need within the health and beauty industries. “Carson Life’s impressive growth trajectory shows that its commitment to serving the Hispanic population through their product lines is working,” Borchers said. “Decathlon is excited to support Carson Life as they continue to expand distribution and product offerings.”
