Dr. Rohit Varma of CHA HPMC’s Southern California Eye Institute Completes World’s First In-Human Implant of Calibreye System for Glaucoma Patients

SCEI Founding Director Completes Next-Generation Glaucoma Management Surgery

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center (CHA HPMC), a member of CHA Health Systems, a global network providing a full spectrum of dynamic healthcare services is proud to announce the Founding Director of its state-of-the-art eye institute, Southern California Eye Institute, Dr. Rohit Varma has become the first Glaucoma surgeon in the world to implant a next-generation glaucoma drainage device, known as the Calibreye System, into a human patient.

This landmark device has the potential to customize glaucoma management to levels unseen in the Ophthalmology field.

The Calibreye System is engineered to allow the specialist to manually control the increase and decrease of titratable outflow in glaucoma patients, in accordance with their individualized treatments plans. This controllable titratable outflow is designed to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP). IOP is the amount of fluid pressure in the eye. High IOP is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss in patients with glaucoma.
Dr. Rohit Varma stated, “Unlike other glaucoma drainage devices, the titratable outflow of the Calibreye System has the potential to achieve personalized optimal IOP in our patients, with simple, in-office adjustments. I believe this is a transformative advance in the management of our patients with moderate and severe glaucoma.”

Affecting nearly 66 million people worldwide, glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Of these 66 million individuals who are affected by glaucoma, more than one-third have moderate to severe glaucoma, putting them at increased risk for blindness.

Due to both systemic obstacles and antiquated biases in the workforce, entrepreneurship has become an increasingly viable option for people with disabilities to embark on a meaningful career path. According to a 2022 report from the National Disability Institute (NDI), “there are 1.8 million business owners with disabilities in the U.S.”, and “with a significant portion (74 percent) of people with disabilities outside the labor force, entrepreneurship is an important employment option for this population. However, they are often hindered by limited access to affordable startup capital and a scarcity of support, services and programs tailored to their unique needs and challenges.” 2GI’s Cohorts aim to set the stage for visionary founders from the Disability Community to access the support and the investment capital they need and deserve to take their respective start-ups to the next level.

Since the launch of 2GI’s first accelerator in 2019, about 70 startups have participated, and these businesses have collectively raised approximately $50 million dollars in funding from investment, revenue and acquisitions from outside investors. 2GI network’s international community consists of over 600 founders with disabilities from 15 countries world-wide.
