The idea of “patient-centered care” or “personalized medicine” strives to ensure that healthcare decisions, treatments, and plans are tailored to each patient’s unique circumstances and that patients are actively involved in the decision-making process. Dr. Rosen notes that while this is a nice sentiment, the actual care provided does not often fit what is practiced in medicine.
“From a historical perspective, until the 1980’s the only real treatment option for breast cancer was removal of the entire breast, a mastectomy. Then we began to see that survival rates were similar between mastectomies and lumpectomies, and the scale started to tip more toward a breast conservation strategy when clinically appropriate,” said Dr. Rosen. “The decision is not black and white, however – many factors are at play from both the doctor and patient perspectives.”
Such factors include the biology and growth pattern of the cancer, the anatomy and size of the breast, the level of training the surgeon has, and the patient’s personal preferences.
Surgeons’ decisions are heavily influenced by their level of training and resources – some feel comfortable offering breast conservation surgery when clinically appropriate, while others may not and default to mastectomy given their lack of training, experience, and tools to support them and their patients. For patients, their decision is often fueled by a sense of urgency and fear, with many opting for a mastectomy because they initially care more about getting rid of the cancer than saving a breast. In fact, the rate of double mastectomies has increased recently, with many thinking this may be their best option.
“While patients might not care much when they’re still processing their diagnosis, their view can change after surgery, and in recovery mode they might have a completely different view and come to regret their decision,” said Dr. Rosen. “In fact, many studies have shown that patient satisfaction outcomes are consistently higher for those women who chose breast conservation. That’s why, as their doctor, I think it’s important to have as many tools in our toolbelt as possible to help patients make the decision that works best for them in the long run. However, what we’re seeing is that the playing field is not level across hospitals and practices. Doctors often do not have the right tools or awareness to offer the best aesthetic option, and patients feel pressured to decide ASAP without thinking of long-term impact. That’s where I think tools like SimBioSys’ TumorSight Plan can be a real disruptor.”

He added, “While patients have different views on what they prefer, there is one universal truth – every patient wants back the life they had before they felt that lump or had an abnormal mammogram. You’re going to get that life back much faster if there’s not a daily reminder of your disease. I think that TumorSight Plan will empower patients. When they’re able to see what they could look like, they’re much more likely to feel confident in their decision, no matter what it might be. And doctors are, as a result, able to provide care that is truly patient-centric.”
Dr. Rosen compares TumorSight Plan’s approach to doing a home remodeling project. “Instead of immediately starting the remodel, the best contractors with the right tools can give you a 3D model of your current home and walk you through the best option for the remodel and explain why certain things are possible or not. The weed science areas students exhibited during this contest included:
Weed identification. Students needed to correctly identify 25 weed species in any stage of development—including seed samples.
Sprayer calibration. Students took a written test regarding all aspects of sprayer calibration, such as required spray volume, amount of herbicide needed per gallon or liter, nozzle nomenclature and selection, sprayer pressure, droplet size, boom height, and drift reduction techniques. This portion also included a team activity where students calibrated a sprayer.
Herbicide identification. Students identified 10 different herbicides based on visual symptoms and selectivity when applied to crops and weeds.
Weed control issues faced by farmers and other weed management practitioners. Students evaluated a crop production problem in areas such as weed management and recommended an effective solution. Examples included herbicide injury, weed resistance, or agronomic errors.
“This contest was a great educational opportunity for students to showcase their weed science knowledge,” says Matthew Wiggins, WSSA student contest chair. “Students did this not only through written tests, but also in hands-on tests that tackled real-world weed management problems and challenges.”
Regional awards sponsored by the Northeastern Weed Science Society, North Central Weed Science Society, Southern Weed Science Society, and Western Society of Weed Science were also given to students. All in all, 153 graduate students and 64 undergraduate students on 54 teams from 27 universities gleaned many hours of training under the guidance of university weed scientists. BALTIMORE, Md., Oct. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Sonavex, Inc., a privately held medical device company with ultrasound technologies that deliver quantitative blood flow and other critical vascular data at the point of care, is pleased to announce that the American Medical Association (AMA) has issued a new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code for the use of its EchoSure platform to assess arteriovenous fistulae (AVF). The AMA released this information in the October 2023 Summary of Panel Actions from the September CPT Editorial Panel Meeting. The new code is expected to become effective July 1, 2024. The AMA will publish the description and specific procedure code on January 1, 2024.
The AMA CPT Editorial Panel grants and maintains CPT codes, which provide a standard nomenclature for coding medical procedures and services. Providers utilize these codes to report medical services and procedures to Medicare and commercial health plans for reimbursement. The release of this new CPT code represents a significant milestone in Sonavex’s market access and reimbursement strategy.
EchoSure is an automated, 3D Duplex ultrasound system designed to allow any member of the care team to collect AVF volume flow, diameter and depth information. These parameters are essential for the management of AVF patients. There are millions of patients worldwide with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) that require dialysis to sustain life. The majority of these patients rely on a central venous catheter (CVC) for their dialysis access while they wait for an AVF to mature. Patients with CVCs experience a high incidence of bloodstream infections resulting in hospitalizations and suffer a multiple-fold increase in mortality risk compared to patients with AVFs. Currently, it often takes several months for AVFs to reach maturation due to the challenges and delays associated with collecting routine ultrasound measurements to confirm AVF functionality or identify a problem. Existing ultrasound solutions require experts such as Registered Vascular Technologists (RVTs) or physicians to operate the devices, which reduces patient access and unnecessarily elongates dangerous catheter dependency. By empowering members of the care team who routinely care for dialysis patients to collect this essential information, EchoSure facilitates early decision-making to remove the catheter at the earliest possible time.

Alongside ‘Captain Consistent’ Andrea Peron, who’s 2023 campaign was yet again characterized by repeated top ten results and included two podiums and the points jersey at the Tour de la Mirabelle, 2023 also marked breakthrough seasons for Czech star Matyas Kopecky and 21-year-old Italian Filippo Ridolfo.
Ridolfo starred in numerous big race breakaways, came close to a first professional victory in Slovenia with second place in GP Kranj and spent three days in the best young rider jersey at the Tour of Denmark.
While Kopecky started to shine in the spring with strong results at Scheldeprijs followed by top tens at the Tour de Hongrie, Dwars door Het Hageland and his first WorldTour top ten on stage four at the Tour of Poland. Arguably the 20-year-old saved the best for last with an impressive fifth place in the U23 road race at the European Championships in September before another top ten against strong competition on stage four of he season finale, the Tour of Turkey.
