Mount Sinai Researchers Find More Than 4,700 Gene Clusters Crucial for Prognosis in 32 Cancer Types

NEW YORK, Nov. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Researchers at the Mount Sinai Center for Transformative Disease Modeling have released a groundbreaking study identifying 4,749 key gene clusters, termed “prognostic modules,” that significantly influence the progression of 32 different types of cancer. The study, published in Genome Research, serves as a comprehensive resource and lays the foundation for the development of next-generation cancer treatments and diagnostic markers.

Despite significant progress in cancer research, understanding the disease’s genetic intricacies remains challenging. Previous research often focused on isolated gene functions in specific cancer types.

“We aimed to fill this knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of gene-gene interactions across various forms of cancer,” said Bin Zhang, PhD, Willard T.C. Johnson Research Professor of Neurogenetics and Director of the Mount Sinai Center for Transformative Disease Modeling.

The team used a multi-omics approach, incorporating genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic data in their analysis. They employed advanced systems biology approaches to analyze more than 10,000 patient samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), one of the most comprehensive public cancer databases, and used rigorous network methods to identify and validate the gene clusters that have a significant impact on cancer prognosis.

“The implications of our findings are profound. We have identified 4,749 distinct co-regulated gene modules that play a pivotal role in cancer progression,” explained Dr. Zhang.

Peng Xu, PhD, Instructor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and co-senior author, added: “Our study goes beyond merely identifying these modules. It also elucidates the multi-scale regulations that govern their functions.”

In simpler terms, the study has identified critical genes and their complex relationships that either halt or promote cancer progression. This new understanding opens the door for targeted research and development of future treatments and diagnostic methods for cancers.

While this study represents a significant step forward, it is not an immediate cure for cancer. However, it serves as a crucial foundation for developing targeted therapies that could lead to improved patient outcomes. “Our findings offer fertile ground for the next wave of cancer research and treatment strategies,” said Dr. Zhang.

The paper is titled “Multiscale network modeling reveals the gene regulatory landscape driving cancer prognosis in 32 cancer types.”

eddii, a gamified diabetes app, has now launched in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, and Kansas

“With the launch of our upcoming virtual care feature, parents will be able to schedule an appointment with a licensed pediatric endocrinologist at the tap of a button, on the same fun, engaging app that streams their child’s real-time glucose data from their Dexcom CGM,” said Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD, eddii’s CEO.

Achieving optimal glucose for children with diabetes requires round-the-clock management. There are hundreds of decisions to make every day; monitoring blood glucose changes and considering all the factors besides food and insulin that affect blood glucose. This in addition to making decisions on how to interpret nutrition labels, what monitor to use, how to wear it correctly and deal with any chafing or discomfort, how to prepare for a school field trip or a sleepover, and on and on. Every day it’s something different. And every single day it must be managed.

eddii is a virtual in-app character designed to engage people living with type-1 diabetes (T1D) and wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to track their health. Using games, educational character-led activities, and AI-enabled conversation (coming soon!), eddii becomes a smart, virtual health buddy, giving users real-time feedback, support, and in-app rewards in return for healthy behavior.

Earlier this year, eddii entered a real-time API partnership with Dexcom, which allowed the app to integrate with the users’ real-time Dexcom CGM readings, delivering updates on blood glucose levels. eddii is currently available in the states of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, and Nebraska. For those outside of these states, you can join the eddii’s early access program here. As of today, eddii has over 15,000 families and individual using CGMs on its waitlist.

With eddii, children and their families take managing diabetes to a different level, motivating them to stick to healthy routines. Over time, eddii becomes the user’s personal health buddy, cheering them on, challenging them and celebrating their achievements. With eddii, users play fun games, can request support, and receive daily rewards on the same interface that displays their real-time CGM data.

“We will soon be launching further motivational games and rewards for children, such as real-life gift cards, in addition to glucose alert phone calls and a comprehensive virtual care platform for parents. That way, parents can have a reliable interface at the tip of their hands to manage their child’s diabetes.”

eddii conducted a clinical trial where 92 children with T1D and their families were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using Dexcom CGM. Outcomes from the trial showed a statistically significant 5% improvement in Time In Range (TIR), roughly translating into 1.5 additional hours every day of optimal glucose levels for children living with T1D.

In addition to launching in two states and partnering with Dexcom, eddii recently closed a $2.5M seed round led by Kapor Capital, with participation from Atento CapitalMedMountain Ventures (MMV)StartUp Health, and angel investors.

About eddii

eddii is a startup focused on making diabetes management fun. Founded by CEO Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD., who lives with Type-1 diabetes, its vision is to create a fun, supportive, and educational interface that helps people living with diabetes take care of themselves and feel happier doing so. This collaboration brings together two organizations with missions grounded in innovation, education and ensuring providers have the tools to deliver the best results and experiences for their patients.

The partnership also highlights the importance of comprehensive skincare in enhancing the outcomes and comfort of laser and energy-based treatments. The two co-branded kits, available exclusively from Cartessa Aesthetics, are called the ‘Gear Up’ and ‘Accelerate’ programs and are designed to cater to the specific needs of individuals undergoing cosmetic or medical procedures.

The Gear Up program focuses on preparing the skin in the days or weeks leading up to a procedure. It offers a tailored skincare regimen that nurtures the skin, ensuring it is in the best possible condition before treatment begins. Inflatable Film receives first ever Fiscal Sponsorship for “Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool” from the Hawai’i International Film Festival (HIFF) to support local filmmakers

Inflatable Film, Maui-based impact film production company, signed the first Fiscal Sponsorship agreement offered by the Hawai’i International Film Festival, a Hawai’i based 501c3 non-profit organization. Fiscal sponsorships are a critical catalyst for filmmakers to secure funding to produce documentaries, like Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool, which was one of the Opening Night films at HIFF43 Fall festival.

MAUI, Hawaii, Nov. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Inflatable Film, Maui-based impact film production company, signed the first Fiscal Sponsorship agreement offered by the Hawai’i International Film Festival, a Hawai’i based 501c3 non-profit organization. Fiscal sponsorships are a critical catalyst for filmmakers to secure funding to produce documentaries, like Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool, which was one of the Opening Night films at HIFF43 Fall festival.

Fiscal sponsorships are an invaluable tool for filmmakers to be able to produce local stories and share impactful content with broad distribution. “Uncle Bully Surf Skool”, from Inflatable Film, about local surf instructor Bull Kotter and his mentorship of the underserved youth during the pandemic, is one of the last stories filmed in Lahaina before the August 8, 2023 fires. Leah Warshawski, Producer/Director and Todd Soliday, Director/Editor considered the film finished and ready to submit for festivals in early June. After the fires destroyed Bully’s home and business, left several of the film’s crew homeless, and threatened many of the encampments where the children in the film lived, Leah and Todd picked up their cameras once again.

“It is an honor to be HIFF’s first fiscal sponsorship partner, which enables donors and sponsors to make tax deductible contributions. It’s often the only way we can tell unique and life-changing stories about people making a difference in their communities. After the fires on Maui, HIFF was the first, and only, film festival to ask how they could help. Now we’ll be able to contribute to the local film economy for a long time to come.” Leah Warshawski, Inflatable Film Co-Owner, and Producer.

The demand for short films and documentaries is on the rise, increasing by 142% in 3 years, according to Axios and Parrot Analytics. HIFF sees the significant opportunities for the industry and is launching its fiscal sponsorship initiative in conjunction with the HIFF43 Fall festival to support the local filmmaking community across Hawai’i to help them build their businesses and craft at home, by helping them securing funding through donations versus having to take work off-island.

“HIFF’s Fiscal Sponsorship initiative is an important step for our organization to support our filmmaking community in Hawai’i, and a cornerstone of our purpose as a creative pipeline in the Pacific and further promoting the development of careers in the arts,” said Beckie Stocchetti, executive director of Hawai’i International Film Festival. “Inflatable Film and Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool were selected because of their reputation as award-winning filmmakers who are committed to showcasing the stories of the community in Maui and across the islands.

“Inflatable Film is currently seeking donors to help them cover the costs of filming new footage, paying their local Maui crew, and post-production / finishing costs. The newly completed film now includes never-before seen footage of the devastation of Lahaina after the fires and the ongoing recovery through surfing for local children and families in the weeks that have followed. Their initial goal is to raise $100,000.00 for these expenses and help them begin a nationwide impact screening tour to shed light on the continued plight of the Lahaina community and showcase the impact of mentors inspiring children to see their potential.

About Inflatable Film

Inflatable Film is an award-winning impact film and video production company with over 50 years of combined experience in the film and video industry, based in Maui and Sun Valley, Idaho. They specialize in unique and intimate storytelling around the globe, having filmed in 30+ countries for broadcasters, non-profits, corporations, and brand content. Their films have won numerous awards, screened at more than 75 festivals, including “Finding Hillywood” and “Big Sonia” which played at the White House and is currently streaming on a variety of networks including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and PBS.

The new clinic provides much-needed access to low-barrier treatment for fentanyl, meth, heroin, alcohol and other substances in the Sky Valley.

MONROE, Wash., Nov. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Ideal Option, a national leader in evidence-based outpatient treatment for addiction to fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, alcohol and polysubstance, is now welcoming new patients in Monroe. The new clinic, conveniently located downtown, on the second floor of 101 E Main St, diagnoses and treats substance use disorder with evidence-based, FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine. The clinic does not administer methadone or prescription oral medications to patients onsite.

According to recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fentanyl-related overdose deaths have surged across the United States in recent years, reaching unprecedented levels.

In Washington state, the problem is particularly acute, with a sharp increase in fentanyl-related fatalities. In Snohomish County alone, there were 189 overdose deaths involving fentanyl in 2022, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office Drug Overdose Dashboard.

Fentanyl is regularly mixed with other illicit drugs to make them more addictive, often without the user knowing. Polysubstance use disorder is therefore now the most common diagnosis at Ideal Option. According to their 2022 Annual Patient Outcomes Report showing aggregated lab testing results for more than 7,000 patients in Washington state, 63% of patients tested positive for more than one substance at enrollment, and 27% tested positive for three or more substances.

The report does offer hope, however, by showing how effective medication-assisted treatment is for reducing isolated and poly-substance use. For patients who remained in treatment with Ideal Option during 2022, lab testing shows:

  • 94% less total opioid use
  • 98% less fentanyl use
  • 95% less heroin use
  • 88% less methamphetamine use
  • 84% less cocaine use

The new clinic is Ideal Option’s fifth location in Snohomish County and is opening at a time of desperate need for expanded access to evidence-based treatment from experienced providers. Ideal Option has been specializing in addiction medicine using buprenorphine-based medications such as Suboxone® for 11 years and currently operates 90 clinics in 9 states.

“The Sky Valley area is near and dear to my heart. This community needs services, solutions and compassion,” said April Provost, community outreach coordinator for Ideal Option. “With our team of experienced addiction medicine specialists, peer support, and network of community partners, we can help make an impact in the lives of those seeking recovery.”

The new outpatient clinic in Monroe is open Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m.6 p.m. at 101 E Main St, Suite 201.

Most forms of insurance are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid, and patients can typically get started on treatment for fentanyl, heroin, alcohol or other substances within 1-3 business days.
