Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine Adds Fear Free Certification to Curriculum

[ad_1]

“Fear Free’s rigorous standards and empathetic approach to animal handling and care… will help the next generation of veterinary professionals reach a deeper understanding and level of care for animals than ever before.” —Sean Callanan, MVB, CertVR, MRCVS, PhD, FRCPath, DiplECVP, Dean of Ross Vet

The prestigious Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (Ross Vet) will add Fear Free certification requirements to its DVM curriculum this summer, Fear Free, LLC announced today. Founded in 2016, Fear Free provides education to veterinary professionals, pet professionals, the animal welfare community, and pet owners on emotional wellbeing, enrichment, and the reduction of fear, anxiety, and stress in pets. Fear Free certification is currently required or highly encouraged in the majority of the 33 veterinary schools in the United States, but this development marks the first time that Fear Free certification requirements have been enacted internationally.

The Fear Free curriculum will provide Ross Vet students with the tools and techniques needed to deliver the best possible care for pets and certifies their commitment to preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, and stress in pets. Becoming Fear Free Certified can also provide Ross Vet students an advantage when looking for a job post-graduation. According to Fear Free’s 2021 annual member survey, 98% of certified veterinarians report that patient care has improved since implementing Fear Free. The survey also noted increases in patient visits and workplace safety.

As part of the development, Fear Free companion animal certification and equine certification will be implemented into the curriculum for all Ross Vet DVM students beginning in the summer 2022 semester, with avian certification being offered as an elective in the avian medicine program. Fear Free certification will also be required for all clinical faculty and staff.

“Veterinarians of my generation were taught and remember the harsh physical restraint we utilized to immobilize animals,” Dr. Marty Becker, Fear Free’s founder and Chief Professional Relations Officer, said. “It was designed to protect people with little regard for the animal’s emotional wellbeing. Most of these animals were terrified and felt they were going to be harmed or even killed. Now Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine students will learn Fear Free techniques, which still achieve positional compliance to take X-rays, vaccinate, place a catheter, or examine a wound but are designed to protect the animal’s emotional as well as physical state.”

Ross Vet, located in St. Kitts, has nearly 6,000 graduates since its founding in 1982. Clinicians and staff at the Ross University Veterinary Clinic on campus are Fear Free Certified, but this marks the first time that Fear Free certification will be officially introduced as a part of the curriculum for all students. With their Fear Free membership, students will get exclusive access to 60+ hours of additional RACE-approved CE, supplemental resources, marketing assets, a listing in the Fear Free directory, and more.

“Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine has always strived to develop a deep understanding of veterinary science and a passion for keeping our patients’ wellbeing front and center,” Sean Callanan, MVB, CertVR, MRCVS, PhD, FRCPath, DiplECVP, Dean of Ross Vet, said. “Fear Free’s rigorous standards and empathetic approach to animal handling and care is a natural fit for our curriculum and will help the next generation of veterinary professionals reach a deeper understanding and level of care for animals than ever before.”

The benefits Perspire’s infrared sauna and red light therapy provides are unmatched. There’s a demand for the science-backed treatment and I’m excited to bring it to the Paradise Valley & Scottsdale community.

Perspire Sauna Studio, the original infrared sauna franchise to make natural health, wellness and beauty benefits available to individuals in an accessible and affordable delivery, is coming soon to Scottsdale and the Paradise Valley area. Slated to open this summer, this studio marks the second location to open in Arizona.

Located at 7001 N Scottsdale Rd at the intersection of Indian Bend & Scottsdale Roads, the 1,900-square-foot studio will hold 10 all private, top-of-the-line custom infrared saunas, each having the capability to hold either single or double person capacity. The Seville Shops & Dining center is home to a number of health and wellness-minded concepts including Orangetheory Fitness, Cyclebar, Massage Envy, and others. The location is perfectly situated to serve Scottsdale and Paradise Valley residents.

“I’ve been a wellness enthusiast my entire life but predominantly so in my later adult life. I am familiar with a lot of health and wellness concepts and corresponding benefits, but after being introduced to Perspire, I immediately knew I had to be a part of this movement,” said Maureen Rzeppa, franchisee and owner of Perspire Sauna Studio in Paradise Valley. “The benefits Perspire’s infrared sauna and red light therapy provides are unmatched. There’s a demand for the science-backed treatment and I’m excited to bring it to the Paradise Valley & Scottsdale community.”

Perspire Sauna Studio combines a centuries-old practice with modern-day science and technology to provide guests with a holistic, full-body health and wellness alternative that compliments and supports the active and healthy lifestyle, especially within Arizona. Benefits range from detoxification, weight loss, alleviating pain, enhanced immunity, clearer skin, improved sleep, relaxation, and more. A visit to Perspire feels like a relaxing retreat, where guests can unwind with personalized entertainment all while experiencing the healing benefits of the infrared sauna experience. Sessions are typically 40 minutes and walk-ins are always welcome.

As a nearly 30-year Phoenician, Rzeppa had a successful 20-year career working for a leading Valley high net worth investment advisor ultimately becoming a managing partner and chief administrative officer. In 2020, that company was acquired and Rzeppa began researching wellness franchise concepts to bring to her community.

“In addition to this studio, we’re planning to open two more studios in Arcadia and central Scottsdale within the next year. The benefits are too good to not share with as many people as possible,” adds Rzeppa.

Upon entering Perspire, guests are greeted with a consultation from a team member and are taken back to a private sauna room. Each sauna is outfitted with the ability to choose the temperature, entertainment, color light therapy, and high-intensity red light therapy ensuring a multi-sensory experience. Seraphina Therapeutics to Donate Percentage of Sales In Honor of National Dolphin Day

[ad_1]

National Dolphin Day is a day to recognize and solve the endangerment of one of the ocean’s most beloved creatures.

Dolphins are among the planet’s most intelligent and social animals—but changes to their oceans are threatening their welfare. That’s why, in honor of National Dolphin Day on April 14, health and wellness company Seraphina Therapeutics is donating a percentage of its sales to support wild dolphin conservation efforts. Five percent of sales of the company’s fatty15 supplement from April 2-17 will go to the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, which has supported conservation efforts for the past 50 years.

Seraphina has a deep connection to dolphin-kind. While studying how to continually improve the health and welfare of older dolphins, Seraphina’s co-founder and CEO Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson, a veterinary epidemiologist, discovered a nutrient that not only helps protect the health of aging dolphins, but can help keep humans healthy, too.

That nutrient is C15:0 (pentadecanoic acid), one of several odd-chain saturated fats that Dr. Venn-Watson and her team found in the fish-based diets among the healthiest of dolphins, including those in Sarasota Bay, and published in PLOS ONE. After this initial discovery and years of subsequent studies, they found that pure C15:0 can help regulate glucose, immunity, and cholesterol. It also naturally activates receptors that orchestrate metabolism, immunity, mood, appetite, and sleep. These studies were published in “Nature’s Scientific Reports” during May 2020. Since that publication, dozens of peer-reviewed studies have linked higher circulating C15:0 concentrations to better metabolic, immune, heart and liver health in humans. Seraphina created a supplement, called fatty15, made of 99% pure, vegan-friendly, and bioavailable C15:0 powder. Fatty15 was launched during January 2021 and sold out within 6 weeks.

For its extensive studies on C15:0 and bringing a pure C15:0 ingredient (FA15) and supplement (fatty15) to the market, Seraphina was awarded the 2021 Best of the Industry Award by the editors of Nutritional Outlook Magazine.

Watch Dr. Venn-Watson’s TEDx San Diego talk (located at 3:08:08 into this stream) to learn how helping older dolphins live the longest, healthiest lives possible taught us how to age healthier, too – and how the C15:0 good fat present in their fish diets and our butter may improve health for all.

About: Seraphina Therapeutics, Inc. is a health and wellness company dedicated to advancing global health through the discovery of essential fatty acids and micronutrient therapeutics. Through rigorous breakthrough science, the company develops fatty acid supplements, food fortifiers, and nutritional interventions to strengthen cells, keep mitochondria working and advance cellular homeostasis to counter age-related breakdown. With its team of industry-leading scientists, Seraphina Therapeutics challenges long-held approaches to nutrition, enabling the creation of novel health products designed to support quality of life. SpIntellx has the first-mover advantage in precision pathology by applying truly unbiased spatial analytics to decipher the complex cancer biology.

SpIntellx, Inc. created the new era of precision pathology to dramatically improve patient outcomes by leveraging proprietary unbiased spatial analytics and explainable AI. SpIntellx’s precision pathology solutions have the potential to unlock a plethora of new applications in medicine and research by answering the fundamental question “Why?” , thus revealing the underlying patient-specific disease network biology across each stage of the drug development, diagnostics, and treatment pipelines.

SpIntellx offers software as a service (SaaS) for precision pathology applications harnessing unbiased spatial analytics and explainable AI including: accelerated drug discovery for identifying novel targets, biomarkers and “invisible” cell types; optimized clinical trials for precision patient stratification; advanced companion diagnostics for radically improving prediction accuracies through deep insights into biological mechanisms of action; and personalized therapeutic options for selecting optimal therapeutics based on insights into probable patient outcomes.

Artificial Intelligence May Improve Diabetes Diagnosis

[ad_1]

We found that diabetes was associated with the amount of fat within the pancreas and inside the patients’ abdomens. The more fat in those two locations, the more likely the patients were to have diabetes for a longer period of time.

Using a fully-automated artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning model, researchers were able to identify early signs of type 2 diabetes on abdominal CT scans, according to a new study published today, April 5, in the journal Radiology.

Type 2 diabetes affects approximately 13% of all U.S. adults and an additional 34.5% of adults meet the criteria for prediabetes. Due to the slow onset of symptoms, it is important to diagnose the disease in its early stages. Some cases of pre-diabetes can last up to 8 years and an earlier diagnosis will allow patients to make lifestyle changes to alter the progression of the disease.

Abdominal CT imaging can be a promising tool to diagnose type 2 diabetes. CT imaging is already widely used in clinical practices, and it can provide a significant amount of information about the pancreas. Previous studies have shown that patients with diabetes tend to accumulate more visceral fat and fat within the pancreas than non-diabetic patients. However, not much work has been done to study the liver, muscles and blood vessels around the pancreas, said study co-senior author Ronald M. Summers, M.D., Ph.D., senior investigator and staff radiologist at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

“The analysis of both pancreatic and extra-pancreatic features is a novel approach and has not been shown in previous work to our knowledge,” said first author Hima Tallam, B.S.E., M.D./Ph.D. student.

The manual analysis of low-dose non-contrast pancreatic CT images by a radiologist or trained specialist is a time-intensive and difficult process. To address these clinical challenges, there is a need for the improvement of automated image analysis of the pancreas, the authors said.

For this retrospective study, Dr. Summers and colleagues, in close collaboration with co-senior author Perry J. Pickhardt, M.D., professor of radiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health, used a dataset of patients who had undergone routine colorectal cancer screening with CT at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Of the 8,992 patients who had been screened between 2004 and 2016, 572 had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 1,880 with dysglycemia, a term that refers to blood sugar levels that go too low or too high. There was no overlap between diabetes and dysglycemic diagnosis.

To build the deep learning model, the researchers used a total of 471 images obtained from a variety of datasets, including the Medical Data Decathlon, The Cancer Imaging Archive and the Beyond Cranial Vault challenge. The 471 images were then divided into three subsets: 424 for training, 8 for validation and 39 for test sets. Researchers also included data from four rounds of active learning.

The deep learning model displayed excellent results, demonstrating virtually no difference compared to manual analysis. In addition to the various pancreatic features, the model also analyzed the visceral fat, density and volumes of the surrounding abdominal muscles and organs.

The results showed that patients with diabetes had lower pancreas density and higher visceral fat amounts than patients without diabetes.

“We found that diabetes was associated with the amount of fat within the pancreas and inside the patients’ abdomens,” Dr. Summers said. “The more fat in those two locations, the more likely the patients were to have diabetes for a longer period of time.”

The best predictors of type 2 diabetes in the final model included intrapancreatic fat percentage, pancreas fractal dimension, plaque severity between the L1-L4 vertebra level, average liver CT attenuation, and BMI. The deep learning model used these predictors to accurately discern patients with and without diabetes.

“This study is a step towards the wider use of automated methods to address clinical challenges,” the authors said. “It may also inform future work investigating the reason for pancreatic changes that occur in patients with diabetes.”

Each new patent validates and MDsave is the industry leader in medical service bundling enabling affordable, high quality medical care.

“These patents extend MDsave’s innovative approach to healthcare service bundling,” says Paul Ketchel, chief executive officer of MDsave. “Giving consumers access to transparent pricing with the ability to compare the cost of services with deductibles puts them in control of their healthcare.”

In a season where rising healthcare costs and higher deductibles are likely to continue, cost will drive an individual’s healthcare decision-making process. By partnering with trusted care delivery organizations, MDsave provides easy to access quality healthcare at fair prices. By bundling procedure costs with physician fees, consumers pay one inclusive price with no surprise billing after their appointment.

The Virtual Payment system delivers a pricing tool with service pricing and cost adjustment information allowing a virtual account with funds transacted in the marketplace. Deductible checker provides the consumer with immediate access to their in-network and out-of-network deductible and out-of-pocket max.
