Beginning its second decade as a physician-owned and operated company, Indianapolis-based OPYS has today risen to acquire a national reputation for effectively addressing critical physician shortages and medical professional challenges.

OPYS has grown its hospital network to include physician services in Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Illinois, Washington, California, North Dakota, and expects to expand soon in New York, Oregon and Wisconsin.
In achieving national 21% growth over 2021 in its specific national markets, OPYS provides hospital-based physician management group outsourcing to emergency, inpatient, urgent care, and telemedicine centers, delivering a customized array of physician services.
A major key to the current success and national growth of OPYS is its physician network experienced in serving rural healthcare needs. “Having served as an emergency department and trauma center physician, I know firsthand about the unique needs in fulfilling these critical roles, especially in providing high-quality patient care and outcomes,” said Dr. Creese. “That same quality of experience is reflected in the OPYS staff, which allows us to quickly and effectively serve our partner hospitals.”
Senior executives and specialists recently brought on by OPYS include Don Kelso, MBA, Chief Operating Officer (COO), a former hospital CEO and rural health association top executive; Deena Dodd, vice president of business development and government affairs; Becky Saunders, MBA, executive director of telehealth services; and Karl Rademacher, BS, financial analyst and director of IT. Lee Flannery has been promoted to Revenue Cycle Director and former OPYS COO Alicia Calloway now serves as vice president of rural health partnerships from her home state of Tennessee.
Several members of the OPYS clinical and administrative leadership teams also directly contribute to the ongoing success and expansion of OPYS, including Mike Wheelis, MD, National Medical Director of Quality and Education; Mary Conley, MSN, RN, FNP, EMT-P, National Director of NP/PA Services; Sandi Wagner, RN, MBA, MHIA; and Robert J. Rookstool, MD, Regional Medical Director, Washington state.
“Many critical access and community hospitals in urban and rural settings need help to staff emergency or trauma departments,” said Kelso, who was brought on board in 2022 to help set the stage for continued OPYS growth. “OPYS effectively matches up both hospital needs and the needs of the physician to create mutually beneficial relationships.”

He noted that several firms offering similar services exist to serve large hospitals in major urban areas, but OPYS specializes in the smaller-to-mid-sized hospital or trauma center. “We found a real need here in that medical market segment and one that we can uniquely fulfill,” the OPYS CEO added.
