Aktiv Pharma Group to Participate in the FDA Emerging Technology Program

Aktiv Pharma Group (Aktiv) announced today the acceptance of its novel glass-free, film-based flexible primary drug container (PDC) technology for sterile injectables named ARCH, into the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Emerging Technology Program (ETP). The ETP is a collaborative effort which supports the FDA’s mission to facilitate modernization in the pharmaceutical industry and helps pharmaceutical companies reduce the time and cost requirements of introducing new, innovative solutions.

The ETP will enable the FDA to establish better understanding of the unique aspects of film-based PDCs and use this insight to develop guidelines and regulations ahead of a broader adoption by the industry. It will also allow Aktiv to communicate with the FDA to create alignment on regulatory, technical, and scientific matters associated with gaining regulatory approvals for Aktiv’s products. “We are excited to participate in this important program and delighted that our technology was recognized by the Agency for its broad potential to improve quality and safety of sterile injectable products” said Patricia Brown, Aktiv’s VP of Quality and Regulatory.

ARCH uses high-barrier polymer films to provide superior performance and increased functionality over conventional glass packaging, either as substitute to vials or when incorporated into prefilled drug delivery systems. ARCH was developed by Aktiv to address potential interactions between biologics and glass-based containers, improve aseptic barriers, provide a superior solution for drugs that require reconstitution at the time of use, and create a foundation for more functional and user-friendly combination products.

The first products to feature the flexible ARCH containers are emergency-use autoinjectors currently being advanced to FDA approval. Aktiv’s autoinjector pipeline includes tranexamic acid (TXA), atropine, pralidoxime chloride (2-PAM), atropine/2-PAM dual-injection, and scopolamine. The flexible container is crucial for achieving the unprecedented ruggedness and reliability of the ARAI autoinjector platform. Aktiv is additionally developing a biologic combination product in collaboration with a leading biopharmaceutical company and planning new products with integrated reconstitution capability.

About Aktiv’s Emerging Technology

With the exception of ampules, conventional rigid containers necessitate drug contact materials other than glass, most commonly rubber in elastomeric stoppers/plungers. In prefilled syringes and autoinjectors, interior container walls are frequently coated with silicone to prevent plunger binding and to improve glide. These materials are especially problematic for biopharmaceuticals which are inherently unstable and prone to aggregation and adsorption. Headspace in rigid containers results in a liquid/gas interface that further reduces stability of biopharmaceutical products. By comparison, Aktiv’s flexible film containers do not rely on elastomeric stoppers or siliconized surfaces, reducing the number of drug contact materials to just one, and their headspace can be minimized or even eliminated. Instead of stoppers, Aktiv’s containers utilize permanent, physicochemically bonded film-film closure, which unlike physically mated closures maintains aseptic barrier integrity even at cryogenic temperatures.

One of the key features of Aktiv’s technology is that the flexible containers can be configured with multiple compartments to be merged at the time of use by peeling frangible seals separating them, which enables incorporating aseptic reconstitution/mixing capability into the container itself. This reduces the room for potential user errors and contamination associated with the practice of packaging lyophilized drugs and their diluents into separate vials. It also allows for significantly easier implementation of automated reconstitution/mixing in drug delivery devices.

The ARAI autoinjector has been developed by Aktiv as a next generation autoinjector platform to address the shortfalls of previous autoinjectors by improving usability, reliability, robustness, and drug stability. Maryland Resident Wins 2022 Caregiver of the Year Award

The Home Care Association of America (HCAOA) announced last week that Katrice Turner, employed as a caregiver for Absolute Companion Care in Monkton, Maryland, has been named the 2022 Caregiver of the Year. Turner was chosen from more than 300 nominated caregivers from nearly all 50 states. The award came with a $1,000 cash prize, and Turner was recognized at a special ceremony on Sunday, September 18, 2022, during the HCAOA Annual Leadership Conference in Orlando.

Turner’s nomination by Absolute Companion Care Executive Director Kathryn C. Rogers, M.Ed., painted a moving picture of Turner’s journey with the organization. Within a year of joining the agency in 2009, Turner’s resourcefulness, attentiveness, empathy, and leadership propelled her career growth within the company as she rose to Team Lead for an entire 24/7 caregiving team.

“Katrice is resourceful, attentive, empathetic, and adaptive. Her dependability knows no bounds, she never misses a shift, never lets her standards down, and never accepts less than those standards from others on her team. She has built a level of trust with clients, their family members, and her team members that is truly admirable,” said Rogers.

Turner’s anticipation of needs and problem-solving have also greatly benefited her clients, Rogers noted. “She took a post-stroke client with severe depression from not wanting to leave her home to getting beautifully dressed, fully made-up, and [going] out into the community to enjoy social activities every week,” said Rogers. “Then, when that client’s husband began showing signs of dementia, Katrice was the first to notice immediately and alerted the agency and the family, helping this couple to stay together and age gracefully,” Rogers added.

“What makes Katrice exemplary is her dedication to her employer and the career path she has created at her agency,” said Vicki Hoak, CEO of the HCAOA, “When home care agencies are facing a critical workforce shortage and being forced to turn clients away because they don’t have enough caregivers, it is remarkably inspiring to recognize someone who is not only committed to providing care to those who need it in their homes but also has grown and evolved with the same agency for more than ten years.”

NarcX meets the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) strict definition of non-retrievable. Where it All Began

She is a certified Personal Care Home Administrator and holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kutztown University.

Pregnancy & Newborn’s Survey of More than 3,000 Parents Calls Attention to the Unsustainable Childcare System in the US

Half of those who responded said they either left a job, changed jobs, or decided to become a stay-at-home parent because of the cost or availability of childcare.

Pregnancy & Newborn, a wholly owned subsidiary of FueledLoop LLC, a division of Aeroflow Healthcare recently conducted a survey of over 3,000 parents on how the accessibility and cost of childcare in the United States have affected their lives and careers—and the results are astounding.

Millions of mothers left the workforce during the height of the pandemic, many never to return. The lack of childcare was the number one reason moms left or changed jobs in 2021. With the average cost of monthly daycare tuition for just one child totaling 22% of a family’s gross annual income, it’s no wonder why many families across the country have decided that returning to the office is not worth the cost.

A number of survey respondents from dual-income homes told Pregnancy & Newborn that even though both parents were working, they were still unable to afford the cost of daycare. And because these families made what is considered to be a large enough income, they were ineligible for government-subsidized programs.

Some of those families surveyed told Pregnancy & Newborn that even when both parents, or in many cases, just one parent in a single-parent household worked and sent their children to daycare, the cost of daycare was more than the cost of housing.

Half of those who responded said they either left a job, changed jobs, or decided to become a stay-at-home parent because of the cost or availability of childcare. A total of 77% of respondents who are not currently working said they would return to the workforce if childcare were more affordable or accessible.

What’s more, Pregnancy & Newborn has found that 80% of survey respondents were on a waitlist of six months or longer, further emphasizing the issue of available childcare; some waitlists exceeded two years, indicating that many parents who wished to return to the workforce were unable to due to the availability of childcare.

For some of those who were able to burden the cost and to get a spot in daycare, childcare centers’ limited hours, or drop-off and pick-up times not aligning with parents’ working hours means that in addition to the substantial cost of childcare, parents are left to supplement the time with extra help (and an additional cost). In fact, 40% of survey respondents said they have to supplement childcare.

With this being a nationwide issue, still, only 9% of employers provide childcare subsidies to their employees. America is facing a recession and a labor shortage, and Pregnancy & Newborn suggests that it’s time we look at the lack of parental support and the looming childcare crisis throughout the country as the real culprits. Beginning its second decade as a physician-owned and operated company, Indianapolis-based OPYS has today risen to acquire a national reputation for effectively addressing critical physician shortages and medical professional challenges.

“Many hospitals and clinics today face major and costly challenges in identifying and attracting highly qualified physicians, especially in small-to-medium-sized cities and rural areas,” said Dr. Creese. “OPYS strategically helps hospitals and trauma centers address these critical issues and sustain a high quality of care.”

In achieving national 21% growth over 2021 in its specific national markets, OPYS provides hospital-based physician management group outsourcing to emergency, inpatient, urgent care, and telemedicine centers, delivering a customized array of physician services.

Senior executives and specialists recently brought on by OPYS include Don Kelso, MBA, Chief Operating Officer (COO), a former hospital CEO and rural health association top executive; Deena Dodd, vice president of business development and government affairs; Becky Saunders, MBA, executive director of telehealth services; and Karl Rademacher, BS, financial analyst and director of IT.
